BAXPAX MITTE HOSTEL

Berlin, Germany.

I had the most amazing experience in this hostel :)

It was as clean as it gets, totally renewed. Amazing bathrooms and every single room and hall is painted with an specific theme.

I show in the 3rd picture the room in which I stayed. It was called skyline and it had every important building in London, France, NewYork, etc.

If I’m right I think it was 15 euros a night with a 10 or 5 euro deposit for the key.

  • Free Wi-Fi and if you don’t have any laptop/ipod touch they let you use their computer for 3 euros if I’m not wrong.
  • They have two hostels, one near the trainstation and one near the city centre. This one is the one near the trainstation. It took us around 15 minutes walking to get there. (If you’d like directions I still remember how to get there)
  • The very best bathroom I used around my trip. It certainly was.
  • The receptionists are really nice and housewarming.
  • Lovely, clean rooms with lockers.
  • You can cook your meals in the kitchen and there’s some discount in alcohol, pretty nice.

and finally for those who LOVE FOOD…wait for it….

Berlin’s hostel was the best bathroom I’d ever used in my trip but it was the best meal I had as well.

It wasn’t inside the hostel but just two buildings away. You will spot the restaurant, it has lots of pictures of different meals you can order. They sell kebaps, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, salads and those things.

My last picture shows what I ate, I was absolutely delicious. So freakin’ delicious that I ate the same thing the very next day and I took half of it for the train hours. I don’t remember the actual name but you can always show the cook the picture and he’ll know what to do :) It was around 3 euros. YES, 3 euros for the most delicious meal of your life.

Modedesign workshop berlin

3. Three Little Pigs

The pope in town

What a madness about the Pope’s visit in Berlin. Half o the city is blocked because he’s driving arround the city like razy to meet dozents of people. The rest of the roads are blocked because of demonstrations: Some for and some agains hin.

The craziest thing is this huge poster on the “Bild”-Zeitung building:

Sweden - France & Japan - USA

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011 - Germany - 15th day

It’s been decided, Japan and USA will battle it out on Sunday for the final match of the Women’s World Cup 2011! It wasn’t an easy victory for the US, the game on Wednesday started off slow with the Americans scoring one goal in the first half and missing a few opportunities to score against their very talented opponents. France scored a goal early on in the second period but it was not enough as the US women scored two more goals in the span of three minutes and secured their spot in Sunday’s final. France will now play Sweden on Saturday in the deciding match for third place.

Japan beat out Sweden on Thursday evening to secure their first ever spot in the finals of the Women’s World Cup. This was the first loss in the competition for Sweden but a well deserved win for Japan. Sweden scored their first and only goal early on in the first ten minutes of the game but it was not enough to move them forward to the final. Japan would leave the game with three goals against Sweden’s one and high hopes for their first appearance in the final.

It has been a really great tournament and the last two games will take place this weekend, as always here at baxpax Downtown Hostel Hotel. These are sure to be the most exciting games yet and we can’t wait to see who everyone will be rooting for!

Saturday .16 July: Match for 3rd place

5.30 pm Sweden - France

Sunday .17 July: Final Match

What to do on a Sunny Day in Berlin

Treptower Park:

External image
Treptower Park is a must-see in Berlin. Located right along the Spree River, the park is not only beautiful but large enough to spend hours walking around and exploring. It is the perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon in Berlin. There is a charming Biergarten where you can bet you will always see older Germans dancing to “Schlager” (old German pop songs) and several restaurants located right on the water, a few even situated on boats. Paddle boats are available to rent and spend a few hours lazily paddling down the Spree while enjoying the beautiful scenery of Treptower Park. The park is also home to the DDR-era “Spreepark”, an old amusement park that was built in the 1960s but was never dismantled after it closed. Follow the giant ferris wheel that can be seen in the distance as you walk around the park and after about 20 minutes you will reach the area where the abandoned park still stands behind a fence. Beyond the fence you can catch a glimpse of the old rides- a rollercoaster track and a log ride, among other eerie remnants of the park. Also located in the park is the Soviet War Memorial to the fallen Soviet soldiers of WWII. The memorial is massive and magnificently well done. (SBahnhof Treptower Park, Ringbahn)

Tempelhof Airport:

External image
Since being shut down in 2008, Tempelhof Airport has been used as a public park. All of the original airport buildings are still standing and the runways are now full of bike riders, runners, kite flyers, and rollerbladers. There are designated areas for grilling and even an area where you can let your dog run loose. An old airplane used during the Berlin Airlift still stands at Tempelhof. Not too far away from Tempelhof at Platz der Lüftbrücke there is also a memorial to the fallen soldiers of the Berlin Airlift. (SBahnhof Tempelhof, Ringbahn and U6)

Walking Tour / Scooter Tour / Bike Tour

External image
A great way to see Berlin and enjoy a beautiful day is a scooter or bike tour. There is so much to see in Berlin that can be difficult when sitting on a bus full of tourists, so get your own overview of Berlin this way and really see everything the city has to offer. If you need a bike, you can get them at our receptions. For scooter rental check out the website of our good friends from Berlin Scooter. If you feel like walking around Berlin, there are free walking tours daily that will take you to all of the must see sights in Berlin. There are even some themed tours that can take you to specific sights if you have a preference for that. There is a pick up @baxpax Mitte and @baxpax downtown every morning. Guest staying @baxpax Kreuzberg just head up to the Brandenburger Gate and meet there. For more infos check out the NewEuropeTours Website!

Mustafa’s

External image
After you have worked up an appetite on your scooter or bike tour you have to experience Mustafa’s. Döner is a staple streetfood of Berlin and this unassuming stand in Kreuzberg is THE place to experience your first taste of a Döner Kebab. You can rest assured you will not taste a Döner like Mustafa’s anywhere else in Berlin. You may have to wait in line a bit at peak times during the day, but the end result is well worth it. The Döner’s at Mustafa’s are seasoned perfectly and loaded with everything from sweet potatoes to crumbling feta cheese. (There is also a vegetarian option for those who don’t want the Döner meat). Tip: If you don’t want to wait in the line at Mustafa’s Mehringdamm location, try their newly opened stand in Wedding (Leopoldplatz), the line is sure to be shorter, but the Döner just as delicious. (Mehringdamm U6, Leopoldplatz U6)

Victoria Park Kreuzberg

External image
The Kreuzberg (Berg = Mountain) near Mehringdamm is a rare sight in mostly flat Berlin. Climb to the top for a great view over Berlin and cool your feet in the nice little waterfall. The surrounding park is also a nice place to hang out and at night the Berg is a regular hangout for those wanting to enjoy a beer and some music courtesy of other park-goers. Buy your beer at a local “Spätverkauf” or in one of the supermarkets (Mehringdamm U6 or Platz der Lüftbrücke U6)

Karl-Marx Allee / East side Gallery

External image
A walk down Karl-Marx Allee will give you a good idea what most of the architecture of the East looked like. This grand Allee was originally named Stalinallee and is lined with Stalinist era apartment blocs. A short walk from Karl-Marx Allee is the East Side Gallery, the longest remaining stretch of the wall which has been painted by artists. Next to th the Eastside Gallery you can find the YAAM (young african art market). There you can get delicious afro-caribian food and chilled drinks while sitting on a beach and relax.

LAST BUT NO LEAST:

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011 - Germany - 5th day

Interesting matches yesterday.
Everybody exspected a big victory for Norway against the most exotic team of the world cup: Equitorial Guinea! But the ladys fighted hard and showed an impressing performence. But in the last minutes the pressure from Norway became stronger and stronger and com to an explosion: Norway’s Emilie Haavi - called the bomber - made the only goal of the match and safed the three points for her team.
In the other match the more and more improving Austalians faced worlds #3 Brasil. The game did not produce the goalfest many had expected. The match was of a very high standard, however, with both defences putting in fine performances. Finally Brasil won 1:0 by a goal of Rosana.

Tonight it’s the host’s group that’s playing. First Canada - who performed excellent against Germany - faces France. The game starts at 6pm.
holders Germany meet African champions Nigeria in Frankfurt at 8:45 pm. Last year’s FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup provided an appetiser for Thursday evening’s clash, as the German juniors beat their Nigerian counterparts 2–0 in the final. The meeting between the seniors could well be decisive in determining the final Group A outcome.

FIFA Women’s World Cup 2011- Germany- 4th day

Yesterday the weather was beautiful and we again saw some great games- the World #1 US women’s team rose to the challenge and took the victory over South Korea, ending the game 2-0. Berlin was the site of much celebrating and parties after fans watched their team become the first of the competition to win by a more than 1-goal margin, Sweden and Colombia also faced off with Sweden ultimately winning the match 1-0.

Tonight Equitorial Guinea takes on Norway in their first ever game away from their home continent. Will they be able to take on the seasoned Norweigans or will they succomb to the pressures of playing away from their home turf? 2007 runner-up Brazil will also take on Austraila, the 3rd youngest team in the tournament.

Join us this afternoon on the rooftop terrace at baxpax Downtown Hostel Hotel for some more exciting games, cold drinks, and a pool!
