I’ll just skip all the part when I rejoice like a shameless fanboy for the interruption of the hiatus cause I think it’s imprited by default in all of our hearts.
From my understanding, the King of Kakin doesn’t really care for a bloodshed or an election, but for a game.
His laugh in the last panel shows he knows what lies behind Nen abilities granted to his princes through the blood ceremony, he can see their Nen beasts and especially how they manipulate them. The presentation of Halkenburg a few chapters ago as the most threatening candidate in the succession war makes me doubt he’d resent his poilitical power and what he can acquire now simply because of a bloodshed. Few of the princes so far, even the youngest ones, appear to be bothered by violence of sort.
We saw this chapter how parasitic Nen beasts can influence a person’s behaviour, body and mind. Bill noted that if Kurapika continued to drain Sairid’s nen, he’d descend into madness. So it’s highly possible than the Nen beasts that are associated to each prince can control their bodies and thoughts.
Before the hiatus I remember theorizing about Wooble’s power acting “unconsciously”, as Oito was terrified and a dark aura awakened around the baby
Later, Kurapika noted something
Specifically, about the Nen beasts appearing all over all around
Someone must be controlling them, but they don’t appear to be controlled at all
And finally, an hint was given by Senristu, who can perceive a person’s true emotion through their heartbeat:
Senritsu who, at this point, had already noticed the double-face of Kacho, who was being manipulative with her sister Fugetsu into allying against the other princes. So it’s not that she notices,… it’s something else. She doesn’t say she “lies”, she says that her entire self is a lie. That something other than herself is lying.
At this point, I’m giving it for pretty much assured that nen powers acquired through the Blood Ceremony are in fact Nen beasts of a possibly parasitic type….
or the prince here wouldn’t be exhausted, who can also control their hosts minds and bodies and freely roam around the ship - notice that this giant hamster had already appeared among those who invaded Oito’s room in chapter 359.
This would explain Halkenburg’s - or whatever his name is- withdrawal from the succession war, something he may not have done of his free will.
And given again the King’s smirk, he appears to know and not care. This whole trip is, to him, simply a game in which is blood children happen to risk their lives.
For what concerns Kurapika’s new nen ability, despite some on point explainations, it does appear to me as a bit of a deus ex machina. Not because it’s overpowered, it’s not - it involves emperor time and must be used before emperor time can be deactived, and only once, he probably needs to know smt about said nen ability and needs to sting the user with the syringe, and said user must stay put during the process, something I don’t see happening with any Phantom troupe member -, but because it’s late. There are plenty of times when this ability would have been useful but wasn’t used. Example? YorkNew city arc. It would have led the story in a different direction but it would have made sense.
What buggles me the most about it, though, is this
It’s an ability shaped around the concept of “allies”. Kurapika remembers his allies. Telling his allies about his nen abilities was a big deal back then, it involved trust, friendship, mortal danger. So why did he leave this particular ability out of the discourse?
My guess is that, as for Alluka, Togashi didn’t plan this from the start. He’s too smart of a writer to forget about something this big.
Anyway, all in all, it was a great chapter. I rarely expect less from Hunter x Hunter - I also rarely expect chapters at all
