The dub of episode 12 was wonderful, but one line really stood out to me, as a summary of the unique format of the Yuri on Ice story and how it plays with the usual happy ending cliches. (It was in the sub as well, and it caught my eye there as well but something about hearing it made it a lot more interesting.)
“No tale is more compelling, than one that never ends.”
In context, it’s about JJ and Seung Gil Lee, two skaters who are in the prime of their career and whose subtle interactions with each other will continue long past the Grand Prix Final. After all, the Grand Prix is just the start of the skating season. There is so much left to do, and so many stories to be told on the sidelines of the greater Victor/Yuri arc.
And the thing about skating is that it never stops. Individual skaters work through their careers, but then they coach or choreograph or inspire other younger skaters, who step into their places and continue refining the art. It’s a neverending story, one that only gets greater over time. There’s so much love for the immortality of the ice- the infinite and eternal possibility of greater things in the future- in the writing. No ends, no neatly tied up resolutions. Everything keeps going, and that perpetual motion is beautiful.
Look at the story we get told with Yuri on Ice. It starts with two skaters in a standstill, trying to figure out how to move forward with their lives. Their victory is not winning a gold medal or getting married and having babies, it’s continuing with their careers, continuing to contribute to the eternal story. They don’t get to settle down, they get to be immortal.
Even if we get a season two, I don’t think we’ll ever get a cut and dried ending, where everyone waltzes into the sunset. That would be a betrayal of the story they’re trying to tell. It isn’t about finding happiness, it’s about progress, about inspiring each other to be better skaters and attaining happiness in the process.
Maybe one of the main characters will retire, but certainly not permanently. There will always be the next generation in the wings to be tutored, a surprise comeback to be made. One more competition, one more year, one more medal or routine, all the way into forever.
Not only is that sort of open ended storytelling uniquely poignant, it’s also perfect for a show that endeavors not just to tell a love story but to tell the story of an entire sport. Nothing ever stops, there is no final goal to reach, only an ever evolving conglomerate of beauty that every athlete contributes to. A happy ending for Yuri on Ice is an anti-ending, one forever that promises a more glorious future just around the corner.
“It’s worth it anyway,” says Harry, looking into Louis’s eyes. He’s untucked his hair from behind his ear, and it falls down in silky strands to obscure his face. He looks so painfully young, even after everything. Louis’s strong, strong boy. “Just for the two of us. We get to be selfish for a little while.”
it’s christmas. in between snowman building, tree shopping, and ill-advised skating on a frozen lake, louis and harry get ready to take the most important step of their lives.
au where james and lily lived and harry comes home for christmas all upset because snape keeps saying how arrogant james was and he tells everyone this over christmas dinner and lily, remus, and sirius just burst out laughing and james gets kind of embarrassed like, “i may have been a bit, well, cocky when I was younger…”
and lily’s just like, “a bit?”
and sirius starts doing impressions of teenage james, ruffling his hair and asking lily out.
and this leads to the three of them recounting all of the ridiculous things james ever said or did at school, while he just leans his head against the table, hiding his face and muttering about how much he hates them, but really he’s laughing too.
and lily reaches over and messes up his hair and the way she smiles at him, harry never has to doubt for a second that his parents love each other.
Everyone keeps saying that Whitley acts like Azula because of this and that…but does no one remember Satsuki Kiryuin from Kill La Kill? Like, this chick straight up murdered people just to make her mother think that she was obedient. She had her plan to betray her mom thought out since she was a kid. She seemed like a bad guy to start with, but really she just wanted to get back at her mother for years of abuse.
As all of you said before this recent episode, Whitley is deceiving, I wouldn’t be surprised if this was the route his character takes. He could be planning something against his father, and getting Weiss’s title taken away was a crucial part of the plan.
ok one thing that really pisses me off about snowbarry shippers is
how they say that westallen shippers blame everything on racism and how
adamant they are to say that not all of them are racist. because liSTEN
i’m white and i can still see that this is kind of like the ‘not all
bc i’m pretty sure everyone knows that not EVERY
SINGLE snowbarry shipper is racist (i actually follow one that’s super
nice and loves iris and everything) but the thing is that there are
ENOUGH racist shippers for it to be such a big problem.
time i see ‘i ship snowbarry but i’m not racist and all westallen fans
are stupid and annoying for saying so!!’ i see this:
‘i fail to
acknowledge the fact that snowbarry was built upon racism from before
the show even began, back when we knew nothing about the characters but
iris and candice immediately got hate and racial slurs thrown at them
while people jumped on board with shipping the predictable heterosexual
white couple instead. ALSO i don’t understand that because racism is
such a big problem in this fandom, generalisations of snowbarry shippers
aren’t always supposed to be taken literally since every person is
different and there are some poc who are proud of their race that ship
snowbarry too, so naturally racism wouldn’t apply to them. AND because i
find it so unfair that people generalise all snowbarry shippers, i fail
to see the hypocrisy in us doing the exact same thing whenever one
westallen shipper steps out of line.’
(i also don’t know why there are more people shipping caitlin with barry than with cisco…………wait. actually i do. never mind :))
I honestly felt terrible for Maya after Lucas won the bull-riding contest thing bc tbh she was totally right in saying that he shouldn’t risk his safety and do smth so dangerous. And she was so worried he would get hurt and told him she wouldn’t speak to him again - but he completely didn’t care and it made her look silly, like she didn’t matter at all to him.
Plus he aced the contest and it put her in a bad light; like she nearly cost him his win and got in the way of him making his family proud. And Riley encouraging lucas to risk getting thrown off a bull just to prove a point suddenly became this huge favour to him - but the fact is he didn’t want to ride the stupid thing. He was scared but did it because he didn’t want to let everyone down. When he keeps on saying how he owes his moment of glory in Texas to Riley, I feel like kicking him bc how does that sound to maya?
She had his best interests at heart and it just sounds as if she’s the one who nearly brought him down and ruined everything for him. It’s annoying.
I made this because everyone (that I know anyway) keeps saying that Steve would be a dog person and Tony would be a cat person….uhm…I don’t know about you guys….but have you EVER BEEN AROUND A CAT WHILE TRYING TO DO ANYTHING?! IT’S COMPLETELY COUNTER PRODUCTIVE!!!! ( i know from experience xP) But yeah….I hope you all enjoy this little doodle that I made. xD
About the trans Lars thing going around, I didn’t want to do this because I think trans head canons are cool and are really nice for both trans and cis people but guys it’s not true. Maybe the mtf theory I read forever ago but there’s an episode where Lars takes his shirt off guys (Lars and the Cool Kids, that episode everyone keeps using saying Steven touched Lars’ chest because he knows he wears a binder?). I don’t want to burst people’s bubbles but are we watching the same show?
au in which a girl band poses naked for a magazine, with their lyrics written on them. the reactions from the public are instant: “wow, they’re such whores, i can’t believe they would do that just for attention!!”
when you open the magazine, you can read about various topics- the dominant one is them having sex. “it’s obvious that those sluts are totally talentless, and that they’re only famous because they sleep around.” says everyone.
when you keep reading, various topics seem to appear: they objectify and discredit their male fans who are just obsessed with them, keep talking about their sex and party life and boyfriend’s trust fund.. where is the music?
at one point they get serious and talk about one of the member’s mental health: “they’re just drama queens!!!”
the public gets mad, it blows up. in one day their career is over.
