Give Your Self A  Makeover

 Finding Your New Look

  • Assess what you want or think needs to change
  • Research different looks you would like to recreate/try
  • Ask someone you really trust for honest feedback on what you plan to do
  • Remember, not everyone is gonna agree with your change, but if they really care about you they’ll come around

Hair

  • Keep your facial shape in consideration when look for a new hairstyle
  • Show don’t tell - always go to the hairdresser with photos of what style you’re going for.
  • Don’t be afraid to ask your hairdresser for suggestions. (Hopefully) they know what’s best.
  • Try hair extensions if you just want to go longer in an instant or a wig if you’re not ready for commitment
  • Consider color. It can be a bold color, the tips of you hair, highlights, low lights, or a shade or two lighter
  • Curl or straighten your hair. That may be all you need to change your look.

Clothes

  • Purge your closest and have no mercy.
    • Model what’s in your closet and have friends help you decide what you should and shouldn’t keep
  • Shop at new places
  • Challenge yourself to go a week without wearing jeans.
  • Get fitted for a bra to make sure you’re wearing the correct size (they’re normally free)
  • Go shopping with friends. Often times we shop in our comfort zone but our friends may have a better idea of what ‘daring’ pieces might look good on us and what might not.
  • Choose a style icon who inspires you to go after the look you want.
  • Use sites like pinterest or polyvore for inspiration or to put together/get a feel for how some outfits may look
  • Reorganize your closet so it’s easier to navigate

Accessories

  • If you wear glasses the next time you’re getting a new pair try different frames
  • Accessorize with scarves
  • Wear jewelry that looks best with your skin’s undertones- silver looks best on cool undertones while gold looks best on warm undertones
  • Play around with hats. Beanies, fedoras, sun hats you name it

Makeup/Beauty

  • Revamp your skin care routine
  • Trim and/or polish your nails
  • Get your eyebrows done professionally or at home if you can
  • Get a makeover at a department store (most likely won’t be free)
  • Don’t go overboard with daily makeup. Sometimes less is more.
  • Try out different make up looks in your free time. Practice makes perfect.

I'm suddenly standing at the beginning with you

For @nerdyadventures Happy birthday my friend, I’m 10 days late and I made you beta this but this is for you and for keeping up with my texts all the time and humoring me and texting me back. You’re wonderful and I can’t it to be January so we can hang out in Disneyland.

This is the start of a hopefully 3 part story. I hope you guys like it.

Piper was applying lipstick to her lips while Sally and Hazel worked on her hair but Annabeth was hardly paying attention to them, her brain kept thinking about what was about to happen… in less than an hour she would stop being Annabeth Chase and she would become Annabeth Jackson. In less than an hour, she would be marrying the love of her life. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, trying to keep the butterflies in her belly at bay.

It had been so long since Percy had caused her butterflies but it wasn’t a bad thing, after all, they had been together for almost eight years and known each other for eleven. Percy didn’t give her butterflies anymore but he gave her a feeling of safety, love, home, happiness and that was better than any butterfly. She felt weirdly calm, she never thought this was how she would be feeling moments away from her wedding, like any bride she had her bridezilla moments but they didn’t last long, not when they usually ended in Percy’s arms, his voice soothing the stress away, joking how they could elope in any moment, how the only thing that matters was their love.

“You look beautiful, honey.” Sally’s voice brought her back from her thoughts, her future mother-in-law had tears in her eyes. Annabeth looked at her reflection in the mirror, two beautiful braids worked as a headband and they ended in a messy bun with small white flowers braided into it, Piper had given her a beautiful but minimal makeover, hints of gold framed her eyelids, her lips had a peachy color on them and her cheeks were covered in light pinks and she looked, well, she looked like the blushing bride she wasn’t. “But you are missing something.”

How I Stopped Biting My Nails After 20 Years Of Non-Stop Gnawing

Please hold the obvious joke, but for most of my life the rule has been “if it fits in my mouth, it’s going in.”My oral fixation makes it a true miracle that I’ve never taken up smoking. I chewed up pen caps, straws, lids, sleeves, and — worst of all — my fingernails.

Seriously, for 20 years those things were so gnawed-up and bleedy, they looked like tiny sea creatures that’d lost their shells. It was an ugly, gross habit that I just resigned myself to after 20-plus years of biting. Save for the odd pair of acrylics, my nails were always unvarnished, ragged and out of place on an otherwise semi-put-together, mostly-functioning adult woman. And then one day, I stopped. Seriously, it’s just over.

Here’s the before and after:

They’re still not the longest (see above), but I’m still floored every time I look at the difference. For those of you (us?) who have all but totally given up hope at a life with a Pinterest nail board and something called mani/pedis, here’s how I kicked my habit and grew out my nubs once and for all:

Paint them, no matter how short and gross

Something bright or intricate, too! This was probably the biggest deterrent for me. Like a magpie, I’m transfixed by bright and shiny things so the thought of fucking up something pretty I just spent time on was totally off-putting. The above picture of my red nails (the one with the rings) was only about a month ago — they grew fast once I backed off and let them. That picture was the first day I stopped biting. Once the polish came on, it never went off.

Replace your habit with something else

I got one of those little plastic water tumblers so I could sit there with the straw in my mouth all day (not chewing, just drinking) to distract me from biting. One of the weirdest things I did — and I’m sure my coworkers all hated me for it — was actually saying “NO!” to myself out loud every time I went in for a bite. The verbal and low-key shameful self-scolding was enough to get me to trap my hand under my leg so I couldn’t get to it.

Treat yourself regularly

Rather than punishing myself with that gross-tasting varnish or smacking myself in the wrist with a rubber band (which some people swear by, but it never worked for me), I worked on a reward system instead. I treated myself to nice, at-home nail care for little while before upgrading to (my fist!) salon manicure on natural nails. I started wearing a lot of rings to being attention to my newly feminized hands and buying the fun nail polish I could never wear before a incentive. Soon enough, my nails were long enough to peek out over my finger tips, tap against a phone screen and dig into my palm. Every time I get the urge to bite, I admire them all shiny and painted and think about how upset I’d be if I had to go back to square one. The visualization is key until you start to see physical results. From there, it’s all downhill.
