Things People Don’t Tell You about Pet Birds

Here’s a list of things nobody told me before I got my bird.  You’re welcome to fact check and add your own experiences!  I hope this helps someone!

Possibly disturbing images of animal neglect below.

NEVER get a pet bird who lives alone a mirror for their cage.  They can choose their own reflection as a mate, which needless to say isn’t healthy and can be extremely sexually frustrating.  It’s much healthier to get even small birds foraging toys to entertain them.

BAD!

GOOD!

ALL birds need lots of social interaction if they’re going to remain mentally healthy!  This is especially important for birds that live in large groups in the wild like cockatoos, finches, and parakeets, but also true for “loner” birds like Senegals and African Greys.  Without the proper social interactions (hours a day with people or other birds) birds can get bored and pick up destructive habits like feather pulling, biting, and screaming, and even develop mental illnesses like depression or anxiety.  Yes, even parakeets.

Feather pulling removes a bird’s main way of staying warm, which can lead to life threatening things like hypothermia.

Parrot’s body temperatures are around 103 degrees Fahrenheit, much higher than humans, and largely thermoregulate through their feet.  Because of that and their small body size, they can get hyper or hypothermia fairly easily when compared to humans.  In hot months it’s important to provide them with a shallow dish of water they can cool off in, and in cold months, a heating pad or perch they can sit on to keep warm.  Parrots do best in a stable, relatively warm environment; while they can take slight changes, drastic changes in temperature can be very detrimental. Non-tropical/arid birds are a bit different from what I hear, so can’t really talk about them.

Parrot beaks constantly grow, so it’s important to provide lots of chewing fodder (I like to call them sacrifices) for your parrot to chew on or get their beaks trimmed by a professional.

These can be hard calcium treats, wood, and other natural materials.  Some can be plastic but I wouldn’t recommend those as they can be swallowed and impede digestion or become a choking hazard.

Birds are prey animals!  They’re typically very nervous because they’ve been hardwired for centuries to be on the lookout for things that want to eat them.  They’ll get nervous around new things, strange noises, and new people.  They can learn to overcome some fears by careful desensitization, lots of social interaction, and a calm, careful owner.  It’s VERY important to keep them away from predatory animals (dogs, cats, etc.), as it can cause unnecessary stress on the animals.  If they absolutely have to interact, do so in a controlled environment and with one or both in separate carriers, cages, or pens.  Know your animals, pay careful attention to their body language, and be prepared to step in if either looks stressed or aggressive.

My parrot Apollo meeting my friend’s cat, the right way.

Just like humans, birds have dietary needs that must be met if they’re to remain healthy.  A few of the most important are Vitamin D (sunlight!), calcium (especially important in hens), and protein (required to grow healthy beaks, claws, and feathers).  The easiest ways to take care of the first two is to provide your bird with lots of sunlight (direct or indirect depends on the bird) and a constant supply of cuttlebones or calcium treats.  There are several different diet plans out there for all kinds of birds, but all agree that birds CANNOT live off nothing but seeds.  This can cause fatty liver disease and early death, even in otherwise healthy birds.  All parrots are usually fed a diet of pellets, fruits, and vegetables, but the ratios really depend on who you ask.

Here’s a few food pyramids for parrots:

Birds absolutely CANNOT be fed:

  • Avocados
  • Caffeine
  • Chocolate
  • Any greasy, salty chips/popcorn or any processed “human food”
  • Dairy
  • Alcohol (I shouldn’t have to say this)
  • Apple seeds
  • Feel free to add on

Before you feed your bird ANYTHING, please look it up and make sure it’s safe!

Thesis on Morgoth and Sauron and their roles as Dark Lords (Part 2/4)

For my Tolkien project, I decided I was going to explore the dynamics of Morgoth and Sauron and see if I could make an estimate as to whether or not one was more effective as dark lord than the other. I did this in regard as I would not be able to debate whether or not one was more powerful (seeing as the Valar are higher beings then the Maiar, and seeing that Melkor was the eldest, he of course is indisputably stronger than Sauron).

However, just because you’re more powerful doesn’t always mean you’re more effective. We see this all throughout history in examples where generals themselves might not be very capable in battle but are able to gain mastery by being clever strategist. Therefore that inspired me to research if one could argue whether or not Morgoth or Sauron came closer to accomplishing their dominion over Middle Earth (or Beleriand).

I did this by looking at a few key characteristics– longevity of rule (but more importantly, what was achieved), servants (those who served under them and attributed to their victories), their primary enemies (or the state of those they fought against), as well as their defeat (and what caused the finale fall). Then I concluded with their legacy and the impact they have throughout the legendarium.

Servants

  • Armies are what win wars and it’s important to employ those who will help you and not hurt you under your command. What is also important is your relationship with said army and servants. Those who desire your victory will work harder to accomplish it. Those who are merely doing so in order to survive do not possess the same initiative.

General Disclaimer

  • I am not at all an expert, just a very passionate individual in Tolkien’s lore. Therefore some of what is stated throughout this essay may be based upon faulted research and weighed heavily by personal interpretation and opinion. So please do keep such in mind. Most of the information here was found within The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, The Unfinished Tales, as well as Tolkien Gateway and Wikipedia.

Morgoth

Major Servants (* most of these summaries taken from the Tolkien Gateway)

  • Sauron: The greatest and most trusted servant of Morgoth before and during the First Age. Originally a Maia of Aulë named “Mairon”, he was ensnared by Melkor and as “Gorthaur” he became Morgoth’s lieutenant in his Wars of Beleriand. He demonstrated the ability to take the form of a wolf, a serpent, and a vampire.

  • Glaurung: First of the dragons and one of the foremost lieutenants of Morgoth during the First Age– possessed a unique power to charm and ensare his prey and said to be the mightiest of dragons.

  • Ancalagon: Greatest of the winged Dragons of Morgoth. Morgoth unleashed the winged dragons, with Ancalagon at their van. Ancalagon drove back the forces of the Valar, but was stopped by Eärendil.
  • Gothmog: High-captain of Angband, one of the chief servants of Morgoth with a rank equal to that of Sauron. One of the Maiar that followed Melkor to exile, and because of either his brilliant mind or because of his ability to assume an immensely powerful physical form, he was made the Lord of Balrogs.
  • Carcharoth: Bred from the foul breed of Draugluin, the first Werewolf, and fed with elvish and mannish flesh by Morgoth himself. He was the greatest, most powerful wolf to ever live. Carcharoth was set as a guard on the Gates of Angband, and later he mortally wounded both Huan, the Hound of Valinor, and Beren

Minor Servants

  • Dragons: Also known as the Great Worms; they were evil creatures seen mostly in the northern Middle-earth. Greedy, cunning, seductive and malicious, a creation by Morgoth out of fire and sorcery sometime in the First Age. Included species such as fire-drakes and cold-drakes.
  • Balrogs: Balrogath (“Balrog-kind”) were Maiar corrupted by Morgoth during the creation of Arda, who cloaked themselves in shadow and flame and carried whips and swords. Famed Balrogs include Gothmog, slain by Ecthelion, and Durin’s Bane, slain by Olórin (Gandalf).
  • Draugluin: The first werewolf. Bred from wolves and inhabited with an evil spirit sent by Morgoth himself, Draugluin was the sire of all Werewolves of Beleriand, and dwelled with his master Sauron in Tol-in-Gaurhoth, the former watchtower of Finrod Felagund. He was slain by Huan during the Quest for the Silmaril, though informed Sauron that Huan was present. Beren and Lúthien used his pelt to sneak into Angband
  • Giants, Goblins, Trolls: Twisted creatures, created by Morgoth.
  • Orcs: Orcs were the footsoldiers of evil overlords - Morgoth, Sauron and Saruman. Made in the mockery of elves sometime during the Great Darkness.
  • Ungoliant (and her children): Ungoliant was an evil spirit in a form that greatly resembled a massive Spider. Ungoliant’s origins are shrouded in mystery. It is thought that she may have been one of the Maiar, or a lesser spirit, whom Melkor corrupted long ago, but she is not listed among the Ainur. It is also said that she came from the darkness above the skies of Arda, leading some to believe that she may be an incarnation of darkness or emptiness itself.
  • Maeglin: Maeglin was an Elf, the son of Eöl the Dark Elf and Aredhel daughter of Fingolfin. He lived in the First Age of Middle-earth and was a lord of Gondolin, chief of the House of the Mole. Morgoth promised both Gondolin and Idril in return for the location of the hidden city, thus luring Maeglin into the greatest treachery done in the Elder Days. He gave him a token that would allegedly keep him safe from the sack.

Conclusion

  • If one thing could be noted is that Morgoth had a decent understanding of hierarchy. He expressed a remarkable ability within the Silmarillion to gain trust in those around him– something in which could be his greatest ability besides strength.

  • It could easily be said that Morgoth possessed greater servants than Sauron; seeing as many were of his own creations. He had the Balrogs under his authority, as well as dragons and being of unknown origins. He wasn’t suffering in terms of followers and it could even be said that he was a decent lord in terms of servitude.
  • While man suffered under his lash, the orcs were seen as masters in their own right. Maeglin was offered Gondolin upon it’s surrender and the hand of the woman he loved. Gothmog led armies; Glaurung, Ancalagon, and Carchathor were given life. Morgoth didn’t make empty promises– perhaps they weren’t always honest, but he was able to give individuals a purpose.
  • He didn’t abuse what trust was granted to him once he had what he desired and therefore possessed a rather impressive relationship with those who followed him. While some, such as Ungoliant, would come to betray him– such were few and far between, unlike Sauron whose servants often had their own ideas..

Sauron
Major Servants

  • Nazgûl: Known as the Nine Riders or Black Riders, were Sauron’s “most terrible servants” in Middle-earth. Sometime during the Second, Sauron gave nine Rings of Power to powerful mortal Men. It is said that three of the Nine were lords of Númenor corrupted by Sauron, and one was a king among the Easterlings
  • One-Ring: An artifact created by Sauron in the Second Age for the purpose of ruling over the Free peoples of Middle-earth, mainly the Elves. It was also known as the Ruling Ring, Great Ring of Power and Isildur’s Bane because it caused the death of Isildur.
  • Thuringwethil: Vampire servant of Sauron during the First Age. She was Sauron’s messenger, but was caught in the battle between her master, Lúthien and Huan at Tol-in-Gaurhoth (“Isle of Werewolves”). She was slain either by the Hound of Valinor or in the collapse of Minas Tirith. Lúthien later used her cloak to sneak into Angband during the Quest for the Silmaril. Because of Thuringwethil’s ability to change forms, she may have been a Maia
  • Witch-king: The Witch-king of Angmar was the chief of the Nazgûl, King of Angmar and Sauron’s great captain in his wars. A wraith, the Witch-king of Angmar was nearly indestructible, a terrifying warrior, and a cunning strategist.

  • Mouth of Sauron: Sauron’s servant and representative at the end of the Third Age. He had the title Lieutenant of Barad-dûr, since he was so strongly devoted to the Dark Lord. The Mouth of Sauron was one of the Black Númenóreans.
  • Saurman: Saruman the White was the first of the order of Wizards (or Istari) who came to Middle-earth as Emissaries of the Valar in the Third Age. He was the leader of the White Council. In Sindarin his name was Curunír, which meant “Man of Skill”. It soon became clear that Saruman desired to possess the One Ring himself.
  • Shelob: A great spider-like creature akin to those of Nan Dungortheb in Beleriand, the last offspring of the demonic Ungoliant. Shelob fed off with all living things, such as Elves and Men, but as these became scarce in the area, she fed upon orcs. Sauron would sometimes send her captured prisoners for whom he had no further use and amuse himself watching how she played with her prey.

Minor Servants

  • Ar-Pharazôn: Ar-Pharazôn the Golden was the twenty-fifth and last King of Númenor. He was the son of Gimilkhâd, who was the younger brother of the twenty-fourth King, Tar-Palantir. Ar-Pharazôn’s willful rule, and his great pride, led directly to the world-changing Downfall of Númenor and the founding of the realms in exile of Arnor and Gondor.
  • Fellbeasts: Winged creatures with beak and claws, similar to birds but much larger than any other flying beast. They were used as winged mounts of the Nazgûl
  • Giants, Goblins, Trolls: Twisted creatures, created by Morgoth.
  • Orcs: Orcs were the footsoldiers of evil overlords - Morgoth, Sauron and Saruman. Made in the mockery of elves sometime during the Great Darkness.
  • Smeagle/Golum: was a creature who bore the One Ring. He lived in the Misty Mountains for most of his life. In T.A. 2941, he lost the Ring to Bilbo Baggins. For the rest of his life he sought to recover his "precious”. Eventually he would come to seize the Ring from Frodo in Sammath Naur. In his euphoria he died and destroyed the Ring after falling into the cracks of Mount Doom.
  • Werewolves: Wolves, inhabited by dreadful spirits, they were created (or a least corrupted from some other form) by Sauron, who was their master, and who took the shape of a great wolf himself at least once.
  • Wargs: An evil breed of demonic wolves, suggesting that they were inhabited by evil spirits. The origin of the breed is unknown - perhaps they were among the creatures bred by Morgoth in the Elder Days. In any case, Gandalf listed the Wargs among Sauron’s servants in the late Third Age.
  • Vampire Bats: Vampires were mysterious bat-like creatures in the service of Morgoth and of Sauron. The only vampire whose name is recorded in the annals of Arda is Sauron’s servant Thuringwethil, but Sauron himself took the form of a vampire on at least one occasion, to flee Huan.
  • Flies: Tiresome, flying insects.

Conclusion

  • For an individual who was as persuasive and charismatic as he, it was almost more so beneficial to be an enemy of Sauron than among his servants, to which he arguably held a weak relationship with.
  • The orcs within the Lord of the Rings constantly confess to fearing him and seem almost bitter of their existence– often being fed to Shelob; who she herself remarked that Sauron believed her to be nothing more then a pet, in which he was gravely mistaken.
  • Saurman and Golum both expressed a willingness to betray Sauron as soon as they were able and the Nazgûl, his chief servants, were only obeying on the account that their fates were doomed to the One Ring.
  • Even Ar-Pharazôn humored Sauron in a mere attempt for immortality and therefore many trusted little in the Dark Lord himself.
  • One could then argue is that Sauron’s greatest servant was the One Ring, which in reality, was him. Which– if one were familiar with the characteristic of Sauron, would be of no surprise that he trusted himself first and foremost.
  • Therefore Sauron was ignorant in the needs and desires of those in servitude to him and perhaps that was why he favored the more animalistic creatures in his service. Something to which couldn’t and wouldn’t doubt him.

Overall Conclusion

  • Both possessed a various assortment of powerful individuals under their authority. However, Morgoth expressed a more natural ability to lead and keep those beneath his authority, sedated. Sauron was perfect at manipulating those around him, but could not establish a relationship as seemed almost natural to Morgoth. Besides, Morgoth even had the undying loyalty of Sauron, who trusted himself most of all. If he could seduce a maiar such as he, then that speaks levels to Morgoth’s influence in those who listened.

Uraraka hides a yawn behind her clipboard and doesn’t notice the person sneaking up behind her.

“That’s a good look on you,” Aizawa says, coming to a stop beside her.

Uraraka squeaks and blushes, peeking out from behind her clipboard and glaring at Aizawa. “Sensei!” she exclaims. “You shouldn’t sneak up on a lady like that!”

The corner of Aizawa’s mouth twitches. “How are they?”

Uraraka lowers the clipboard and turns to the holographic screens displaying a herd of thousand-ton monsters running, swatting at each other, leaping, and all in all…playing around. On screen, Mina bites Kirishima’s tail and he yelps. Uraraka smiles. Then, straightening her back, she delivers her report.

“Artemis pack seems to be in top-tier condition,” she says. “The test run a couple days ago showed no sign of shifting pack structure—Bakugou is still clearly the point of the pack. Ojiro and Shouji aren’t showing signs of discontent as rear guards, and Tokoyami is as usual, submissive to Bakugou. Any worries we had about Kirishima vying for Bakugou’s position are null. All our results suggest that his insubordinate acts help Bakugou blow off steam. He’s acting as the regulator for the pack.”

“Good,” Aizawa says. “I’m still worried he’s a powder keg on the brink of exploding, but…”

But we need him. Uraraka nods. She gets it. “Apollo pack is due for a test run soon, but I don’t have any worries about shifting pack structure. As a rule, they tend to be steadier than Artemis pack anyway. That kaiju takedown illustrates just how functional they are as a pack. My only concern would be that they rely on Todoroki a little much, but all his psych analyses come back with negligible worries. He’s a machine when it comes to leading; I’ll never understand how you managed to pry him from Todoroki-sensei’s hands.”

“It came at a high cost,” Aizawa says. “Sometimes I wonder if I have yet to realize all I gave up for him.” He frowns.

“I believe Iida briefed you on the results of Alpha Strain’s routine check?” Uraraka says.

Aizawa nods. “Yes, and I did look over the test run results briefly when they came out. What I really need to know from you is how the officers themselves are doing.”

Uraraka rolls her eyes. “Well, Artemis pack is doing as well as their kaiju counterparts. They’re not…close…like Apollo pack is, but they have an understanding. They work together when they’re needed and their ties are strong. I think Ojiro feels inferior,” she says, frowning. “Tokoyami and Shouji balance and rely on each other. Kirishima and Bakugou balance and rely on each other. But Ojiro has no one. I want to look into that.”

“And Apollo pack?”

“Like a family,” Uraraka says proudly. “Midoriya and Tsuyu might as well be siblings. Mina gets along with everyone, and Kouda is protected and looked after by his pack. Todoroki is respected and loved.” Her smile fades a little. “Midoriya told me he’s been having those nightmares again. He had one so bad it woke up his packmates, the morning before the double event.”

“Is it a problem?” Aizawa asks.

“As a researcher, it’s not my place to say,” Uraraka says. “It’s Todoroki’s responsibility to get Midoriya in to a psychiatrist if he thinks the nightmares are affecting Midoriya adversely. I trust his judgment. He’s logical and clear-headed, and if he thought Midoriya was dragging his pack down, he’d do anything to fix it. But Midoriya performed well during the battle, so it can’t be affecting him that much. As a researcher, I think it’s okay to let it go.”

“But as a friend…” Aizawa trails off.

Uraraka sighs. “As a friend, I don’t like to see him suffer. I worry Todoroki is being too cold, but I’m not in their heads. I don’t feel what they feel. I don’t know if Midoriya can handle it, even if he thinks he can.”

“Thank you, Uraraka,” Aizawa says. “For now, I’ll advise the Marshal to withdraw Apollo pack from any encounters with return kaiju until we can get Midoriya analyzed properly. No special treatment aside from that; if he thinks he can handle it, I’ll let him try. But I’m not throwing one of my best officers into a situation where a trauma-induced moment of hesitation could kill him if I can help it.”

“Is it because he’s a good officer, or because he’s Alpha Strain?” Uraraka asks quietly. Not quietly enough, though, because Aizawa gives her a sharp look.

“If you want to talk favoritism and human rights with me—”

“No, no, I’m sorry,” Uraraka says. “It just slipped out. I understand even if I don’t like it.”

“Good,” Aizawa says. “We don’t look it, but we’re skating on thin ice here. The last thing I need is one of my closest to start doubting our cause.”

“I don’t doubt us,” Uraraka says. “But they are my friends, too.”

“Then you know better than any of us why we can’t have anyone too nosy poking their head into what we do,” Aizawa says.

Uraraka nods.

Aizawa jerks his head towards the door. “I’m going to check in at R&D. Make sure our officers don’t kill each other, won’t you.” He turns away sharply.

Uraraka sighs and collapses into a chair, rubbing her temples. Ah, she had ruined her good mood. Why couldn’t she keep her mouth shut?

She looks up at the kaiju moving millions of gallons of water like it was nothing as they pounce on each other and roll and snarl, jaws parted in what might as well be smiles. Aizawa-sensei was right that they were soldiers who lived to fight, but they were also human underneath the mass of scales and claws and teeth and fur. They were human and they needed to be treated as such. Aizawa-sensei couldn’t separate their human and kaiju selves, couldn’t help but see the whole picture; it was only logical, but also terribly heartless.

She wishes Iida were here. Iida always knew how to phrase his concerns logically. He was always on the same wavelength as Aizawa-sensei, but Iida had a heart. He cared for their friends as much as she did. He knew that Aizawa-sensei’s ways weren’t fair and he would find a way to word it so that Aizawa-sensei would agree. Uraraka thinks about calling him, just to hear his steady voice and have him talk her down but no, she had taken this shift to allow him to sleep in for once. She wouldn’t wake him up even if the sound of his voice, heavy with sleep, brought peace to her mind.

Besides, she loved this part of her job. She loved the kaiju. That’s why she was here and why she put up with the ethical dilemmas of their work. And to think Uraraka Ochako, a woman fresh out of graduate school, could befriend the groundbreaking hybrids and work alongside the legendary Aizawa-sensei to keep them all safe—

She frowns, and then swears softly. Speaking of safe…

She pounds the com. “LOCCENT to HYCOM, what the hell are you guys doing? They’re going to kill each other! Get on it, officers!”

Enrichment days, Midoriya thinks, are awesome.

Uraraka had told him why enrichment was an important part of keeping their kaiju healthy and their mental health stable, but Midoriya couldn’t really fathom all that science-y mumbo jumbo. All he knew is that his hundred-foot long lungs were heaving and he hadn’t felt this alive in days.

Ojiro’s ear frills lift and then lower, a taunt. He’s poised and ready to leap, rear in the air and spayed out in front of him, a reptilian dog ready to play. Midoriya tenses his own haunches and leaps out and to the side, ready to pounce on Ojiro’s unprotected flank. Ojiro tears away from him, long blue tongue hanging out of his mouth as he pants. Midoriya chases him, hind legs bunching as he picks up speed.

They tear around the group of kaiju in an outer circle, so fast Midoriya can feel the wind whistle past his ears. Ojiro makes for the relative safety of Shouji’s tentacles. He’s right—Midoriya won’t run under Shouji’s body because he doesn’t have a death wish. Shouji eyes him with what Midoriya guesses is amusement. Tokoyami, draped across the slope of his back like a black, feathery ridge, ruffles his wings in irritation at the disturbance. Midoriya huffs. He bats at one of Shouji’s tentacles and gets another two slithering out after him.

Yelping, Midoriya jumps away. Shouji makes a sound that is definitely amusement. Tokoyami, decidedly woken from his dozing atop Shouji’s back sits up and glares at Midoriya for a moment before beginning to clean Shouji’s scales with his beak and claws. Shouji makes an appreciative noise and lowers himself into the water. Ojiro, realizing his protection is about to crush him, scurries out and right into Midoriya’s waiting paws.

Midoriya body slams him, knocking them into a wrestling match in the water, jaws parted and snarling, the flats of their paws batting at each other. They’re careful to avoid each other’s spines. Ojiro gets to his feet and starts to run again, but Midoriya grabs onto his hind leg and drags him down, pushing him onto his back and holding him down with a heavy paw. Ojiro huffs.

You win.

The hivemind is alive with emotions and thoughts and impressions from all the hybrids but Midoriya can pick out Ojiro’s voice easily, warm and amused, just a little disappointed. This is why Midoriya was a flank and he was rear guard, though. It was only a natural result.

Midoriya lets Ojiro get to his feet and bumps shoulders with him affectionately, brushing their hides together from shoulder blade to hip. Midoriya feels a spike of pain and hears Ojiro exhale sharply and he pulls back, alarmed.

Shoulderouchpulled, Ojiro projects and Midoriya can feel the faint throbbing as if it were his own pain. He sniffs at the sore spot on Ojiro’s shoulder, projecting his own worryconcernwasitme?

Ojiro shakes his head; he had landed funny on his leg when running from under Shouji. Midoriya laps at the sore spot anyway, as if he could take the pain away just from cleaning it. Ojiro pushes at Midoriya with his nose, appreciating the sentiment. He pads off to see Bakugou probably, who will look at his injury, snort, and say well, what do you want me to do about it?

More likely he’ll point out that it’ll heal when they shift back so Ojiro should just deal with it, but Midoriya doesn’t want to give Bakugou that much credit. Ever. Hey, when one of your own kind nearly shreds you for trying to play fight with him, it sticks with you.

His partner gone, Midoriya turns back to find a new bloodmate to brawl with. Mina has taken to leaping up in the air and swatting at Tokoyami on Shouji’s back, who screeches at her and claws back. Shouji doesn’t seem too perturbed by Tokoyami’s distress. Their section of the hivemind is an almost sibling-like squabble, easily dismissed as not real fighting.

Ojiro and Bakugou are together. Kirishima is dodging Tsuyu’s attempts to smack him with her tongue, and underestimating her speed if that yip is anything to go by. Todoroki, predictably, isn’t engaging in the fun and instead sits off to the side, still managing to look elegant with the long column of his neck extended and the sun glinting off the sharpness of his facial features. Kouda sits beside him, the only kaiju bigger than Todoroki, head on his paws and eyes closed, taking in the sunlight on his rock-like hide.

Midoriya approaches Todoroki, bobbing his head. It’s a causal invitation to play. Kouda looks up, senses Midoriya’s intention, and moves off towards Shouji with a passing good luck offered to Midoriya. Todoroki blinks slowly.

He regards Midoriya with passing interest, showing no intention of getting up from where he’s comfortably splayed in one hundred feet of water.

Midoriya tries again. Runchasejumpcatch? He suggests. Bitepawgrowlplay?

I don’t, Todoroki replies. You go.

Midoriya whines. Not pack without you.

Artemis is here, Todoroki points out. Bother them.

But Midoriya doesn’t want to bother them. He wants to see Todoroki get up and do something, enjoy himself for once. Todoroki’s always so stone-faced and business-minded; he never got a break. This is their break. Their scheduled time off to play like the puppies at heart they all were.

Midoriya not-so-delicately swipes a paw through the water and splashes Todoroki in the face.

Todoroki, to his credit, doesn’t react as angrily as he could have. His shoulders tense, but other than that he doesn’t move, dripping with water. His scales glitter and then he’s covered in steam, burning away the salt water. He exhales loudly once, expelling salt from his nostrils. He’s not amused.

Midoriya, however, is. He runs in a circle around Todoroki, continuing to splash him while Todoroki burns away all the water. He paws at and chews on Todoroki’s tail until Todoroki shifts and growls at him. He actually gets Todoroki to whip his head around and shift towards him. Midoriya leaps back, but Todoroki doesn’t follow. He’s almost got him, though. Midoriya pads back towards him and headbutts his shoulder affectionately, rubbing against him like a cat.

Todoroki growls again and Midoriya does it again. He can feel the tension in Todoroki’s body and his mind, irritated by Midoriya’s pushiness. As always, his mind is impenetrable, but Midoriya can tell it’s a swirling mess right now. He probably shouldn’t taunt Todoroki too much—he was much stronger than Midoriya, and bigger, too.

Midoriya flicks his tail across Todoroki’s nose almost flirtatiously and Todoroki snaps. He gets to his feet faster than Midoriya expected and swipes at him. Midoriya’s fast enough to get away with only a few scales off his hide, but Todoroki can reach far.

The chase doesn’t last long. Midoriya knows to run hard when he’s irritated Todoroki this much, but Todoroki has speed, length, and power and Midoriya’s only purpose in agitating him was to get him up and running anyway. Todoroki swipes Midoriya’s legs out from under him and Midoriya goes down, rolling onto his back.

Todoroki is on him in a second, hovering above Midoriya and prodding at him with one paw while Midoriya flattens his ears and growls, his muzzle crinkled into a snarl. Todoroki prods at his cheek and Midoriya hisses, swatting at his paw. Todoroki jabs at him again and again, Midoriya on defense but still belly-up, vulnerable.

Then Todoroki lets out a low, rumbling growl and parts his jaws, making a clicking noise. His paws are on either side of Midoriya’s shoulders and he dominates the hivemind, pushing against Midoriya’s consciousness and subduing him.

Midoriya’s growl peters out and his muzzle flattens. He makes a small, chuffing noise and lowers his paws, allowing Todoroki to nose along his neck, nipping at the soft skin he finds there. He’s completely limp under Todoroki’s ministrations and when Todoroki nips at his chin, Midoriya dares to lick his chin. Todoroki growls softly, pleased. He parts his jaws and wraps them around Midoriya’s mouth. Midoriya goes still and allows Todoroki to shake him a little and press a paw over his heart, claws kneading Midoriya’s vulnerable underbelly.

This is complete submission.

Todoroki releases him a moment later and steps off him, eyeing Midoriya one last time. The hivemind is grudging fondness from Todoroki and a sense of satisfaction from his kaiju specifically at Midoriya’s submission. The rest of Apollo pack are pings against Midoriya’s mind, vying for Todoroki’s attention next. Todoroki steps away from Midoriya, but not before the tip of his tail brushes against Midoriya’s nose.

Midoriya’s heart sings with so much pleasure, he knows it reaches the rest of his bloodmates through the hivemind. Mina snorts, but she’s Todoroki’s next target, rolling on her back easily and grabbing at his face to lap at his chin, playfully submitting to her point.

Kirishima, inspired by Midoriya’s display, bumps Bakugou. Unlike Todoroki, though, Bakugou doesn’t tolerate any kind of playfulness. Her turns on Kirishima in an instant, snarling. Kirishima barks back, pawing at Bakugou, playing with fire. Bakugou charges him and Kirishima hops back swatting at his face. Bakugou knocks him off balance immediately. Kirishima falls onto his belly and Bakugou climbs over him, grabbing him by the scruff of his neck.

The fight goes from Kirishima’s body immediately and he lets Bakugou give him a few rough shakes, snapping his head back and forth. Midoriya winces in sympathy. It looks like it hurts, but when Bakugou releases Kirishima, there are no teeth marks in his neck. Kirishima sinks bonelessly into the water, turning over curling his paws over his chest, whining.

Bakugou ignores him. Kirishima whines louder. Kidding, kidding! The hivemind says.

Kirishima places a paw against Bakugou’s muzzle and Bakugou’s lips pull away from his gums with the force of his growl. Don’t touch me.

Aw, Bakugou…Kirishima plays cute harder, this time wagging his tail.

Bakugou snorts. I hate you, he says.

Kirishima doesn’t say ‘I adore you’ in so many words, but his love for Bakugou isn’t exactly subtle across the hivemind. Even Midoriya can feel the force of it. This time, when Kirishima presses a paw to Bakugou’s muzzle, Bakugou knocks it aside so he can lean down and nip at Kirishima’s chin. Kirishima’s tail goes wild.

Bakugou steps off him and Midoriya huffs at Kirishima. Gross, he says.

Kirishima might as well grin at him, tongue lolling out of his mouth. He flips onto his stomach and growls gently at Midoriya. Midoriya growls back, tensing to leap on him.

Bakugou throws himself between them, jaws parted as wide as he can spread them, and roars.

Bakugou is not Midoriya’s point. But he is a dominant member of a pack and Midoriya, a lower rank than him, cowers back, tail tucking between his legs and ears folding back. He shrinks into a ball, unable to run as his muscles lock.

Bakugou doesn’t have a chance to make a move. Todoroki is at Midoriya’s side and in front of him with an ear-splitting roar of his own.

The two points square off, roaring at each other and posturing. The rest of their packs slink away save for Midoriya and Kirishima, frozen with fear and confusion that innocent playing had instigated a point-versus-point battle.

Bakugou’s jaw frills extend and shake, brilliant red-orange sunbursts against the pure white of his scales. He’s intimidatingly large and fierce, but Todoroki is not shaken. He flares his own spines and ear frills, and the vents running down his back hiss and spit steam. Their heads starts low but slowly rise in tandem with each other until Todoroki’s height beats Bakugou’s.

Bakugou strikes first. He swipes at Todoroki’s neck, but it isn’t with the flat of his paw as he had swatted at Kirishima—this was with claws extended, hoping to tear Todoroki’s throat open. Todoroki bats him away, but then Bakugou is throwing himself at Todoroki, standing on his hind legs to use both paws to punch at Todoroki’s face. Todoroki mirrors him and they fight like tigers, dueling with their front paws and then dropping to all fours so they can try to ram each other with their bodies before standing back up again.

Todoroki should be faster than Bakugou, but Bakugou is angrier. He manages to sink his claws in the flesh of Todoroki’s hind leg and hold on as Todoroki snarls and tries to throw him off. Bakugou locks his entire body onto that haunch and tears at Todoroki’s leg with his back legs, trying to cripple him, but Todoroki doesn’t let him. The steam that spews from his vents grows hotter, as do his scales, and in one burst, he forces super-boiled steam into Bakugou’s right three eyes and burns the skin off the pads of the paws hooked onto him.

Bakugou howls in pain and lets him go. When they stand face-to-face again, Bakugou is blind in three eyes and his scales are ashen and flaking off where Todoroki burned him. Todoroki is limping, his back left leg shredded. They circle each other and Midoriya feels for the first time, the seriousness of this fight.

SPECIAL OFFICERS BAKUGOU AND TODOROKI STAND DOWN, IMMEDIATELY, Yaoyorozu shouts over the hivemind, using HYCOM’s controls to amplify the volume of her voice so that it drowns out the rest of the thoughts and voices of the hivemind. Bakugou, Todoroki, and the rest of the hybrids wince at the loudness. Kouda tries to cover his ears with his paws.

All of you are to return to base for a debrief at once, Yaoyorozu commands. You are not to engage each other on the way to base or I will personally see you turned off from the Hybrid Strike Corps.

Before he can help himself, Bakugou thinks, Sure you will. There are so many places for a kaiju hybrid to go.

It would be my absolute pleasure to turn you off and watch the Jaeger teams tear you apart, Yaoyorozu says heatedly.

Let them try, Bakugou says, bearing his teeth.

Bakugou, Mina speaks up before anyone else can. That’s enough.

Like I wanna hear that from you, Bakugou says, but the fight is gone from his mind and his limbs. He and Todoroki limp back to their exit bays, tension still humming across the hivemind. Their packs follow, subdued. The mood of contentment and relaxation fizzles out like steam in open air.

Mimicry

I was worried when I first inherited Claudette that she would be lonely and depressed. I knew parrots were supposed to be social creatures, but I was barely equipped to handle one, much less get her a companion. Aunt June, who had “generously” given the bird to me after discovering how loud and energetic she could be, assured me that Claudette was an independent sort and would be fine on her own.

Claudette and I had a rocky start. I was timid around her large beak and sharp claws and she was slow to trust yet another new person. She’d apparently had a number of homes in her twenty-five years, all of whom had given her up much the same as Aunt June had. That was mostly why I kept her; I felt sorry for her and wanted her to finally have a home, even if it meant a steep learning curve.

just think about pokémon rangers, they’d be like “we’ll get over there faster if why fly”

“yes i know, but i dont have access to a ship”

“thats alright, we can just hitch a ride”

“thats a good idea human, but by all means, we are in a forest? i have not seen any roads for your species vehicles”

the pokémon ranger of course, does the natural and OBVIOUS thing- which is to capture two flying pokémon that have the strength to carry them

“oh, I did not know you had your own pokémon with you, will you send them to get help?”

“what? no! we’ll ride them. come on, just climb on its back, lean forward, and hold on tight. but not too tight, and dont squeeze too much either”

“wait, human! are you sure? i can understand that you ride your pokémon, but in the air, without some kind of saddle?”

“oh these arent my pokémon, these are wild”

“ARE YOU TELLING ME WE ARE GONNA RIDE WILD, FLYING, POKEMON, WITHOUT ANY SAFETEY MEASURES?”

“yeah but like.., if you fall, they’ll catch you”

“HOW CAN YOU EVEN TRUST A WILD POKÉMON TO DO THAT? ARE THEY NOT DANGEROUS? DO YOU NOT SEE THE SIZE OF THAT BEAK AND CLAWS?”

Cackling Grackles

Nobody likes being the new kid. They like it even less when they move from a nice, familiar suburb to the backwoods of rural Florida. It’s hot, it’s humid, and it doesn’t look like it’s progressed much since the 1960s. After Mom and Dad divorced, Mom decided she wanted to “get back to her roots” and dragged me five hours south to settle in her childhood hometown.

Maybe it wouldn’t be so bad if she hadn’t done it mid school year and I’d had time to settle in and adjust. Maybe it wouldn’t have been so bad if I’d had some kind of chance to get to know some of the other kids. Maybe it wouldn’t have been so bad if I wasn’t a giant nerd with an obsession for fantasy and role playing games at only ten years old (thanks for that, Dad).

I pretty much had a bullseye painted on my tie-dyed backpack.

As a chicken owner of 23 years, all I have to say is- ROTFL! XD That chicken (was it rooster or hen?) was probably trying to defend it's territory. It also wanted food (yes chickens will turn cannibalistic it's why in battery farms they have clipped beaks and claws). When you ran, you were basically telling the chicken "your tactics work, keep using them!!" (Dogs and mailmen is a great example of this) Next time, turn and face it, put the sole of your foot up and let the chicken attack that ;)

LIFE SAVING ADVICE

But seriously tho i wish I had known this. I just up and ran like a chicken (heh) with no thought for how to ACTUALLY get out of this situation.

Thanks anon! Next time I encounter a chicken i know what to do :) (cause let’s me real. There’s gonna be a next time)

@athos-silvani you gave me an idea. an adoribull idea

“I can’t believe I’m being held hostage in my own home by a bird.” Dorian stares bitterly out the window. The day is perfectly warm and sunny, but there are swans in his garden.

Bull comes up behind him, wrapping his arms around Dorian’s waist. “Were you planning on leaving?”

“Not a second sooner than I have to, Amatus.” He accepts a kiss on his cheek. “It would just be nice to walk outside without having my ankles snapped at by a bad-tempered feather duster.”

“You just need to give it some time. At least they don’t let burglars anywhere near the house.”

Dorian sighs. “What heroic creatures they are. We should buy them golden collars and name our villa after their flock.”

Bull laughs. “You could change the Pavus crest to be a swan instead of a peacock. Hang a portrait of Melvin in your house in Qarinus.”

Footprints in the Snow

Thor sits on his father’s throne.

He’s young, and sitting on it feels like losing your way inside a forest. It’s made of sunlight and oceans-sighs, afternoon shadows and midnight silence, elven wood and gold, gravity and distance. It’s standing at the top of the tallest tower surrounded by four pillars, one to represent the east, the other the west, south and north.

And you can see all of Asgard from up there, all its forests and seas, mountains and deserts and Thor sits there for hours and there’s sunlight and starlight in his hair, wind and salt, sweet pollen and sand.

And his father’s ravens come and go, inky feathers and pale beaks, claws tapping on stone, beady eyes searching for the sun and moon; they leap off the tower as birds, stretching their wings like a fan, and come back as men, young boys with black eyes and secrets on their tongues, their cloaks smelling like pines and jasmine, their hair cool and streaked with moonlight. They press a hand to their hearts and bow before Thor, their lips sticky with cherry and blackberry juice, their fingernails tainted with stone-dust, and they lean close, one over each of his shoulders, cup a hand over their mouths and whisper and Thor listens. They tell him about ships that look like nut shells, their sails as white as a fish’s spine; about a mountain that sings at night and how the dust falling from it sticks to lashes fluttering in the nearby villages and brings about dreams of green pastures and sweet milk; about two sets of footprints in a grey landscape, there for miles on end, and then gone when they reach the ocean; about places so old no one remember their names, lands untouched by the hands of gods or men, where it’s so cold that the heart grows tired and the soul turns white and moves like fog until it’s all gone.

Their warm breath on his neck, the loneliness blooming like a flower made of frost inside his heart and the young god of thunder closes his eyes.

 *

A single black tree in all that clear ice, four huge branches all twisted like a young boy’s braid; it casts no shadow and smells like blue smoke.

The wind moves so fast it sounds like a whistle and the heart of the young god of thunder feels like it’s floating, fluttering like a leaf getting close to the skies.

The tree’s roots move like a snake beneath the ice and Thor can feel the movement in his bones, deep and great.

Thor stands so close to it and the bark looks like it’s covered in scales, purple-silver and shining like coins. It shakes its branches and speaks.

“Traveler. What is it that you seek?”

Thor looks down, mouth set in a hard line, soft furs draped over his shoulders, leather straps twisting around his wrists. He thinks of the ravens’ red mouths and his lips bleed.

“You will find nothing here,” the tree says.

Thor wipes his mouth.

“Only ice and death.”

*

Blue starlight pours over a castle of ice crafted by nature’s gentle hands. Inside it sits the god of thunder. His hand is outstretched, his fingers spread, and he’s painting with lightning. It’s bright white and it trembles and zigzags through the icy air, forming faces and bodies, smiles made of electricity. They’re all there for a moment and then they’re gone and others appear, frowns and laughter and joined hands. And Thor watches the forms move over the gigantic walls of ice and when he reaches with his fingers to touch them, they flicker and disappear.

The ice is resistant. Thor uses the heat of the lightning to engrave a face in it. He’s standing there with his forehead touching the wall of ice and sculpts a face next to his own, using his forefinger to create the eyes and the cheekbones, the long hair and the neck; his small finger to create the lips; his entire palm to create the body, and one gentle fingernail for the beautiful lashes.

The heat causes the ice to crack and drip and all that white light is making him dizzy, and when he’s done he separates the form from the ice, presses his palm to the still heart lying inside it and shocks it to life.

The night trickling in through the ceiling paints the form’s hair black and Thor’s smeared blood on the ice turns its lips dark red.

His beautiful ice prince draws in his first breath in Thor’s arms, and Thor names him Loki, because in Asgard, Lokee means heart.

*

The god of thunder knows he can’t take Loki with him to Asgard. Loki’s a beautiful creature of frost and shadows and Asgard’s heat will be swift in stealing the breath from his lips.

He can’t stay with Loki so he builds him a home, a tall castle that looks like it’s made of starlight and air. But a home is not enough-Loki never asks him for more-but Thor sculpts an entire kingdom for him; towers and houses and walls for protection, forests made of frost and breaths, roads as white as milk leading  everywhere.

And when he spots flickers of loneliness in his lover’s eyes he fills the kingdom with life. He gives Loki two brothers carved from ice and names them Helblindi and Byleistr; three brothers living in a kingdom of frost that Thor names Jotunheim.

Thor visits Jotunheim often. He only leaves when the cold threatens to stop his heart. They live on cherries and kisses and Loki’s warm body in Thor’s arms.

And when Thor sits on his father’s throne and the ravens whisper in his ears of two sets of footprints in a grey landscape, Thor smiles and thinks of two sets of footprints in the snow.

anonymous asked:

Do you have a picture of Molasses? I'm so sorry.

I’m not gonna show you guys the sad mess she is now.

I’m gonna show you what I got to see.

In order.

The Ramsey Pidge and I have a very close relationship.

Molasses was Richard and Victoria’s first baby, and when I asked, they let me see their shiny new egg.

I dealt with a lot of depression while she was a nestling, and dropped the photo ball pretty hard. (Normally, I take weekly update photos from hatch day on)

Here she was on Weaning Day, at Four weeks old.

Here she is at Seven weeks, showing outstanding potential. ^v^

On the First of February. And you can see her color getting deep and her better laced Big Girl feathers coming in.

Look at those shiny new lace feathers!

This is the last shot I have of her when she was well.

Now, let me introduce you to her Mother.

This is Victoria.

And this is her Father.

Richard.

Her Grandmother, Nurray.

Remember that hen I told you about whose response to a 5 foot wild snake coming out of the wall into her cage was to PUNCH it in the FACE, STOMP on it, RAKE it with her claws, and BITE the FUCK out of it NONSTOP until I could save it from HER?

Ladies and Gentlemen, behold the 4oz badass bitch, Nurray, whose name means Radient Moon in Turkish. ^

And her handsome mate, Metin.

His name in Turkish means Tough. ^v^

Tell me that Victoria is not his smooth, lady-like spittin’ image.

Metin was the best investment I ever made to improve a blood line!

This is Rosequartz (named her before discovering SU XD), Nurray’s Mother and Molasses’ Great Grandmother.

This was my Foundation hen. ^v^

And you can see the attitude in her bold stance! She was no more afraid to kick my ass for messing with her babies than her Daughter was of doing her DAMNEDEST to turn that ratsnake into a belt!

I’ll never forget the day her first baby hatched.

16 Grams. My very first baby COF.

I picked him up, kissed his little head, and cradled him against my cheek…

And oh my God, Rose went huge eyed, came the closest I have ever seen a pigeon come to WAILING, and leaped off her nest to attack me beak and claws first, with her poor mat looking all over the place in utter confusion at the back of the cage like “The fuck just happened?!”

Guys, she saw me lift it to my mouth and then it disappeared.

She thought I ate it, and was going to MAKE ME FUCKING PAY!!!!

I had to show it to her, pick her up, and set her down on it to convince her that it was still ok.

And every day after that, I had to let her chase me down to bite me until she wore herself out chewing and flung my hand out of HER nest space!

Eventually, she came to realize that I never hurt any of her peeps and always returned them safe and comfy to her. And we developed a bond of trust.

Her husband (who never saw me as anything that even RESEMBLED danger to his peeps) was much more easygoing.

Behold, Rose’s mate Glasgow: the second most Structurally Excellent Cock I have ever encountered!

I fell in love with the COF as a breed the moment I laid eyes on him.

He has is share of mismarks, but his build is damn near perfect!

He’s SO bold, and SO freindly and chill, and just… WHAT a pigeon! What a breed! I HAD to know more! And the more I learned about them, the deeper in love I fell.

Because of Glasgow, I will ALWAYS raise COFs!

He and his Wife gave me SO many amazing babies!

Guys, this is Glasgow and Rosequartz’s Son, Poorly Made Plush Toy: A fantastic red bar Satinette.

And by Fantastic, I mean the man who started the Classic Old Frill Club declared Plushy to be the best COF he had EVER SEEN produced!

He got his name from the way he used to loaf as a baby. His chill pose was such a disjointed pile of loose limbs that he looked like a haphazard rush job of a plush bird doll. XD

Look at them…

Now look at her.

Can you see them? Their stances? Their attitudes? Their faces?

I would have loved nothing more than to see her loving life with her new human family. To see, as she grew, who influenced what part of her.

To be able to show her family these pictures of her ancestors and say things like: “She’s her Mama’s spittin’ image!” or “Hah! That’s DEFINITELY Nurray’s Granddaughter!”

There is nothing worse than having to mourn a living thing that is still alive..

This was cathartic. I’ll treasure this ask when she’s gone.

Thank you.

“Birds are natural fliers,” Mr. Sannon began, addressing his classroom. “It’s instinctual. They need a jumpstart, mind you, and they’ll pick things up through a natural learning process, but the concept of flight, the ability to adjust pitch and roll, and knowing how hard to flare before they land, or how wide to spread their wings to soar, this comes with the territory of being a bird. When they look upward, they don’t see something empty that exists separate from them. Unreachable. They see a road, and they know, innately, that they possess the tools to travel on that road. It’s a bit like us, reaching out toward objects to manipulate them. That’s something our body knows how to do. If we want to affect our world, we use our hands. The tool fits the task. Instinct.”

The classroom collectively nodded a bit. Those who were paying attention, anyway. Which was most, in this case. Flying was an elective course, and being here required certain physical attributes. Typically, students didn’t go to flight class who weren’t personally vested in the idea. Avian eyes stared eagerly back at him, young and excited. Feathers were fluffed with anticipation. The first day was always exciting. The second day was typically cautious and had half as many students.

“You are not birds.” He said flatly.

The class full of decidedly bird-like students looked sidelong at each other, some with bemusement, others with genuine concern that their professor may have taken leave of his senses. But a few remained still, having discerned the meaning of the statement.

“You are Vectors,” He continued, “Which means, at your core, you are a human dressed up in feathers. That grants you a great deal of instinctual ability, yes, but it is human ability, not bird or cat or dog ability. You didn’t learn to lift things by using your beak or your claws, you used your hands. You didn’t learn to hop and fly when you were little, you learned to crawl and walk.” He skipped over an amendment about infancy bypass education. At least, for the moment. “And I’m going to assume the majority of you don’t have baby pictures of mommy throwing up in your mouths.” He smiled a bit at the chorus of gagging, and chuckled.

“We miss a lot of these obvious cues, thanks to infancy-bypass tanks,” he explained, unable to avoid it further. “I’m betting most of you were putting solid food into your own mouths by the time you actually encountered any. But those of you who did nurse as children instinctively looked for a mammalian chest instead of chewed up bird vomit, which, I assure you, is an entirely un-birdlike thing to do. In short, if you were hoping to leap off a cliff at the end of today’s lesson and take wing under nature’s gentle guidance, I have news for you. At the moment, you have more in common with a rock than a bird, except that you’ll be screaming more on the way down.”

There were chuckles among the students, but they were tempered by the gradual realization that today would be less glamorous than they’d hoped. Sannon took a moment to gauge the reactions. It was easy to pick out the ones who’d never tried to fly, they were generally attentive and agreeable, eager despite the warnings. Unsure yet how cautious they should or shouldn’t be. There was always a group of students who’d had successful glides from playground equipment or rooftops. They tended to lean back in their chairs like they owned the place, confident in their ability and dismissive of the implied danger. He hated that. Parents loved to give their children a taste of flight before these courses to “warm them up,” but all it did was fill them with false security. He’d rather have a blank slate to work with.

Once in a while, there would be one or two in the back with genuine flight experience. Laterals, usually. Illegal at their age, even with their physical condition, but life happens regardless of the convenience of law. It was just a ploy to help sell body sockets anyway, and not everyone could afford one. These children were quiet and distant as they watched, un-involved in the conversations of the other groups. There was none of the posturing here. Despite having the most experience, they were generally the most attentive. Life had not given them the courtesy of doing without their wings, and they had already experienced the fear of that reality. Whatever had driven them to the skies at such a young age, be it anatomy or pressure from some other source, it likely hadn’t left. Half of these students would never try flying again once they came to realize the physical demands, but these few were here to get better at something they couldn’t do without. He had one, today. Lateral raptor of some kind, with a swallowtail. She was perched in the back of the room, waiting, as he spoke.

“We are not well designed for flying,” he continued, speaking over the chatter. “Sorry. It’s a fact. That we can do it at all is pretty impressive; our anatomy isn’t the best for that sort of thing.” he waved a wing limply, which was a little undermined due to the obvious strength in his arms.

“We’re poorly balanced, too heavy, too bulky, and generally not strong enough to do what would be traditionally referred to as regular flying. But with training and discipline, you can get to a point where flying is…” he pondered the word to use. “Reachable. If only for short periods.

“You need to ponder what you’re trying to do, here,” he continued, “understand it in your mind, before you try it. Flying upward to a building top from the ground is the functional equivalent of leaping up a ladder with two hands and no legs, an entire rung at a time instead of alternating, without stopping to rest.” The room dropped its volume level noticeably. Most of them had not considered what the actual physical requirements of a sustained climb were.

“And that’s just getting aloft,” he continued, “then you need to stay there, suspended from that ladder, repeatedly doing chin-ups from the highest rung, until you can find a place to safely drop from rung to rung to the floor, fighting your own weight and momentum, or you fall and die.” The room had silenced now. The inexperienced group were looking nervously back and forth at each other, with lingering glances at arms that had probably barely passed the physical education requirements for their grades. The gliders were slowly realizing that what they’d done before and what they were now facing were substantially different. And there in the back, his veteran. Her breathing had not changed. Her posture had not fallen.

“How…” one of the students asked, “how do you practice something like that?”

Sannon smiled, and looked toward the back.

“It’s Elysium, isn’t it?” he called back to the lateral. She looked surprised to be addressed directly, but nodded. “How do you suggest they practice something like that, Elysium? Is there an easier way? Am I off my mark, here?”

The young kite looked about the room, as if seeking social permission to respond. It was always difficult being singled out. He knew that, and would catch up and apologize later. But they needed to hear it from one of their own. And as he’d expected, her gaze shifted ever so slightly, as he had seen happen in nearly every veteran that had ever graced his classroom on the first day. That realization that these kids were utterly unprepared for what they were facing. The knowledge that if they looked for a shortcut, they would end up broken and battered on the pavement. The need to convey the degree of effort they were facing now.

“Get a ladder.” She responded, and Sannon’s smile widened. He tapped his toggle case, and the closet behind him opened, revealing a rack adorned with rows of long, extending ladders, fully equipped with the grim realization by the classroom that they would, in fact be doing exactly that. He looked back up at the sea of disbelieving stares, and pulled the first ladder off the rack.

“Shall we get started?”

-excerpt from the Full Disclosure lorebook

Hey folks! Fun stuff going on over here with the upcoming lore book. I’d say the text is about 80% written, maybe more, and general assembly has begun. Soon I’ll start working with artists and getting the imagery assembled, and we can move on to funding and publishing! I wanted to give you all a double treat today, so aside from this chapter bumper (each of the corp based chapters in the lore book gets a little slice of life story to help ground you, this one was for MarsCo) Im also going to toss up the in-progress Table of Contents. This isn’t final or finished, but it will give you some hints of things you can expect to see!

anonymous asked:

If you could remake PoR/RD, what changes would you do?

I… honestly wouldn’t change too much on the writing/characters side of things, so most of the changes I’d like to see are mechanical/gameplay related.

PoR

- Remove support limit, add an “active supports” mechanic to balance this. You’d select up to five support levels to give a bonus at any one time, and the active A support on the last level would determine altered endgame dialogue and transfer bonuses.

- Add a few more supports for characters that don’t get very many, like Elincia, Nephenee and Stefan.

- Use RD’s re-assignable skill system.

- Nerf the earth affinity. Add a level cap for bexp based on the chapter number that can’t be exceeded, encouraging its use to raise weaker units rather than overpower strong ones.

- Nix the localisation added Ike/Elincia subtext.

- Give weapon ranks to laguz units, maybe give unique effects to each character’s claw/beak to differentiate them more? Let them retaliate unshifted like in RD.

- Make Chapter 27 a multi-part chapter like Chapter 17, so that the player can save before the Black Knight fight.

RD

- Smooth out the erratic difficulty curve, buff dawn brigade, reduce Ike, Titania, Shinon, Haar’s starting levels etc.

- Rebalance unit caps, especially for mages. Make magic more powerful in general.

- Keep the flexible buddy system (the constantly switching chop and change armies kind of necessitates it) but add fe12 style supports through the base convo menu for certain pairs. Give paired endings to a few more characters, particularly the RD exclusive ones.

- Rebalance laguz units using the PoR system where transforming gives an additive bonus, rather than doubling stats.

- Balance mastery skills to be more in line with how they were in PoR. Reduce their capacity cost to compensate.

- Add equippable items like in PoR.

- Reveal the Black Knight’s true identity in a less anti-climactic way.

- Give the black knight Nullify. Seriously how did they overlook that.

- Localise all the scenes and lines of dialogue cut from the Japanese hard mode script. Give me Soren riding on Ranulf’s back damn it.

- Have Micaiah find out about the blood pact before she even enters the war. Have her object to Pelleas dragging Daein into a war on behalf of their oppressors, let her press him into revealing the truth. That way, the Daein side enters the war with a clear purpose and narrative direction.

- Let the player see Ike’s memory scene on a first playthrough. That’s way too important a detail to leave for new game+ content.

- Reveal that Micaiah is the True Apostle earlier. Use that as a springboard to grant her greater agency in the endgame.

- Allow Micaiah to land the finishing blow on Ashera too, with an altered ending movie to match.

- Make ikesoren and ikeranulf canon, instead of ambiguously canon.

And while graphical updates go without saying, I wouldn’t want to see any redesigns. Everyone looks great just the way they are.
