Spirit Working Cycles

[Disclaimer: This is my personal upg of your body’s natural cycle. Some people have reported either not having a hyperactivity period or having them so subdued that it isn’t an issue, so just use my post as a guideline for discovering your own needs. And natural fallow periods aren’t the cause for every downtime out there, some will be caused by blocks such as past trauma, energetic blockages, spirit influence, sickness and more. Some of those do require some sort of intervention and are good to get rid of!]

One of the biggest things I’ve seen you guys distressed over are the times where you are not working with your spirits! You’re not communicating (if you can communicate at all during this time), you aren’t really aware of their presence, you go ages without wearing their vessels, you just don’t have the strength to keep up with the work you want to do!

And then you grow frantic and anxious over what the spirits are thinking about you. You’re afraid of them hating you and leaving for how long you’ve been ignoring them. Or maybe they could be depressed by your sudden lack of interest, like you’re their best friend who suddenly cut contact and is ignoring their texts and calls. You may be worried about all this during your period of inactivity and can’t fix things despite being aware of them. Maybe the stress is even making it worse than before and now you can’t feel them no matter how hard you try!

So when you start to get in a better spirit working state, you’re afraid of speaking to them now, afraid of what they’ll say and if they hate you and if they’ll ever accept you back as a friend…

Guys, this is totally normal. This is a natural body cycle (well, psychic body cycle!) just like menstruation! I haven’t heard nearly as many people talking about it as I would expect, so let me break down your spiritual fallow periods!

The graph is divided into three horizontal sections: Hyperactivity, Normal State, and Fallow Period. The colored vertical sections are parts I want to pay particular attention to. And finally the curving black line represents your spiritual state.

Area 1: Here, you’re in a state of growth. This is fantastic! You’re learning and improving!

Area 2: You are neither growing nor declining, but there is nothing wrong with this. Many people spend the majority of their time in stasis, their growth periods coming in sudden, sharp increases. Others will almost constantly be in a state of growth too gradual to see. Any way is okay as long as it is your way!

Area 3: This is your decline stage. It isn’t quite a fallow period, but you may notice that you are not quite as sharp as usual or have trouble concentrating on spirit activity. This is fine, it is your body preparing itself for a state of growth, recovering from large energy use, or just focusing on other things. You can also enter a period of stasis before your new growth period as your body recharges. If you feel you are in a stasis period after declining, take some time for both spiritual and mundane self care!

Area 4: Here you have peaked into a time of hyperactivity.. Your senses are better than ever before and your spirit working skills are on fire. This is not necessarily a good thing! Many people don’t know how to manage themselves during this time and end up burning out into area 5. When I was in high school and attended band camp (which wasn’t really camp as much as it was all day summer practices), most parents gave their kids twenty dollars for the entire week’s lunch. As one might expect, the kid spent the entire twenty dollars on day one and spent every other day either hungry or bringing whatever scraps they could find at home. This lack of saving is similar to what you might do during your hyperactivity stage! I’ll speak more later on how to manage this stage.

Area 5: This is a sharp decline after the hyperactivity stage due to burning out. It is possible to exit the hyperactivity stage without going into such a decline, but it cannot be avoided every time. This type of decline typically happens in a very short period of time, even overnight.

Area 6: Here is the moment you’ve been waiting for: your fallow period! This is not a bad thing! Essentially this is your body’s way of resting and recharging so that it can stabilize itself to go back into spiritual matters. Your senses may be distant or nonexistent, your communication may be difficult even with the use of tools, and you may feel a disconnect from spirit work in general. Do not panic and push yourself to do spirit work; you will only damage yourself and spend more time in this state! Strive for self care right and grounding right now. It is perfectly fine to separate from spirit work right now and even recommended for some people. Dive back into the mundane world!

Area 7: Finally, you’ve exited your fallow period! Many people go through growth after their fallow periods because their bodies are so fresh from recharging. Don’t burn yourself out, but feel free to have some celebratory communication with your spirit friends!

So you’re saying my fallow periods aren’t abnormal? They’re good?

ABSOLUTELY! Not only are they good, but they are necessary for you to maintain your abilities! Going without fallow periods would be like going without sleeping. You would eventually crash and burn from the lack of rest, and then your fallow period would be more akin to being knocked unconscious than a good night’s sleep. Don’t try to push them away.

And my spirits really don’t care?

Your spirits are more attuned to spiritual needs than humans. Not only are they going to be aware of this cycle, but they may go through it too. Almost everything goes through it. If you’ve been with a spirit for a long time, you may have noticed times where they don’t communicate much or fade into the background. They also go through periods where they have difficulty communicating with physical creatures. Some will hide this very well, while others will be very upfront on the subject.

How often should I be getting these? How long should they be?

This depends entirely on yourself. Everyone has a different natural cycle. Some people will have cycles of sharp increases and decreases, with every stage lasting in bursts. Others will have almost constant growth, but it is so gradual that they feel as if they are in permanent stasis. Your fallow periods are going to be whatever your body needs. If you need longer periods to recharge then it will be longer, and perhaps lessened in intensity. Others will have shorter periods, but they are more intense because your body has to dip so far down to recharge so quickly. It is not always even, either! Most people have fairly even patterns within their cycles, but it is possible to be everchanging. As for your hyperactivity, this is usually a sharp, albeit short-lived, spike.

Now onto how to manage your cycle!

Signs of entering a hyperactivity period:

  • Pressure, vibrations, buzzing, or other unusual sensations in your third eye and other energy centers
  • Psychic senses are suddenly intensified, possibly to the point of discomfort
  • Feeling as if you are not grounded
  • Difficulty grounding
  • Floating sensation
  • Headaches
  • Disconnection from reality; disassociation
  • More attuned to the astral and physical planes than your physical body
  • Others notice that your energy is bold and even chaotic, much louder than usual
  • You attract spirits more than in your normal energy state
  • Seemingly endless energy for spirit work and other related activities
  • Sudden motivation for spirit work, you may feel an exaggeration of your skill level
  • A disregard for discernment

How to manage a hyperactivity period:

  • Ground frequently! While it may feel useless, it will help to stabilize you in the long run
  • Discharge your energy into crystals and other storage units. It will give an outlet for excess energy and give you boosts when in need
  • Attempt meditations focused around peace, calm, and stability
  • Spend time in a garden or otherwise surrounded by nature, and ground by extending your energy like roots into the earth. Doing this will help to connect yourself to the energy system around you, the plants aiding in keeping you stable
  • This is a good time to look at the big pictures of vast energy systems. Try looking at the energetic connections within a forest, or between houses in a neighborhood.
  • Do not go overboard with spirit work, energy work, magic, etc! You will not start to feel the effects of burning out until it has happened. Work on grounding and stabilizing and try to not overwork yourself.
  • Consistency is the key! Instead of spending your energy all at once, try to use this time to be consistent with your spirit senses and communication. Consistency takes much more energy than you may realize!
  • Although you shouldn’t do everything all at once, that doesn’t mean you can’t get things done right now! Feel free to work on that big project, just pay extra attention to your spiritual health and go easy.
  • Don’t get arrogant or stupid! While confidence is good and important, don’t let your abundance of energy convince you to summon a nuclear doom spirit of death without protection. You will regret power trips.
  • Practice discernment! You may feel concrete in your senses right now but it is just as important as ever
  • PROTECTION!! Some people become larger beacons for spirits during this time, so up your protection and be wary of strange spirits. Even if you do not become more attractive than normal, energy siphoning spirits will still be drawn to the excess of food in you
  • Be extra polite to local spirits. Perhaps put up a ward to quiet your energy to others or if possible avoid going into particularly active locations. Even if they have no wish to snack on you, the loud energy can be obnoxious.

Signs of entering a fallow period:

  • Disinterest and lack of motivation for spirit work, energy work, and magic
  • Psychic senses are distant or nonexistent
  • Tools seem to fail or are difficult to understand
  • You do not naturally notice telepathic speech from spirits
  • Discernment is difficult, or you may feel that nothing is real
  • Attempting spirit work, energy work, or magic exhausts you
  • You are constantly distracted when attempting to meditate or astral travel
  • You think less of your spirits throughout the day
  • You are more drawn to mundane activities, such as watching tv, and feel the need to skip or pay less attention to daily exercises
  • If you feel guilt over ignoring your spirits, you are still unable to communicate well
  • Sudden frustration with your lack of ability and progress, feeling as if you have retrograded
  • Sadness or other negative emotions at the sudden sense of disconnect from your spirits, as if your bonds have disappeared

How to manage a fallow period:

  • Focus on the mundane world! Your body is not meant to be overworking itself on the nonphysical right now
  • Work on gentle physical self care
  • As you breathe in, visualize energy in your body like liquid streams of light collecting and brightening in your third eye and any other places you use as psychic energy organs. As you breathe out, it gently diffuses outwards back throughout your body, dimming as it is once again returned to its regular density. This helps to keep your psychic energy points in shape.
  • Visualize your energy like before, but when you breathe in it flows in a steady, circular cycle upwards from the tip of your toes through your chest. Let it pass through your third eye, and as you breathe out it completes the second half of the cycle by curving downwards, flowing through and cleansing that side’s energy centers as it does so. Rather than being in a single ball, the energy is in a constant, equal flow like the blood in your veins. This helps to keep your energy clean and flowing and cuts down the risk of stagnation during your fallow period.
  • If you must do any sort of spirit or energy work, make sure it is very slow and gentle like the two exercises above. It must not conflict with your body’s rest. If you wish to practice meditation, don’t do anything requiring long periods of focus or that demands energy. Try doing meditations for sleep or calm which do not involve any spirit contact, but only focus on relaxing your body.
  • Spiritual protection based in the physical plane is very good to have for when your fallow periods occur! These are things such as witch jars and large scale crystal grids. It is easier to keep these clean and working, since you may not be able to sense purely nonphysical protection like wards at all.
  • If you wish to remind your spirits that you have them in your thoughts, include them in a daily meal by offering its energy as you eat. Simply thinking this will most likely be enough for them to hear, but if you want to be certain, say it aloud or whisper it if with company!
  • Before you go to bed, invite your spirits to sit with you as you tell them about your day, no matter how mundane. Even if you can’t sense them around you, this will show them that you are still keeping them in your thoughts and taking the time to include them in your day!
  • However, it’s also okay to simply push spirit work to the back of your mind and focus on pressing mundane matters. They will understand.
  • Above all, remember that your spiritual self is resting and recharging. Do what your own body needs to encourage this rest. Don’t try to rush past it or forcibly stuff energy into yourself, most likely you’ll end up hurt and elongating this period.

So hopefully this guide will help on the stress everyone seems to get during their fallow periods! It’s always important for us to understand the natural workings of our bodies, whether physical or nonphysical. Start including your daily thoughts on your current location in your body’s cycle to start recognizing your patterns, and maybe to even predict when your natural downtimes will occur!

Three knocks, that’s all it took before Steve opened the door. He stood there, wearing a tank top and sweats, and his hair damped from sweat, which only meant he just came back from the gym.

“Hey, didn’t expect you here today.” He smiled, waving you in.

“I know, but I needed to talk to you.”

You walked in to his apartment, and plopped down onto his couch. His place was like your second home. You were always there, and if you weren’t, then you two were at your place.

“Beer?” He asked, walking to the kitchen.

“Nah, just water.”

Steve tossed you a water bottle, as he started back toward the living room where you waited.

You took a big swig of the water and felt the cold liquid trickle down your throat. Making you feel somewhat at ease.

“So what did you need to talk to me about?” Steve asked, leaning against the wall across from you.

For some reason you were feeling nervous. Which was strange. Steve was your best friend. You two were so close, you were able to talk to him about anything. He’s seen you in sweats with no makeup on. He’s helped you when you were a drunken mess. And yet, you were somehow nervous about this topic.

“Y/N.” he snapped his fingers, catching your attention. “You okay?”

You slowly nodded, running your hand through your hair. Something you did when you were nervous.

“So my sister is throwing a couples party tomorrow night, and when I RSVP’d a month ago, I was dating Jared-”

“The asshole.” He cut you off.

“Woah, language.” You teased.

He dramatically rolled his eyes and huffed. “Anyways, go on.”

“As I was saying, I told her I’d go and now she’s expecting me to be there.”

“So?” He drawled out.

You swallowed hard, meeting your best friends gaze.

The things you do for this guy; you had a soft spot for Jimin, he was like an older brother to you. The one you never had, he really needed a roommate and soon you became friends, that was after realising you guys had mutual friends. Well, now you were living with Jungkook for Jimin’s sake.

Noctis can’t believe that he’s still alive. He can’t believe that he gets a second chance––he wakes up on the floor of the throne room and feels the warmth of sunlight on his face. The first thing he does is bolt back outside, and sees that his friends are still alive as well. After a brief reunion, he runs back home, to you.

He makes love to you that night, vigorously, sensually, as if he’s finally breached the surface of the ocean and is able to take in his first exhilarating breath. The passion takes you two over and you fall asleep in each other’s arms.

Noctis sets to work on rebuilding the Citadel. The moment you tell him that you’re pregnant, he falls to his knees, holds you close and thanks the Six for his gift. A family––he can hardly believe it. He becomes the King that Insomnia has always deserved, and dotes on you hand and foot. He promises to be a dedicated father and husband, and he never disappoints you. He cherishes every moment he’s able to spend with you as your womb grows, because he knows that every minute is a blessing from the Astrals.


Prompto emerges from the final battle alive, but badly injured. He hobbles home to you and you take care of his wounds, teasingly scolding him that he was trying too hard to be a hero. He jokes that he figured it would impress you, and you smack him playfully on the arm as you bandage up his wounds.

It’s a while until he’s healthy, but as soon as he’s able, he’s between your legs. He wants every part of you, wants to map every inch of your skin with his lips, hands and tongue. You give yourself fully to him, taking him in for all he’s worth.

You tell him that you’re pregnant some time later, and he starts to cry. You think at first that he’s upset at the news, that maybe he wasn’t ready to be a father, but he immediately dispels the idea. He tells you how much he’s wanted to start a family with you, and how excited he is to be a dad. He just can’t help but be emotional because he’s been through so much with his brothers in arms, and never expected to find love, and never expected to make it out of that last standoff alive.

His enthusiasm for fatherhood takes shape in the form of nesting. He’s already picked the colours for the nursery and bought most of the things you’ll need, and already gotten way too many stuffed moogles and chocobos for your future son or daughter. He spoils you rotten, and always kisses your growing belly before he falls asleep.


Gladio promised you before he left for the final battle that once it was over, he was going to marry you. You were so scared that he wouldn’t come back––but when he shows up at your shared house, covered in dirt and blood, you throw your arms around him and refuse to let go. He did it. He came home.

The wedding is small and intimate, with your closest friends in attendance. Neither of your parents made it out of the Citadel alive, so you light candles for them at the altar. That night, Gladio absolutely ravishes you, having to keep himself from ripping the white gown from your body. You consummate your marriage over and over until you’re unable to walk and he is finally sated.

You tell Iris that you think you’re pregnant, and she helps you buy the test from the pharmacy. When it comes back positive, you’re initially nervous about what Gladio will say. But when you tell him, he gingerly wraps his arms around you in a warm embrace, and you feel tears on your shoulder. You ask him if he’s crying, and he hastily wipes his eyes. Putting his macho façade back on, he replies, “No.”

Gladio buys parenting books and tries to come up with names for your unborn child. He wants to be a better father than Clarus was to him. He also wants to carry on the tradition of naming the Amicitia heir after a flower, and you bicker playfully back and forth over which ones are your favourites.


Ignis didn’t know how to say goodbye to you before the final battle, so he slipped away in the night without a word. You were furious with him when he returned, but also so relieved when he came back alive. You wanted to slap him, but instead you tugged him close for a kiss. He was scared that you would be upset with him, and you admit that you are, but now is his chance to make it up to you.

And he does––repeatedly, with blindfolds, rope and leather. You’re a trembling mess under his questing fingers and his clever mouth, and by the time he’s finished with you, you’re almost entirely sure that he’s sucked every bone from your body and left you with nothing but sore muscle and bruised skin.

It’s almost as if Ignis knows that you’re pregnant before you do. He notices a difference in your behaviour, the smells that you’ve become sensitive to, and your demands for strange food combinations. He offers to buy you a pregnancy test to be sure, though he’s already purchased prenatal vitamins in anticipation.

You’re not sure how he, as a blind man, is able to baby-proof the house, but he does. He takes such good care of you that you start to feel bad, and try to get him to stop, but he refuses. He tells you that you and your unborn child are the family he never really had, and that he will do whatever it takes to ensure your safety and comfort. You eventually just let him dote on you, and he ends up being more prepared when you are when your due date actually arrives.

Summary: Neither Dan or Phil has ever had a boyfriend before and they think that part of the reason might be because nobody even realises they like boys.  So, as best friends do, they decide to pretend to date each other, that way at least it’s obvious they aren’t straight.  And with an agreed upon set of boundaries, nothing can go wrong.  Right?

“Oh my god, it’s you two!”

Yoongi flinched. It was bad enough trying to make small talk with everyone at the table without some random person from a different table tapping him on the shoulder and talking to him too.

“What two?” He asked. He was fairly sure he had never seen the person before, but they looked far too happy to see him to be a stranger.

“You two!” The man said, and the women he was sitting with squealed.

“Don’t tell me you don’t know?” She gushed.

“Do I want to?” Yoongi couldn’t help it, he just wanted the day to be over—not because he wanted to get you alone, or because he wanted to get to know you better (he couldn’t get to know you in front of people who thought he already knew you so well) that would be ridiculous. He was just tired.

“Yoongi, who’re your friends?” Taehyung asked, drawing the rest of the table’s attention.

“Oh, we don’t know each other.” The man said quickly, and Yoongi glanced over at you. You looked just as confused as he felt, which was no help at all.

“We saw them on youtube.” The women said happily.

“You saw who?” You said, eyes wide.

“What kind of video?” Jungkook asked suspiciously.

“I’ll show you!” The women dug her phone out of her purse, pulling up something on it before passing it over to Yoongi. “It’s trending.”

There on the screen, you and Yoongi sat at the baby grand piano playing “Heart and Soul.” Both of you were laughing, nudging each other when one made a mistake. What caught Yoongi’s attention though was the way you looked at him in the glances you sent his way. He had seen them earlier, of course, but thought they were his imagination. There was a sparkle in your eyes, and something so genuine in your smile. The worst part was how he looked back at you.

The two of you looked like the perfect couple—happy, loving, and comfortable with each other. The comments were full of people saying that they wanted a relationship like that, and asking “when are they going to get married?”

Yoongi wanted to leave. He wanted to stand up and walk out of the restaurant, his job be damned. He could catch a cab back to the airport and never see you again, delete your contact from his phone and erase you from his mind.

His gaze gets caught there, distracted for the first time since they started.

Ronan looks as well, but it’s dark out now and all he can see is the shadow box reflection of the room against the black behind. Set against the rest of it, Adam’s hunched over reflection looks small and dark. Ronan is little more than a few swaths of stark negative space cut against the white glow. Neither of them has a halo.

After what Bitty has been referring to in his own head as “The Incident” (with capital letters and all), things between the lax team and the hockey team are… Better? Naturally, Bitty couldn’t tell his team about what had happened, and in fact hadn’t even been pressured to; the teammates who’d been in the house at the time hadn’t even realized he was gone until he was strolling back through the door. So much for having each other’s backs, Bitty had mumbled to himself as he rolled out his pie crust.

But that had been nearly a month ago, and since then, the hockey team hadn’t been over even once to bang at the door with complaints– not even when the house had hosted a party two weeks ago and their music had been loud enough for the bass to be felt a full block away. It’s unusual behavior, and Bitty would be lying if he ever tried to say he isn’t curious about it. The way he sees it, they’re probably just feeling guilty over the whole kidnapping thing. Which is probably fair, all things considered, and Bitty appreciates their consideration. For the most part.

Despite the hockey team’s apparent peace with the lacrosse team, they do still seem a little spiteful. Either that, or Bitty is projecting his own spite onto them; he’s been sitting at the house’s kitchen table for a full two hours now, picking at a now cold tray of bagel bites as he tries to finish an essay. It’s not due until the next Monday, a fact that has Bitty thanking any and all gods who may exist, because there is no way in hell he can finish it tonight with the loud music blaring from across the street. Bitty keeps finding himself bouncing a leg to the beat and staring blankly at his laptop instead of actually writing, and after the fourth time, he finally sighs and slams the thing shut, sliding it perhaps too roughly into his backpack. He deposits the entire bag safely by the stairs before he heads out.

The station is larger than you imagined, and you’re not quite sure where you’re going. At this point you’re just following instinct. You move through the halls, Dick’s call still fresh in your mind. “Mom, it’s Bruce. You need to come now … it’s bad.” You hadn’t been able to make out anything after that, the tears had muffled his voice too much.

          As you turn the final corner it’s to see your boys, and the entire league. You try not to think about how bad it must be, for those looks to be on their faces. You pause for a moment, cherishing the last few minutes that you pretend everything’s okay. Then you rush forward.

          The boys see you immediately, and it takes no prompting, they rush to you. Despite having been taller than you for several years now, the oldest three seem so small, and Damian, your poor sweet baby, he seems so scared. They cling to you, and you do your best to comfort all of them assuring each of them that it’s going to be okay.

          After they’ve calmed down a bit you move forward and then you stop. There’s no love lost between you and Talia. You’ve seen the woman maybe twice in the four years since Damian has come to live with you. She’s no mother in your eyes, and she certainly doesn’t have a claim to your son.

          You decide to focus more on the doctor. He confirms what Dick said on the phone. It’s not looking good, and it will all depend on the surgery. There’s a less than ten percent chance that Bruce will be able to be the man he was before this. That reassures you in some weird way, Bruce has always been able to beat the odds.

          Finally, you take a seat. Your back is hurting, and your ankles are swollen, and technically, you’re supposed to be in bed at the moment. But, extreme times call for extreme measures. One hand goes to rest on your protruding belly, as the boys sit down beside you.

          Dick is the first one to break the silence, “So how’d your doctor appointment go? Bruce was so bummed to miss it.”

          You smile at that Bruce had been to every pregnancy check before this one. He had been so upset to miss this one. You hadn’t planned this. As far as you were concerned you had your hands full with all the boys. But one glass of wine too many had led to a forgetful night.

          Some part of you had expected the boys to be disappointed. But they had met the idea of a new sibling with enthusiasm. In fact, one of the boys would typically go with you and Bruce to the appointment.

          “Did the doc finally tell you what you’re having?” Jason asks with a grin “It’s another boy, isn’t? Something tells me Bruce is only for making boys. Look at the squirt.”

          Damian scowls at the nickname, but he doesn’t argue with Jason’s statement. If you had expected anyone to be upset about the pregnancy it had been Damian. The boy had clung to his blood tie with Bruce for so long, you had worried about him feeling threatened. Instead, he had taken to the role of big brother rather seriously.

          It had started out with him and Tim inspecting everything you ate. Then he had researched everything needed for a helping a healthy baby grow. Classical music had been playing non stop around the manor. Then one day, you had walked into what had been designated as the baby’s room, just to consider paint colors, to find that it had already been painted a soft yellow.  

          And there was Damian, working on mural. It was this pretty field of flowers, a nature scene. For a while you had just watched him paint before all of a sudden he had simply said, “It’s going to be a girl. And she should have a happy, and pretty place to grow up. Somewhere she can always feel safe.”

          You had gone to him, and pulled him in close, not worrying about the paint staining his clothes and said, “Every child should have that Damian. I can only hope Bruce and I provided that for you and your brothers.”

          Damian had simply hugged you back and said, “I’ve never felt safer than when I was surrounded by this band of misfits.”

          You just laughed, because of course he couldn’t call it what it is, “A family.”

          Coming out of the memory you find everyone silent, and you take a moment to examine them. They’re still dressed in their uniforms and they’re covered in dirt.

          Quietly you suggest they go shower and change, when they protest, you tease and say that their stench is making you feel ill. That gets them going. A few of the League members inquire after you and the baby. Eventually they too leave, and then it’s just you and her.

          Neither of you says anything until you can’t take it anymore and you finally ask, “What are you doing here Talia?”

          She turns to face you, radiant as ever, her eyes as cold as ever. “My son and his father needed my assistance?”

          “Is that a question or an answer Talia, because I’m not buying it. The boys are too distraught to see it, and the League doesn’t know you well enough to see it, but I do. I know everything about you Talia. I’ve read every part of the file Bruce has on you, and I won’t let you do it.”

          She raises an eyebrow at that, “You’d let him die? You must really want his money.” She glances at your stomach, “After all your child is legitimate, and he didn’t even have you sign a prenup.”

          You roll your eyes at that, “I care about what Bruce wants, and he told me that under no circumstances was he ever to go into the Pit. If there’s one thing in this world that scares him, it’s what that goop would do to his mind.”

          She studies you for a minute, “Then I suppose I’ll take Damian with me when I leave then.”

          “You have no right. Bruce and I have full custody. And Damian is just as much my child as any of his brothers.”

          She smiles at that, “Is he as much your child as the one in your womb? Blood is thicker than water after all.”

          You can’t help but scowl, “I hate that saying, because while I may not have given birth to those boys, while I may not share their blood, I’ve raised them. I’ve attended every parent teacher conference, shown up for every play, taken care of them when they were sick, worried every time they go out on patrol, held them after a girl broke their hearts, watched them grow, watched as they became brothers, and so much more that you will never understand.” At this point you’re right in her face, because you want your meaning to me clear, “Those boys, are my children, and blood has nothing to do with it. You just try and take Damian, and you’ll be the one to need that damn goop,”

          She looks down at you amused, “Big words for such a little church mouse. What’s the little pregnant housewife going to do?”

          You just smile, “I wasn’t always a housewife Talia. You would know that if you were actually able to find anything on me before Bruce.”

          She actually looks a little frightened now, and you know it’s your eyes, they’ve slipped into that same hardness that had made people braver than her panic. You make one last statement, “Leave now Talia, and don’t you ever threaten my children again.”

          She leaves, she never turns her back on you but she leaves. You take your seat again, and wait for him to come out of the shadows. You meet Clark’s eyes, and you can finally feel the tears start to build as he wraps an arm around you, you let them out. He just holds you while you cry, because he knows. He and Bruce are the only ones that know about your past, and he knows that it’s Bruce that keeps you grounded, that Bruce is the one that keeps you from slipping. And he knows that if Bruce Wayne dies, as soon as you’re able to, you’ll hunt down the bastard who caused it. And he knows that he’ll have to be the one to stop you.

          For that reason Clark Kent prays that Bruce Wayne pulls through, for the boys, for you, and for your unborn baby girl.

I quit writing Homestuck meta a long time ago, but I guess the pre-4/13 fervor is infectious, because this popped into my head and wouldn’t go away. So here’s some musings on Homestuck, the ending, and its portrayal (or rather, erasure) of character identity and agency.  

Let’s rewind back several years and a few subsubacts, to the meteor and battleship crews’ not so triumphant arrival in the combined session. Two of the kids’ number have been mind-controlled and forced to work for the Empress. Two have been thrown in prison. One has been banished to the outer reaches of space. The rest have been divvied up and placed on various Lands, given different tasks to be completed for the Empress. Even in beating SBURB and winning the game they have no escape, because she intends to rule the new universe they create… until it spawns Lord English and is destroyed.

Things look bleak. And things look even bleaker when Game Over rolls around, and most of the cast gets exterminated. But wait! John Egbert, Heir of Breath and leader of the Beta session, has gotten his hands on a miraculous artifact supposedly useful as a weapon against Lord English. He now has the ability to travel throughout time and space and to change things that usually cannot be changed. While his friends get wiped out, he fights the “tyrannous author” figure who has been telling their story wrong and wins. Surely with his newfound abilities, he will set things right and lead them to freedom.

Except.  Not really.

Oh sure, John “saves the day”. He uses his retcon abilities to create a new timeline where everyone lives and wins the game. But is it a victory? And did everyone really live?

I’m going to argue that the ending of Homestuck is a tragedy where characters’ identities are frequently ignored or overwritten in order to serve the utilitarian aims of the narrative (and Skaia). I do not make this argument believing Hussie intended it. I think the dip in quality and coherency at the end of Homestuck was the product of an author who was tired of his project, had lost track of a bunch of plot points and characters, and just wanted to be finished. But I do think its treatment of identity is drastically different from the rest of the work and sends some disturbing messages about how “happy” that ending really is.

When you returned to the house, both you and Yoongi were in good moods. You never would have thought you and Yoongi would (or could) be anything more than unfriendly acquaintances, but you were starting to think that maybe, just maybe, you could be friends of sorts.

All of the previous day’s tension and anger had disappeared, and it was a struggle to keep reminding yourself that none of this was real. Just because you and Yoongi had spent the day together without murdering each other didn’t mean that his arm around your waist, or the brief but oh so perfect kisses meant anything. Three days with him and you were already forgetting all the pain he had caused you.

“You two look like you had fun.” Jimin said when you walked in.

“We did.” Yoongi said, flashing you a small smile.

“We’re eating dinner on the patio, and just so you guys know, Seokjin’s about to lose it. Namjoon has already dropped three plates and he and Hoseok have been banished upstairs.” Taehyung hopped into the entry way, wobbled, then leaned on Jimin.

“Wait, why Hoseok too?” You asked.

“He thought it’d be funny to trip Namjoon.” Jimin explained. “You’re supposed to be icing your ankle, dummy.” He scolded Taehyung, who shrugged.

“I’m going to go help Soekjin.” Yoongi said quietly to you as Taehyung complained that Jimin was not his mother and could not tell him what to do.

After some coaxing, you and Jimin finally convinced Taehyung to at least sit down in the sun room instead of hopping around everywhere, and once he was settled you left to find Yoongi.

You expected to find him either in the kitchen or on the patio, but you ran into him in the living room frowning at his phone.

“Who’re you texting?” You asked, leaning over his shoulder and trying to see. You weren’t naturally a nosy person, preferring to give people their space, but you didn’t think Yoongi would mind–he didn’t seem particularly secretive (if you excluded lying to Namjoon about dating you, that is. But that was your idea, so it didn’t count).

“No one.” Before you could get a good look at his phone, he was clicking the screen off and spinning to face you. “I mean, someone. But no one important.”

You narrowed your eyes at him. If he had given you even a slightly better answer you wouldn’t have pressed the matter, but he was acting exceptionally strange. “Who then?” You asked, taking a step closer. While you still didn’t know Yoongi all that well, you felt that over the course of the day the two of you had gotten significantly closer and you didn’t mind getting a in his personal space a bit. Not to mention, physical contact between the two of you wasn’t exactly a new concept.

“What does it matter?” Yoongi asked, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “Are you jealous?”

“No.” You said quickly. Were you? You didn’t think so, just curious and getting more so by the second.

“So why do you want to know so bad?” He asked.

“Why don’t you want me to know?” You countered, and Yoongi smirked.

“Because you want to know, and this is fun.”

You debated for only a moment before reaching forward, trying to take his phone from his hand. Yoongi saw it coming, however, and held it high in the air.

“Give it here!” You demanded, reaching up on your tiptoes. If Yoongi would stop moving you’d be able to reach it, but he was apparently determined.

“Rude.” Yoongi said, not looking even slightly annoyed. If anything, he looked rather like he was enjoying himself. You jumped in one final attempt to reach the phone, at the same time Yoongi stepped backwards into the couch. If he hadn’t lost his balance, you bumping into him probably wouldn’t have been an issue, but as it was, both of you toppled over onto the couch (luckily it wasn’t the wood floor). You landed nose-to-nose with him, eyes wide, reminding you much of the previous night (except neither of you was mad at the other).

Request: Hello! Can I first of all say that your writing is incredible and I loved it so much. I was wondering if I could request an imagine where the reader and Newt Scamander have an arranged marriage, but the reader despises Newt while he adores her.

The mirror didn’t do anything wrong, yet you found yourself glaring at it. You couldn’t bear to look at your reflection, but, due to people doing your hair and makeup, you were unable to move away from the mirror.

As the finishing touches were completed, you immediately stood up to walk away from the mirror. Your mother quickly grabbed your hand to keep you from moving and gazed at the reflection of you and her. You stiffened at her touch. In the end, you looked at yourself in the mirror.

Your hair was elegant, like your makeup. The ones who did both were quite spectacular. You would have praised them both if it were not for the situation you found yourself in. Below your chin was white lace from your wedding dress. It was a beautiful dress by all means, but you felt as if it was chains, bonding you to something unwillingly.

Your mother, who was silently against the marriage, only nodded at you, hoping to give you some comfort. You wanted to scoff at her hopes. You wouldn’t be comfortable for the rest of your life. She saw the lack of effect that her nod provided and said, like every mother does at her daughter’s wedding, “You look so beautiful, darling.”

Only problem? She was not like every mother at her daughter’s wedding. This wasn’t your wedding by any account. This was your father marrying you to a stranger, a brother of a war hero. You looked at your reflection with no emotions and replied, “Thank you, Mother.”

You had tried to resist the wedding to no avail, so you decided to pretend that it was a normal wedding for Mother’s sake. Soon, you were being led to where your father was meeting you to walk you to Newt Scamander, your soon to be husband.

He didn’t offer any sympathetic glance or apology for giving your life away, but he did offer his arm stoically. You simply took it and waited for the music to play.

A wedding is supposed to be a woman’s happiest day. Yours was far from that. As you held Newt’s hands, you tried to not look pained. The vows were exchanged, yet they meant nothing to you. Newt had a dazed expression on his face throughout the ceremony.

The first kiss, which is supposed to be the first kiss as man and wife, was actually the first kiss between you and Newt. You kissed him as a person in love would and walked down the aisle with his arm linked with yours.

The reception was dull and fake. You never left Newt’s side even though you wouldn’t mind never seeing him again. You had to pretend as if you weren’t screaming on the inside. The wedding night and honeymoon were uneventful, as you expected.

Since Newt had just finished his book about magical beasts, he was in a long process of editing and rewriting. You didn’t really know how he felt about the marriage, but you assume that he didn’t really mind whether or not you were his wife. Newt would seemingly forget about you, like when he looks up with a confused expression as you walk in the room.

Since you had no one else left to blame at that point, you began blaming Newt. Perhaps if he had declined the arranged marriage, you would never be in this mess. Also, the man was practically helpless. You were the only one that made sure that he was eating at least two meals a day. It’s a wonder how he didn’t waste away in his briefcase.

Oh, the infamous briefcase. Newt never left it anywhere since it was where all his beasts were. He offered to show you inside, but you declined politely. Your days were very lonely. Even though you didn’t really want to see him, Newt was never around. He would go to bed late and wake up after you, but every moment he was awake, he would be in his briefcase.

About three months into the marriage, Newt was coming out of his briefcase and walking to bed. When he saw you, he froze in the doorway. Newt knew you found the situation to be less than ideal, but you managed to show no real emotions to him.

You were curled in on yourself while laying on the bed. There didn’t appear to be any signs of you actually crying, yet Newt felt a surge of protectiveness. Your position reminded him of an injured Bowtruckle.

Newt decided that you needed to be alone and walked to the living room so he could sleep on the couch. In the morning, you woke up to an empty bed and the smell of breakfast in the air. Newt was in the kitchen, enchanting the kitchen ware to make them breakfast.

As your eyes met, he smiled slightly before pulling the seat back for you. You were confused of how to act. What he had done was very nice. Even so, the arranged marriage was perhaps the worst thing that could have ever happened to you. When he looked at you for some sort of sign, you only nodded half heartedly. Despite the lack of enthusiasm, Newt smiled brightly at you and began eating the food that had just levitated on the plates.

Hesitantly, you picked up your fork and tried a bit of the food he had “made”. It was very good so you tried another bite. Newt sheepishly looked at his hands clutching his napkin. He had mistaken your hesitancy for a disgust of the food. “I’m terribly sorry if it’s not very good,” he apologized, “I rarely use this spell. Well, you know that and I wanted to thank you for the meals lately with this.”

You felt embarrassed that he thought you didn’t like the food when he was just trying to thank you. “No! I mean, no. This is very good, Newt. Thank you.” The dinner was silent. Even so, Newt was smiling to himself throughout the meal.

For the next month, Newt, instead of retreating to his case for the whole day, would only spend an hour or two in there and the rest of the day with you. He couldn’t help but feel guilty for the situation you were in. Neither of you really got the choice to go through with the marriage, but your life changed drastically.

You were annoyed at Newt for the month for wanting to spend most of the day with you. It only reminded you of the marriage that made you deeply unhappy. So when Newt had to spend most of the day in his case because his book required one last full day editing, you thought it would be exactly what you needed, but you couldn’t help missing his quirky personality that you were used to. Being alone was worse than being with Newt, you decided as you walked to the case.

As you walked into the case, you worried if you were intruding. He had invited you into his case, but that was months ago. Maybe the invitation had expired. You ignored the fact and continued climbing down.

The first room was cluttered and you could the miscellaneous calls of magical beasts. You decided to find Newt so he would know that you were there. You found him hunched over a table, examining something. “Newt?” you said cautiously.

He looked up and smiled when he heard you. “Y/N,” he said with a happy tone, “What a pleasant surprise.”

“I was always curious of what this was really like,” you admitted.

“Well, I could give you a tour if you would like one.”

Shocking yourself, you felt a smile on your face. “I’d like that.” You waited, but he was almost in a trance. His eyes were wide and a small smile adorned his lips. You gestured and called, “Newt?”

He snapped out of it. “Right…right!” With that, he led you through his spectacular case full of fantastic creatures. Your life would never be like it was and you weren’t sure if it was that much of a bad thing anymore.

Your mom and dad always teased that you were destined to be a Hamilton. You always blushed at the thought of you and Philip getting married, but you had never fully tossed it aside. He was wonderful, kind, and loyal. He’d make someone very happy someday.  

You’d silently hoped that it would be you.

I stood on the other side of the bar, watching as he danced with my sister. I could see why he chose her. She’s beautiful, smart, and everything I’m not. I’m just the stupid sister with a third grade crush. But that doesn’t mean it hurts any less. They look so happy.. I just wish I was the one who made him that happy.

Love is a terrible thing. It’s even worse when it’s unrequited. You know almost every detail of this person, you know how to talk to them and how to make them feel better. Yet… no matter how hard you try they only want that other person. When I couldn’t watch anymore I quickly turned on my heel and left the building.

One nice thing - Thomas Sanders ficlet

(Okay so this is a rewrite of the last video - Personality Q&A - not that it isn’t practically perfect in every way @thatsthat24 (yes Julie Andrews is a miracle whom we all don’t deserve in our lives but are thankful for) because it is practically perfect and I saw the reverse Missy that Anxiety pulls .. it’s just my brain went on a tangent)

One nice thing. 

Prince doubted Anxiety could say a nice thing about him nor he a nice thing about Anxiety.
 It’s not that there was no good things between them but they had a way of holding it over each other enough that it wasn’t worth telling. Which honestly he enjoyed and he knew Anxiety did too. What neither enjoyed was losing. So they declined to mention anything good about the other until forced and sometimes not even then.

He told Morality he made Logic furious, Logic that he was the most realistic, told them both they were morons most of the time. Then he got to Prince and stopped.

“Princey.” He stopped and sighed. Prince awaited, unsure what he was waiting for but slightly worried about the look on Anxiety’s face, “I can’t believe I’m gonna say this. But you’re the most handsome.”

“What?” Thomas, Morality and Prince asked in shock.

Logic had been already too wound up today by Morality so the bring back of last week’s conversation and having someone say something not only illogical but to back up Prince was too much. He yelled indignantly, “What?!”

To that Anxiety smirk stretched, giving in the game to Thomas and Morality. Logic however was still in the mode of trying to process the information and Prince had let it sink in as he fist-pumped.

“Yes! I knew you knew taste. I don’t ..not like you.” Prince started then trailed off as he conceded to saying he liked Anxiety.

“I can take that,” Anxiety nodded with acceptance, then his trademark smirk came back, “Mr. Singalong.”

“I like that name but I know you’re trying to be insulting so don’t push it, Sunshine.” Prince narrowed his eyes on Anxiety.

Logic however had only just had time to work through the shock, “How do you agree? It’s impossible, we all look the same!”

“Sort of but we all look like we’re part of indentical quintuplets, there’s plenty of differences in stature, attitude, style and self-care. That makes for change in look.”

“What kind of nonsense..” Logic huffed.

Only to be interrupted by Mortality, “The boy makes a point.”

A grumble of ‘not a boy’ can be heard.

“We look different from clothes to the way we stand to our neutral expressions. I’m sure plenty of people find every one of our styles including Thomas’ own as attractive.” Mortality continued. Logic looked at him with a look of ‘why are you so smart yet so dim all the time’. Ironically it proved Morality’s point as this was usually Anxiety’s go to shock expression and yet with Logic.being different it looked a lot different on him.

This was the time Prince decided to interrupt, “I just can’t help that I’m more handsome than all of you.”

Anxiety looked like he was starting to regret that decision so instead continued to watch Logic’s meltdown to make sure it was worth it. Morality gritted through his teeth, “Anx, I can’t believe you. I hope Prince milks the compliment for all its worth.”

To this Anxiety looked shocked by Morality’s bad wishing upon him and Thomas simply laughed and agreed. Prince was still away with the fairies.

“I’m sure that’s just Anx.” Morality reassured, “I’m sure lots of people find you more attractive, Logic. I know, let people vote!”

“Morality, I don’t know if that’ll make Logic fe..” Anxiety started.

“Yeah!!” Logic yelled, Anxiety slammed his mouth shut..

Thomas looked at his phone, “I mean. We don’t have to vote. I can see who people like most. You just all may not want to know. It’s not what you think.. But it’s not what you guys seem to expect.”

“Well now we have to know.”

“Ooh, now I’m curious.”

“Hit us with it, we can take it.”

“Go on, then.”

All 4 shouted.

“Okay. But you all have to take it well. Win or lose, yeah?” All 4 nodded. Thomas sighed, “Okay, bar myself, the collective opinion of the fans thinks … Anxiety is the most attractive. By a country mile.”

Now Prince’s jaw dropped, Morality and Logic instantly turned silent and Anxiety looked as if this information was a beanie baby that hit him in the face. … Then slowly smirked.

“WHAT?!” All 3 yelled.

“Yes!” Anxiety laughed quietly.

“Yeah. A lot of the demographic are way into Anxiety. Think it’s to do with a lot of them being involved in the My Chemical Romance era, Morality is regarded as very cute. But Anxiety is the metaphorical hot girl.” Thomas shrugged.

Once again they all turned quiet, Prince slowly building up a drama queen hissy fit. Only to calm himself and finally say, “The metaphorical hot girl thinks I am the most handsome. I am okay.”

Anxiety opens his mouth to tell him he said it because he knew it would kill Logic only to get shot daggers by Thomas.

“People find me cute?” Morality squeaked.

“What do people find me?” Logic grumbled.

“Urm, at the moment a fair few people find you and your saying ‘Salutations’ sexy.” Thomas tried to read without going red. Logic finally jumped for joy. Thomas needed something to move onto to stop blushing. He loudly coughed to hide the bustle of the complimented group.

“Yes anyway, you’re all pretty. But also complete morons most of the time at least anyway.” Anxiety tried to calm them down.

“Yeah, lets open the pandora’s box of emotion later. Anyway, Logic, Spock or data?“ Thomas asked, laughing.
