baudouin of belgium

July 31 - Anniversary of the death of His Majesty Baudouin of Belgium(1934-1993)

Incline Thine ear, O Lord, unto our prayers, wherein we humbly pray Thee to show Thy mercy upon the soul of Thy servant Baudouin, whom Thou hast commanded to pass out of this world, that Thou wouldst place him in the region of peace and light, and bid him be a partaker with Thy Saints. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Royal fact:

Queen Fabiola of Belgium suffered from five miscarriages, the last two nearly killing her and the final leaving her unable to have children. Aware of her husbands duty as King to have an heir, she told her Baudouin to ask for an annulment so he could marry again and finally have children. The King categorical refused his wife's suggestion and assured her that he married her for love, not for the children she could give him.

How cute are Victoria, Madeleine, and Carl Philip?

Queen Juliana is seated next to the birthday boy. Behind him are Prince Bernhard, Queen Margrethe, Prince Henrik, Queen Sofia, Princess Lillian, Queen Fabiola and King Juan Carlos and Baudouin. Then a few rows back we have King Harald and Queen Sonja and Princess Benedikte of Denmark.

Rest in peace Fabiola of Belgium (11 June 1928 - 5 December 2014), consort to Baudouin King of the Belgians for 33 years until his death in 1993. I met her when I lived in Brussels in the 1990’s. She was a lovely lady, with beautiful manners and what my Belgian friends liked to call “a swan neck.”

“But you know, in the end, I think life is beautiful.”
