2016: The Return To Anime

I used to watch a lot of anime before, but when I moved away from my friends whom were fellow fans of Japanese animation, I became really bad at taking any initiative to sit down and watch anything new. So my New Years resolution was to simply watch more anime during 2016 (for inspiration and entertainment)! ;D And in order to prove to said friends that I am indeed keeping my promise, as well as to take the opportunity to recommend good shows to others, I will be sharing my progress list and general opinions.

OBS: Some of these shows are not appropriate for an younger audience!! Before viewing, please check out  the recommended age restrictions, genre and potential trigger warnings!

END OF YEAR UPDATE: 25 shows in total! Not bad at all considering that I maybe watched 2-3 shows the year before. But I still have a lot of series that I want to see, so don´t be surprised if I make a new post for 2017. ;)

My personal top 3? I would say Death Parade, Re:Zero and Madoka Magica.

ANIME COMPLETED:

Mushishi (S1) - Not a single cliffhanger in the whole show, so it makes for  perfect bedtime stories for teens/adults. The english dub was really good and the landscape art is 10/10.

Kino No Tabi/Kino´s Journey (S1) - Do not let the simple and cute style fool you! This show contains murder, cannibalism, suicide and war!! And it asks the hard questions in life!! RUN if you do not want to contemplate the meaning of existence!!

One Punch Man (S1+3OVA) - OK, now I know why this is in 4th place on IMDB´s “Best TV-series” list. The animation is some of the best I have ever seen in an action anime! It is simply stunning to look at and it is fun ride all the way to the out of this world (literally) finale.

Sakurako-san No Ashimoto Ni Wa Shitai Ga Umatteiru/Beautiful Bones: Sakurako’s Investigation (S1) - Pretty much like an anime version of the TV-show Bones. I love mysteries where you have to follow clues in order to solve a murder so a second season is strongly desired.

Owari No Seraph/Seraph Of The End (S1+S2+10OVA) - Pretty predictable, but the the bloody fight scenes are fabulous. Needs even more angst thou (…she said even though a bunch of children are butchered in the very first episode….). >:3

Death Parade (S1) - And there is all the angst!!! Do not watch if you do not like pain in your soul!! Heart cannot be repaired!! AHRUM!! Excuse me. The show is really well written and the artists really knew how to create the perfect atmosphere to tell this dark story.

Free! (S1+S2+4OVA) - It feels like everyone and their grandmother has seen this show, so of course I fell on the bandwagon. For the first 11 episodes thou I was very neutral to it… But goddammit the first season finale had me sheering, squealing and tearing up!! (Let Rin be happy!!) Sadly only the S2 OVA had me laughing; apart from that episode, the humor was not at all up my alley.

Zankyou No Terror/Terror In Resonance (S1) - I really like the style and the smooth animation in this one. And DANG, THAT ENDING! If you like thrillers that are completely based on reality and science (like Beautiful Bones) then this could be perfect for you.

Wolf’s Rain (S1+4OVA) - I remember trying to watch this when I was like 15, but I never got past episode 3 for some reason. Which is a real shame because I think that I would really, really liked it then. Perfectly angsty and tragic for little wannabe-emo-teen-me. Do you like dark fantasies with pretty people/wolves? Then do not miss out on this one!

Mahon Shoujo Madoka Magica/Puella Magi Madoka Magica (S1+1 movie) - Oh shit. Oh holy shit. I would never have guessed that this show, this thing that looks so darn innocent and cute in design and summary, would have me in so much emotional turmoil (very much like Steven Universe in that way). But seriously; amoungst all of the animes on this list, this is in my opinion the one with the most captivating story-line, plot development and characters (I simply had to watch all 12 episodes in one sitting). Some people hate the ending, but I think it worked really well (even though all the tears could have clouded my judgement). And if you liked the show, then you MUST watch the movie Rebellion! Also: One of the the best English dubs I have ever heard in my life!! UPDATE: I have now seen everything twice… I cry every times I see Homura on screen. (O_Q)

Kuragehime/Princess Jellyfish (S1) - I watched this before when it first came out but I had a hard time remembering anything from it apart from the characters. Glad I gave it a re-watch because it´s super cute and silly; perfect for when you just want to give your feels a break from all the angst and suffering other shows come with (*stares at the one above*). I also highly recommend the live-action movie based on this! :D

Boku Dake Ga Inai Machi/Erased (S1) - This show is both intriguing and stunning! I love how modern animation uses lightning and this show is a good example of that (same goes for Death Parade). Downside: Stress, stress and even more stress!! Please, just let the small children live!!! My heart cannot take this torture!! D,,X But the stress aside, it was all worth it at the end.

Jigoku Shojo/Hell Girl (S1) - My Golb, the young girls in this look exactly like the characters I would draw at 14-16. X,D The animation is just okay, and it takes a long time before we learn anything worthwhile about the main characters. But what made me watch a whole season (26 ep) was because of the interesting stories in each episode. It was fascinating to see how little/much it was required for people to give up their souls for eternal damnation in return for the death of a person they hated.

Steins;Gate (S1+1OVA) - It took me a while to get into the story, but by the half way point, when shit got really intense, I was waaay hooked. I usually do not like stories that involve time-traveling because it makes my head hurt, but this (Like Madoka Magica) was really well written. I have very little to fault the show on ((apart from how the harassment of a trans girl is used for comedy in at least 2 episodes…)) and would recommend!

Love Live! School Idol Project (S1+S2+1 movie) - Decided to watch something really cute with sis again and this is what we ended up with. And oh darn it, it is cute alright! Everything is so sugary sweet and lovely, and good music too that you will hum on for weeks. Apart form the occasional funky looking CGI (which actually looks really good in the movie), the animation is top notch. A simple story about a bunch of girls and their lives and friendships when guys are not in the picture.

Makura No Danshi/Pillow Boys (S1) - Finally met up with my anime loving friends and this was one of the things we saw. The episodes in this are very short, all of which are about different types of guys talking to YOU before you go to sleep. It´s… different to say the least. Who was my favourites? Hmmm… I guess the guy from Ep 2, since I recall him the clearest. He also felt like someone who had known me for a while and I appreciated that. WARNING: Ep 10 did give me some extreme rapist vibes! BAD TOUCH!! (O_O)

Koutetsujou No Kabaneri/Kabaneri Of The Iron Fortress (S1) - If you like bloody action of high quality with humans fighting against superhuman enemies then this is most surely something for you. Many parallels can be pulled to Attack on Titian, but I would never call this a rip-off. All the animation is in the A+ class and there is this wonderful colouring/lighting effect they sometimes use for close ups which makes the characters look absolutely stunning. The level of details on the character designs also stuck out to me (A+ there too).

Shokugeki no Soma / Food Wars: Shokugeki no Soma (S1+S2+1OVA) - Also known as food porn. I had never heard of this until Dan and Phil mentioned it in a video and when I understood that it was about food I had to check it out. I love shows/stories that are centered around cooking (Hell´s Kitchen, Master Chef, Kitchen Princess, etc) so I really got hooked on this. Not only is the food animated beautifully, but you learn a lot at the same time. And the absurd (dirty) humor is so redicoulus that I cannot help but laugh.

Re:Zero Kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu / Re:ZERO - Starting Life in Another World (S1) - When I first saw posters for this show they never caught my interest. It looked so much like the generic fantasy harem anime that I just ignored it. But then a friend forced me to actually see it and BOY was I wrong. Let me put it this way: Imagine Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni but with a higher budget and set in a fantasy land. So if you enjoy blood, gore and mind games, check this baby out!

Ghost Hunt (S1) - I know that I had seen this anime when it was new, but apparently I never saw the final episodes of the season since I had no idea what was going to happen. But glad that I saw this again! Not the scariest or goriest show out there, but it is fun and entertaining. My favorite part is how all the characters get along even though they have different beliefs and ways of dealing with the unknown.

Psycho-Pass (S1 + S2 + 1 movie) - Everybody were recommending this show to me and I understand why. There is detective work, blood/gore, and some kick-ass action; just right for me. However, I am not into all the tech porn (you know - when the put so much time and focus on weapons and other technology when they open up, charge, fire, etc. Not my thing!), but it was still a good anime. The only downside was that I felt very little when characters died, which was strange since I usually get attached very easily and morn fictional characters on a regular basis.

Mayoiga / The Lost Village (S1) - Oh maaan. I was expecting something along the lines of Battle Royale, but this was nothing but a big disappointment. There was so much potential in the first episodes for this to become the next Another or Corpse Party, but nooo. Lack of death aside, I guess it had it´s creepy moments, but the finale was not worth the wait in my opinion. I was actually so upset by the final twist that I sat down and basically created an alternative version of the story. Same basic structure, characters, feel and pitch, but with a more classic psychological horror plot. I would also have put the focus on other characters over the two basic cardboard cutouts (I vote for Valkana and Nanko!).

Corpse Party: Tortured Souls - Bougyakusareta Tamashii No Jukyou (5OVA) - I had seen this before when it first came out, but since I am still in a Halloween mood I decided to give it a re-watch. Totally one of those shows that I cannot look away from (not only because I need the subs, but you know what I mean). Spooky details all over the place blended with intestines and body horror. I may not be a big fan of the Elfen Lied-wannabe character designs, but I would totally watch it a third time when I once again forget the ending. I was so shocked that all I could do was to stare at the screen while the credits passed by.

Mira Nikki / The Future Diary (S1) - That moment you like the premise and concept of a show, but dislike the main characters. Damn that moment. It could be that the English dub makes the protagonists seem more douchey than what they actually are in the oringal Japanese version, or it´s just that they are both written poorly (IMO). But I like the background characters and there is some genuine tension throughout the show, so I watched it all.

Yuri!!! On ICE (S1) - I had been looking forward to this since the first trailer, so it was really really hard for me to wait until all episodes had aired before I had a marathon. But gah! It was worth it! There are no cliffhangers no, but the show just makes you feel so warm and fluffy that you want to see more right away. It is a sports anime, but the characters and relationships are so well developed that I would say to give it a chance even if sports isn’t for you. You will still fall in love with everybody and you just want them all to win gold and be happy!!

PS: Oh dear brother of mine, if you are reading this, be prepared for an anime night next time we meet. You and Jorge will love this! ;D

BONUS:

Kimi No Na Wa / Your Name (movie) - Hands down one of the best MOVIES I have seen this year. Well made, a story that pulls you in, heart-wrenching and beautiful music. This is totally up there amongst Wolf Children and The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and I will definitely be showing this to all my friends, no matter if they are into anime or not.

An assortment of Brainstorms which I never liked enough to upload by themselves.

1. The second Transformers fanart I ever drew! I remember it took me approximately Forever to draw, oh man I’ve streamlined my robot-drawing process so much since I started.

2. My friend told me to draw a human Brainstorm so I Tried. Very inspired by these designs because for some reason they got stuck in my head as What Brainstorm Looks Like.

3. A Brainstorm who was supposed to go with this Perceptor until I decided I was unhappy with how I’d drawn him. Still need to draw a proper fanart for the science nerds ship at some point.

FIRST DATE!HWANG MINHYUN

How would your first date with Hwang Minhyun be like:

  • he would be a bit nervous, but will try to brush it off since he doesn’t want you to notice he is anxious about the date
  • will pick you up from your house and probably arrive a bit earlier than the hour you settled to meet
  • “have you waited for long?”
  • “no, no, I just arrived like 5 minutes ago.”
  • but in reality he came like 15 minutes ago because he didn’t wanted to be late and make a bad first impression
  • would bring you your favorite flowers and he would turn a bit shy when giving you the bouquet
  • “oh… thank you so much Minhyun, how did you know these are my favorite?”
  • “I guessed.”
  • but he spent the night before browsing your whole chat history so he could know what you like and what you didn’t
  • the first date would be very casual and relaxed
  • I feel like he would most likely take you to a small but fancy teahouse with relaxing music and aesthetic design
  • would offer to pay for everything and even if you insisted he won’t let you
  • “you can just pay for it some other time, it’s my treat now.”
  • he would probably try and get to know more about you
  • even if you two had been talking for a while before going on this date, he would still want to find more about you
  • so he would ask you about your childhood, your family, what are your future plans
  • it would be a very interesting, but comfortable first date; something that feels cozy and you both can enjoy
  • he would be the perfect gentleman
  • after you left the teahouse he may suggest going for a walk; if it were a bit cold outside he would give you his jacket without you even asking
  • I don’t think there would be much PDA, maybe some light touches on the arm or if he was feeling brave holding your hand
  • but not for long because he would be a bit shy
  • he would also offer to walk you home
  • I feel like you would just talk all the time and there would be no time for neither of you to get bored
  • when you arrive in front of your house he will start looking at the ground and smiling
  • and you would laugh because you could see him turning a bit shy and not knowing what to do or say
  • “I really enjoyed today, Minhyun. We should do it again sometimes.”
  • “yeah, I can’t wait.”
  • so you would give him his jacket back but he will refuse
  • “keep it, that way I can be sure we will meet each other again.”
  • he would probably kiss you cheek because he would be too nervous to go for your lips
  • and then just wave to you until you get inside, will probably still stay for a few minutes in front of your house just smiling to himself because he was too happy

Yoo harb what are your thoughts on Echoes?

My instinctual answer is to say “Finally, a real Fire Emblem Game again” but that might be a little harsh so let me qualify. I mean, after all, I’ve spent so much time on drawings for Awakening, and even some for Fates. I have SO MANY PAGES of art for Virion alone. Awakening probably also helped to prop me up from being crushed by depression in a sense. Seems a little cruel to chuck those games under the bus, right?

cut for spoilerssssss (mostly vague, but just in case)

The Fox’s Persona, Tamamo-no-mae

Tamamo-no-mae was one of the names taken by a fox spirit who was supposedly responsible for corrupting royalty all over eastern Asia.  Specifically, Tamamo-no-mae was the identity it took of a courtesan under Emperor Toba.  She was said to be beautiful and extremely intelligent.  But when the emperor mysteriously fell ill she was exposed as a fox in disguise and the one behind the illness and she fled.

But really, the reason I chose Tamamo-no-mae is because she was a fox interfering with human affairs, though obviously the fox in Persona 4 was a helpful figure, not a malevolent one.  Oh well.

When it came to designing this thing, though, it was a little tricky.  I mean, I had a pretty good idea right away, but I don’t have very much experience drawing foxes, and I wanted it to be recognizable as a fox, so I had to do some research and practice.  But like I said, I had one idea right away–the mask.  Typically you see people wearing fox masks (as is the case in my design for the fox’s Shadow), not foxes wearing people masks, so that felt like a fun reversal.

I don’t know how I ended up first drawing those lips but after I did along with the visor shape for eyes it kind of reminded me of a female spy from like a 60s movie or something, so that informed the rest of the design.  She also needed nine tails, of course, being a fox spirit and all, so I had to do something there, but I always seem to arrive at a design solution that’s the most difficult to draw.  Those things were a pain, I’m not going to lie.

For the fox’s weapon I had to mull on it for a while, as I definitely wanted a proper weapon and I didn’t want to just copy what Koromaru had.  Four legged creatures are obviously limited to what human weapons they can wield, so I gave the fox a kusarigama (a sickle with a chain and ball at the end).  A rather…  short kusarigama, but a kusarigama nonetheless.  I’m not entirely sure how it wields one, as real ones require two hands, but it sorta looks cool in the picture.

Here’s the fox’s Shadow for comparison.

Question: What do you like about Nahyuta Sadhmadhi?

ohhh good question!! i am so very sorry, i started actually writing about nahyuta but then i got sidetracked talking about capcom’s prosecutors and Oh God there’s so much and im really tired so it’s incoherent Anon I’m So Sorry

here’s the short answer: it’s interesting actually because i think what i like most about nahyuta is his potential! i also really love his character design like holy gods, in my view nahyuta is the most objectively attractive aa character by a long shot (objectively as in, not accounting for my personal taste). and also his voice, because i love matthew mercer too much.

here’s the less short answer:

in my personal opinion, nahyuta suffers terribly from capcom’s Prosecutor Syndrome which is a name that i just made up right now, which is basically when the prosecutor of the game is pretty much just the Big Bad Antagonist for the whole game UNTIL about halfway through the last case, at which point they become A Human Being Worth Sympathising With? and i mean this in the kindest possible way because i do in fact love all the prosecutors in ace attorney, but the way the game works does make it difficult to not feel anything except for Intense Rage for the prosecutor throughout the game. like, they are trying to get your clients sentenced, after all? and they’re all Really Obnoxious because that’s kinda just how AA works like, u have a very arrogant prosecutor who is a prodigy of some sort (i’m calling it the next rival prosecutor is gonna like, have literally been born with a law textbook in their mouth) and then phoenix’s Intense Bluffing knocks them down a few pegs and you get to watch them breakdown when you make a good point and it’s satisfying as hell ANYWAY I’M GETTING SIDETRACKED the rest is under the cut

Star Trek: DS9 Notes - S4, Vol. 3

After dabbling in double-features and recaps and whatever this was and memes (MEMES), we are back in it, back to good ol’ NOTES. Back to VOLUME is what this means, awwy yeah [greedily gathers more and more DS9 episodes into arms, snuggles them]

4x10 ‘Homefront’
- Dax: “For all we know the Bajorans are right: maybe it is a message from the Prophets.”
Dax & Sisko: [walk past a group of Bajoran priests]
  Priests, bowing: “Emissary.”
  fantastic
- um, pls tell me Jadzia really is pulling pranks on Odo with Quark?
- Odo: “It’s the fourth time she’s done it this past year. She breaks into my quarters while I’m regenerating and moves all my furniture out of alignment. Shifts one piece three centimeters to the right, the next four centimeters to the left. Not one object in my quarters is where it’s supposed to be!” THIS IS AMAZING.
- well now that Odo is talking openly about Dax’s “perverse delight” in messing with him, it does occur to me that I have not gotten to see much Dax and Garak together — Wish List
- Jadzia Dax IS the most humanoid person on this station. I could hardly tell you what that means exactly but I can vouch for its Truth.
- imagine a bomb not going off on Earth for over 100 years

I think the new merch on the website is like filler merch until they start the new era. Most of it seems to be centered around the clique more than TOP itself.

the new merch designs are interesting though because the script is very different and less simplistic? im excited to see what they have in store

The Red Bullet Concert Experience with Kaye Allen (#BTSinManila)

Fan Account 120714

7:00 P.M. MOA Arena Manila Philippines

Hello everybody! I’m back and as promised… here to tell you about what happened last night~ :>

I’m sure you guys have seen the photos from the fan sites and can you tell how fun and fantastic the concert was?! They weren’t kidding when they said that when Bangtan throws a concert—they throw a big party and this was definitely a concert which I believe to be as “money well spent”. It was more than I expected, to be honest. They gave more feels than I expected, haha.

Okay before I start, let me just tell you guys that I’m writing this at 7 AM and I just woke up. I only had more or less 4 hours of sleep because I’m still on a hangover—from the concert. Yup, I’m drunk on Bangtan so please bear with me as this account might contain a fairly good amount of spazzing. :P

Are you guys ready?

Justice League: War Review

Just finished JL: War so I wanted to share my thoughts. Which are mostly negative…

First, I’ll start by apologizing for it. I mean, the source material it’s based on is incredibly weak. I mean Justice League: Origins was just a snooze. So as far as an adaptation goes, War is miles better than Origins. I thought as an overall story, War told a much better one.

Alright, so from there, I’ll get the good elements out of the way. Uh…I liked the animation. The character designs are INFINITELY better than Flashpoint Paradox (though it would be nearly impossible to be worse). I thought the battle scenes were all very fluid and well done. The characters were a little inconsistent, sometimes they’d look really off, but I think overall the animation and character drawings were solid. The fight scenes were really cool. I appreciated those.

That’s really the only good things I had to say, so now my problems. I don’t want to rag too much on the story because like I said already, weak source material, so my main problem lies almost solely with: The characters. Oh man.

Let’s start with Superman. Awful. Superman was just a class A dick the entire movie. And he was barely in it. I would say in terms of importance to the story and screen time, Superman falls at number six. This is SUPERMAN. And he manages to be one of the least critical characters in the movie. But this is New52 Superman who is all stoic, alien, unfriendly, punch-happy, and just the worst. I just got angry everytime he was on screen because he was so bad. All he did was punch things, make doe eyes at Wonder Woman, and get kidnapped so Batman could rescue him. I’m also 90% sure he murdered Desaad and I won’t even get into how fucked up that would be. So yeah, Superman sucked.

Next, Batman. Or more accurately, Bat-God. This movie should be called Batman and Idiots: War. Seriously, the whole film felt like a big fucking jerk-off session to how much cooler, smarter, and more capable Batman is than everyone else. He’s also just a stone-cold snarky jackass. Though through sheer force of how terrible everyone else is, and how hard they tried to make sure we all knew Batman is “teh awesome,” Batman manages to be one of the positive parts of the movie. I will never understand why Batman found it necessary to reveal his secret identity to a stranger he hasn’t really been getting along with, but otherwise, Batman is one of the cooler parts of the movie.

Wonder Woman. The obnoxious, amazonian idiot. Now granted, Wonder Woman kicked the most ass in this movie. And anytime she was fighting and not speaking, she was really awesome. And I actually don’t hate her costume. It’s different, but in a way that kind of works. But wow is she annoying. I get that she’s new to American culture, but she’s basically just a completely annoying idiot about everything. Wonder Woman is supposed to be intelligent and peaceful, yet fierce. Not all “Oh what a glorious day for bloodshed.” Seriously town down the bloodlust. The thing with the guy who dresses in her costume was not as funny as it was supposed to be, and this might be a weird complaint but I’m pretty sure they white-washed the little girl with the ice cream. Also, there’s the Superman/Wonder Woman bullshit. Which I can’t think about without having an aneurysm, so that sucked too.

Green Lantern. The unrelentingly obnoxious cock. I love Hal Jordan. Johns’ run on the character is awesome and Hal is one of my favorite characters. But this movie made me genuinely despise him. He just doesn’t stop being an unrealistically awful douchebag. He flies around talking about how great he is and being rude and in everyone’s face the entire time. I hated this Hal Jordan more than I hated Ryan Reynolds’ Hal Jordan. Yeah. It’s that bad. And he’s got the second most screen time to Batman.

Flash. Zero complaints about the Flash other than he needed to be in this movie way way more. Barry was the only genuinely likable character, and the only one that I felt was true to his actual personality.

Cyborg. The robot with way too many complexes for one movie. Vic started out ok, the stuff with his dad was originally kind of interesting and heart felt, and then things got weird when he went into that robo-cocoon thing (seriously, what?). Then they added the whole layer of “I’m not human, I’m not a hero, I’m a monster” ontop of the daddy issues. He was so whiny the entire time.

Shazam. The insufferable brat. This little shit was a complete waste of airtime. His Vic Stone-fanboy thing was almost cute if it hadn’t been done so obnoxiously, and either of them were remotely likable.  And his crush on Wonder Woman had potential but it was douchier than it was endearing. If he had been all love struck instead of “yeah she digs me” (actual line guys) than yeah sure. He was just a prick for NO reason. Like he was so rude to that little girl and Freddy Freeman when they were genuinely concerned about him. Shazam shouldn’t be an angsty little brat. There was no reason to replace Aquaman.

Darkseid. Granted, the lord of Apokolips in this movie is a more compelling version than the thing they were calling Darkseid in Origins, but still he was just a big old boring obstacle. I think his dialogue consisted entirely of telling everyone he was the ultimate evil, to cheesy threats, and grunting. Anything interesting about Darkseid is completely missing. Like why is he invading earth? Just because? Not going to bother to explain anything about who Darkseid is? Kay.

So yeah, with a cast of unlikable versions of my favorite characters, and a weak plot that tried to do too many things at once, Justice League: War is a big old failure. The voice acting was also all very bad. I really didn’t like any of their voices. I wasn’t expecting the perfection from JLU, but literally everyone’s voices felt completely wrong. I’m glad I didn’t spend money on this. Hopefully JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time (which I did pay for) is good.

2/10

What’d you think?
