because we all know he's a lion

Its headcanon time: Lance might be Altean!

So correct me if im wrong, and im quickly writing this bc its late and shit, but we know one thing right?

Allura is the only person that can open a wormhole.

Except… not.

If Allura would be the only one to be able to open a wormhole, how did Lance reach planet Arus?

He wouldn’t be able to.

Now, i know this might seem unlikely. The lion could’ve opened the portal too, right?

No, because that would mean that allura simply didn’t need to create wormholes, because the lion would be able to open it himself. Allura explicitly states that, even if theres enough quintessence, someone needs to manually open the portal.

We gotta keep in mind that Lance doesn’t have his “special thing”. Hes the most balanced character of all, who has the least unique qualities. Shiro has his past, Pidge their family, Keith his Galra-ness, Allura had her problems ith the Galra’s and Hunk is the cook/sweetheart (who in imo can have some more qualities too). He knows it himself, too.

Lance is, though, an extremely perceptive person, and it isnt the first time that things that he has said lead to foreshadowing (“why are the galras finding us?” “I dont know, but i bet its keiths fault” implying that keith has a relation to the galra). In episode 1, Lance literally says to keith “I’ll stick u in a wormhole!”

Foreshadowing?

Lance, too, was the one who caught Allura, who’s an Altean, and is the closest paladin to Coran. He also was the first one to activate his lion. And hes the only one sleeping in Altean robes.

Now, I’m not necessarily saying that Lance is Altean, but at least his quintessence is close to theirs. But it wouldn’t surprise me if Lance somehow has something to do with the Alteans.

Feel free to add on to this post if u found things too!

ok so you know how every time shiro mentions not making it, and keith just panics? closes up and immediately cuts him off? the thought of losing shiro is clearly upsetting, but i dont think shiro realizes just how much this affects keith until bom

becuase the last time shiro talks about it is here

right before they reach the base of marmora.

which means, after seeing keith’s hallucination of all this

he never mentions leaving him again.

and while you can say that shiro and keith both see each other at their lowest points, there’s definitely something that feels more vulnerale about shiro peering into keith’s mind. and not only that, but the fact that he directly sees how keith views him. its this intrusion on a deeply personal, intimate moment. and honestly, i think keith seeing something similar from shiro’s perspective would be the only thing to put them on equal footing

we already know the black lion can use the astral plane to project zarkon’s memories. so i think, once keith takes over, it will probably share some of shiro’s. of course, part of why bom is so painful is because shiro is privy to these moments against keith’s will. this isnt something hes sharing voluntarily. so as a counter to that, i would hope their link with black lion would allow shiro to reach out to him and share memories in a mutually agreed upon way

Shiro and the Black Lion meta: “You Saved Me.”

I’ve been wanting to write this meta for a while, because after season 2 came out I’ve seen a lot of people characterise the Black Lion as disloyal or fickle, and I don’t think this is the case. I think the Black Lion is extremely loyal to Shiro, and very closely bonded to him; and I think she probably hates Zarkon as much as Shiro does. That might be a strange conclusion to come to after she literally spat Shiro out in the season 1 finale, so let’s break this down a little bit:

If you leave aside the incident in 1x11, the rest of the show portrays the Black Lion and Shiro as very closely bonded. In 1x02 Shiro is the only Paladin who’s able to do the nosedive exercise. At this point he’s been piloting the Lion for like… a couple of days MAX, but he’s able to bond with her to the point that he can see through her eyes. So far, we haven’t seen any of the other Paladins pull this off. The Lion/Paladin bond is a two-way thing - we see that clearly with Red and Keith - so we have to assume that this bonding moment is not just down to Shiro’s calm focus. It’s also coming from Black.

You can also see Black’s willingness to bond with Shiro in 2x07. Shiro goes down to the hangar, sits in the Lion, and goes: “Work with me. What do I have to do to strengthen our bond?” And the Lion is like: “YES BONDING! ALRIGHT! LET’S GO!!” She immediately powers up and whisks Shiro off on a spiritual journey. She invites Shiro to see through her eyes, and shows him her history and how she was made. Shiro asks ‘what do I have to do to strengthen our bond?’ and the Lion’s answer is 'you need to understand my history and where I come from’. And again - we’ve not seen any of the other Lions do this. Shiro is the only Paladin whose Lion has opened up about their past or told their Paladin this kind of visual story.

None of this is consistent with the characterisation of the Black Lion as disloyal. It certainly doesn’t seem like she mistrusts or dislikes Shiro, right? If anything, she seems positively eager to open up to him.

Which brings me to my theory about the Black Lion: I don’t think she’s fickle, or contrary, or lowkey still into her ex. I don’t think she likes Zarkon at all, or misses him, or wants him back as her Paladin.

I think she’s traumatised.

More under the cut, because sweet quiznak did this get long:

This part is so heartbreaking for me because for the first time we see how lonely Keith really is. He was orphaned early in his life and has lived alone for so long, so he doesn’t have any of the attachments the others do. He had no parents to love him and he was kicked out of the Garrison so suddenly. Even then he was a loner, and he still is the lone wolf of Voltron. His lion chose him because he is distant and hot tempered. I have a feeling that he is full of so much anger because he had no one to make him feel happy in his life. Even when he was at the Garrison he kept to himself, alone at the top, not even having Lance as a friend because of their supposed “rivalry”.

Aside from Shiro, Hunk, Lance, Pidge, Red, Allura, and Coran, he has no one that he cares for. Team Voltron is his whole world. Even when they were doing that mind exercise, the only thing occupying his thoughts were memories of being alone in his sad little shack. Isolation is the only thing he knows. He says that everyone in the universe has a family. And everyone does. Everyone except for him. He has nobody that loves him.

So when Hunk and Pidge were so eager to leave in favor of going back to their families he couldn’t understand it. He thought it was selfish to abandon their mission just to go back to someone you loved, but he had no idea how it felt to have people to return to. So I just find this scene so sad because Keith is all alone and now the only people he’s ever truly cared for are thinking about leaving him all over again.

And the worst part of it is that we all know he’s going to be revealed to be half Galra in season two. So that pretty much means that the tiny piece of family that he does have will be the enemy, the very aliens they have been trying to defeat this entire time. It will break him, because he can’t even enjoy finally having some family since they are trying to kill the only people he has ever cared about. I just have so many feelings about Keith Kogane.

“Listen up, scarface, I’ve cut throats from creatures your size before, I can do it again.”

Ok but hear me out: An AU where Keith grew up in the Blade of Marmora. The red lion has chosen Keith to be her new paladin, and leads team Voltron to their base to pick him up. However, this Keith isn’t the one we know in canon universe. Keith is very defensive and hostile towards Allura, Coran and the paladins because he has grown up believing all outsiders have ill intentions and should never be trusted. Shiro quickly has to learn how to gain Keith’s trust, because after all, he’s his right hand man, and without him they can’t form voltron.

  • “Pidge it started” “do you want a heating pad or some midol” “i want to die” “bitch why are you always ordering off the menu”

well it’s not a very important theory and it actually wasn’t hard to google that stuff but i think i’m the first to compilate all that in one post and publish it..?

ok so as we can see there are two trees in the pocket dimension now: lars’ and lion’s. i’ll start from the lars’ tree because we still don’t know many things about lion’s personality and origins etc. lars’ tree is probably a narra tree and for some reason it’s difficult to find good photos of it

so narra is the national symbol of the Philippines (and we know that lars is at least half Filipino). it symbolizes hardihood and capacity for endurance, indomitable spirit and strength of character, and i can say that it’s actually kinda accurate descripition after what he did

lion’s tree is definitely an acacia tree

acacia is a symbol for platonic or consealed, secret love. also it represents pureness, courage and renewal

so of course it’s highly possible that tree is connected to rose’s personality because lion is an animal and he maybe doesn’t have any deep story buuut i don’t know.,, we all still don’t know anything about his past soooo…

MY HELLA WEIRD VOLTRON THEORY THAT MAY ACTUALLY BE TRUE???

okay so hear me out. at the end of season 2, shiro mysteriously vanishes from inside the cockpit of his lion. i have no doubt he will be back to piloting black within a season, but here’s what i see most people asking: WHERE TF IS HE??

BUT HERE’S THE CATCH Y’ALL. IT’S NOT JUST WHERE. IT’S WHEN.

shiro has been transported not just through space but through TIME. and i know EXACTLY where and when he will eventually end up.

on earth. with the blue lion. in the caves with the carvings. but NOT in his original time. much much before that.

has everyone forgotten that the only reason keith knew to prepare for something arriving on the day that shiro crashed back on earth in his pod was because cave carvings told him that something would be arriving on that exact day?

we all either forgot about it, or assumed it had to do with some weird prophecy. but my theory is that shiro made those carvings himself to ensure that the future he was in would still happen. to ensure that keith would eventually find them. to ensure all the events leading up to them reforming voltron and fighting zarkon would still happen. so that the timeline he was originally from would still exist for him to return to.

i have zero other details for this, i dunno how he actually gets back exactly (my theory is it’s got something to do with the black lion), and it fucks with a whole lotta space-time bullshit, and flirts with the scary idea of things like pre-ordained destinies existing, but holy shit guys this may just be it.

S3 predictions !

* we have no idea how the team reacts to losing shiro, this scene is never shown

* despite all keith and red went thru last season he still becomes the black paladin, red lion who???? Don’t know her

* allura has to Learn to Respect Keith’s Leadership Skills because Not All Galra ™. She probably has to apologize to him too and even though she’s obviously a more experienced and capable leader than he is she takes a backseat while Keith leads the team

* hunk saves the day by eating in one episode

* lance flirts with every Girl in the show (none of these girls have names or speaking lines except the one who kisses him)

* they each get like 2 minutes of development in the whole season

* staff makes it seem as if they’re a way bigger deal than they actually are, getting us all hyped up for the new season and then… it’s season 2 again

* Keith’s mom shows up in a flashback, turns out she’s dead. Her whole personality is being beautiful and dead that’s it that’s all we’re given

* but Keith’s dad is still alive !!!1 and he’s a fully fledged character with a detailed backstory and interesting motivations

(* Fandom ships him with everyone)

* speaking of

* lotor

* he’s there

* he’s fuckin horrible. Murders someone every episode. Fandom uses the “you’re doing amazing sweetie” reaction pic endlessly for each of these. Everyone thinks he’s gay because he has long hair, is evil, and is (god help me) Hot

* he’s also shipped with Everyone

* naturally he gets more development and screen time than hunk and lance put together I mean like that’s even a question

* turns out he was betrothed to allura before Altea fell and he Never Got Over It

* it’s creepy as shit but we have no idea how allura takes it because this is used to further Keith’s character development not hers

* pidge finds Matt, this either takes a single episode or half the season, and now the two of them have to find their father. He’s probably wherever lance and hunks characterization went.

* there’s a couple in the background of one scene and it’s implied they’re a Gay. This is the LGBT rep they were talking about. They pat themselves on the back for this and never bring up LGBT rep again.

* allura has to keep dealing with the not all galra storyline, she has to learn to accept them and love them ™ because all hate is Bad… live and let live… imagine all the people living life in peace…

* the last episode is a cliffhanger but this time it’s shiro who has returned, only when he opens his eyes they’re yellow like in that vision he had with Hagar back in s1

What are Keith’s Powers?

OK so in the first episode of both seasons (which I don’t think is a coincidence) we saw that Keith had a pull towards the Blue Lion

And that he was able to pilot the Black Lion momentarily

But he’s also the main pilot of the Red Lion

And as we all know, overall Keith has the strongest connection/bond with Red by far.

So if Keith has been able to communicate with three lions, it’s most likely that he’ll also have a pull towards the other two lions in the future as well. But if you put the facts together, he has the strongest bond with Red because the lion is meant for him, but he also has some sort of connection with the Blue and Black Lion. And what do all of those lions have in common? Quintessence.

If you remember in season one, Allura claimed that each paladin pilots a lion whose Quintessence mirrors their own and that creates a mystical bond that cannot be explained between the paladin and the lion.

What if Keith has a rare form of Quintessence that is able to allow him to have a connection or feel with more than one lion instead of just one?

It’s almost like both of the lions are able to speak to him and he is able to speak to them as well just like to their original paladins (except for Red in the beginning of course)

That means he could possibly have a strong, rare quintessence that he has not yet discovered, unlocked, or even realized yet, but is developing further as the show goes a long. Once it is revealed though, I feel like it will be very important to the team.

How it went down

In the past, I feel I’ve made it abundantly clear that I do not like it when people speculate that Rose Quartz was pink diamond.

It’s not that it’s impossible: because really it isn’t. We know for a fact that as an extension of Steven’s empath abilities, he can swap bodies with other gems, as well as humans and even watermelons. The mechanic exists for Rose and PD to swap bodies, and seems to have been introduced for the sole purpose of giving us a hint

It isn’t a lack of foreshadowing that spoils it for me either. All the foreshadowing that existed before it became obvious that Rose had the body of a quartz still stands, both for Rose and for Lion. For fuck’s sake. I can see why Pearl would might still have a pink diamond on her uniforms, but Garnet, Sardonyx and Baby Steven have no excuse!

No, what pisses me off about these theorists is that I have yet to see a variation that does NOT make Rose/PD look like a sociopathic idiot. See, the core flaw with these theories is and always has been that Pink Diamond stole a Rose Quartz’s body then killed her for reasons that make no sense.

If she had wanted to protect earth, she could have easily done more easily as herself, and wouldn’t have to murder a bunch of other gems in cold blood to do so. She would have had the political power, the control over the planet, and she wouldn’t be hunted for regicide!

Of course, all these wrinkles iron out if we change one tiny thing; Body swapping wasn’t Pink Diamond’s Ability, It was Rose’s!

See, if we assume it was Rose Quartz –the original Rose Quartz – who stole PD’s body, suddenly everything falls into place.

First, we have the motivation: There is no reason why Pink Diamond would have wanted to be a quartz, but there is every reason why a Rose Quartz would want to be a Pink Diamond. All this Rose had to do is mind swap with PD, and once that’s done it’s her power. Pinkie would be unable to switch back!

Second, we have a reason to believe mind-swapping was always Rose’s power. It’s never been more clear than in the past few episodes that Steven is not simply empathetic in the mundane sense, he’s actually an Empath, a type of telepath who can feel other’s emotions through a psychic connection rather than mere sympathy. This power is vital to a Rose Quartz, who needs to be able to physically feel a patient’s pain to cry healing tears. Since Empaths are a form of Telepath, mind-connection powers like dreamwalking and body snatching are actually part of the package deal!

Third, it’s a situation that morally and strategically justifies Pink Diamond’s actions. If Pink Diamond wanted to protect earth she could do more easily as the planet’s ruler than as a soldier who just committed regicide, and she wouldn’t need to switch bodies with an innocent rose quartz and then murder her in cold blood to do so. Even if the Rose consented, it would still be completely unjustified, but if it was her body that was stolen Pink would be absolved of all responsibility.

Now usurped, trapped in a new form and possibly hunted by the soldier who stole her body, Pink Diamond had no choice left but to rebel, and this would give Rose every justification she would need to implement part two

Never forget, Quartzes are soldiers, military tacticians. If this Rose stole the body of a diamond, then any other one could as well. Rose Quartz couldn’t have that happening, so she had her sisters poofed and imprisoned in bubbles, leaving them trapped in stasis and unable to do the same to her.

Now Rose was in a tough situation. Pink Diamond, – who we knew up until this point as Rose – Was fascinated by earth. If their sister suddenly lost her love for humans, the other diamonds would become suspicious. Rose Quartz would have to play the part. Thus, the human zoo was born.

As for Pink Diamond, she would was now leading a rebellion, but nobody would believe her if she claimed to be the real Diamond authority. Hell, many of her followers may have been like Bismuth: resentful of their former leaders and hungry for shards. No, the only people Pink Diamond could trust were her closest followers. Pearl and Garnet and possibly a few more. Only they knew they were really doing the duty of a queen, and that’s why even millennia after the war ended they and their fusions still bore pink diamonds on their shirts shoes and pants.

In the end, Pink Diamond was never able to take back her body, but she couldn’t let Rose use her body for tyranny anymore. The die was cast, a diamond fell, and a quartz and her pearl watched the miracle of a new beginning.

Pink took her body, her usurper and shards, a remnant of the life she hand long left behind. These would later be fed to the lions who followed her, creating a pet left for Steven when he needed it most.

All theories are true on this one, they all fit into place. I’m just glad I was finally able to make order out of these disparate parts

Voltron Meta: Lion Switching as a Plot Device

Since it seems increasingly likely that we will get Lion Switching in season 3 (i.e. Keith piloting Black, Lance piloting Red, and Allura piloting Blue, as they did in Old Voltron) I thought I’d take a moment to address how this might work.

I’ve previously stated that I’m against any permanent Lion Switching, and I stand by that. I don’t think it would work narratively, for a number of reasons - not least of which is the fact that it would require Shiro to be permanently removed from the role of Black Paladin and either written into a diminished role or written out of the show entirely. I don’t think either of these choices fit with what the show has done with his character, and they would be disappointing steps to take in light of how important Shiro is as good representation of a traumatised, mentally ill character. @radioactivesupersonic has a great meta {here} about why it doesn’t make sense to kill off Shiro, and many of the same points apply to the question of removing Shiro as Black Paladin and replacing him with someone else (even if he doesn’t actually die, and instead takes on a lesser role).

To my mind it doesn’t make sense to spend two seasons building up Shiro’s bond with the Black Lion, even going so far as to have Shiro battle Zarkon in Voltron’s infinite void for control of the Lion… and then just get rid of Shiro and put another Paladin in his place. It negates much of the bonding he has done with Black, and renders his storyline a dead end. It’s narratively more satisfying to see Shiro’s connection with the Black Lion play out across the course of the show than it is to see another Paladin in the Black Lion on a permanent basis.

[this seems like a lot of trouble to go to just to get replaced is all i’m saying]

That said, I’m not averse to the idea of a temporary Lion Switch because I think it opens up some opportunities for interesting storytelling, and that’s what I want to get into below.

whoa, man, whoa. What a ride that was like dang, infobomb and, like, dang man that was so good!! Just, so much to process though so forgive me while I try and organize my thoughts.

First, okay, so Topaz is great. She’s great. I really hope we see her again

Surprising but also not surprising - a Diamond shattered Pink Diamond. I know that’s been discussed at length because, among other things, in real life, only diamonds can cut diamonds. I figured that would come into play somehow, since its a pretty well-known fact. But Gems don’t necessarily follow gemstone rules so

Also, another Gem I love, Zircon. The defendant one. She figured it out, something no other Gem seemed to have before.

Blue Diamond definitely didn’t seem to know, but Yellow Diamond? Hm. And where’s White Diamond in all of this? How is this new information going to affect the Diamond Authority? It would have to cause dissent among them. And what happened to cause a Diamond to shatter Pink Diamond? Was she growing sympathetic to the Rebel cause or was it just a power grab (perhaps caused by her weakened position due to the rebellion?)? How come so many eyewitnesses thought it was Rose that shattered her? Illusion? Shapeshifting? A straight-up lie (Eyeball seemed pretty convinced, though)? I’m so so excited to find all this stuff out

I love all the off-colors? They’re great, they’re all great, I already want to see them all again they’re great all of them

Lars’ “redemption arc,” so to speak, is so good! I love how he developed over this arc and in the episodes to come (I imagine). I’m just so looking forward to where his character goes from here and just. I just really like it. Just way to go Lars!

Also, we know what Lion is now? He’s a lion brought back to life by Rose’s tears (so Rose could heal organics too??) That’s one big ol’ mystery solved… partially solved.

Anyways, this is really scattered because that was just so much to process (also I’m fighting a migraine so I’m a little unfocused tbh) but man that was so good! So good!!

The Dandelion

So the dandelion has a loooooot of symbolism, but a few things it represents stuck out for me.

  • emotional and physical healing
  • happiness and youthful joy
  • surviving through the challenges life brings
  • and your dreams coming true

these things can apply to each character (Vilde, Isak, and Sana) right now but I feel like they are all going through a different phase of dealing with these things, and this is depicted by the way the dandelion is shown with them.

Let me explain

so first we have Vilde

she is holding onto the dandelions in her hand. Clutching onto them like she knows these dreams, challenges, and feelings she is going through exist but she is too scared to connect with them fully yet. So she is keeping them just out of reach. she can see them, she can feel them, she is aware of them however she is not ready to accept them and think about what they could mean.

so they stay in her hand, with these things just clutched in her control.

I also read somewhere that the latin name for dandelion comes from a french word that means “Lion’s Tooth” interesting that before we got this photo of Vilde holding ‘lions teeth’ while being with Eva; we had her telling Magnus that he had a lion’s cock.

coincidence? Knowing Julie I really doubt it.

Okay so then we have our flower prince Isak

This one is easy. unlike Vilde, Isak’s dandelion is tuck right behind his ear. He is actually wearing all of his feelings, challenges, the healing, the dreams the happiness. It is all here and finally Isak is in a place where he doesn’t just see it but he has accepted all of it and made it a part of who he is because it is. and he is wearing it for everyone to see.

it’s actually so beautiful for us to see this after seeing him struggle so much with everything in season 3. now he’s not just acknowledging his challenges and his feelings and his dreams, but he’s living them and sharing it with the world. He is in a good place, making everything the dandelion stands for, a part of him <3

Finally we have Sana

because this is the shot we receive before Sana sits down I believe it’s safe to say this represents Sana at the moment and the phase she is at with dealing with everything the dandelion symbolises.

Unlike the other two, Sana doesn’t even have a real life dandelion in her presence. it’s in a book…a book that she isn’t even looking at. it is next to her, she is avoiding it. pretending it doesn’t exist. Just like how she is avoiding all of her feelings and challenges and the possible happiness she could have.

she won’t let herself feel and acknowledge any of it. won’t let herself even think about those things being there. she is locking them all away to avoid any kind of pain that comes with those feelings and dreams and challenges.

she needs to heal also, but unlike Isak, her emotional pain is not healing thus why she doesn’t even have a dandelion for real. :(

to heal she needs to allow herself to feel.

the message that comes with a dandelion is also “do not give up”

and here we have Sana in this clip literally giving up the russbuss, her friends, and her bio buddy.

so yes Sana is completely avoiding the dandelion in this time.

but hopefully she won’t for long.

Guys, you know this scene where Shiro tells Keith that if he doesn’t make it off of the planet, he wants him to lead Voltron

And then Keith says “Stop talking like that, nothing’s going to happen to you.”

This is Shiro’s face after he says that:

There’s just something really off about his expression, almost like he wants to believe that what Keith is saying is true, but he knows deep down inside that it isn’t.

Do you think Shiro might’ve already known that something bad would happen to him that might possibly cause him to separate from Voltron?

Even in this scene in the Blade of Marmora episode

He said to Keith: “You’re going to have to control your emotions if you’re going to lead this group someday.” He was talking like it was a sure fact that Keith may possibly lead Voltron in the future.

Keith even tried insisting again here that nothing bad was going to happen to him, but all Shiro said is: “It’s just in case.”

Just in case for what Shiro??

And then coincidentally during their fight with Zarkon who we all know he has a connection with through the Black Lion, he just disappears randomly?

What if Shiro knew that potentially defeating Zarkon meant the same fate for him? But he kept going along with everything because he knew how important it was to keep the universe and his friends safe?

Shiro’s very selfless, so it makes sense, and we know how much everyone means to him.

This is his family right here, he’d do anything for them. Even possibly sacrifice himself. I’m not saying he’s dead or anything (I’m almost positive he isn’t), but I do believe he took the chance to risk his own safety for everyone’s sake.

And I don’t think it’s a coincidence that above everyone else, he wanted Keith to lead Voltron someday. Shiro is close to Keith (who looks at him like his brother), he knows him, he trusts him, he believes he’ll do a good job. This probably made him feel better and more at ease about having to possibly leave the group someday.

Possible Scenario for Season 3

Now I was going through some of the most recent interviews that the Voltron crew has put out in regards to season 3 and I found this little tidbit:

Look over the line highlighted in blue. Read it again. And again. Of course, Jeremy is most likely joking to point fun at all the dead Shiro jokes (and possibly Blue Lion Theory.)

But what if Jeremy is only partly joking? What if there is a scene in scenario in season 3 where Lance comes really close to actually dying?

Now odds are in season 3 there will be shift in the lion arrangements Keith definitely piloting Black and possibly Lance switching over to Red and Allura to Blue like the original counterparts. Of course there will be a lot of problems, especially among the trio of Keith, Lance, and Allura. Keith has to deal with being thrusted in to a position that he obviously never wanted and is not prepared for when all he probably wants to do is focus everything towards looking for Shiro. Lance has to deal with his insecurities of, yet again, being used as a Keith replacement and learning to deal with Red who is not happy at all and barely listens to him. Allura, not only as to deal with a Zarkon replacement in Prince Lotor, but is most likely conflicted about finding out one of the last Atleans is an evil druid (and possibly helped bring forth the rise of Zarkon) and about her own new awakened powers and the connections has with the Druids.

Now, things always hit there lowest point before they start to get better and I imagine that the lowest point for the paladins will be meeting with Lotor for the first time.  It is a battle none of them are prepared for- bonds with lions are weak, they can’t cooperate with one another, everyone is argument. Just from the teaser trailer we know Voltron is in some deep trouble.

Imagine things get so bad that Voltron can’t hold together during the battle with Lotor and the lions separate. All of them are beat up and struggling, especially Keith and Black (who of course has taken on more than he chew once more). Black isn’t responding anymore (Keith wonders if it’s become of the damage or because it has stopped because it doesn’t think Keith is worthy of piloting it any longer due to how much of a disaster this battle has been).

Lotor is firing up for another attack, aimed straight at Keith and the Black Lion (cause of course if Lotor’s destroying anyone’s lion, its going to be his daddy’s favorite).  Keith is literally a sitting duck.

Then sudden a red blur comes blasting into Black’s side, sending them out of harm’s way. Both Red and Lance take the full blunt of the blast because if there is one thing both the Red Lion and Lance would agree on it would be on protecting Keith. When the smoke clears, we see Red hovering in space, eyes dark and cracked.

Everyone is frantic, trying to get a transmission from Red to see if Lance is alright. Have several moments, everyone hears a wet cough and a weak voice call out, “Haha…finally….got Red to listen to me. Isn’t…that right girl?” Then there is silence.

The Blue Lion then goes berserk so much so that Allura can’t control her. The Blue Lion, in her rage, uses the sonic boom cannon to temporary disable Lotor’s ship weaponry which allows the Castle time to create wormhole for everyone to escape.

Once everyone is safe, they are able to get to look after Red and Lance. When they bring Lance out, he is close to death. Perhaps the Castle took damage during the attack so the healing pods aren’t working at the moment. Everyone is gathered around a faintly breathing Lance who is cradled in Keith’s arms, tearing up and hearts breaking at the prospect they might lose another paladin after Shiro.

Then Allura, determined to not lose another member of her family, uses her newly awakened powers  (which she has been hesitant to reveal to the paladins because she still associates it with Haggar) to attempt to heal Lance. Everyone, especially Allura herself, are blown away when it works and Lance awakens and everyone falls into a tearful, overjoyed group hug.

From that point on, everything would probably start to run a bit smoother for the paladin. They know about Lotor and what to expect in battling with him, Allura can freely show off her new powers without fear of judgment or that it powers will be harmful like Haggar’s, Lance will be able to bond more closely with Red, and Keith will be able to understand the consequences of being a leader and handle situations with a bit more thought to ensure no one gets hurt in future battles.

Hello! Just wondering but what do you think is going to happen in terms of the sheith relationship from the season 2 end point. I mean, you have have extensively talked about how they support each other and their chemistry but surely shiro's absence will not only leave Keith without a comfort source but will potentially leave tension between them. What do you think?

Hi!! Well to be honest, I think a lot of how Keith reacts in the future will be grounded in the past. Losing Shiro now will definitely be used to parallel what happened in the aftermath of Keberos. So I have a feeling that season 3 will start off with Keith’s initial reaction to everything being mirrored by flashbacks. This will also help further develop both characters and fill in gaps like how Shiro changed Keith’s life, what he really did after the garrison, ect.

But, with what we know up to this point, here’s some stuff about Keith’s background we can infer: Given our timetable of when Keith is kicked out–after the Kerberos mission failure news airs, but before Pidge enlists–it’s pretty heavily implied Keith left because of Shiro. He leaves almost immediately after Shiro disappears, and Joaquim has said that “[Keith] latches onto Shiro at times because Shiro’s sort of the only thing that can really calm him down and keep him in check.” The garrison covering everything up, pinning all the blame on Shiro and being unwilling to send another ship to check things out–even to just retrieve the bodies–I can see how that would make Keith blow up.

And from there, we know Keith went off in this self-imposed exile into the desert. He doesn’t just distance himself from people–he doesn’t interact with a single human for a year, instead following his instincts. Following the trail of the blue lion, throwing his everything into chasing after ghosts. Shiro’s shocked when he sees the conspiracy theory board, so we can guess that this maybe wasn’t something Keith was always into. But he was willing to get fully immersed in something entirely unconventional because he felt like he finally had a purpose again. There was a light in the dark, and he chased it. About his time in the desert and Shiro’s return, Keith says “After getting booted from the garrison, I was kind of lost, and found myself drawn out to this place. It’s like something…some energy, was telling me to search. Shiro asks what it was he’s been searching for. So, Keith talks about all these signs pointing to “some arrival last night.” His voice goes soft as he looks meaningfully back at Shiro and says:

“Then you showed up.”

So, what does that tell us about Keith?

  • He needs a sense of purpose. The garrison gave him a goal, a point of focus, and he was damn good at what he did. Top cadet of his class, the best fighter pilot when that career track is already the most competitive. After losing Shiro and leaving the garrison, Keith had nothing to fall back on. He chases after this one feeling on a whim because he’s lost, he has nothing else; it feels like his only hope, and he really wants it to actually lead him to something. He follows it because he can’t just sit by and do nothing
  • In this context, telling Keith to lead Voltron was probably the best parting gift Shiro could give. It ensures that Keith has a personal mission to keep him going, something to work towards and force him to carry on. He has to stay with the team because now he leads the team; he has to stay strong for all their sakes. And he won’t feel like he has nothing, like he just has to run away into the desert again
  • He might be more withdrawn but, with the responsibility of black lion, he knows he can’t just up and leave the team. Again, this prevents him from detaching himself from people completely. It means he won’t have to go through losing Shiro alone again, and he’ll have other people to lean on and help him through it. This time he has friends, people he can trust and start to open up to. That’s really good for him

And I mean, we’ve already seen how important staying with the team is for Keith

but, conversely, he’s already left the team once already (because he was afraid he was a danger to everyone). So we know that Keith is very much someone who believes in the “greater good” and sacrificing selfish, personal desires for the sake of others. If he feels like the universe needs him to stay with the team, then we certainly have reason to believe he will.

However, there is one thing Keith consistently values over the “greater good”:

  • In the end of season 1, he says they can’t go and save Allura, because it’s too dangerous and would put everyone at risk. About ten minutes later though, he breaks from formation and runs off on his own because Shiro’s in trouble. This despite the fact that he doesn’t have a plan and, again, it puts the rest of his team in danger

Keith and Shiro’s bond is stronger than we realize.

So after finishing season two not even 12 hours after it aired, and with many things becoming canon (aka Galra Keith), I had to go back to the first episode to watch it all again and actually understand every detail.

So we all know that Keith and Shiro were left stranded in a rocky planet full of lizard-like creatures that are not friendly at all. We see an injured Shiro, a distraught Keith and more importantly: both of them trying to desperately find each other. We see Shiro at his most vulnerable and Keith going through as many obstacles as needed: jumping across a void, running through geisers, almost dying…

He even has Shiro’s words in his mind all the time:

Let’s remember that Shiro BARELY remembers who Keith is, and their past together, in the Garrison or wherever it took place, is unclear. But Keith obviously remembers Shiro since the beginning, which is obvious since S01E01, when he rescues Shiro.

This conection, I’m positive, is bigger than what he has with Lance, Pidge or Hunk. I mean, sure, he has a bond with his fellow paladins, but hear me out: Shiro is his priority.

His connection and bond with Shiro comes from even before the other paladins even met.

Let’s start by one of the biggest moments: the Black Lion.

When Shiro is baldy hurt and in critical danger because of the alien lizards, the Lion, the one that was barely loyal to Shiro and even had an inclination for Zarkon, is still unactive while its paladin is near death. We all know Shiro had issues with his Lion that continue to develop, but what happens as soon as Keith tries to make contact with the Black Lion?

It recieves Keith. It lets Keith take control and safe Shiro. It let another paladin that had a totally different Lion hop in and take control.

You could say “yeah, Black did it for Shiro, it needed someone to control it to act and Keith was the only one, so it had no choice”, but let’s remember that Red could act without a pilot whenever Keith was in danger various times through the season. That either means that Keith has an outstanding connection to the Lions (which is totally possible, considering that he was the one to find the Blue Lion first), or the Black Lion recognized Shiro and Keith’s bond and trusted, I repeat, trusted Keith enough to control him, just as Shiro completely trusts Keith.

Which means that Shiro and Keith’s bond is gigantic, and perhaps one of the strongest within the paladins.

Also, the infamous quote:

There it is. It’s obvious. Shiro has all his trust placed on Keith, who he doesn’t even remember properly. And, oh, when did he say this? Right after he saw Keith and the Black Lion’s connection, and saw that Keith was able to lead the Black Lion without any issues, and now sees that Keith could lead Voltron.

And it’s not even a thing that happened once. It’s not just Shiro being delirious and wounded in a stranded planet with little to no hope of being rescued. He even says it again:

It is clear that this was no mistake. Shiro trusts Keith. He would place the huge duty of leading Voltron on him because he knows better than anyone of what Keith is capable, and makes sure that Keith knows.

That is the amount of trust they have in each other.

Second Moment: The Marmora Headquarters.

Now we get to see the bond from both sides: Shiro, worried to death as he sees Keith being beaten up over and over again, and Keith, still having Shiro as a predominant thought.

Shiro obviously doesn’t want Keith to go through the trials. He might die. Voltron would lose a paladin, and most importantly, Shiro might lose one of his most important conections to his past, Keith himself.

But then this scene comes up:

He smiles. There is relieve all over him when he sees Shiro coming to help him. And we know for a a fact that Keith Kogane does not smile often.

We are told that Keith is seeing his hopes and feares being materialized before him. I think the method they use is take the person’s biggest hope, and make that one hope throw all his fears at him. That would make anyone fall into despair, right?

And who is Keith’s biggest hope?

Shiro.

Takashi fucking Shirogane.

He is beaten up, has almost fainted, is losing hope, just wants the truth about his past and himself and where he comes from and who he is. But what does he want over all?

Edit: Shiro’s reaction during this moment.

So, yes, Keith is beaten up. He can barely stand up. He is weak, he is suffering, and Shiro, knowing he is in pain, intervenes without a doubt, and you know why? Because he knows how it feels to have your past torture you, to feel despair, to have your mind attack you, and he won’t let Keith go through that. So he forces his way through soldiers that could easily defeat him, as he is outnumbered, and places his own self in danger.

For Keith.

And as soon as he gets to Keith and has him with him, and he sees a soldier trying to attack Keith to take away the blade, it doesn’t even stop for a second and drops everything to go protect Keith.

To me, that’s who Shiro is: A man, broken and distraught by his past and his trauma, that will defend those he loves without doubting, even if it means that he will get hurt or die. He did the same for Matt in the Galra Prison: he placed himself in danger to save him. He did the same with Allura: he went back for her and got terribly injured in the process.

And now he does it for Keith.

Third point: Keith is growing.

This is an obvious point after he learned his Galra origins. Keith, either because of his new knowledge or because he now knows Shiro sees him as his right hand and possible future leader, becomes warmer, more open, even congratulates his teammates like Shiro does. He grows as a person and becomes more mature despite still being hotheaded:

This could be taken as him learning from Shiro, or trying to follow his advice to become a better person. Whatever it is, Keith is growing so much in a small amount of time. He is no longer a loner emo teen, but is opening to his surroundings and to new people, which we know didn’t happen before in his life since he is an orphan with almost no knowledge of his past, a loner, and a dropout.

If that is not what strong bonds do, then I don’t know what does.

More Moments:

Unlike Allura, who held a grudge against Keith for some episodes due to him having Galra blood in his veins, Shiro never attacked or was afraid of Keith. He knows his buddy is still there, that nothing has changed, and will still be there for him, Galra or not.

Keith is always checking, during battles, that Shiro is okay. He not only intervened in Zarkon’s laser at the end of season one so that he wouldn’t take the Black Lion, but he is, most of the time if not always, the first one to realize that Shiro is in trouble.

Shiro is the only one that says goodbye to him before their individual missions.

He is the first one and the most desperate to reach Shiro’s lion at the end of this season.

He is even placed as the focus of attention when they realize that Shiro is gone.

IN CONCLUSION: Shiro and Keith’s bond was extremely developed in this season and both characters, specially Keith, grew due to that bond. I hope that next season will give us more to this – specially the story of how they met – but this season did a great job developing both characters and making Keith not just a broody, emo boy with almost no time to develop.
