Kill Bill Vol. 1 director Quentin Tarantino was a big fan of the 2000 Japanese movie Battle Royale, so he cast Chiaki Kuriyama (who played Takako Chigusa in Battle Royale) as Gogo Yubari. Gogo Yubari is not a real Japanese name. “Gogo” derives from Mach GoGoGo (aka Speed Racer), a Japanese anime that Tarantino liked when he was young. Yubari is the name of a small town in Hokkaido, northern Japan, that is famous for melons and film. Tarantino’s first visit to Japan was to showcase Reservoir Dogs at the Yubari International Fantastic Film Festival (x).
As components of the British battlecruiser fleet clashed with the German High Seas Fleet proper, at the Battle of Jutland, 1916, a cameraman aboard the destroyer HMS Lydiard captured all hell breaking loose. On the left, waterspouts form up around Vice-Admiral Beatty’s flagship, HMS Lion, hit 14 times. More prominently,
on the right,
HMS Queen Mary is consumed by a catastrophic explosion ending
1,266 lives; it leaves behind a spectacular smoke plume to be their pall.
After taking fire from the German battlecruisers Lützow and Derfflinger during the Battle of Jutland, the HMS Invincible suffered a penetrating hit on her ‘Q’ turret. The hit detonated within the turret, setting off her midship magazines and creating a massive explosion that blew the ship in half. Of her complement of 1026 officers and sailors, only six were picked up by the HMS Badger. This picture of the magazine detonation was taken from a nearby destroyer. May 31, 1916
Are you reading MTMTE? Are you scared of all your babies dying horrible deaths and/or suffering the loss of everything they hold dear? Well, I can’t do anything to prevent that from happening, but I can provide you with this very quickly drawn, rather ugly character sheet, in hommage to the Battle Royale Manga, so you can take your favorite red marker and cross out every single baby who bit the dust! Never forget the fate of any member of the Lost Light! Print it out and hang it on your door so you are consantly reminded that the pain of comic books is very real!
Will make the rest of the characters and a prettier version with actual drawings as soon as I can.
Men of the Royal Irish Rifles at rest during the opening hours of the Battle of the Somme - 1 July 1916. This first day was infamously the worst day in the history of the British Army. Come night the Fourth Army had suffered 57,470 casualties,
19,240 men killed.
BATTLE OF JUTLAND 1916
The Battle of Jutland took place between the British Grand Fleet and the German High Seas Fleet on the 31st May 1916 in the North Sea, off the mainland of Denmark.
Although it was the only major naval battle of World War I, it became the largest sea battle in naval warfare history in terms of the numbers of battleships and battlecruisers engaged, bringing together the two most powerful naval forces in existence at that time.
So who won?
The British lost more men and big ships.
Historians seem to think the battle made no difference to the course of the war and therefore was a British victory.
Both sides claimed it as a victory.
