Now with these news that probably the last battle will be in the Riverlands, do you think winterfell will be destroyed? And if it is, doesn't it mean that our Starklings are in great danger? Along with the people that probably will come to Winterfell foi aid? What your thoughts about it? Why are they in the riverlands?
Daenerys had a dream of defeating an army armoured in ice at the Trident. Jaime has a similar dream when he is in the Riverlands, in which he is reminded of his promise to protect Rhaegar’s children… So I’d say there is a strong possibility of that happening…
(I think Jaime’s promise might be important as well, it could be foreshadowing him saving Jon’s life at some point.)
I don’t really like thinking about Winterfell being destroyed, but I’ve considered it to be a possibility for a while now… So what would that mean for the Starklings?
If the North needs to be evacuated at some point, the place I’d go to is the Vale. It would probably be impossible to get all the people in the North there travelling by sea, so they’d have to pass through the Neck and then the Riverlands. While Sansa would be reluctant to leave Winterfell again, she would probably be the one leading her people south. Arya might join her, or she might be with the armed forces, so I’d actually say the two of them are safe.
Jon will be in the thick of battle for most of the season, so he will probably be in the Riverlands as well if that’s where the war is happening.
But there must always be a Stark in Winterfell. This is a recurring statement in Bran’s narrative… So I believe Bran will try to ‘work his magic’ from there and will refuse to leave it, even if it is likely to be destroyed.
Now, worst case scenario, it’s not just Winterfell that is lost, but the entire North…
We set out to save the Shire, Sam and it has been saved - but not for me. - Frodo, The Return of the King
This is part of Tolkien’s bittersweet ending which GRRM loved so much. He might follow it by letting Jon and/or Daenerys die after saving the world, but what if he even goes a step further?
The Starks and the North are the heart of the story, what if in the end, the North can’t be saved?
I’ve thought about how that may play out…
The old songs say that the greenseers used dark magics to make the seas rise and sweep away the land, shattering the Arm[.] - Bran VII, AGOT
I’ve come to believe that one of the possibilities is that even with dragons and/or wildfire and the enormous army that has been gathered, humanity won’t be able to defeat the Others. In that case, Bran will have to use the magic of the COTF to sacrifice the North in order to save the rest of Planetos.
