Why is Spock the only Mirror Universe character to gain a beard? Where’s Mirror Sulu’s beard? Where’s Mirror Scotty’s beard? Where’s Mirror Uhura’s beard? Come on you guys give me a Mirror Uhura with a truly fearsome beard; you know she’d rock it
Oh, lord- I took a little break from writing today to draw for the first time in I can’t even remember how long. I debated posting it, but I’ll be hooking up my graphics tablet tomorrow to try some digital art for the first time (I’m so excited!!!), and I figured I should mark the beginning of my journey with some old-school pencils and paper.
Like I said, I will be trying digital art for the first time. I am not an artist in any sense, just a hobbyist, but I’ve loved art since I was a kid.
Any tips, methods, words of wisdom, etc, are welcome! 💕
Hey, all ya’ll; I’m writing my Spirk + Mirror!Spock fic, A Crack in the Mirror , and I actually sat down and wrote up some reasons for why I think Mirror!Spock is actually good. Here ya go:
To begin, in the Prime Universe, The Time of Awakening gave the Vulcans their foundation of logical thinking and the pursuit of freedom from emotion. During this time is when a faction who did not believe in Surak’s teachings left Vulcan and later established Romulus. From what I gather, the Romulan Star Empire is the “Empire” of the Prime Universe.
Okay, now flip this for the Mirror Universe. I assume The Time of Awakening has still taken place, but it is the Vulcans who end up rejecting Surak’s teachings of logic in favor of ambition and power. They become the ruthless Romulans of the Mirror Universe. This is somewhat evidenced when Mirror Spock tells Mirror Sulu: “I suggest you remember that my operatives would avenge my death and some of them are Vulcans.”
So, first, Mirror Vulcans = Prime Romulans.
But there is something about Mirror Spock that I can’t shake since I recently rewatched the “Mirror, Mirror” episode– his logic is still perfectly intact. He doesn’t really seem like a Romulan; he’s not barbaric and treacherous like the others (I understand this is a claim with very little canon evidence). He almost seems defeated. He still has his infallible Prime Universe Vulcan logic, yet he exists in a universe that has forced him to betray that time and time again. While everyone else seems to glorify and even relish the brutality of the Empire, Mirror Spock tortures Mr. Kyle in the transporter room and doesn’t even bat an eye when Chekhov is in the agoniser booth because, according to him, “Terror must be maintained or the Empire is doomed. It is the logic of history.” He does these things, somewhat reluctantly, I might add, not to achieve power or because he enjoys it, but because he needs to survive against a force he feels he is powerless against.
Second, logical Spock is a universal constant. He only participates to survive.
Boom- now in walks (or beams) Prime Kirk. He highlights the fact that Mirror Spock is still logical by saying: “I submit to you that your Empire is illogical because it cannot endure. I submit that you are illogical to be a willing part of it.” and “If change is inevitable, predictable, beneficial, doesn’t logic demand that you be a part of it?”
Mirror Spock is hesitant at first, which is understandable per the statements I made above, but when Prime Kirk says, “In every revolution, there’s one man with a vision.”, Spock replies with, “Captain Kirk, I shall consider it.”
I shall consider it!
You can even see on his face that something within him has awakened. He has hope, and yes, he does want things to change. Prime Kirk confirms this by saying later on the bridge, “…that Jim Kirk will find a few changes, if I read my Spocks correctly.”
So, voilà! Spock is actually “good” in every universe because of his adherence to logic even if the varying circumstances cause him to behave a little differently (like growing a beard lol).
Also, I don’t think that even Mirror!Spock would find it logical to proceed to fight a brutal, bloody war only to become the very thing he’s been fighting against. Hence, Mirror!Spock is still a good Spock…with a beard.
mirrorverse idea: mirror!kirk and spock meet normal jim and spock, and mirrorkirk gets really close and traces his hand down spocks jaw really suggestively and murmurs “hmm where’s your beard” and spock is frozen because the only way that mirror!kirk would be comfortable enough to do that is if he was in a relationship with mirror!spock…… but that wouldnt be logical…….. would it?? and meanwhile jim is losing his goddamn mind with what he thinks is nervousness but is really jealousy
