St. Louis teens beat man to death with hammers

This is a disturbing story, and one can’t help but wonder if these actions were motivated by the chaos in nearby Ferguson.

from KTVI:

Police are investigating an overnight homicide in south St. Louis. It happened around 1:15am Sunday on Gravois and Itaska, near Bevo Mill. A man, identified as Zemir Begic, 32, was struck on the head, face, mouth, and abdomen. He was taken to a hospital where he died of his injuries.

An investigation determined that Begic was in his car when several juveniles came up on foot and began to strike the car. Begic got out and the four suspects began yelling at him and hitting him with hammers. After the assault, the four ran away.

Two were caught and taken into juvenile custody. Police are still searching for two others, a 16-year-old black male and a 15-year-old Hispanic.

Zemir Begic was part of a group of Bosnian immigrants who fled to the US to escape genocide. Some of his Bosnian neighbors protested after the hammer attack, but they made it clear they had no intentions of starting riots:

Police have arrested a 15 and 16-year-old in the murder of 32-year-old Zemir Begic. A third male suspect turned himself in late Sunday night.

Begic was in his car on Itaska Avenue early Sunday when several young people approached him and attacked his vehicle.

He was hit with hammers when he got out. He died a short time later at the St. Louis University Hospital.

There is no word on a motive.

However, “there is no indication that the gentleman last night was targeted because he was Bosnian,” St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said. “There’s no indication that they knew each other.”

Denisa Begic, 23, of Sioux Falls, S.D.  said, “We came from Bosnia because we were getting killed and our homes and families were getting destroyed. Never in my life did I think he would get murdered.”

He and his wife were in the car, and it was stopped near the intersection. Several teens surrounded and attacked the vehicle, and Zemir stepped out to see what the problem was. As they began to attack him and his wife, he pushed his wife back into the car to protect her. And they killed him.

This should never have happened to a man like my brother. He was too good of a man for this. He would have given anyone the shirt off his back. Anyone. One time he actually drove from where he lived in Phoenix, Arizona, to help our sister in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, because her car broke down.

We are all devastated. The phone call we got was like a heart attack. Something will always be missing from our hearts because of this. All we want is to see justice done for my brother.

We appreciate all the support from family, from the Bosnian community, from social media.

Snijeg - Snow

Aida Begic

blanketforttime asked:

calling someone a cracker isn't fucking racist :')

One of your main arguments is that people aren’t killed for being white.

Now let’s cover “cracker”

>One theory holds that slave foremen in the antebellum South used bullwhips to punish African slaves, with such use of the whip being described as “cracking the whip.” The white foremen who cracked these whips thus became known as “crackers.”[4][5][6] Contemporary sources suggest, however, that it was not slaves but pack animals over which the whips were “cracked.”

>An alternative theory holds that the term comes from the common diet of poor whites. The 1911 edition of Encyclopedia Britannica supposes that the term derives from the cracked kernels of corn which formed the staple food of this class of people,[12] but the Oxford English Dictionary (“cracker”, definition 4) says a derivation from “corn-cracker” is doubtful.

So yeah. Those evil white people and their whips. Considering slavery is abolished in America calling a white person a cracker as a pejorative term is pretty fucking racist.

And before you hop on your high horse about slavery and how the white man deserves to be called a cracker for it, know first these facts.

The first slave owner in America may not have been a black man, but there were many black people who owned slaves back then.

And let us not forget that the slaves came here from Africa. Who do you think sold them to the people that lived here? The white people that magically appeared?

Let us not forget that slavery is still going and there are many white slaves. So yeah, it doesn’t matter what race you are chucklefuck. If you have two arms and two legs they’ll kidnap your ass and put you to work.

Point being you’re an asshole and a racist.

The Housekeeper

Residents of Sorin College love Senija.

As a custodian, Senija Begic may only be inside the dorm on weekday mornings, but her enthusiasm for her job spreads throughout the morning, as she greets students heading out to their classes. And throughout her eleven years working in the building, Begic has established herself as the most popular character in the Sorin community.

“I always say, ‘there is my second home,’” Begic said.

Her path to Sorin, however, had been an arduous one.
