Close was born in Sydney and served in Rhodesia during the South African War. The Islands at the entrance to Buchanan Bay are named after him.

Frank Hurley was an Australian photographer, filmmaker and adventurer. He was also the official photographer on Shackleton’s Trans-Antarctic Expedition, 1914-17, and served as a photographer with Australian forces during both world wars.
