you know it was a good pun if someone tries to kill you for making it

I’ve been thinking about this PewDiePie situation and the right-wing response to it a bit, and I think it pretty well demonstrates the social rot at the heart of capitalist socialization.

Whenever somebody gets called out for using blatantly offensive and discriminatory language, the far right always thinks that the response is entirely performative. Everybody that is offended isn’t REALLY offended, we are just performing offense in order to play nice with “respectable” society. In other words, we are all just playing a game, and the end goal is getting ahead. Everything is a competition. Social justice is just another element in the game, and some people choose to take that route in their quest for power and social capital.

You can call this out as childish and selfish, because it is, but it also points to a much deeper problem in the way capitalism teaches us to think about morality. We are taught from a young age two conflicting narratives - that we should be kind and respectful to other people, but also that everything is a competition and you should do everything you can to be the absolute best. Those two ideas are incompatible with each other. You can’t simultaneously respect other people while viewing them as your competition in the game of life. So people normally end up predominantly recognizing one side or the other - we either decide to be especially kind and respectful to each other, or we decide to view everything as a competition.

For the people who choose the second option, morality becomes part of the game. Nothing anybody does is actually genuine - it’s all just a ruse to push other people out of the way. That’s why they can’t believe that there is anybody that actually doesn’t want to be offensive. That there are people who aren’t offensive when nobody is watching. The only reason you would ever be respectful in the first place is because other people are watching - because you’re trying to get ahead. It’s all a competition.

Some prominent parenting strategies exacerbate the problem. “You can’t do that because I say so.” If no reason is ever given, why are people doing anything? Because it’s a game. Just like school, just like work.

And the truth is, we all play that side from time to time. Everybody lies on their job application. Everybody acts way too happy to be at work. Everybody pretends to like their boss more than they do. Everybody plays nice to the horrible customers that you would otherwise strangle. Even people who choose to be genuinely kind are forced to play the game on occasion as well. And the people who chose the competitive view of the world recognize that.

So we can certainly mock and laugh at the people who can’t figure out that there are actually good people in the world who do good things out of genuine compassion. It is a laughable position. But it’s also baked into all of us from a young age in capitalist society. And that’s the real tragedy.

Too many people really view humans as inherently hostile to one another because of capitalism. Competition and profit encourage and enforce exploitation, neglect of basic human rights, and millions of preventable deaths a year.

People do look out for each other and make collective decisions for common benefit. We wouldn’t have civil or worker’s rights if it weren’t for that.

Do not dismiss all of this injustice as natural. Believe in those who stand with you.

OK so since @tom-hiddleston-god-of-mischief and other people showed interest, I bumped up my schedule and so…

Here is my ‘Craig is totally gay and was in love with the MC in college’ post!

So, first off- this is Craig Cahn and the thing that made me first think that he was gay instead of bi. (And fyi I am a Bi myself, so this is more headcanoning and exploring character and not trying to stomp on other headcanons, jsyk.)

Yeah the very first time we met. But look- divorces do happen, and do happen in a chill manner. But… let us note a couple things. One, the divorce literally only happened ‘last year’. Which could mean anywhere from (assuming this is the spring due to college letters and school timetables) 12+ to only 3-ish months ago depending on what counts as ‘last year’.

You only get a SECOND of him being uncomfortable while breaking the news before he is on even ground and is like ‘yeah it’s old news and everything is in perfect order now’. AND THE DIVORCE HAPPENED EITHER WHILE SMASHLEY WAS PREGNANT OR JUST HAD RIVER. Now, this could be a him lying, except… it’s never really brought up again as a thing? Like, we deal with Mat’s feelings for his dead wife, Joseph’s failing marriage, and etc but despite how recent it was we are lead to believe their divorce was perfectly amicable despite the timing.  (Now placing a cut here because this gets long and has more pics.)

Wouldnt asexuality be kind of a mental disorder because it doesnt benefit human evolution? Just biologically speaking, reproduction is essential for any species to keep evolving

I am not sure what post this question is in response to, but thanks for the opportunity to actually put my expensive education to use.

Lets start by talking about what “mental illness” means.

A mental illness is a condition that affects a person’s thinking, feeling or mood. Such conditions may affect someone’s ability to relate to others and function each day.

- National Alliance on Mental Illness

Mental illnesses are health conditions involving changes in thinking, emotion or behavior (or a combination of these). Mental illnesses are associated with distress and/or problems functioning in social, work or family activities.

- American Psychiatric Association

What do these two definitions have in common?

1) They explain that mental illness involves thinking, emotion, and behavior.

2) They explain that mental illnesses affect a person’s ability to function.

You’ll notice that neither of these definitions include any mention of evolution or reproduction. That’s because procreation and contributing beneficially to evolution is not a requirement of mental health.

A lot of people make the mistake of viewing mental health in terms of “normal” vs “abnormal”. I think that plays a lot into this unfortunately common idea that behaviors that aren’t biologically beneficial are “abnormal” and thus evidence of mental illness.

The truth is that mental illness is about functioning vs impairment.

The cornerstone of every psychiatric diagnosis is that it causes impairment in at least one are of a person’s life. The areas that mental health professionals usually look at are social, work, and leisure.

Now, back in the old days psychologists used to have different ideas about what “functioning” looked like. If you didn’t fit in with the strict social norms of the time, then they would argue that you were experiencing impairment in social or work life. For example, a woman who wanted to work instead of getting married and having children might be labeled as mentally ill because her desires were “impairing” her from fitting into society’s prescribed gender roles.

Thankfully we have (for the most part) moved on from that!

Now we look at functioning and impairment in terms of how well a person can live an enjoyable, fulfilling life. Some professionals also throw the idea of “productivity” into the mix, but that is very much a productive of America’s obsession with capitalism and that is a completely different rant!

Pick any mental illness out of a hat and I can tell you how the symptoms of that mental illness are likely to cause impairment in a person’s life. I can’t do that with asexuality, because asexuality does not have “symptoms” that impair a person’s functioning.

Like all marginalized sexual orientations and gender alignments, Asexuality does not inherently cause any distress or impairment. Any distress or impairment that asexual people experience is a result of society’s reaction to who they are.

Being asexual might (notice I say “might” not “does”) stop someone from having romantic relationships or from having children, but romantic relationships and children are not requirements for functioning and mental health.

You can have a rich and fulfilling social life without ever having a romantic relationship.

You can have a full, healthy, functional life without experiencing any sexual attraction.

Sex is not a requirement for life.

Sex is not a requirement for health.

Asexuality is not a mental illness because it does not cause impairment or distress.

Evolution, natural selection, and procreation have absolutely nothing to do with defining and diagnosing mental illnesses.

you know high schools really should teach all kids what credit is and what effects their credit score … instead of just the lucky few kids whose school has some class geared toward that because so few people know what credit even is or how it works.

it’s too often i hear things like “to improve my credit i’ll save up money then buy something with a credit card and then pay it off instantly with the money i saved up”

honey noooo thats not how credit works. it’s the fucking logical thing to do, but we live in a capitalist hellscape.

I’ve been following the Grenfell Tower fire story since it broke, and honestly I still can’t quite put my thoughts in order. I cannot believe that something like this happened in London. I’ve long been fascinated by large fires and how they spread, and time and time again I found myself being infuriated by the blatant disregard for fire safety in buildings with high population/occupancy. I can’t tell you the amount of nightclubs I’ve read about who chained the fire escapes closed, or the amount of buildings insulated or painted with highly flammable materials because it was cheaper. there are countless examples of this and suddenly it’s happened right in my home city. I just can’t believe it.

this is murder or the poor. time and time again the residents drew attention to faults and dangers in the building. time and time again they mentioned fire risk, inadequate escape routes, faulty electronics. a local action group was even threatened with legal action for mentioning these things on an online blog. to top it all off, the flammable coating on the outside of the building was put there to improve the sight of the block for nearby luxury apartments. they coated that building in a fire trap because some rich residents in flats worth millions thought the flats were unsightly, and now 30 people are dead and 70 are missing, believed dead. austerity kills. capitalism literally kills.

to top it all off, the block had a “stay put” policy for fires. what the hell? from the moment you’re old enough to conceive what fire is, you’re told that if a building is on fire, you get out. yes, flats are “designed” to contain fires, but fire does not operate under consistent rules. the slightest variation in environment can cause fire to do things people would deem unlikely or even impossible. interior fire doors mean fuck all when all the windows are open on a hot summer night, and the outside of the building is coated in flammable material. those poor people should never have been told to stay put. by the time they realised the fire was that large, the hallways were so full of smoke even firefighters couldn’t reach them. I just cannot believe this happened. I cannot believe over 100 people might be dead in London’s richest borough, all because they’re low income and no one gave a shit about keeping their accommodation up to standard. I feel sick thinking about it.

triggeredmedia  asked:

I demand you buy me a Ferrari. If you don’t you are denying my right to one. How is that different than you demanding I buy you food and healthcare? If you say “I need food to live” then you are saying I owe you labor because you exist. The fact that it’s a little labor or a lot of labor doesn’t equation. No one owes you anything just for existing.

So, essential goods are the same as luxury items?

This is the argument you make when you have nothing better to say. When you have no real argument against something this false equivalency bullshit is what you have to resort to.

You see the world full of individuals who purely exist to exchange labor. What I see is that our society has been built collectively over millennia. Together we have built governments and architectural marvels, sustained our existence and built everything you see around you. There was no single person who labored to create anything, it has taken collective knowledge and skill.

Now we must ask a question why do we have people that do not have enough to eat?

If we are to believe capitalism, it is because food is scarce and that there is not enough to feed everyone. In this line of thinking, we produce not enough food and supply and demand requires that those that can afford our limited supply are able to secure food while those that don’t have the means cannot.

But we produce enough food to feed 10 Billion people, while there are only 7.5 billion people in the world.

So if we are producing enough food to feed all, why does everyone not have access to food? How does a system that is dependent on Supply and Demand create a system where there is a surplus of food while 1 in 9 people do not have enough food to lead a normal lifestyle?

Artifical Scarcity is why. We create a system where supply and demand do not actually apply, where companies regularly discard large amounts of perfectly good food in order to drive greater profits for their “perfect food.” This is why you don’t allow capitalist near anything that is a necessity to live. In order to turn a profit, they must create scarcity in something that is not scarce.

So, if we collectively produce more food than we need worldwide, why can we not feed the world?

We are calling for taking our existing system and saying, we produce more than enough food for all, everyone must be able to eat. This is not a difficult thing to pull off, and if we lived in a truly capitalistic system the price of food would be so low that everyone could afford it. Basic Supply and Demand would set pricing.

But to take it a step further, if food was available to all, the price of feeding oneself would be less. In the end, you are arguing that you should pay more for food and healthcare so that a small group of people can become wealthy beyond their wildest dreams while another larger group dies.

When you argue that a good that is not constrained by supply should be limited all you do is argue that you should pay more so that others cannot have access.

Do you really have to feel special that bad? Oh, I guess that is why you asked for a Ferrari…

- @theliberaltony

Liberalism is the dominant ideology of the capitalist mode of production, and here are the four ways in which it is most often expressed. Notice that all of these “opposing” expressions support capitalism and private property rights (the top-down ownership of collectively-used utilities and resources by capitalists, landlords, and rentiers). What do George Bush, Ron Paul, Hillary Clinton, and Bernie Sanders all have in common? They’re all liberals – they all champion an ideology that supports the status quo relations of society, with slight variations to give the illusion of diametric opposition. When push comes to shove, they support capitalist interests first and foremost.

The difference between laissez-faire capitalism and state-interventionist capitalism is, to quote Eugene Debs, merely a disagreement over the spoils and not over the fundamental ideological principles – ultimately the capitalist class is still in charge and society is still structured with their interests and goals in mind. (And it’s worth mentioning that all of these forms of liberalism are state-interventionist to the extent that capitalist class interests need to be protected – imperialist foreign policy and tax breaks and bailouts for the rich are enacted by all variations of liberalism because these policies aid capital accumulation, the engine that keeps the system going.) Liberalism is irrevocably tied to capitalism, ideologically and materially.

If you're poor your entire life in America, it's not capitalism's fault. It's more likely that you're a lazy fuck who's bad with money and has no motivation.

I really love asks like this, because if you think about it, I’m pretty sure there are scads of rich people out there who literally do NOTHING, nothing at ALL, nothing meaningful, nothing original, nothing of note or interest, who inherited their money and get catered to every second of every day, and yet it’s poor people who are “lazy fucks.”

You’ve got rich fuckers with names like Hieronymous Grant III who inherited a trust fund, didn’t bother going to college, who spends his days doing minimalist interior design because “it’s what he loves” and yet he’s not nearly as lazy as a homeless person who lost their job and can’t get back on their feet and might starve to death on the street.

Y’all are something else.

- Mod A

The Democrats are honestly, objectively, the most idiotic party in this country if they exist as a party actually trying to gain seats and not as some complex money laundering or fraud scheme pulling in billions from like ten very wealthy Libs in NY & LA.

I mean, everything from their rush to the right by compromising on every single policy goal before even getting into office and announcing the policy to appease Republicans who will never actually vote for them over their own party in anything but totally inconsequential numbers, to actively trying to blunt the impact of actual Leftist movements by fiercely adopting rabid right-wing talking points on single payer healthcare feasibility to their suicidal insistence that nothing is actually wrong at all everything is fine.

I mean, this country has a lot of things that are fundamentally broken. The Right-wing parties have made tremendous gains because they’re vocalizing that fact, they’re saying that we’re in the midst of a generation-killing opioid epidemic, that while the economy has recovered for a handful of firms on Wall Street the average family is just as economically insecure as in 2008, our savings just as depleted, earnings even lower and jobs even less secure even if there are more of them and that something needs to give or something needs to change. They’ve taken to blaming foreigners & minorities for all societies ills, to catastrophic results.

The Left, largely, blames capitalism for the issues we’re facing, that attacking our problems via universal healthcare & universal basic income or at the very least a living minimum wage & stronger workers unions will fix a lot of the issues at hand.

The Centrists & the soft-Right, the people that make up the Dems, though, they insist that nothing is wrong. Everything is fine. They run and lose on campaigns of ‘America Is Already Great’, empty rhetoric that hedges bets against itself even as they’re announcing it, promises that come with the caveat ‘this is the best we can offer, and we’re willing to settle for much worse’. They see a healthcare crisis and they’ll offer you a partial tax credit reimbursement on discounted Uber rides to the emergency room and say that preserving a system you can’t even afford a plan in is a tremendous victory for all of us, and that pushing for single payer universal healthcare is a ridiculous pipe dream and you’re a piece of shit purity-testing loon if you point out how much money they get from insurance companies every year to say that.

The Republicans are wrong. Deeply, fundamentally, they are wrong, and they are bad for this country but the Democrats are deeply, fundamentally stupid and they’ll let the Republicans get away with anything if the alternative is even the tiniest bit of socialism.

me: so, what’s the truth?

The Tumblr Poetry Aesthetic, or: the stars, the sea, Icarus, dark suburbia, and the (un)intentional pandering and ungrowth of the well-established

this conversation was initiated for me (madina) personally by giana @syrupbrat and stefan @travelingsalesman. epoch discussed this extensively in our discord chat, and the content of this post is mostly pulled out of that discussion.

When browsing through the usual tags used to promote one’s own writing on Tumblr, such as #inkstay, #spilled ink, #poets on tumblr, etc, we seem to drown in the sameness of everyone’s writing styles that it all is indistinct. It boils down to a haze of blah blah blah stars, blah blah blah yet another comparison to a Greek mythology figure, more love poetry, girl as dangerous, boy as god, alcohol is the only way we’ll survive.

These themes originated in what one might call the heydays of Peak™ tumblr poetry (this is starting to sound like a school essay & smh I can’t let this post go that direction), circa 2013(?)-2015. Most of it was documented in @nosebleedclub‘s “Memories of a Certain Spring: A Workbook” – Nosebleed Club was, in fact, what you would point at if you were asked in 2014 what “Tumblr writing” is (cue the emphasis on was, the evolution of NBC continues until now & I feel like a proud daughter about it). Multiple networks and groups have then spanned from that model, some which are still going until now, some abandoned and left to the dust – just so that you could be part of that “elite cool kids club”, whether the original one or not. the writers in the original collective also had their writing styles copied and/or plagiarized to capitalize off how prevalent and popular this aesthetic is but nvm that’s not my place to extensively rant about

I do love the stars. The sea, mythology, dangerous teenage gods, I love them all and I honestly would die for them (yes, the planets, ocean, and those tragic myths included) – but when people write about them just because they think it’ll be popular, just because it fits into the predefined box of what is proven to be well liked – an aesthetic that has since consumed us – exploration and experimentation dies, and that’s when it becomes dangerous. Everything posted will only be the product of rehashing and emulating what has been written and consumed before – shallow imageries without anything to say, without anything to make it yours. It got over-commercialized fast and crumbled. Let’s not even mention those who made a fake persona to make their poetry feel more “real” and authentic, those who write about drugs and alcohol w/o experiences backing them up and only stereotypes & what other people have written about it.

This phenomenon is further supported by Tumblr itself being a bad site in general bad platform for writing on its own – those notes, those likes and reblogs, really do shape up to define you, whether you’re conscious of it happening or not. We all crave for that feeling of being noticed because that’s just how it is. I myself can’t even say I never wrote something just for those notes, and I’m sure others that started out writing in Tumblr can say the same. If you don’t realize it yourself; if you don’t become self-conscious of the fact that really, Tumblr is a bubble, and do not actively seek out for anything new because you don’t see the need for it – you get stuck in it. Even if you wrote with the aesthetic that we all fell in love with, there’s a chance that you won’t get the recognition you think it deserved – it crushes you, and the cycle repeats again.

(this aesthetic, in turn, bled and drenched almost every tumblr roleplay until they all became the same and unrecognizable individually, whether with the usual tropes of characters: Sad Rich Girl With A Heart Of Gold. Bad Rich Boy With A Heart Of Gold. Gay Guy With A Bad Past So He’s Hypersexual Now – or situational: your edgy Welcome To This Small Suburban Town Where Everyone is a Supernatural Creature, or perhaps your This Is A Simulation of a Real Life Town for People Who Have No Lives)

Personally, I do believe in the existence of Bad Poetry – though “underdeveloped” is the word I prefer to use (maybe it’s just because I’m a softie and I can’t say outright that it’s bad, but let’s be real, bad poetry is bad poetry). No soul and nothing else to offer than just a few pretty words and fleeting concepts. Pseudo-profound bullshittery. u wanna get off it?

  • internalize the fact that we unconsciously seek for approval
  • get off tumblr for a while and write in your solitude
  • consume more than u write.
  • explore & experiment upon different themes and structure. get out of your comfort zone in writing
  • write about your own memories and experiences, whether good or bad or interesting or not interesting, not what is deemed is consumable
  • turn to your culture and read up those local myths

– Honestly, I don’t know how because it cannot be forced. But recognizing that this exists will in turn make you think even more critically about your writing.

oh, that’s it – be critical. To the words that surround you & the words that come out of you.

To close this off: “its Everywhere like i get it . u wanna be a vampire cheerleader with a smile too big. i Get it . lets do something else” - @arckhaic

from what I’ve seen all the negative reviews of Neo Yokio are coming from 30+ y/o’s who are angry that it is “incomprehensible” and doesn’t “leave time for the humor to hit” and that is “doesn’t do a perfect job at critiquing capitalism” but then you got the Gen Y’s and Z’s loving the show because it’s literally existentialist surreal meme humor personified and it really shows how fucking strange and irreplaceable the current fast paced internet influenced humor of the youth is
