In a case of extreme good fortune, a Midnight News reporter was rescued this evening by a pizza-delivering Canadian woman. While @she-who-treads-on-water is a self declared water witch and possible mer-person, Canadians are famed for their super human strength and bizarre natural decency.

Despite all warnings contrary, she even completed this one-woman rescue venture in a pair of flip flops!

A celebratory thank you box of tiny poisonous spiders has been shipped to her home accordingly, in addition to the box already sent as part of her subscription package.

‘Hawaii Five-0’ star Daniel Dae Kim posts in-depth Facebook message addressing exit from CBS series

  • Actor Daniel Dae Kim is speaking out after news broke of his surprise exit from CBS crime drama Hawaii Five-0.

Scientists discover a new nodosaur dinosaur species, and the specimen has perfectly preserved skin

  • An equipment operator at an oil mine in Alberta, Canada, found some unusual buried treasure in 2011 — a roughly 110 million-year-old, dragon-like dinosaur with its armored, spiky skin still intact.
  • Now, scientists understand the true weight of that discovery — the specimen, called a nodosaur, makes way in the encyclopedia for an all-new genus and species.
  • It’s a type of ankylosaur that lived during the Cretaceous period, and this specimen is about 18 feet long and about 3,000 pounds, according to National Geographic. Plus, it’s extremely rare for scientists to have more than the bones of a specimen to work with.
  • “We don’t just have a skeleton,” Caleb Brown, a postdoctoral researcher at Royal Tyrrell Museum, told National Geographic. “We have a dinosaur as it would have been.” Read more (5/16/17)

Jordan Peele to Produce HBO Series ‘Lovecraft Country’ With J.J. Abrams, Misha Green

By Joe Otterson

Jordan Peele will executive produce the new series “Lovecraft Country,” which has been ordered straight-to-series at HBO, Variety has confirmed.

Based on the book of the same name by Matt Ruff, the anthology horror series follows 25-year-old Atticus Black, who joins up with his friend Letitia and his Uncle George to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America to find his missing father.  They must survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the malevolent spirits that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.

“Underground” co-creator  and showrunner Misha Green will write and executive produce the series, with Peele executive producing through his Monkeypaw Productions banner.  J.J. Abrams and Ben Stephenson will also executive produce through Bad Robot, with Warner Bros. Television producing.

Peele, who broke out on the Comedy Central series “Key & Peele,” has been in high demand ever since the success of his low-budget horror film “Get Out.”  The film, about a black man who discovers a dark secret at his Caucasian girlfriend’s family estate, has grossed almost $215 million worldwide on a $4.5 million budget.

He recently signed a first-look deal with Universal Pictures based on the success of “Get Out.”  Under the deal, Universal will develop Peele’s next film, an untitled social thriller, which he will write, direct, and produce based on his original idea.  In addition, Peele will also produce a wide range of movies for the studio through Monkeypaw Productions, including several micro-budget projects with Jason Blum, as he did with “Get Out.”

For Green, the new series comes along as the fate of “Underground” remains uncertain.  Despite critical praise, the WGN America show saw a drop in the live-plus-same day ratings during its sophomore season.  In addition, Sinclair Broadcasting recently announced they will acquire WGN parent company Tribune Media, with plans to shift focus away from producing original series.  To that end, WGN recently canceled their other original, “Outsiders,” which enjoyed higher ratings than “Underground.”

10 Questions About the 2017 Astronaut Class

We will select between eight and 14 new astronaut candidates from among a record-breaking applicant class of more than 18,300, almost three times the number of applications the agency received in 2012 for the recent astronaut class, and far surpassing the previous record of 8,000 in 1978.

The candidates will be announced at an event at our Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas at 2 p.m. EDT on June 7. You can find more information on how to watch the announcement HERE.

1. What are the qualifications for becoming an astronaut?

Applicants must meet the following minimum requirements before submitting an application.

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in engineering, biological science, physical science, computer science or mathematics.
  • Degree must be followed by at least 3 years of related, progressively responsible, professional experience or at least 1,000 hours of pilot-in-command time in jet aircraft
  • Ability to pass the NASA Astronaut physical.

For more information, visit:

2. What have selections looked like in the past?

There have been 22 classes of astronauts selected from the original “Mercury Seven” in 1959 to the most recent 2017 class. Other notable classes include:

  • The fourth class in 1965 known as “The Scientists: because academic experience was favored over pilot skills.
  • The eighth class in 1978 was a huge step forward for diversity, featuring the first female, African American and Asian American selections.
  • The 16th class in 1996 was the largest class yet with 44 members – 35 U.S. astronauts and 9 international astronauts. They were selected for the frequent Space Shuttle flights and the anticipated need for International Space Station crewmembers.
  • The 21st class in 2013 was the first class to have 50/50 gender split with 4 female members and 4 male members.

3. What vehicles will they fly in?

They could be assigned on any of four different spacecraft: the International Space Station, our Orion spacecraft for deep space exploration or one of two American-made commercial crew spacecraft currently in development – Boeing’s CST-199 Starliner or the SpaceX Crew Dragon.

4. Where will they go?

These astronauts will be part of expanded crews aboard the space station that will significantly increase the crew time available to conduct the important research and technology demonstrations that are advancing our knowledge for missions farther into space than humans have gone before, while also returning benefits to Earth. They will also be candidates for missions beyond the moon and into deep space aboard our Orion spacecraft on flights that help pave the way for missions to Mars.

5. What will their roles be?

After completing two years of general training, these astronaut candidates will be considered full astronauts, eligible to be assigned spaceflight missions. While they wait for their turn, they will be given duties within the Astronaut Office at Johnson Space Center. Technical duties can range from supporting current missions in roles such as CAPCOM in Mission Control, to advising on the development of future spacecraft.

6. What will their training look like?

The first two years of astronaut candidate training will focus on the basic skills astronauts need. They’ll practice for spacewalks in Johnson’s 60-foot deep swimming pool, the Neutral Buoyancy Lab, which requires SCUBA certification. They’ll also simulate bringing visiting spacecraft in for a berthing to the space station using its robotic arm, Canadarm2, master the ins and outs of space station system and learn Russian.

And, whether they have previous experience piloting an aircraft of not, they’ll learn to fly our fleet of T-38s. In addition, they’ll perfect their expeditionary skills, such as leadership and fellowship, through activities like survival training and geology treks.

7.  What kinds of partners will they work with?

They will join a team that supports missions going on at many different NASA centers across the country, but they’ll also interact with commercial partners developing spaceflight hardware. In addition, they will work with our international partners around the globe: ESA (the European Space Agency, the Canadian Space Agency, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and the Russian space agency, Roscosmos.

8. How does the selection process work?

All 18,353 of the applications submitted were reviewed by human resources experts to determine if they met the basic qualifications. Those that did were then each reviewed by a panel of about 50 people, made up primarily of current astronauts. Called the Astronaut Rating Panel, that group narrowed to applicants down to a few hundred of what they considered the most highly qualified individuals, whose references were then checked.

From that point, a smaller group called the Astronaut Selection Board brought in the top 120 applicants for an intense round of interviews and some initial medical screening tests. That group is further culled to the top 50 applicants afterward, who are brought back for a second round of interviews and additional screening. The final candidates are selected from that group.

9. How do they get notified?

Each applicant selected to become an astronaut receives a phone call from the head of the Flight Operations Directorate at our Johnson Space Center and the chief of the astronaut office. They’re asked to share the good news with only their immediate family until their selection has been officially announced.

10. How does the on boarding process work?

Astronaut candidates will report for duty at Johnson Space Center in August 2017, newly fitted flight suits in tow, and be sworn into civil service. Between their selection and their report for duty, they will make arrangements to leave their current positions and relocate with their family to Houston, Texas.

NASA plans to fill the sky with colorful, artificial clouds

  • Later in June, people in the U.S. mid-Atlantic region will likely be treated to a unique early-morning sight: colorful artificial clouds, thanks to NASA.
  • The blue-green and red clouds will be produced by the launch of a Terrier Improved Malemute sounding rocket carrying 10 canisters, which will be deployed approximately five minutes after the launch.
  • These canisters will release the colorful vapor trail, which allow NASA’s scientists to track how particles move in space and learn more about upper atmospheric winds.
  • Though vapor tracers have been used by scientists in the past, the multi-canister ampoule ejection system onboard this mission will allow scientists to cover a much larger area than previous tests, the NASA website notes. Read more (6/5/17)

Marawi City Update: As of 10:02 am local time

I am getting most of my updates via Twitter from citizens and their families within Marawi. The news networks are either downplaying what is going on or barely covering it at all. Citizens have also been told to stop talking about whats going on and what is currently happening via social media. Some info on Twitter may or may not be true but I am following those who are currently living there, searching through their tweets on what’s going on and their updated photos and videos. The information below however has been confirmed by CNN Philippines and through interviews with residents.

At the moment the fire at Dansalan College has been put out but burn marks and fallen debris surround the college. Three buildings of the college have been burned down.

Citizens of Marawi are now currently trying to escape the city to safety during the morning hours. Some are walking with injured, others are driving. Some have been stopped by the terrorists in certain points of the city but have been released and let through.

One teacher that has been held hostage has been rescued.

Gunfire is still being heard by residents. Many are stating that they still see no government military presence in many parts of the city.

Scientists just spotted 2 black holes flirting and dancing like awkward middle schoolers

  • Astronomers have detected a pair of supermassive black holes 750 million light-years away from Earth in a separate giant galaxy.
  • Courtesy of the National Science Foundation’s Very Long Baseline Array’s (VLBA) radio vision data on the orbital motion of the black holes has been captured.
  • Together, the two black holes have a combined mass that is 15 billion times the mass of the Sun, which is 1.989 x 10^30 kilograms or 330,000 times the mass of Earth.
  • But most galaxies have supermassive black holes that are millions or billions times larger than the Sun at their core.
  • What makes these two black holes unique is their distance from one another: They’re relatively close to each other with only 24 light-years of distance between them. Read more (6/28/17)

The Comey hearing was Kamala Harris’ biggest test yet. And she slayed.

  • Senator Kamala Harris will not be silenced.
  • A day after Senate Intelligence Committee Chairman Richard Burr attempted to cut off her line of questioning at Wednesday’s hearing, Harris again made headlines for her no-nonsense approach to getting answers.
  • First, she started off with one of the hearing’s rare moments of levity, offering a joke about her and Comey’s time as prosecutors.
  • “When a robber holds a gun to your head and says, ‘I hope you’ll give me your wallet,’ 'hope’ is not the operative word.”
  • But after that moment of levity, Harris asked what many are describing as the most pointed questions of the hearing.
  • “Are there other meetings or key communications between Trump administration officials and Russians that have been to date undisclosed?"
  • Harris asked in a series of rapid-fire questions that Comey mostly declined to answer. Read more (6/8/17)

I had to split this photo into two because my feels overwhelmed me when I realized that Catherine is holding onto her two babies while throwing an absolute over-the-moon smile at her sister, Pippa. These two girls have been under constant scrutiny since news leaked of Catherine’s involvement with William. Countless rumors, and useless gossip, that followed Catherine’s wedding to William, featuring sister Pip, could have broken these girls. But today, they stood as sisters and Catherine got to see her little sis become a beautiful bride. I can’t even explain how happy this makes me & how beautiful this one photo is when you’ve seen nearly their whole adult life unravel before the cameras. MIDDLETON SISTERS FTW ♡♡

FBI investigating University of Maryland stabbing as a hate crime

  • The FBI is evaluating whether a white student suspected of fatally stabbing a black student visiting the University of Maryland campus should be tried for a hate crime, police said according to CNN.
  • On Sunday, University of Maryland Police Chief David Mitchell told reporters that 23-year-old Richard Wilbur Collins III had been walking on campus with two friends early Saturday morning when the suspect approached “yelling — in fact perhaps screaming is one description.”
  • “[Collins] then said step left, step left if you know what’s good for you,” according to Mitchell. The suspect — 22-year-old Sean Christopher Urbanski — refused, and then stabbed Collins in the chest with a knife.
  • Collins was transported to Prince George’s County Shock Trauma, where he was declared dead.
  • Urbanski, a University of Maryland student, had belonged to a Facebook group called “Alt Reich.” Read more (5/22/17)
