bc i love these goons

/ I’ve been thinking about Keith + backseat _ing for hours so here we go:

  • it’s not out of wanting to undermine someone or assume compete control he does it.
  • It’s his pragmatic side wanting to ensure the task is completed as effectively and efficiently as possible, paired with his keen attentive eye for detail
  • most of the time it’s not even intentional backseating it’s just he noticed something worth pointing out
  • I don’t specify the verb bc honestly it could entail so many things and that’s truly fantastic a few Examples but literally SO MANY THINGS I SWEAR TO GOD.
    • backseat piloting: enough said lmao
    • backseat talking. yes you heard me. it’s true. correcting little things and nitpicking phrases just in the conversation (”that’s… times ten” / “i don’t think you’re using that word correctly”)
    • backseat navigating/travelling/hiking (oh my god this would be the worst bc he’s the nature Survival Boy like keith kNOWS about this stuff and he’d want to make sure everything is done right and the best way possible)
    • backseat packing. honestly i don’t think keith would be that bothered but he’d at least chip in about how it’s being packed
    • backseat construction - he would probably want to step in at some point lol
    • backseat solving - on that note ages ago i mentioned keith + some kinds of puzzles and quick small arithmetic things ( “swap those numbers over”)
    • backseat boardgames: “no go the other way. no, that way.” / “that’s not gonna work”
    • backseat literally so many things i love it too much rip
  • It doesn’t even have to be something he’s particularly skilled in (like cooking lmao) but if he feels necessary to weigh in and offer some advice objectively to improve the situation from his assessment of what’s going on then he absolutely will
  • honestly dependent on the subject it can run the risk of him sounding like a know-it-all at times or being bossy
  • IT DOESN’T HELP THAT HIS WAY OF SPEAKING IS NATURALLY JUST SO IMPERATIVE AND DIRECT LOL
  • so as a result, it’s not uncommon for people to take offence to it when really the isn’t an ulterior motive. if he’s being critical as opposed to simply observant then you’ll know the difference
  • theoretically, it would be entirely plausible to trick Keith into doing a job you don’t want to do, just take none of his backseat advice and make the simmering suggestions build into genuine frustration and okay no really he can’t take this anymore patience yields focus but this is getting ridiculous he’ll handle it
  • but if someone backseats him oh my GOD. lmao.
    • unless it’s shiro offering him some encouragement and advice and it’s not backseating anyway, he’ll listen
    • just think in the balmera with Lance the sheer notion of being told how to use his blade and make the cut that frustrated hiss: “i know what im doing!”
