because i have a lot to learn about paneling and stuff

SDCC Steven Universe Panel Highlights

I thought I’d summarize some details on the San Diego Comic Con panel for anyone who wants it.

The panel at SDCC opened with a live singing of the theme song.

Zach Callison is the moderator. He introduced the guests: Michaela Dietz (Amethyst), Deedee Magno Hall (Pearl), Estelle (Garnet), AJ Michalka (Stevonnie), and of course Rebecca Sugar. He gives her congrats on the Emmy nomination (which is for “Mr. Greg” if you didn’t know). Then he asks the other cast members some questions. This is all paraphrased, not direct quoting.

Zach to Michaela: What Amethyst quotes do you use most in daily life?

Michaela says that when she wakes up, she makes noises that sound like her Gem is cracked. Then she says maybe she should change her answer to “womp womp.”

Zach breaks in with “Which way to the baby war?” as his favorite.

Zach to Deedee: What songs do you sing around the house?

She responds “Which do I NOT sing?” She likes “Love Like You” in the shower. “Steven and the Stevens” when she’s doing dishes, and “Peace and Love” a lot lately. Her kids are learning the songs on piano and ukulele, so there’s lots of SU tunes happening in her house.

Zach to Estelle: How has the popularity of the show affected your music career?

Estelle basically says a new generation of people are noticing her music and realizing she is the singer on songs they encounter in the wild. Zach says he grew up on “American Boy.” ;)

Zach to AJ: How has Stevonnie changed since their first appearance?

She says Stevonnie has learned a lot, and has more confidence now.

Then the cast does a great little line read of the scene when Stevonnie first appears, beginning with them barging in with “Pretty cool right?” The voice actors all say their parts and perform it slightly differently, which is cute. Then they do a version of “Here Comes a Thought” with Estelle and AJ!

Zach to Rebecca: What’s next on Steven Universe?

(Of course she laughs.)

Rebecca says the show has recently had so many huge events, so there will be lots of fallout, like a roller coaster from here on out. Then they show a clip. It’s sort of like a trailer. It’s all about Lapis’s conflictedness not wanting to get caught in another war, Homeworld’s future actions, Pearl being unable to properly explain the context of everything even though she wants to, and Greg not knowing his place in all this.

Zach says he hadn’t seen it yet.

Then they talk a bit about the Save the Light game coming out. A trailer for the game pops up and it includes footage that hasn’t been seen. Including a new character: Squaridot, a Peridot from Homeworld.

Rebecca was very involved in the making of the game. She says having a console game is a dream come true because they could do so much more than with the small mobile game, Attack the Light. There are Fusions and original characters, and the mechanics are relationship-based, and Greg is a player character who can play guitar. She likes that Squaridot is a Peridot who hasn’t made the kind of progress that Peridot has made. They segue to say Shelby Rabara (Peridot’s voice actor) is taking over social media for the week.

Then they talk about the Art and Origins book being out, and how there’s a SDCC-exclusive version. Launching also is the podcast, a 10-episode production, about the production of the show. McKenzie Atwood is the host. Rebecca and Steven were Episode 1–I’ve already heard this (and I seem to recall there wasn’t really a lot of new info except that the Gem writing in the Kindergarten will say who each section belongs to if you can read it, and that a lot of Ishtar imagery was used, including the 7 lions and the stars). Rebecca did episode 1 of the podcast with her brother, and says she wishes she could do everything with Steven. Zach and Grace are Episode 2.

They talk about how the soundtrack Volume 1 is out, and announce that a vinyl version is out in fall! A limited-run Stronger than You and Love Like You vinyl single is out for SDCC.

Then they play a name-the-song game with SU cosplayers. They complimented a Pearl cosplayer’s cool spear too. They read lyrics, tell what song it’s from, and if the player gets it right, they win a vinyl single. Quiz songs included “Love Like You,” “Wailing Stone,” “Let Me Drive My Van Into Your Heart,” “Steven and the Stevens,” “It’s Over, Isn’t It,” “What’s the Use of Feeling (Blue),” and “Comet.” Most people got them right, but if they got it wrong they got to try another one.

Then there’s a Q&A, which I’m paraphrasing the 12 questions:

1. Audience member: Fluorite is a polyamorous relationship, right? What inspired it?

Rebecca said she went to an LGBTQ center in Long Beach and chatted about what stuff they really wanted to see. Poly relationships came up. (So yes, that’s confirmed, though in my opinion it really didn’t have to be since they were pretty clear about it!)

2. Audience member: Fan theories–do they influence you or do you have a master plan?

Rebecca says she loves fan theories, but they work way further in the future, so no, they really don’t influence what the story does. She has loved reading the theories about the trial, because some are onto something, and some are like way off. Zach says the good stuff gets downvoted a lot.

3. Audience member: Says a favorite character of theirs is Rainbow Quartz, and wants to know will we see a version of her with Steven?

Rebecca says of course she can’t give spoilers, but that Rainbow Quartz 2.0 would inevitably be different. Then she quickly says, “Forget I said that.”

4. Audience member: How old is Lion? Have we seen all his powers?

Rebecca says it’s a good question and can’t say exactly. The episode “Buddy’s Book” gives a hint at the general time when Rose was spending time with seven lions. That’s a gauge for how old Lion is. She implies that Lion does have more to show us about what he can do.

5. Audience member: Regarding the “Off Colors” episode, which Off Color do you relate to?

Rebecca immediately says “Rhodonite, the neurotic.” Then Zach says he relates to Padparadscha because he’ll trail off in the middle of a sentence. Deedee says she relates to that too.

6. Audience member: On writing music for the show–any challenges?

Rebecca says it’s very challenging–they’re given no extra time to work on the songs. “Mr. Greg” was most challenging of course. Zach is glad the Emmys recognized Rebecca’s extra hours. He said he had a hard time when his voice changed. “Puberty is a thing,” he says, while talking about some songs he struggled with.

7. Audience member: Will there be a Blu-Ray?

Rebecca would like it. Making it happen will take more moments like this (the panel, people showing up for the show).

8. Audience member: Did Yellow Diamond shatter Pink Diamond?

Dude.

Zach: “We won’t tell anyone what you say Rebecca.”

Rebecca just says she’s really excited about the next run because it was a chance to do a real murder mystery.

9. Audience member: What inspired you to use gems/rocks?

Rebecca: “Aesthetic! It’d look cool!” But she learned a lot about myths. Smoky Quartz was fun to learn about gem trivia for, building important symbolism into their character. Estelle said gems are just really pretty, that’s enough of a reason.

10. Audience member: How often do you write a song and then build an episode around it or vice versa?

Rebecca says it depends. Character stories will need a song when dialogue just isn’t enough. “Here Comes a Thought” was unusual since it came before the episode. She wanted it to be a tool to teach kids about mindfulness meditation.

11. Audience member: Do you anticipate what’s going to be popular on your show?

Rebecca says on the inside they focus on loving what they’re making. Team ideas that are spur of the moment seem to catch on most with the fans too. They discuss Padparadscha’s immense popularity. Sapphires are sort of Zelda-like, Rebecca says, and she wanted one who reminded her of Peach. Lamar Abrams came up with the idea of making her hair kinda look like a crown to increase the feeling that she has a matching vibe.

12. Audience member: On Lars’ development: was it planned initially?

Rebecca says it happened naturally. He’s one of the oldest characters in the show, and she was drawing him in college. Lars-n-Sadie comics are older than SU. (This was already known but apparently some people didn’t know they predate the show.) So of course they were always going to be important. (Zach says Lars was important in the pilot for calling Steven names.)

Hypothetical Handplates scenario in which Sans realizes he can teach himself Common.

(Ugh, tumblr is making them blurry for some reason so I guess full-view if you want the not-blurry version??)

Convoluted explanation incoming. Handplates is an Undertale fancomic by @zarla-s and if you like Papyrus and Sans, go read it, is good stuff. So I guess this is an AU fancomic of an AU fancomic? I dunno, the idea wouldn’t leave my brain until I did something with it. So. Zarla did a Christmas doodle where Gaster gave the boys a box of ginger cookies that had the word COOKIES on the side in big letters, and because my job gives me way too much time to think about random stuff, I realized something.

In Handplates, Gaster taught the bros to read and write Wingdings but deliberately did not teach them monster Common (ie: English) so they can’t read his nametag or anything. Thing is, Wingdings is a 1:1 substitution cipher for English. Every Wingdings symbol exactly equals an English letter; it’s not a different language, just a different set of pictures. As somebody who has taught herself a fair number of substitution ciphers, there are a few things you look for when you’re trying to translate a code and you don’t have a key in front of you. Most notably, single-letter words (in English they will usually be A or I) or double letters next to each other. Like the OO in “COOKIES”.

Sans is smart. Gaster has fed them junk food before and odds are good Sans knows how to spell “COOKIES”. The word is on the box in huge letters and Gaster just said it out loud, so it is fresh in Sans’ mind. That double-O is a huge tip-off. He would put it together that the word on the front of the box matches what’s inside. Once you figure out a few of the letters, it becomes steadily easier to decode the rest.

I feel like Gaster exposes the boys to enough Common (the nametag, food wrappers, computer monitors, the books Sans sits on) that Sans could pick it up with a proper starting point. Papyrus probably not, because he had a hard enough time with Wingdings, but Sans is eager for any opportunity to undermine Gaster and I’m sure he’d jump at the chance. In this comic he elects not to tell Papyrus, though. He doesn’t know Gaster has cameras in the cell (or even what a camera is) but he’s figured out that Gaster can spy on them somehow, and the last time Gaster caught them learning something he didn’t like, Papyrus got the ever-loving hell beat out of him. So Sans keeps quiet about it for now. And thus starts the long-standing tradition of keeping important secrets from his brother.

On the technical side, it took me a freakin’ week to sketch and outline this whole thing. Coloring and shading only took me like a day. In the meantime Zarla actually kinda addressed the cookie comic, but this was almost done by then so oh well. I’m finding my poses and proportions turn out a LOT better when I’m doodling skeletons, like what, drawing basic anatomy will make you better at anatomy, you don’t say?? A lot of this was a self-challenge to see if I could imitate Zarla’s art style, and I referenced previous Handplates comics a lot for the backgrounds and Sans’ face. Full disclosure: Gaster’s pose up there is basically copied from Zarla’s original comic because I was rushing through to get on to the actual meat of the story. He’s just here for setup. I had fun trying to figure out how to do his Lost Soul head though. Also, I hate Papyrus’ face from the front. Also also, it was tricky trying to convey “mentally translating an unknown alphabet into a known one” when pretty much everyone who sees this comic is already familiar with the “unknown” one and not the “known” one, but I think I pulled it off.

TL;DR- I imitated somebody else’s style to do an AU of an AU; I am not Zarla; Zarla is the creator of Handplates and also Gaster’s pose in the first panel; I like ciphers too much and also I gave the cookies icing because that is the only kind of ginger cookie I know.

10 things for those writing about people who are blind/have low vision...

So…finishing up my portfolio and I just thought I’d share a few things:

1. Person first language: people who are blind/ people who have low vision/ people who are visually impaired. However, keep in mind not everyone likes first person language or identifies as such. It’s a lot of politics and where you’re located, and tends to be tied to professions.

2. It’s a cane… not a stick

Side note: Please have your characters be safe travelers and use canes or guides some of the time, not just super powers all of the time. It’s hard enough for some young kids to use their canes without comparing themselves to Kanan Jarrus or Daredevil…

3.You don’t get super senses… but maybe you become more aware of what you’re sensing and differentiating what you’re sensing

4. As far as I’m aware and according to people I’ve talked to…touching faces is awkward and not effective

5. People who are congenitally blind may not turn to look at who’s talking because it is a learned skill that may need to be explicitly taught to them. However, people who become blind/lose their vision later in life may still turn to face who’s talking or face things that they are focusing on regardless of whether they can see it

6. Some people turn their heads at angles or appear to be looking away from you because they only have vision in that part of their eye that’s currently facing you. They can’t see you if they look straight on.

7. When you can see, you learn things whole-to-part. You, who are sighted, see a house, you think house. Then you learn door, window, roof, chimney, shutters etc. If you can’t see, you learn part-to-whole, and you need to rely on touch/hearing/smell/taste (when appropriate) to form a concept of something you might learn like this: door, smell of home, window glass, window frame, brick of a chimney, panels on side of the house etc. But then putting in all together as a house is difficult to conceptualize if you’re going off random pieces of the puzzle. You may need a tactile model or something to fill in the gaps if it’s something you’ve never seen and can’t touch in its entirety.

8. Cane stuff: Not everyone taps their cane when they use it. Most that I’ve been with don’t or if they do, they do not use it all the time. Think about it. You miss a lot of tactile feedback and there’s a greater risk of missing things to trip on. There are three types of formal cane techniques: two-point touch (the classic tapping side to side), constant contact, and verification technique. The first two the cane is held at the center of the body and the person moves it from side to side wide enough just so that it goes past their hips. As they move it to one side, their opposite foot steps forward. This gives someone the most protection when moving. Verification technique is when the person holds the cane low in their non-dominant hand and uses constant contact as they see possible obstacles/terrain changes in their path.

9. Counting steps is a myth. People don’t take even steps generally. Sometimes it’s easy to count doors if it’s a small number. But if you’re at school and you have to travel across the building, are you really going to count 20 doors? What if you bump into something and lose count? You’d have to start all over. Most people create landmarks for locations. It could be something like the door with the only bulletin board in the hallway. Or the door with the water fountain next to it. Or the door that is one door to the left directly across  from the water fountain. Another thing here, is that you can kind of feel when you’re getting close to somewhere you’ve traveled to before. Like when you’re driving home and you feel like it’s been a while and your turn should be here, when suddenly the turn is here! That’s called time-distance estimation.

10. Most people are not totally blind. Only 2% of the population is visually impaired and only 2% of the population that is visually impaired is totally blind no light perception. This means that most people who are blind/visually impaired/have low vision can see something, and everyone is different and reacts different to their visual impairment and how they use the vision they have.

This got long and slightly ranty, which was an accident… but I hope someone finds it useful. And now that I have this off my chest, remember creative liberty is a thing :)

JACKSEPTICEYE FUNFACTFILE

all facts you see here have been seen or said in his videos. they all come from many different videos, so please don’t ask me for the source, because i won’t remember.  Also, some of these may be incorrect, dont kill me. i might update this post once in a while when i learn new things, but ah.

JACKSEPTICEYE FACTS:

  • Is only just below 5′10, making him shorter by Mark (5′9 and a half maybe?)
  • Despite being Irish, he hates getting drunk, but will drink cans or cups of beer sometimes during videos, usually the long one hour ones.
  • A while back, around the time when Jack was with his korean girlfriend, he wanted to move to Korea and be an English teacher for children.
  • He can still speak Korean.
  • Jack has a scar above his left eye where the football hit him (aka the septic eye), you can see it in his eyebrow.
  • Has a degree in hotel management, but studied sound design as well.
  • Around the age of 16-17, he went through the punk phase, meaning he got his ears pierced, listened to punk music, wore black, went to mosh pits, and even had his own band for a while.
  • Jack actually meant to get gauges a size smaller than 8mm, but the people at the piercing place told him no one was in that specialised in those piercing sizes and asked him if he wanted to a size higher (8mm) so he said “fuck it” and got them. The reason he still has the holes is because if you go 8mm and over, the holes won’t reseal.
  • Since Jack had to learn hotel management, he had to learn how to clean hotel rooms, in the correct order. (theres an order of what you have to clean first, apparently.)
  • Lost his virginity at the age of 16.
  • Has VERY dirty humor, but when getting on to the topic of sex in video games he gets very embarrassed.
  • Hasn’t smoked weed.
  • Jack was actually meant to get on Mark’s roof to do that “TOP OF THE MORNING TO YA LADDIES” in that one RYC of Mark’s, but Mark forgot about it so it never happened.
  • Played Bugsy Malone when he was younger. (just imagine bby jack trying to imitate a new yorker accent…)
  • Likes Simon Stalenhag’s artwork. (i agree, it’s really, really aesthetically pleasing.)
  • Doesn’t draw, but he owns a small drawing tablet from his Drawing Your Tweets series.
  • Despite having a fear of heights, as a child, Jack would climb up trees for HOURS, as in, he would climb up trees and then climb back down and repeat the whole process.
  • Does not like the idea of blood being taken out of his body, it creeps him out.
  • Might be allergic to cats. He says this because every time he touches a cat he starts sneezing a lot.
  • Is the youngest of five.
  • Seems to really like robots, he has said he really likes The Iron Giant or Wall-E, and gets really happy when he plays video games based on robots.
  • Really likes voice acting.
  • Had rlly chubby cheeks as a baby
  • If you look closely you can see that Jack’s mustache has a red tinge unlike his beard.
  • Use to work out A LOT but stopped not long before he started youtube, little leprachaun had GAINS
  • Wishes he could be good at acting.
  • When Jack dressed up all nice n fancy for the SXSW gaming awards, he mentioned he actually has another suit he would have used, but went with the blue one instead. The other one was grey.
  • Buys a lot of childrens toys because he generally likes them and wants to own them. Usually most of the time he’ll see a toy in a window and be like “I want that.”
  • In 2014, Jack actually had a roommate named Killian, Killian was in a few videos, including this , this , and this. Killian eventually moved out.
  • Jack was given an opportunity to be apart of Youtube Rewind of 2015, but turned it down since he had things to do and didn’t have time to fly out to America.
  • Would like his own dog to have in the apartment.
  • Jack actually doesn’t have much of an Irish accent, it’s actually very, very subtle compared to other Irish accents. Like Ross, for example.
  • Jack is actually able to get his voice incredibly deep considering his natural voice, a lot of professional voice actors aren’t able to achieve that.
  • Wishes he can start working out again so he starts getting healthy again.
  • Jack is actually, believe it or not, not a whale biologist. I’m only putting this here because i fuckING THOUGHT HE WAS FOR A WHOLE YEAR.
  • Takes his coffee black with two sugars.
  • Jack’s actual reason why he doesn’t sleep other than thats it’s only for the weak, is that he really doesn’t see the point, he thinks that the time for sleeping could be used for better things. I also remember him mentioning once that since he’s in the same timezone as felix, some times he would skype felix and just talk to him. Idk whether he still does that.
  • Has a silver tooth, whether it’s a filling or he was born w/ it, it’s there.
  • Had very dark pink hair around the same time when he started his punk phase, theres no photos of it unfortunately.
  • Jack doesn’t have his drivers license, he regrets not getting it when he had the chance because the rules in Ireland have become a lot more harder.
  • Since Jack doesn’t wear gauges anymore, instead he puts shit like clothes hangers, keychains, hand sanitizer clips, and even MORE stuff in the holes.
  • Doesn’t have proper functional sweat glands. I always wondered why he didn’t seem so sweaty in vive videos or on panels. Instead he gets a rash.
  • In a video, Ian (Idubbz) asked Jack for some pubes.. and well, Jack did.
  • Was a fan of k-pop once, but that was a while back.
  • Hasn’t gotten sick in years.
  • HATED studying in music theory when he was in college
  • When he used to live in the cabin, by his house, there lived a little shetland pony that was in a video once.
  • Favorite birthday was his 7th, he even knew the presents he got were hand-me downs but recalls it to still be the best time.
  • Sometimes, Jack gets these awkward moments where if he walks through a doorway and it feels odd he’ll have to step through it again for it to be equal, same with when he balls one fist he has to ball the other.
  • Used to cut his own hair.
  • There is a vine of him which he filmed in college.
  • Here is a video of Jack voice-acting a detective saying a ton of puns for one of Robin’s animations
  • Has an awful gag reflex. Once stuck his thumb in his mouth and gagged.

Yotsuba Koiwai - Where Did She Come From? (Updated)

Hey guys I’ve updated this so check up on the revised version at the bottom half of this post!

There’s theories that she’s from North Korea because she’s afraid of targets and whenever she hears something loud she goes ‘we’re under attack’ and everytime she sees a huge building she goes the government built it.

Koiwai found her in another country which apparently is “to the left” (Korea is to the left of Japan on most maps). Her real parents raised her to be suspicious in fear of being made political prisoners. This explains why she always asks if someone is an enemy or a friend when first meeting them.

RTX 2017 Advice/Tips!

I did one of these lil things last year so I wanted to throw another out with more fun information that I found to be helpful. It’s going to be my third year going now and I feel like every year I learn some stuff that I wanna share!

-Please respect all guardians! All the guardians are here to help you and your safety at the con!! If you have questions about something like finding panel rooms, where the bathrooms are, etc. feel free to ask because they are there to assist. Also if you are being harassed by anyone please tell the guardians because they want to make sure all attendees are having a safe time. Listen to them too!!! They know what’s up.

-Water is so important during this summer time convention!! The outside of Austin is sadly not air conditioned so it is important to carry around water with you! You can buy water at hotel stores, food shops, the convention, there’s even water fountains you can refill your water bottles at! If you got plastic bottle or you are carrying some type of water carrying thingy all is helpful. Stay hydrated please! It makes walking around less miserable too.

-There’s so many amazing places to eat (sometimes I get overwhelmed thinking about it….I wanna eat at them all….) all around the area. There’s food booths in the convention center though just to let you know they are pricey! So I recommend looking up food places around the con center to maybe try out new places. Austin has so much food to offer I feel like there’s something for everyone, pizza, barbecue, burritos, hamburgers, and loads more.  There’s also a grocery store called Royal Blue Grocery that’s about a 10 minute walk from the con center.

-So this one kind of bleeds into the one above though I think it’s a good idea to know the layout of downtown Austin. It’s not super big and not easy to get lost in, though it’s important to know how to get to places when going anywhere and getting lost sucks. Try going on Google Maps and seeing from where your hotel/airbnb/etc to get to the convention center or see what restaurants are around! That being said if it’s your 1st time in Austin or your 500th time, please walk around with at least one buddy! This is for safety reasons for anywhere you go because if something happens you will at least have one friend to be there and help.

-Signings are a ~hot topic~ of RTX with ticket codes and such.Though I think a lot of people forget you will see people on the floor on the convention and if you ask if they are free for an autograph/photo they will most likely say yes (unless they are busy you know schedules) they are happy to meet you! Sometimes you run into people multiple times like the time I ran into Matt Bragg like 5 times in the same hour. With that being said, I recommend carrying around a Sharpie because they might not have one!

-Something I learned about last year that saved my butt: PORTABLE CHARGER. I had no idea how magical those are and bought one after the convention. Invest in one, I got mine at Walgreens and it’s an iHome for like $15 and it works crazy good! Those things are the best.

-This is random one though the streets/sidewalks of Austin have like holes in them like big potholes.I and friends had tripped on them before. Just make sure you look down once in awhile before walking to avoid tripping over one. Don’t want any injuries.

-It’s a great idea to talk to people at the convention! You will be waiting in lines for panels, autograph stuff, etc. and you will be standing there with someone, who has something in common with you: Rooster Teeth! Talk to people in lines because honestly one of the most important part is the community and you are with people from all over the country and sometimes even from other countries! Talk to people in line while you wait for stuff you never know what friends you will make along the way.

-Deodorant makes you smell good!

-I know in the years past the con center has a stage with chairs and standing area (within the tape they lay out) where you can watch some of RT let’s players play video games. On the schedule they will have what time, who is playing, and what they are playing.

-When the RTX app comes out, I recommend downloading that because that has schedule info and panel info too. Also make sure to plan out what panels you really want to go to and if it’s a big one (Achievement Hunter, RWBY, On The Spot, etc.) you might want to be in the area for that panel about a hour or two earlier than it says. The rooms are so enormous though you might wanna make sure if you reaaally want to attend that panel. Also important to listen to the guardians where and how they want you to line up!!!! Also of course if any panel changes they have will be the app!

-There are places to sit in the convention center up against the walls in the back for the sides there will be little open areas to sit on the floor. I know in the past 2 years the Funhaus booth has had little cube seats and charging station which are both a plus and helpful. It’s like super bright orange you can’t miss it!

I wanna say that’s all I have for tips and advice!! If you have any questions message or ask me! Have fun at RTX and I hope to see you there!

ART SCHOOL | Q&A w/ Mark Rogers (PDX)

Known for his oil paintings of extraterrestrial beings in Western backdrops, artist Mark Rogers creates quite literally some out-of-this-world artwork. Rogers’s pioneer and alien narratives started out as writings that would later evolve into his body of work, focusing on this idea that “aliens are [the] modern folklore creatures of our current time.” We’re excited to chat with this self taught artist and talk about various topics including his paintings, his sketchbook, and his sighting of a U.F.O in 2009!

So I went to the Bob Morley panel at Ottawa Comic Con (yes I’m still screaming internally) and based on what he said I doubt Bellarke is happening this season (meaning anything romantic being confirmed). I hope I’m wrong, but I don’t think so. Bob was saying that especially after what happened in 4x11 their relationship/partnership is gonna need a lot of work to repair. And that Bellamy, in Bob’s opinion, needs the chance to find himself and develop his own strength before he can lean on someone else in a romantic sense. Bob doesn’t think it would be healthy for Bellamy to put that on someone else and hopes that Bellamy can find his own way to deal with what he’s done and who he’s become without having to lean on Clarke or have her around to be that person. And as much as I love Bellarke, I love Bellamy more, so I completely agree. Now he did joke around saying it’s hard to answer Bellarke questions cause he doesn’t want to give away too much, and when asked who he thought Bellamy had the strongest connection with/who influenced Bellamy the most Bob said Lincoln because their shared love for Octavia, but then said - Well there’s also Clarke, but kinda left it there. So that might just be Bob’s feelings, and certainly doesn’t dispel any Bellarke stuff from happening ie. love confessions or almost kisses (cause I totally want an almost kiss before anything real cause I love that slow burn) but that’s just the vibe I got.

Other things Bob said were:
- what he’s learned from/ found most inspirational about Bellamy (my question yay) is his persistence. His ability to go on even in the face of all the horrible things that have happened to him and all that he’s done. The fact that he keeps working to do what’s best for his people and to gain back Octavia’s trust is what is inspiring about him and when he (Bob) is doing tough scenes or is really tired he thinks about the fact that Bellamy probably hasn’t slept in days and thinks in comparison to that he personally doesn’t have it so bad
- His hardest goodbye on set, which took him forever to decide on, was Devon cause apparently they lived together and hang out all the time. So he said that although they’re gonna still hang out, Devon is off doing other projects so it’s going to be sad to not have him around all the time and on set
- Bob says the person that most influences his portrayal of Bellamy is his older brother. He said his brother had always taken care of his family and continues to put his loved ones first and that kind of passion is what he takes from his brother and puts into Bellamy
- Bob also said that in general the people that inspire him most of all are his family. He said specifically his brother and his mom, but in general his family. He said he never had posters of famous sports people on his wall, but apparently growing up his dad owned a gym and they had posters of Bruce Lee and Arnold Schwarzenegger up on the wall. Professionally he looks to Scorsese, Woody Allen, and some others I didn’t write down sorry!!
- The hardest part of the job he said is that everything is so high intensity all the time and so when you’ve been on set for hours and it’s 4am and you’re exhausted its hard to remember that these are life or death decisions. He said it’s difficult to demand that level of emotion all the time and for hours on end.
- he said that he would bring back Wells just to see how different their lives would be. He said it would be interesting to see how Jaha was if his son was still alive. He also said it would be an interesting dynamic if Finn was still alive as well. To see the effect on Raven and Clarke and how that would change their journey. But he specifically said Wells, and was all dramatic saying he wouldn’t even know what the show would’ve been if Wells hadn’t died.
- Bob said that if he could play any character he would be Jaha, for a while he was choosing between Murphy or Jaha but then said Isaiah and Richard portray them so well and bring so much to their roles that their performances are what make them such compelling roles that he wishes he could explore. But mostly he wants to play Jaha to get into that mindset and figure out what motivates him to be so crazy
- some one asked what kind of father Bellamy would be and how his children’s lives would be different than his life on the ark. He laughed about Bellamy being a dad in a sort of ‘oh god no’ kind of way, but then said in a sort of, pretend their living off the land out of the bunker kinda of scenario, the next generation would have more respect for the earth since humanity is what destroyed it in the first place.
- Another question was what Bellamy wanted to be when he was 5 years old, and Bob said that because he didn’t know who his father was Bellamy would have liked to have imagined his dad was someone other people looked up to. So Bellamy would have thought that he could be a leader too, like captain of guards, or whatever he wanted to be. But as he got older that dream to be whatever he wanted was crushed by the harsh class system on the ark and he settled into the realization that he wasn’t special and that he was kind of stuck in a lower class life and that’s why he was so resentful of Clarke and Wells trying to take over on the ground
- And lastly cause I can’t remember anymore right now - He said in order to take on a new character he needs to really physically get into their head space and their physical space, so he will go around and touch the walls and makes sure he feels comfortable in that place. He said he needs to find where that character’s energy sits (which makes my actor heart glow with joy omg what an *artiste*)

Sorry this turned into a really long post, but it’s only been like 12 hours since I saw him and I’m still putting all my energy into not crying every second of the day. Also just a reminder I didn’t record this, I just jotted things down, so none of this is quoted from Bob word for word. This has all been paraphrased and interpreted by me!! I didn’t change any info, or answers, just reiterating.

Can you give me some advices/tutorials on how to make gifs? I suck at it and hell, I've been trying to gif for two days and I still can't :(

Of course! Let me just say when you start off making gifs it can be very difficult and confusing (I know it was for me). So I’m going to try and give you lots of tips and things that I’ve learned so hopefully you can skip lots of the hard parts I had to learn on my own. Also don’t get discouraged if you feel like your gifs aren’t turning out amazing, you’ve just started and it’s taken me over the course of 3 years to start making ones I’m actually happy with, as always practice gives you experience! Anyways enough of my rambling lets get started.

A thing that I have noticed is that a lot of webcomic dont use the art as tool for storytelling, there's so much one can do playing with panel size, form, coloring and perspective to stablish a character or narrator mental state, the mood of the scene and the foreshadowing! I dont usually read manga, but recently I read one that hides tarot card numbers in panels and uses a lot of visual cues to enrich the story, like a particular gesture to indicate that a character is lying or nervous, (1/2)

(2/2) a checkered pattern floor to show that the protagonist is being manipulated or just a well-placed flower (flower language), I never though of this things but now it has made more conscious on how I draw comics and at the hour to read a webcomic it has made me pay attention to panels details and not just the dialogue, to really treat comics as a visual medium. Sorry for the long text and mistakes (learning english!), I just wanted to share thoughts and thank you for all your advices!

Back in ye olde days of late 90s early 2000s, basically no one in webcomics could draw.

Questionable Content, 2003

Narbonic, 2000. Narbonic got very good very fast, though.

And any comic with even a competent artist would get a lot of attention just for that.

Nowadays, actual artists realized that doing a webcomic could build a portfolio and even a brand, and the market with flooded with quality art

Ava’s Demon

Unsounded

And it became the Conventional Wisdom among us Webcomic Reviewers that art “didn’t really matter”. There were tons of beautiful comics with terrible storytelling, after all, and they were a chore

Dresden Codak. Note that the thing we’re supposed to be looking at in panel 2 is the metal ring showing that Kimiko’s arm is a prosthetic, but the camera is pointed at her boobs.

Whereas webcomics with bad art but good writing were good comics.

Dinosaur Comics sets the floor for artistic quality, but is still really liked

Some of this was a bit of jealousy, too. Most people who write reviews of comics are bad at art, and prefer to think of writing, which is the thing they do, as the Primary Driver Of Quality. Then other reason is

Understanding Comics

But the actual fact of a comic is that art is writing, and writing is art. They’re too intermixed to think of as separate skills

Dresden Codak has bad art.

Technically, it’s fine. Hell, technically it’s amazing. If I quit my job and spent 40 hours a week practicing drawing, It would take me years to get to this level. But it’s not functioning. The panels are in a confusing order, and the shot of Kimiko with her back arched way back as if she wanted to make her boobs more prominent in the shot both makes no sense for the scene (compare to the last panel, where she’s leaning forward in a way that makes more sense), and is the wrong type of shot.

The point of that panel is to draw our attention to the symbol on the back of Kimiko’s black crop top thing, but because it’s a medium shot for some reason (so Diaz can draw boobs), there are TWO symbols on her back. The one of the back of her top is center-panel, but there’s a gear symbol peaking out from beneath the top that more literally fits the description of “the one on your back”, especially since we have no reason to think that the silver symbol isn’t part of her shirt. It should’ve been a close up of the symbol! So that we knew which one it was!

Compare this page in Gunnerkrigg Court. This is technically bad art. I could possibly draw something like this in a day with my current skills. But the deterioration of the drawing quality is good art, because it gives the sense that Annie’s falling apart, which is appropriate to the scene.

Tom Siddel can draw like a motherfucker when he wants to (also this layout is excellent), but for this scene of Annie taking her makeup off, he doesn’t want to, and that’s an artistic choice. A pretty good one, actually.

Order of the Stick is one of the simplest comics out there in terms of visual style. This panel isn’t that hard to draw (compared to Unsounded, for instance). But it works.Even if you don’t know anything about OotS, this shot tells you a ton. You understand that these characters have been going through doors at random, and you know that there’s a shitload of doors. Despite it’s simple art style, this panel effectively conveys the scale of the challenge.

None of this requires gimmickry (and sometimes gimmickry is good). You don’t need to be great at drawing to make a panel like that OotS one.

And that’s just basic shot composition! There’s also stuff like the tarot card gimmick you mentioned, color palettes, and visual metaphor.

NSFW

While it’s important to remember films != comics, they can be a good resource for this kind of visual thinking. If I’m filming a scene two people talking, I can “draw” nearly as well as any director, since I have a camera on my phone. The difference between me and a great director (besides budget) is where I point the camera, and what decisions I make.

Anyway, here’s a nice set of panels from Octopus Pie, which are great at getting us into Marigold’s frame of mind in a way a good drawing wouldn’t.

DESIGN INTERLUDE FOUR (SORT OF)

K, this is gonna be the last of these little development chats.

We haven’t found a house, but not getting to work on my comic has started pissing me off, so i’m just gonna start drawing an interstitial scene I’ve been kicking around.

MEANWHILE.

The last of my little test comics. This is the one where I found the character I’d been looking for, and found out whether the Third Sword could really fight in that coat.

A lot of y’all have asked me about writing process, so I’ll show some of that. I’m a lot less confident and a lot less practiced as a writer than I am as a draftsman. So this isn’t me trying to hand down wisdom or teach anybody the craft. This is just me explaining how I go about it.

So first you get an idea. MY idea was “it’d be cool if she fought some dudes.” Just that. Nothing fancy. I thought about how to give that some structure and make it more of a free-standing scene that felt like part of a larger story. This developed into:

“it’d be cool if she was walking through some sweet ruins, got attacked, looked outnumbered but totally wailed on her attackers, then said something pithy and walked away.”

We will call that my ‘outline.’ It is nothing groundbreaking, but it’s a sequence of events, and that’s enough. I generally outline before I try to actually write anything, even a 2.5 page short. Then I wrote this really rough little script on my phone one night while I was falling asleep:

1
Clara walks through a ruined city, a place once fearsome and now chilling.

2
She hears a noise off-panel

3
Spinning, she brings up her sword to defend against a hideous creature that bears down on her.

4
She cuts it down, and another springs up.

5
More fighting.

6
Same

7
Same

8
Same

9
The creatures, all sprawled out and defeated.

D1: we well come again
D2: when you are alone
D3: in the dark
D1: and without your sword.

10
Of course you will.  You have before.

11
I survived.

12
Walks away.

I know. Pretty sparse. And I’m still calling her Clara because I haven’t come up with a name yet. But I was writing for myself, right? Plus, I always edit a few times, even as I finish lettering in the copy. This is partly because I hate everything I write, and partly because editing is just a good idea. The next day, I worked out the layout like this:

Again. I know. But I was drawing it for myself. And again, I usually change these up when I go to actually pencil in the page. You can see, also, that the dialogue here is already evolving from the script, meaning that I didn’t like it and wished it were better.

I researched the look I wanted for some more dense and ‘urban’ ruins, pulling a lot from Angor Wat and a few other Khmer temples, modifying the stuff to suit my needs. Then I drew it like this:

I drew it in photoshop. I usually do my first lettering pass while I pencil, and I did with this short. I changed a lot of the stuff that went up. Predictably, it ended up being informed by the feelings and struggles of my family at the time. This is what I ended up posting:

As a test, it was mostly successful. I liked the way her coat handled in the fight scene, liked the location, and  I got a LOT closer to the sort of personality I wanted in the character. But I skirted around a lot of design problems.

Like in that last panel, look at the bullshit way her sword connects to her belt. What is that? Who let THAT slide? Oh, it was me, exhausted from drawing a million crumbling bricks. Maybe could’ve gone easier on the environmental detail, girded that sword on, and colored her frigging belt. But no. No, instead I drew every wrinkle in that root system behind her.

So the moral of this story is: I don’t know what I’m talking about. I don’t even know how belts work. Everything I’ve said these last few weeks is suspect. Don’t do things the way I do things there has got to be a better way to do things.

So find that better way, take what you can learn from other artists’ triumphs and failures to make your own path, and have a really good time on it. And make a lot of fun comics (or whatever you like to make).

Next week I’m posting comics again.

SPN Fans? (Beware VERY VERY Long Post!)

There has only ever been a very small handful of times where I have had to make a public post to call out hypocrisy in this fandom. And now, again, this is one of those times. These past few days I have seen fans, specifically Destiel & Cockles fans, hating on both Jensen & Jared. Some of these fans reasons being valid, while other reasons are just to be malicious to these men simply for the attention of a retweet on Twitter or reblog on Tumblr.

Just to be clear before I even start to delve deep into the several topics of what I am about to discuss. Yes I am a “AA” or whatever people like to insult Jensen fans with. And yes I am a fan and appreciate Jared. And lastly, yes I do ship Wincest. I am not ashamed of it either. All this evidence is visible when you (because I know some of you will) click on my account to view my posts. I normally avoid drama because I am fan that likes to reblog or to simply make posts that support the boys and the wonderful show that is Supernatural. But I do have a decent following and amount of followers on here. And me staying quite on issues like this is almost as bad as the malicious people who attack the SPN actors out of spite.

Now to get to the matters at hand.

Jensen Ackles: I’ve seen Destiel Fans hate on Jensen because he quote on quote “doesn’t speak up enough on political issues.” And when he does he still receives mass amounts of criticism for it. An example of this is when Jensen recently made that #metoo tweet on Twitter to show support for women who have been sexually abused/assaulted/and or harassed. And when I looked at his mentions I honestly cannot even give you the exact number of how many people attacked him for showing support to women because there were so many. I could have taken screenshots & added them in this post, but I wont. That is how disgusting I found them. If anyone would like to know what I am talking about for proof all you have to do is go to Jensen’s Twitter, click on the #metoo tweet, and see for yourself.

Another thing Jensen receives hate for and fans have called him homophobic for is because he said “Destiel doesn’t exist” at a convention. I do understand if you are a hardcore Cockles or Destiel shipper and what Jensen said grated your nerves. It is a common human emotion to be upset. What is NOT okay is to tag him on Twitter calling him all sorts of derogatory hateful slurs because your feelings got hurt over a fictional ship. I’d like to point out that Jensen being called homophobic has not happened recently, but when it did happen mass amounts of people dragged him. And yes I did call Destiel a fictional ship because it is not canon. That’s not a dig at the ship or anyone who participates in that part of the fandom either. That is literally just the truth. Destiel isn’t canon the same way Wincest isn’t.

When Jensen first dismissed Destiel questions at a J2 panel, within days the top Google search when typing Jensen Ackles name in the search bar was “Jensen Ackles is homophobic.” It stayed like that to for a long time. And it is crazy that people in this fandom do not realize how fucking damaging rumors like that can be to someones career let alone how that might make them feel if they were to see what was being said about them.

Could Jensen have handled Destiel questions better? Absolutely. But the fact that fans started career damaging rumors about him out of spite of what he said is extremely harmful.

The most recent thing Jensen has been dragged for is for liking a Blue Lives Matter post. Even I am a huge fan of Jensen and even I know that shit was wrong. But instead of attempting to educate him respectfully on his ignorance, he received slurs and name calling instead.

Jared Padalecki: Recently Jared has been getting hate for calling out bad service on his social media in front of his several million followers. The first few times he did it, those could be semi excusable because everybody has their days where they’re off. I do believe fans had the right to say “man that isn’t cool, please delete this.” But instead of doing exactly that and trying to educate in a calm, cool and collected manner. The same way they should have done to Jensen when he liked that Blue Lives Matter post. Some of you do the exact opposite. You berate Jared with your words in attempt to make him feel lesser than. As if you fans not tagging him on Twitter means he won’t see the shit you say about him. It’s damn near common knowledge that most celebrities search themselves up online.

And the comments some of you say to Jared shake me to my core. When I see some of you telling Jared to kill himself, it literally hurts me which is a bit insane because these comments are not even directed at me. Fans wishing that Jared would die, makes me scared for his life. And I’m not trying to play that card of “ooooooohh poor weak Jared! He has depression! Everyone please be nice to him! Let him be, poor weak little soul! Awww!”

No, I realize Jared has made mistakes. But the way some of you go about correcting him is appalling. I am shaking as I write this because you are telling someone to die who has publicly said MULTIPLE TIMES he’s wanted to die and has been on the verge of almost killing himself, that he is basically a worthless piece of shit. Those types of comments literally make me want to cry which bothers me because I don’t consider myself a weak minded person. Not after all the obstacles I have personally went through. Jared, like Jensen, is a grown man that I’m sure can handle some criticism. But the criticism some of you show isn’t educational criticism at all it’s hate. And I have to say is that if Jared ever tried to hurt himself over something he’s read online that a supposed “fan” sent him, you will always be vile to me.

Jared’s most recent call out tweet, was that wrong? I have to say yes. And that is not hate, just truth. But clearly Jared learned his lesson seeing as he deleted the tweet within the first few minutes.

Final Thoughts: It’s very sad to me that fans, and lets be honest here, mostly Destiel and Cockles shippers with Misha in their icons are the ones that continue to attack Jared and Jensen for things that happened years ago. Could you imagine everyone bringing up your past only to throw it in your face every five seconds? Most of you are lucky stuff like that does not happen to you like it does for celebrities in general every morning they wake up. Some celebs deserve criticism while others don’t.

What’s also fascinating is that a specific group of fans continue to drag Jared for calling out bad service or defame Jensen for several different matters like dismissing the ship that is Destiel. When only a few years ago Misha Collins was making racist and disgusting slavery jokes on Twitter.

It’s jokes like the one Misha made a few years back that literally give more examples and reasons as to why informative enlightening groups like Black Lives Matter exists. It is also jokes like that being the reason why I still get the “she must be angry” simply because I am a black woman who was having a bad day and didn’t feel like smiling at any creepy ass men.

Stereotypes like the “black women are always angry” are so fucking hurtful and I can’t stand all the misogynistic and racist people out there. This fandom claims they’re so progressive but are the first ones to call a women or even some men of a certain age “old hags” or say things like “you’re too old to be in a fandom”.

As a woman of color I was extremely offended, hurt, and surprised when Misha made those borderline racist tweets. Did he apologize? Sort of. In the second screenshot above, that apology was half-assed. I still cannot for the life on me wonder why he seemed surprised that a slavery joke like that would not receive backlash just because he does a lot of great charity work. And that slavery joke that he made on Twitter is the number one reason why I can’t and will not support Misha and his endeavors. But despite the fact that I do not support Misha, you don’t see me slandering his name every five seconds either.

To be clear I don’t think Misha is a racist nor do I believe that people should loom this over his head for the rest of eternity. But I’m using this as example to show that like Misha, both Jensen and Jared have made mistakes. And to bring up their mistakes on a constant basis like Misha’s fans seem to do to Jared and Jensen whenever possible is out of decent respectful humane character.

There is one thing no one in this dysfunctional fandom can deny. And that is that all three of these men have some of the biggest hearts, when it comes to charity, in the sexist world that is Hollywood. And the fact that some fans can’t even let Jensen, Jared, or Misha do any charity work without them supposedly having some sort of hidden deceitful agenda behind their motives it is truly sickening.

Now before anyone attacks me on bringing up old news, like the racist tweets on Misha, decides to say that I just contradicted myself. Or that I am trying to bring Jensen and Jared up while tearing Misha down. That isn’t even the case. The point I was trying to make was that I or anyone else really could say and do that EXACT same thing, in regards to bringing up old mistakes, the same way some of you do to Jensen and Jared whenever you get the chance or whenever they do or say something you don’t like. Jared, Jensen, and Misha are not your puppets. They don’t jump when you say jump and they will continue to make mistakes. Which isn’t all that surprising seeing as they are human beings with emotions like everyone else.

I realize many people will not take this post and message the way it was meant to be, which is honestly to stop being so petty and let people ship what they want to ship. And let them love their faves. No, I’m sure a good amount of people will see this post as something to start up drama. But it’s fine because I would not have made this post if I couldn’t handle people not agreeing with me.

This fandom always talks about how they support women, they don’t bully, and that they support the LGBTQ community. Now lets see if I get attacked and berated for expressing my opinion.

I am going to put this post in the tags because I feel like it is extremely important. No matter your take away from my post and message I am trying to send. It is critical to realize that at the end of day, it is okay to respectfully call a celebrity out without any hidden shade and name calling. But it is not okay to tell Jared to kill himself, call Jensen homophobic or racist for liking that Blue Lives Matter post when you don’t know his stance on anything. It’s also not okay for people to tag Misha in their slander either.

It really is time for fans to start respecting Jared, Jensen, and Misha. This fandom is headed down the wrong path. And we really need to fix it before it’s too late.

anonymous asked:

i love ur blog and i also love pidge (she's literally me we're almost the exact same age i l o v e h e r )can i have some fluffy dating hc of the pidgeon

Welcome to my sin blog lol, time to balance this thing out with fluff!!!

  • The pidgeon is the most awkward girl alive my god
    • when she first saw you pidge.exe stopped working
    • she’s stuttering all over the place and keeps adjusting her glasses unnecessarily. once she missed and just smeared a finger on the glass and but was too nervous to clean them so she suffered with the smear until she was alone
    • later that night she found Lance and just went off about how cute you were and how much she wants to kiss your stupid face
      • She asked you out like three months later (she suffered every minute) by accidentally screaming, “Please date me!” when you tried to confront her about why she was constantly avoiding you and always acted like talking to you caused her physical pain.
      • you panicked and just said ok because she’s super cute and you’ve been trying to get to know her better because you have a crush on her
  • When out and about you two hold hands constantly, but she’s got sweaty hands lol
    • there’s a lot of wiping them off on her outfit because she is determined. to hold. that hand!
    • also walks super close to you, like her shoulder is always bumping into yours she’s so close
    • when you two or older she’ll shift to always keeping a hand in your back pocket or a finger hooked in it if she doesn’t have your hand
  • You two have a thing going on where one will just ramble on and on about whatever while the other nods along and offers support while not really knowing what the heck they’re talking about
    • Pidge will talk about science, the beautiful mechanics of Green and the castleship, and other neat-o things like biotechnology that sometimes are just a bit above your head. But hey! You’re a wonderful listener and keep picking up new things
      • “I just can’t figure out what’s wrong with this stupid panel! Why is it blinking!! AARRRGGghhhhh!!”
      • “Weren’t you talking about Ockham’s Razor the other day? What if you just pop the sensors out and plug them back in? Like, maybe they were just misfiring?”
      • “Y/N, you’re amazing!”
      • “Naw, I just have an amazing girlfriend who likes to talk a lot.”
      • Cue the adorable kiss
  • Pidge also does her best to learn more about your interests because she wants to know everything about you and what makes you happy because honestly? If something makes you happy then it’s worth her time to understand it.
  • Has the worst sleep schedule so be prepared to have a sleeping Pidge snuggled nice and cozy into your side during slow afternoons
    • it’s like having a small animal on your lap: you can’t move or else you have no heart. The boys will happily bring you what you need to keep you entertained while Pidge dozes.
    • sometimes you snooze with her and you usually end up on your back with Pidge on top, tucked under your chin while her arms are comfortably tucked under your shoulders. someone has put a blanket on you two
  • once a week you guys have a sleep over and it involves making an epic fort
    • it’s only once a week because any more than that and Shiro insists on ‘The Talk’ and frankly, that’s just an embarrassing thought. Like thanks for looking out for us Shiro, but please don’t.
    • you three have an agreement that should you two last long enough and decide to move your relationship to the next level, Shiro’s the first to know so he can offer advice to his smol children.
    • also he’s not allowed in the fort because he’s a lame adult. Same for Allura. Coran is allowed. Keith, Hunk, and Lance must bring sacrifices (food) for entry
  • Quick little shy pecks on the lips! Bc Pidge is an embarrassed smol bean
    • kiss her on the cheek and she turns so red
    • forehead kisses are basically ‘Good Job!’ kisses and she loves them
    • she likes to kiss your cheeks and the tip of your nose because you have a good face!
  • Punches Lance when he makes fun of you two (i.e. kissy noises when you two walk by)
    • she must defend your honor
  • On your birthday she has Hunk help her make a cake for you but she has to do it all herself
  • space rides! for when the castle seems too boring and stuffy and you two just want to escape
    • you get a chance to pilot Green and you’re surprised about how she seems to move more with your thoughts than with the controls
    • Pidge is super proud of you and insists you join Paladin training because she’s pretty sure you’re her second
  • Protecting each other during combat
    • Pidge is a bad-ass on her own but with you mixed in you two are a tiny unstoppable force of pure evil team work
    • also enemies underestimate you two and you use it to your advantage
  • Sometimes Pidge gets a little snappy and self-absorbed when she’s working on a project and lashes out with unkind words when you bother her too much
    • she’s fairly selfish but she knows this and being with you makes her want to work on it.
    • she apologizes after she’s finished and taken a nap and will give you the space you need if you’re still mad at her.
  • You two do get in small little fights but they’re rarely anything serious. You’re both young teens fighting in an intergalactic war. Sometimes things are tense and it’s easy to take things out on each other
    • you always make up and just cuddle each other after
  • You two try to adopt any small creatures you come across
    • “Pidge, Y/N, what. Is that?” Shiro drags his hand across his face, hiding a very, very pained look.
    • “What does it look like Shiro? It’s a dog.” You shrug.
    • “Dogs don’t have three inch spikes down their spines.”
    • “Don’t talk about Skittles like that!” Pidge whispers, covering ‘Skittle’s’ ears, “He’s very sensitive about them.”
    • “No. Just, no. Put it back.”
  • You are the only one Pidge truly vents to
    • you know about how terrified she is of not being able to find her dad and Matt
    • you know how she is ready for this war to be over because if it keeps on for too long, statistically? she’s pretty sure she’s going to die. or you will. and she’s not too sure how to handle that.
    • you know that even though she acts like Lance is a big pain in her ass she loves him like a brother. Hunk, Keith, and Shiro too. They’re her brothers. Coran is her weird space uncle and Allura her weird space sister. she loves her weird space family
    • you’re the only person who knows how concerned she is for her mom and dog back on Earth
  • When you vent, Pidge tucks you under her arm and brushes a hand through your hair
  • Sometimes you guys color coordinate outfits
  • definitely have matching bracelets that you made for each other
  • making faces at each other from across a room while trying to avoid being caught
  • turns out if you wear Pidge’s glasses you can see everything in the distance super clear (she’s near-sighted) so sometimes you wear them when practicing with a long distance weapon
    • Pidge’s poor heart
  • Sharing clothes? Big yes
  • Canonically, Pidge is a hoarder so every once in a while you make her toss out a box of stuff because seriously, her room is a fire hazard. how does she live in it?
  • If anyone insults you, they’re in a world of hurt. No one insults Pidge’s boo.
  • Probably not into cutesy nicknames but if you giver her one she’ll nearly die in embarrassment but she’s so touched
    • however she will find you and be like, “Hey, you cute loser, what are you up to?” and I’m not sure that counts as a pet-name but alright?
Theory: Frank Miller's recent work is good, but it isn't getting the right colour treatment

Above: I recoloured that recent Wonder Woman cover Frank Miller did for DC last week. Mine on the left, the published version on the right. I did this to demonstrate a theory I have that despite the general critical consensus, there’s actually nothing wrong with Frank Miller’s recent art- it’s just that it isn’t getting the appropriate colour treatment.

So- I’m a cartoonist who mostly writes and draws his own material, but in January of this year I tried out to be a colourist for Frank Miller at DC. Not because being a colourist for the comics has always been my dream, but because I kept seeing some pretty awesome drawings of his being critically savaged. People were talking as if his recent drawings were the scrawlings of a lunatic. I felt like I knew why this was, and how to fix it.

I should add a disclaimer- this post isn’t a criticism of DC or the colourist who currently works on Frank’s art, who I’ve talked to, and who I learned was selected by Frank himself. The colourist who did the original work on the pieces I’m about to show you is an extremely technically accomplished person who does things I could never do. I’ve tried colouring like this guy does. It’s pretty hard!

Nor is this intended as a lionisation of my own abilities. Instead, this is a personal argument championing one type of colouring over another, and a defence of Frank’s recent work.

Below is one of the Miller covers I recoloured for DC. My colours on the top, and the published original on the bottom. Here you can see the discrepancy between the potential I saw in these drawings, and what was actually being published.

I spoke to a couple of editors at DC and the consensus seemed to be that they loved what he was turning in. So why did every blog I read think it was the worst work he’d ever done? I believed I had the answer: that the colour treatment DC’s artists were giving to his art was, while technically accomplished, not flattering to the type of work he was doing.

My friend Julian Dassai said it best: “His work is dynamic and, in some cases, verging on abstract. Trying to color his stuff with representational lighting and rendering is pointless, whereas a flat, graphic approach (or just leaving it in b&w) allows the energy to jump off the page.”

My colour job, followed by what DC actually published:

Frank is an artist who is constantly evolving, and his new work seems to be somewhere between Jim Mahfood, Sergio Aragonez and Ralph Steadman. It doesn’t make sense to colour him as if he’s an Image comics artist from the 90’s, all gradients, shadows and shiny metallic finish.

Here’s another one. Again: my work on the top, The published version on the bottom.

All these images I’ve posted so far have two things in common- they were all widely dunked on and derided when they first went online, and they all prompted responses of “WHOA, COOL!” and “I LOVE THIS!” after I recoloured them and circulated them amongst my friends. So what happened here is ol’ Frank became the butt of everyone’s joke when actually, there was nothing wrong with his drawings.

So how did this happen?

Well, check out Frank’s work in the Sin City comics. When Frank works in black and white, he’s a one-man band. But when he works in colour, he hangs back and gives the colourist a lot of space. He knows that colours and inks are two halves of a whole.

Above is a page from 1986’s The Dark Knight Returns. You can see just how much trust Frank placed in his colourist, Lynn Varley, to finish his work. As you can see, some of those panels aren’t even THERE in the original inks. Panel 6 is just an empty box.

This approach has been proven to work very well, but the problem is it places the burden of the image’s success or failure squarely on the colourist’s shoulders. And if the colourist and Frank aren’t on the same page, we end up with covers that are the laughing stock of the whole internet.

It’s funny- even Lynn Varley could screw up colouring for Frank. Two years after their critically acclaimed work 300, they made their most widely panned book of all.

Lynn’s computer colouring on Dark Knight Strikes Again has all the invention and nuance of her colouring on Frank’s earlier work. However, to my eyes, her experimental digital art just isn’t a good fit for Frank’s traditional, brusque inkwork. The artwork in the book suffered a generally poor reception from fans and critics alike.

I took a pass at colouring DK2, too. I include this not to throw shade on Lynn’s work, which has definite and strong merits of its own. Nor do I want to suggest that I’m a better colourist than Lynn (I’m definitely not). Rather, I just want to use a flat colouring approach to demonstrate that there’s nothing wrong with Frank’s pencils and inks in even the book that was generally regarded to be his worst. His lines have character and energy and do everything they need to do to tell the story, and with the right treatment would have looked pretty great.

We can apply the same lessons to Frank’s most recent work. I’d read a whole comic that looked like either of the recoloured images below.

DC liked my stuff, but they’re happy with the guy they already have colouring Frank’s work, and so my experiment has to run its course. Still, I want to believe that there’s something in here that we can all learn from.

It’s important to pick the right team, and to utilise a stylistic approach that’s harmonious with what the rest of the group are doing. If you don’t, you might just end up with something no-one likes even though you worked your butt off. As we’ve seen, it can even happen to an exceptional talent like Frank. That’s a scary thought.

Update: see more of my recolours here.

Why I love Tenya Iida (and you should too!)

Alright so I know that all I’ve been actually posting on this account are just Kacchako related stuff but let’s be real, my username is iidas-trashcan and well, Tumblr isn’t doing a good job of representing him. If you look up most character tags, there are many, many solo pictures of the other characters but with Iida, most images or edits include him in group environments but he doesn’t have much solo images and that honestly upsets me. Iida is a character that is shown to have a lot of thought really put into him and he is the embodiment of what you look for in a friend or even a leader so it really does really make me sad when no one has as much love for him like people have for the other characters.

I mean to start off, this guy is the biggest dork in the entire series and I mean this with a fiery passion. I mean look at the way he talks to Bakugou on the first day of class:

To how he is trying to figure out how to embody the villain role during the class training

To at the sports festival when fighting with Mei

To even this adorable panel that he is notorious for

Of course I’m missing tons of moments since I’ve only done a read through of the manga once, but most definitely throughout the manga, there are little panels here and there that really amplify the fun and funny part of his character that comes with his serious personality. I even made a post about how cute Iida was being during Chapter 101 that also gives a pretty good idea on how cute he can be.

But, of course, being dorky isn’t the only thing to look at when looking at a character because, let’s face it, other characters like Denki and Kirishima have their characters based on that so Iida has to have that extra element added to him to make him different from the others. And what better way to achieve that than to make him not only a wonderful leader for the class but one of the most selfless and humble characters in the entire manga.

I mean one of the first scenes we get from him is when he chastises Deku for almost messing up Ochako’s groove during the entrance exam

Then we have him telling Deku as to why he voted for him for Class President when he could have easily voted for himself since he wanted the position so bad and leads him to finally reveal his family that he slightly wanted to keep under wraps

And then, shortly after that, even though he isn’t class president or doesn’t have any type of leadership position, he takes it upon himself to find a way to calm the frantic students at UA

During the rescue training, we then see him slightly arguing with his classmates in regards to leaving them alone to deal with villains while going to get help

And even when he knew he was going to get a medal at the Sports Festival (which there could have been higher benefits for him if he decided to stay), he left immediately so he could be there for his family and his severely injured brother

WHICH leads me to internal struggles Iida went through afterwards after discovering that the Hero Killer pretty much wrecked his brother, or the arc that changed Iida as a character for most readers.

See, for me personally, this arc really showed a lot about Iida’s character that was masked before. True, we knew he cared about his brother immensely and we already established that he’s a humble and selfless man but did we know that he’s someone capable of pursuing revenge for his loved ones or someone that would keep his own feelings under wrap and handle the situation all of it himself? Probably not, especially since he is seen as a virtuous and noble character yet I loved this arc because it completely dismantled that image of Iida and pushed him to grow that you can see later on (which I’ll talk about that in a little bit).

I mean, for starters, because he feels this is an issue that doesn’t involve others and something only he can do, he keeps his feelings super hidden from individuals he considers to be his closest friends, which is unusual for his character to begin with since he’s pretty open with talking about his feelings  and concerns he has.

He then uses and actually manipulates a pro hero to be able to get close to the Hero Killer, again completely opposite of his virtuous self that he has been portraying all throughout the manga

And when Deku and Todoroki comes in, you can actually see the anguish in his face as people are getting involved and hurt because of his actions

And of course, with the power of teamwork and all that hoo-hah, he grows from this experience and learns that the behaviors he was inhibiting prevented him from acting like a leader and now has a firsthand experience of going down the wrong path and hurting individuals around by keeping secrets away.

Now, of course, if this was it, well then I might as well change my url to ochakos-trashcan because most Shounen heroes go through that change at some point. It’s not a bad thing usually but it’s too common to really commemorate a character based solely on that.

Of course, I think Horikoshi caught the “good writing” bug early on because he certainly doesn’t let this growth that Iida got back then go to waste.

To be truthful, I’m absolutely positive there were moments during the actual end of term exam and the training grounds that will prove this point as well but again, I’ve only done one read through of the manga so far so certain details will go past me. I apologize for that.

The scene that I’m going to bring up is the famous “Iida screams and slaps Deku” moment because OH BOY, not only does that show his growth but really builds the picture and insight of Iida’s character that may not have been there before.

I mean, look at the way he confronts Deku over here,

This is just SO FREAKIN POWERFUL, especially in the context of Iida. I can see how some people might see it him taking it too far, especially with his reaction in the end, but, honestly he is seeing Deku going to through the exact same anguish and guilt and pressure that he went through with his brother and knows how it feels to go through that alone. True Deku had the others with him but it doesn’t change any personal inner feelings Deku has towards the situation and Iida knows that. Iida knows how it feels to have people around you supporting you but internally not accepting that. He’s screaming at Deku because he cares and loves Deku and doesn’t want him to go down the same dark path he was going down with his anguish. It’s so tragic and beautiful and he even proves more on how he’s a leader and how he cares about everyone when he goes on the mission with them, knowing full well of all the consequences that occur from that but it’s the drive and passion to not leave anyone behind and feel the same as he did that truly proves he’s meant to be a hero and a leader when he’s willing to himself in that position for another classmate.

Alright so I know I got redundant here and kind of said the same things like multiple times but I honestly can’t help it. Even though the manga has just reached a little over 100 chapters, characters like Iida have already gone through so much development and he has shown time and time again how he is more than the virtuous stereotype that embodies his character and I absolutely adore that in a character. However, it upsets me significantly to see people not appreciating Iida as much as the other characters because he deserves as much love as other characters. I don’t know if it’s because he’s not as attractive as other characters (which yooo he a bishie in his own rectangle way mmmhhmhmm) or maybe because his strict behavior gets on people’s nerves, I’m not sure but after Iida has shown us and gone through, it’s really hard not to make him my favorite male character in the series and not admire the writing Horikoshi put into his character. I truly hope one day people will see him in a better light and appreciate his amazingness as much as other characters.

I summed up the most interesting things Adam said during this interview.

SVTFOE PART

During his first auditions for the role Daron was impressed by how good Adam was at making “fighting sounds”. He thanked his years of martial arts for that.

- When Adam had to come up with a voice for Marco, having seen his pictures, he thought that he looked like a “kid with a sweet demeanor who sort of wants to be a bad boy”, and he essentially used what’s his normal voice, with a higher pitch.

- Adam sometimes feels like he’s reliving his teenage years by voicing Marco, and said that when he read the script for Sleepover he was shocked to see the piano scene, since he essentially did the same to impress the girls over at his house for his sister’s sleepovers.

An In-Depth Explanation + Discussion of Morty Smith’s (Rick and Morty) Canon “Disability” - ADHD and Autism

In the popular Adult Swim cartoon, Rick and Morty, it is clearly and distinctly said that Morty Smith, the second half of the show’s two main characters, has a (context: learning) disability!

I ended up making a GIFset of evidence from throughout the shows current two season run supporting this statement, and bringing forth the speculation that said disability(s) is both ADHD and Autism!

I’ve gotten many question, comments, and criticism in the short time that the post has been up and have decided to answer them all here!

I’ll be explaining my post in-depth, GIF by GIF, with the episodes and context included, as well as citations to relevant articles/etc. to back them up/explain the symptoms (as well as ones not shown in the original post).

It is rather long, so using “Ctrl + F” (Windows) or “Command + F” (Mac) to find the specific symptom/explanation you’re looking for is advised!

Explanation is under the cut!

RWBY V5 Twitch Stream Recap

Q: What does it feel like going to conventions like this?

Gray: Dreamlike, surreal, gets awesome-r every time.
Kerry: Honored and overwhelmed.
Gray: Shout out to the cosplayers!

Q: What is it about RWBY that strikes so many people?

Miles: Monty’s fight animations, the character designs; RT’s goal is to make shows that people want to watch.
Kerry: A lot of the RvB audience started the push for RWBY.
Barb: The characters are so dynamic and so well written than people can identify with them.
Gray: You get charmed by the characters. Even working on the show, I love watching it. There’s so much heart in it.

Q: How does the tight-knit crew impact the show?

Gray: Lots of Nerf gun fights.
Miles: CRWBY started out as a family, and made a show as one. That’s why it seems like we’re having so much fun - we are.
Kerry: Everything we do is this family situation. That’s how we are naturally.

Q: Now that all that’s out of the way… Volume 5? What can we expect?

Miles: Volume 5 is about picking yourself back up, getting stronger and getting back out there. Two more episodes than we normally do!

Gray plugs for Twitch marathon stream (What’s Ra-wuh-bee?)

Q: Any teases for V5? Anything you can tell us?

Barb: Yang’s gonna be in it…
Kerry: The finale’s gonna be dope.
Miles: I’m excited for the birds. That’s not a joke… (Excited transcriber squeal: Oooh, maybe he means avian Faunus? Or Raven’s tribe?)
Kerry: Oscar’s stuff. It’s exciting. He’s slowly becoming one of my favorites.
Gray: V4 was about recovery from loss, Volume 5 speaks pretty strongly to what to do after you find inner strength.
Kerry: Some people aren’t 100% recovered yet, but they’ll have to be…

Kerry used to have a Nerf pistol taped under his desk, because Monty would start a fight at 3am.

Q: What’s it like in the booth?

Barb: These guys are great at acting out the other characters. Like, Miles doing his Weiss or Kerry doing his Ruby.

Miles does his sassy-Cinder voice.

Q: What have fans said to you that really resonates with you?

Miles: It was actually this weekend - a little girl came up to us dressed as Ruby and told us Ruby was her hero.
Kerry: People telling us that we motivated them to get into their career path.
Gray: Everything they said, and all the different forms of positivity that come up when talking with the community.
Barb: Every convention, people come up and talk about how important RWBY is to them. We always say that the strength comes from within you guys. It’s all about the fans. We’re honoured, but you guys are awesome.

Q: What is it about RWBY that separates it from everything else in the genre?

Miles: Dog butts.
Kerry: We’re all big anime fans. This is what we’ve wanted to do since we were kids. We’re not caught in the Hollywood wheel of things, and we’re able to do things the way we want them. We can put a bit more heart into it.

Q: Is there anything you think you’ve been able to do that you wouldn’t have been able to in Hollywood?

Barb: Day 5 scene, blocking off a street in Austin. If we had done it anywhere else, we either wouldn’t have been able to, or it would’ve been thousands of dollars.
Miles: It [RWBY] probably wouldn’t have existed if we were in Hollywood.

Q: What advice would you give to someone wanting to do what you do?

Gray: Get started. Once you get started, finish it. And then do the next one, and raise the bar a bit. Get your stuff out there. Don’t get discouraged.
Kerry: Don’t give up. Finish your stuff, get it out there. Be reflective afterward, and do better next time.
Barb: Don’t get discouraged if your stuff isn’t the best thing in the world. Just doing it is the first step.

Q: Any directions you wish you’d gone with characters? Shipping is big with RWBY, so; any ships?

Miles: Nuts ‘n’ Dolts! They’re super adorkable.
Kerry: Seamonkeys. It’s super adorable.
Gray: Chainsaw Lieutenant and the guy with the glasses.
Barb: Bumblebee.
Miles: It’s always incredible how intense people get. Ship wars!
Barb: I just want Yang to keep doing good stuff and be a good person.
Kerry: Looking forward to when Team RWBY get back together.
Miles: Jaune and Blake both blame themselves for a lot, but… people make mistakes. Everything’ll be okay - don’t be so hard on yourselves.
Gray: Seeing Ruby become a better and more competent fighter. Can’t wait to see her journey and who she becomes.
Kerry: There’s a definite end to this story; I’d say 10-12 seasons of this show. We’ll continue to tell stories in the world of Remnant as long as people continue to watch/listen/read.

Q: Anything you feel inspired to do after RWBY?

Barb: More confidence as a voice actor, and acting in general. I would’ve never had that confidence if not for RWBY.
Gray: Gen:Lock. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without community support and learning from RWBY.
Kerry: Whenever my time is done with RWBY, I’m looking forward to getting to do another project.
Miles: Confidence through voice acting Jaune.

Q: You mentioned a new show. Can you tell us anything about that?

Gray: [Talking about Gen:Lock] The audience at the panel on Friday were the first to be introduced to Julian Chase, a new character born and raised in New York. It’s a little bit more grounded than RWBY; little bit more sci-fi. It’s gonna be set here on Earth in a sort of near-future, lots of conflict and factions involved.

Kerry’ll try to be in the Twitch stream, especially on the last day. Miles might jump in and out.

To the fans:
Thank you! We love you! You’re the best!
