“Excuse me,” says the battle droid. R2 cannot roll his eyes, but he twitters in binary, something hard to translate but best summarized as:

you heard me arsehole [the literal translation here would be: human excrement funnel]

I will shoot you,” says the other battle droid. B-1 models, flimsy in the face of a lightsabre – or a blaster, or a well-aimed stick – but more than a match for R2.

“No you won’t,” says the first one, “the General needs him.”

“Well at least let me threaten him a little,” pouts the second droid.

“Why?”

“It’s so –”

boring chips in R2 right, it’s boring?

“Yes!” says the first droid. And then he adds, more out of a sense of duty than any real conviction: “Republic scum.”

“It isn’t boring,” says the second droid. “Last week, Grevious killed my best friend. At least. I think he was my best friend. I can’t tell us apart, really.”

you have no names

I’m B-1,” says the first droid.

“And I’m B-1,” says the second.

“Mass-produced,” says the first.

“Could be worse,” says the second.

I was mass produced, R2 says hurriedly. but Anakin takes care of me.

What do you mean?”

I’ve never been shot for target practice, says R2, and I’m allowed a name and –

It isn’t that bad,” says the first. Maybe the second. Hard to tell. “Anyway, you’re Republic scum and – “

The smack-shriek of a blaster. The first/second droid collapses, minus head. His companion says, “Never shot for target practice?” in a tone of voice that is, somehow, different

never ever, says R2. my friends wouldn’t let it happen.

“Friends,” says the droid. “He wasn’t really my best friend. He just went on patrol with me more than the others and I got used to him. Familiar face, you know. When the General killed him – uh – I kind of felt….bad.”

wanna get out of here?

“Roger roger,” says the droid, with feeling. Then: “Roger. That’s a name, right?”

yup, says R2.

“Great. Great,” says Roger. Then he hesitates. “What’re your orders?”

I don’t order you – oh, fine, babysteps, look just get me out of here.

“And make sure that your Jedi doesn’t lightsabre me.”

Roger, roger, trills R2.

“Fuck you,” says Roger who, it seems, is a very fast learner.

“Is Bruce in here?” Tim figured he might be— Bruce spent a lot of time in the children’s wing of Wayne Enterprises. There were a dozen or so kids in daycare most weekdays, and Bruce liked to hang out.

Tim liked to hang out too. They had nice snacks, and he’d known most of the kids since they were toddlers. And sometimes naps were mandatory.

“Conference call,” Damian told him. (For someone who claimed to hate naps, snackfood, kids, and humanity in general, Damian also spent a lot of time in the children’s wing.) “I don’t know where.”

He went back to what he was doing, which was arranging a set of pewter soldiers into a complex model of a battlefield, presumably for the benefit of the preschooler sitting next to him.

“What’s this?”

“The Battle of Issus, 333 BC.”

“Right, obviously.” Tim decided he was curious, so he settled down on the mats to watch.  Damian finished his model; he pulled a marker from the art table and used it as a pointer.

“Okay. This is the Macedonian army, outnumbered but in the better tactical position, south of the Pinarus River. Their leader is Alexander the Great. And this—” He pointed to his enemy line. “—is the Achaemenid Empire. They’re about to lose.”

Damian tapped his marker on the Macedonian right. “This is the companion calvary, Alexander’s elite force, and they—” he cut off when he noticed his pupil digging in the toy bin, clearly distracted. The kid came up with a battered Transformer, which he set behind Damian’s lines.

“Elliot. Alexander did not have robots.”

“But,” said Tim, rummaging through the box himself, “did he have wizards?” He pulled a bearded magician out of the tub and held it up for Damian to see.

“You know he didn’t.”

Tim passed the wizard to Elliot. “But what if he did?”

“Drake.”

“How would that go?”

Drake.”

“Abracadabra, Alexander!” Elliot yelled, gleefully smashing through Damian’s entire left flank.

“Damn it, Drake.” Damian sighed in frustration— not quite the rise Tim was hoping for, but still something. He dropped Elliot’s discarded robot back into the box.

“I don’t know what you were expecting,” Tim told him. “Elliot’s four. He’s too young for— what is this— military history?”

“He was doing fine before you showed up.” Damian started to re-erect his soldiers, but he gave it up after Elliot came in for a second pass. “Which is typical, isn’t it?”

“Good one.”

“Thank you.” Damian crossed his arms. “Fine. I’ll bite. When is he supposed to learn this kind of thing?”

“High school? Maybe never.”

“That can’t be right.”

“Have I ever lied to you?”

“Frequently.” Damian rolled his eyes. “I’m getting a second opinion.”

“I’ll wait.”

Damian checked the room for potential allies. “Thomas?” he called over his shoulder, “You learned military strategy as a kid, right?”

Duke looked up from the book he was reading to a pair of kindergardeners. “Just you, man.”

“Told you.” Tim fished a bag of plastic ninja from the toy box and arranged them pointedly into a row. “How are you still surprised by this kind of thing?”

Damian glared at him. “Okay, first of all? I’m not a— hold on a second. Elliot!”

Elliot froze with a large, plastic dinosaur held aloft over the battlefield. He drew it sheepishly back to his chest. “Sorry.”

“Not in the calvary wing,” Damian told him. “You’ll scare the horses.”

“Here?” Elliot pointed to the front of the phalanx.

“Yes.”

“RAWR.”

“Aim for his center.” Damian turned back to Tim. “Anyway. Why are you still talking to me? I thought we had an agreement about unnecessary contact.”

Full Galra AU - Keith grows up in the Galra empire.  As a fighter pilot, he’s on the front lines battling the Voltron paladins.

Of course when Keith catches Lance on some remote planet, he doesn’t recognize him as the prick in the blue lion who keeps singling him out in every battle.  Whatever.  He captured a paladin of Voltron.  Everybody who ever said he’d never get anywhere with his “discipline issues" can suck it.

Don't forget Kylo's deadpan reaction when Mitaka mistakenly told him that BB-8 stole a freighter and escaped Jakku. LOL Seeing that little dumpling in the flesh (so to speak since he's droid), would probably make him amused because Beebee looks more like a child's plaything than a battle machine. Of course, Beebee would then probably shock him with his laser a la R2D2 style. LMAO

He’d probably be severely annoyed, hahaha. “Look at this smart-ass droid. To think I chased through half the galaxy for you. Pathet– OW!!”

The Measure of a Man (or other person)
Distance and Reach

In sword fighting measure refers to your ability to reach your opponent, and their ability to reach you. If you can’t reach them you are out of measure. If you need to take a passing step to reach them, you’re in a long measure. And if you can hit them from where you’re standing, you’re in measure. I recommend you simplify this to descriptions of distance or reach for readers.

The more distance you have over your opponent, the more time the defender has to react. The less distance, the less time the defender has. But the roles of attacker and defender change quickly. If they have less time to react to your attack, you will have even less time to react to their counter.

All this stepping forwards and backwards is like a constant mind game where each fighter searches for control.

When retreating from an attack, the defender could retreat to a minimum safe distance, allowing them to make a smaller move to reach their opponent than their opponent had to make to reach them. Even a smaller person with a shorter sword can best someone with more reach than them, by better controlling their measure.

In the illustration bellow, X (on the right) and Y (on the left) have the same reach. X takes a full step forwards and makes a cutting attack to reach Y, and Y takes only a small step back to successfully dodge. Y now makes a cutting attack using a lunging step and X is too close to retreat in time. X’s full attack also left them unable to defend in time with their sword.

X could have tried retreating as their swing finished for more time to get their sword ready to defend, or done a partial cut, making their weapon a threat needing to be dealt with before Y could counter.

So why not always use this strategy? Why would you ever attack first when this can happen?

In the next scenario, X attacks with a lunging thrust that brings them just in range of Y, but Y takes a small step back. X doesn’t stop the attack and now takes a full step forward, keeping their sword pointing at Y’s throat. Y tries to take a full step back in response, but is out of room, and even if they weren’t their full step still would not have brought them out of reach. X’s larger first step allowed them to catch their target in the end.

Y could have defended with their sword if they knew how to win the crossing. That will be covered in “A Crossing of Blades

There are thousands of variations of stepping backwards and forwards or where Y or X could each win even these scenarios in different ways. But I hope these two examples will help you get into the mindset of why a character may advance or retreat. Often a retreat to a long distance will be simply to reset the battle from unfavourable conditions.

If you get in too close, and don’t have control over your opponents weapon, you’ll make yourself vulnerable. You might also enter grappling range. More on that in Your Body Everything is a Weapon” (chapter coming soon)

If you’re attacking and it requires more than one step, it’s often advisable to move your sword as if making an attack while you do so. If it takes two steps for you to reach your opponent, then in the time it takes for you to take one step they could take one step forward as well and be in range to strike you. Giving them an attack to deal with will make them think about defending as they enter your space instead of attacking.

And of course, most battles aren’t going to happen like a platformer video game. Circling will occur.

You might be thinking about how much it must suck to be backed up against something or someone right now. And yea. It does. Fighting back to back is not advisable in a real battle if you can afford the space. But you know what? You can pull the back-to-back trope from my cold dead hands. If it’s that difficult to do, think of how much more impressive it actually is if your characters can pull it off.

I’m not here to tell you how to make a battle practical or accurate. But to get you in the mindset of what’s dangerous or what’s smart. In the end, tell the story you want to.

What are your: Personal top 4–6 Padmé costumes; Favorite 4–6 non-Padmé costumes; Favorite SW film plot-wise; Favorite SW film music-wise, if you have one; Favorite 1–3 SW spaceships, if you have any; Favorite behind the scenes goofs, gifs, or anecdotes?

I’ve been wondering when I would get asked what my favorite costumes are!

Top 5 favorite Padme costumes, in no particular order:

-The Yellow Picnic Dress (AotC)

This dress changed my opinion on an entire color. I used to hate yellow. Like really hate yellow. Bet then I saw and studied this dress and it is so beyond beautiful to me. It’s so flowy and feminine and colorful. Also her hair! My favorite hairstyles for Padme are always the curled ones, and plus, she has the side buns which are a little shout out to Leia’s buns. Not to mention I love that entire scene in and of itself because they are in a natural setting of a field of grass and flowers, so different from cold and colorless space, and it’s one of the few time Anakin and Padme are truly and genuinely happy. It’s before the war, it’s before Shim dies, it’s just a happy little moment between them, and the yellow summer dress really evokes that.

-The Blue Tatooine Dress (AotC)

(Or as I like to call it: The Desert Goddess Dress) It’s just really pretty? I like the color and the silver details. I love her hair since it’s also curled and has slight buns on the sides. I love the cape but I’m not a big fan of the cloak that goes over the whole outfit. But I really find it funny that she chose a dress that shows her mid-drift while visiting Anakin’s family (she did the same thing visiting her own family how iconic.)

-The Blue Gloved Nightgown (RotS)

Honestly I love all of Padme’s nightgowns but if I had to choose between them this is my favorite. I like the color, I like her hair, I love the fact that she sleeps in a tiara. Despite the long gloves, it’s a bit more practical than the pearl embellished blue nightgown from previously in the film. It has seashells on it, though you can’t tell unless seeing High Quality stills of the dress. Also it’s worn during a very emotional scene and is one of the last costumes that she wears, so it has an added importance.

-The Parade Dress (TPM)

Honestly the only one of her outfits as a Queen that I like. Her other Queen outfits are too dark and over-the-top for my taste. I mean I get why they’re dark and over-the-top, but they just don’t appeal to me personally. But I really like the one she wears at the end of the film. I love the white dress and pastel pink and yellow of the cloak. I like how it’s somewhat of a slight callback to Leia’s dress during the ceremony at the end of ANH. (In case you can’t tell, I Absolutely love parallels between Leia and Padme’s wardrobes.)

-The Funeral Dress (RotS)

I love this dress so much. I love the colors, I love her hair, I love the flowers, it’s all just so pretty and regal but also very sad. So many sequins! Trisha Bigger (the designer of most of the costumes) said it was supposed to resemble the lakes and waterfalls of Naboo, and Natalie Portman said it reminded her of Ophelia from Hamlet, and I think they’re both absolutely right. And she’s just so beautiful like absolutely the angel that Anakin thought she was. Even in death, Padme is more beautiful than any of us will ever be. No lie, I want to be buried in something like that.

-Honorable Mention – White Geonosis Outfit (AotC)

One of her more practical costumes (except for the fact that it’s white (I mean really you shouldn’t wear white into battle) (of course the costume department said they made it white so that it would stand out in the red/orange sand) (still, white will get so dirty during a battle) whatever, I digress.) This costume has by far the most amount of screen time than any of her others. I really like the cloak and silver armbands too. It’s also a bit similar to Leia’s Hoth outfit. I actually thought about cosplaying this one but I have no idea how to do that freaking hair.

Top 5 non-Padme costumes, in no particular order:

-Princess Leia’s Hoth/Bespin outfit (ESB)

Like it’s literally just a white jumpsuit but Carrie Fisher made that thing look so regal and badass. I don’t have much to say about it, I just like it a lot?

-Princess Leia’s Ceremony Dress (ANH)

Yeah it’s a plain white dress but it’s prettier and more feminine than the other plain white dress. I love the cape effect of the sleeves even though it’s not actually a cape. I also really like the necklace and hair. I’ve considered cosplaying this one too.

-Luke’s Dagobah Costume (ESB)

I like that it shows his biceps. It’s also dirty and kind of grungy, which you wouldn’t think of as a good Look for Luke but damn does he make it work.

-Lando’s Blue Outfit (ESB)

The lining of his cape is literally embroidered with dragons. Iconic.

-Luke’s Ceremony Outfit

I love that it’s so obvious that Luke is wearing Han’s clothes here. Because we all know Luke didn’t pack much when he left Tatooine, so he didn’t have a lot in the way of fashionable clothes. But Han helped him out and donated an outfit. Except for the canary yellow jacket. That was not Han’s and no one has any idea where Luke got it from.

-Honorable Mention – Princess Leia’s Bespin Gown (ESB)

The first time Leia wears color! (even if it is an unfortunate shade of red.) I like the shape and texture of the cape/cloak and that is has a vague floral pattern on it. I really like her hair too. Too bad it doesn’t have much screen time.

Favorite SW film plot wise?

-Lol I don’t watch Star Wars for the plot. But seriously, I think they all have unique and interesting plots (except for TFA)

Favorite SW film music wise?

-They all have fantastic music but I have to say Rogue One had very unique music compared to the others. I guess because it wasn’t John Williams, which I love John Williams! But I really enjoyed the soundtrack for RO.

Favorite spaceships?

-Nubian Ships (Prequels)

(Pictured: J-type 327 Nubian Royal starship) They’re just so shiny and remind me of mirrors. Fun fact: Captain Phasma’s armor is made from the melted down hull of one of Palpatine’s Naboo ships.

-Kylo Ren’s shuttle (TFA)

It’s pretty simple but very intimidating. I love the long V-shape wings, they kind of remind me of a bird of prey.

Favorite behind the scenes stuff?

-So many of the actors make their own sound effects with the lightsabers and blasters.

-Carrie making Mark wear her Leia costumes. (I wonder if she ever got him to wear the gold bikini…)

-All the many times that you can see Hayden Christensen fall down in bts videos. It really supports my head canon that Anakin has bad balance because of the prosthetic arm.

Wow this was a loaded ask. I hope I answered everything to satisfaction!

Battling Insecurity

The biggest demon of most musicians is a feeling of insecurity. It’s the creeping (or blatant) suspicion that you are literally the worst musician in the world — or at least nowhere near as good as you “should” be. It can also manifest as the idea that you’re going to: get laughed at by your peers, be a complete failure at everything you ever attempt, be revealed as a fraud, find out everyone is just humoring you, find out that your doubters were right, end up completely destitute and have to live in a cave, or possibly just spontaneously die the next time you have to perform. It turns out that all of these worries are 99.999% of the time completely baseless. No, you are not that 0.001 percent case where these thoughts are accurate. Bassoonist Georg, who has never actually touched a bassoon and likes living in caves, is an outlier adn should not have been counted.

The thing is that everyone feels like this, at least sometimes. I myself have, at the time of writing, complained at two different people a total of four times in the past week that I am going to end up living in a cave in the North Woods because no one will ever want to pay me for anything because I Suck. This is objectively not true. (You bought this book after all.) It may be a cliche, but there is a lot of truth to the thought that we are our own worst critics. There is no one else out there who knows your musical intent. If your trill doesn’t sound the way it did in your head, you are the only person who knows. Everyone else will think approximately this: “Hey, that was a trill. Cool.” If they’re especially persnickety, they might add “That was a little (better/worse) than when (you/someone else) sang a similar trill.” I don’t think there is a person out there who specifically goes to listen to a performance and thinks “This is awful and this performer is awful,” because most people are very nice. You are the only person there who thinks that you suck.

There are ways to battle insecurity, of course. Every performer develops a set of techniques to reaffirm their own self-worth, to calm themselves down, and essentially talk themselves down from the tree their anxiety has them hiding up. However, trial and error can take a long time, and you are going to need your self-esteem shored up a lot in the next year. With that in mind, here are suggestions from performers in college and beyond for how to manage insecurity.
Focus on things you’ve improved in the past year. When you start to worry about how obviously you’re no good and no one will ever want to listen to you etc. etc. etc., take a deep breath, then list three things you’ve improved in your playing in the past year. You have definitely improved at LEAST three, if not eight or nine aspects of your playing. Be as broad or as specific as you wish. This is about you acknowledging that you have grown and gotten better, so you choose the things on which to focus.
Listen to old recordings of yourself. If you absolutely CANNOT think of a SINGLE THING you’ve improved on in the past year (really? Not even your ability to play a single piece?), then go and listen to recordings of yourself from years ago. Find something you performed in when you were a freshman in high school (or, if you’re a freshman, see if you can find stuff from elementary school!). Go and listen to it, as critically as you can. It will probably make you cringe. That’s a good thing. Know why?
It’s because it shows you how much you’ve grown since then. If you fast-forward ten years from now, as long as you have kept playing, I can guarantee that future-you will listen to recordings of current-you with that same kinda cringey feeling. Because, in ten years, you will have improved so much that your current playing will be unrecognizable. And you will be proud.
Remember that the goal is improvement, not perfection. Music is not a race. Music is not a competition. Music is an art for self-fulfillment and self-expression. Perfection is impossible. Being “the best” is also impossible - there are seven billion people on Earth (and six in space (I checked!)). There’s always going to be someone out there who has practiced a little longer, or harder, or started earlier, or whose fingers are just a little closer to the perfect shape for your instrument. Your goal, then, should be to improve your own self - no comparisons to others, nothing like that.
Remember everyone comes from a different background. That person who sits to you in your ensemble, the one you’re envious of? You can’t know everything about their life. Maybe their parents started them on their instrument at age three. Maybe they haven’t gone out on the weekend in a year and a half because they practice then, or because they work to make up for not working during their practice time during the week. They could have a buttload of debt because of outside lessons. There’s no way to know what advantages or tradeoffs they’ve had to get where they are.
Once you’re at a certain point in life, there’s no way to add something to your life without sacrificing something else that you also like. If someone else practices X amount hours more a week then you do, then they spend X amount less doing something valuable to you - work, sleep, other homework, socializing, recharging, etc. They may simply have different priorities than you, and that’s okay.
Shut down the voice that compares people. Comparing yourself to someone else does nothing for you. Really. Unless you’re actively studying someone’s technique for educational purposes, comparing yourself to that 5th year senior, or that incredible freshman, does nothing for you. When you notice yourself doing the comparison thing, just shut it off. Practice rebuffing that voice.
“Sarah plays really well, yes. When I’ve played as long as she as, I’ll be better than I am now, too!”

Or!

“That freshman plays really well - I’m glad they had the opportunities they did.”

If all else fails, just look at these other people as motivation. Aspire to be as good as them, and use that to fuel your own practice. Just don’t let it spiral into beating yourself up. You’re worth more than that.
Directors have a vision. If you don’t match that vision, it’s not a personal failing. This is specifically in regards to auditions or chair seatings. Every musician has a different style and different technical abilities, and that’s okay. Sometimes your skill in a certain area may be amazing, but your tone just doesn’t match the rest of an ensemble. Or your sight-reading is great, but the director prefers someone else’s musical interpretation. That’s okay. There are ensembles where sight-reading is super important, and where your tone matches perfectly. You just have to find them, and you will eventually.
Make sure to take care of yourself. You can’t practice as efficiently if you’re sick. You can’t improve as much when you’re always exhausted. Trust me - due to an immune system that works about as well as a mall cop, I’ve spent on average eight weeks a school year feeling absolutely gross. I had to take an incomplete with my private teacher the first semester of my senior year of college, because I was so ill I could barely phonate (mono is a big ball of suck).
I’ve been better overall, however, since I started scheduling my sleep and food and socialization times. My calendar has nine hours of sleep scheduled in every night, I have phone calls and coffee dates with my best friends penciled in every week, and food is as regular as clockwork. Why? Because it prevents that nauseous, exhausted feeling of sleepwalking through a ten hour day. Hard days still happen, of course. However, I don’t spend nearly as much time cajoling myself to just keep putting one foot in front of the other anymore. Instead, I’m awake, engaged, and able to complain about things other than how tired I am. Progress!
Read up on Impostor Syndrome. Impostor Syndrome is when your brain’s resident jerkwad is constantly suggesting everyone you know is about to find out you’re a fraud. Who cares about any auditions you’ve successfully done. Who cares how good a grade you got last week. The jerkwad yells that you’re faking everything you’ve ever done, and people are going to figure that out, and then you’re going to end up living under a bridge and charging people tolls to cross it, and then they’ll figure out you aren’t even really a troll, and then you’re going to have join me in the cave in the North Woods and eat beetles and moss.
That jerkwad is a liar. Even I haven’t ended up in the North Woods yet, and I’m pretty sure I should list “Can BS Real Well” on my resume under Skills. You are a real musician - after all, you play music! That’s it. That’s all that’s required to call yourself a musician. I promise.

Rewatching The Force Awakens the other day got me to thinking about some things. Bear with me. As Skywalker men go, Ben is so much like Anakin. Ben is a few years older than Anakin was before his ‘transformation’, but still. Angry, impatient, brooding, short tempered. Dare I say whiney? Three scenes which contrast his stoic power are when he twice smashes the computer consoles with his lightsaber (when he was told the droid had help escaping and when he returned to the cell to find Rey gone) and when he actually yelled like a petulant child to Snoke that Rey is strong with the Force. We all know how short fused Anakin was during his training and when he became a Jedi Knight. Constantly challenging the counsel, his temper flaring when things didn’t go his way. In that respect, they are very much alike.

As a Reylo shipper, I feel this way: Anakin and Padme’s relationship began in harmony, friendship, and love…yet turned to violence, grief, and a bit of hatred on Anakin’s part (as he mistakenly accused Padme of bringing Obi-Wan to destroy him). Kylo Ren and Rey’s relationship may mirrior that, just flipped around. Beginning in violence and hatred, ending in love. We shall see.

I also noticed something very telling during the lightsaber duel at the end. Yes, Ren flung Rey against that tree. But it was only because she attempted to fire the blaster at him. During their fight, I noticed that he never really swung the blade at her, but mostly at her lightsaber to perhaps knock if out of her grip and disarm her. He, as a Master of the Knights of Ren, could no doubt have taken that girl out with one blow - her newfound powers growing or not. It leads me to believe that he couldn’t harm her, for what is to come in their relationship. The writer’s have a plan. He never even rendered a jab to her, such as her arm, leg, etc. which he could have done for good measure just to weaken her or out of rage. They were in a battle, of course. Yet she jabbed him everywhere. The hip/leg, shoulder, face. The icing on the cake, was when the ice shelf fell away and their sabers locked. Come on. He could have pushed that wisp of a girl over the edge with a finger. A kick to her midsection. A blow of breath! But he didn’t. Not only that, he offered to keep her alive to train her. Sure, it would look good on his Galactic resume; turning a force sensative newbie to the darkside. But common sense tells me he wanted to keep her alive for another reason. Even after that, when she gathered stregth to fight him off, he knew he was in trouble. He should have ended it right there, before she grew even stronger in the force. But he didn’t, and it weakened him to the point of her her victory over him.

I don’t think he will too happy seeing Rey again, at least not initially. Sure, he admired her talent and was in awe of her abilities. But she bested him, and neither his inner self nor his Master will let him forget it. He may even grown to dispise Rey before he (hopefully) learns to love her. Again, we shall see.

I can understand why some fans don’t like a Reylo pairing. We all view Rey as the Heroine, and Ren the Monster. Yet the whole entire franchise was founded on the fall of a man who loved his woman so much he turned to the darkside to protect her. How is that different? As far as I’m concerned, (don’t send pitchforks my way) Kylo Ren had a terrible life. He doesn’t look like he’s had a moment’s peace since he was a child. Someone like Snoke can swoop in and exploit that with no problem. I watched through three original films hating Darth Vader and thinking 'I can’t wait until he gets his’. Yet at the eleventh hour, he redeemed himself and I was so happy! Then upon seeing the prequels I was heartbroken for him. So much manipulation on this good, brave man by the dark side. All he wanted was to love Padme. One side of the force told him that was a sin, and the other told him his love would destroy her. Ben Solo is no exception. Granted, he has a LOT of redeeming to do. When Han fell off that bridge I nearly choked. And it was at the hand of his son. But the fact Han cupped Ben’s cheek, letting him and US know he forgave him, makes me believe that we may be able to forgive him, too.

(The final match has arrived at last!! Chivalrous rock-paper-scissors― on three!)

Aqours’ new song― our 3rd single is coming out. That’s already a super awesome thing, it’s happy and it’s the best! But. In that case―. No matter what. There is a question that surfaces― the question of outfits. Aqours’ outfits are of course matched to the concept of the song every time, and Ruby and Riko and I― all the members who are knowledgable about outfits and fashion consult together to make matching ones for everyone.
But when everyone is the same, it’s boring both to look at and wear, don’t you think? So we always change small parts of the design and create 9 different patterns.
But― after all.
When you make 9 different patterns, however cute we make each one, it always makes the problems of good and bad worksmanship, taste, popularity and lack of, and whether or not they suit the member.
In the end, if you ask who wants to wear which outfit, it turns into an outfit battle. Well, of course, what we usually do is peacefully talk it over and decide.
There of course is never a perfect match between the character we have and the character we’d like to project, so we do take into account the other members’ impressions, but.
Like Chika and I this time, both our sizes and images match, and our characters and hopes overlap exactly (cute and a little peppy)― there are sometimes cases like this.
So, in these cases― the time has come!!
A serious showdown between girls!!!!
This calls for a one-round match of rock-paper-scissors!!!!
Now― now, now, now!! Chika and Yohane’s rock-paper-scissors match!!
It’s okay, however much of an unlucky Yohane I am― that handicap will follow through in rock-paper-scissors, sure thing♪
In a chivalrous rock-paper-scissors game where losing means winning― where the winner pays a sacrifice and the loser gets priority― I absolutely have the advantage!!
I’m getting that miniskirt with rock-paper-scissors!!!

Horror Writing: A Monster Is Never JUST A Monster

So I’ve talked a bit already about creating monsters, or ways to make them more frightening - by embracing the uncanny valley and/or incorporating predatory qualities.

But all of that is putting the cart before the horse. Because you can’t write a truly horrifying tale until you know what you’re actually writing about. And, news flash: Horror stories are never just about the things that go bump in the night.

* Throughout my How to Write Horror guides/advice, I’ll be using the term “monster” pretty loosely to mean “the force of evil or danger” in the story. In other words, the horror villain/antagonist. This antagonist is not always a monster in the usual sense - it can be essentially anything, from killer fog to rampaging cultists - but for ease of discussion, monster is the word we’ll used.

So, that caveat aside, let’s talk about making monsters!

She finds him in the Void. [shiro/allura] for @blackpaladinallura; post-s2

Allura spends hours sitting in the Black Lion’s empty hangar for reasons she cannot quite explain. The Lion has remained dull eyed since the Paladins and exited it, and not even Keith had been able to get in, despite what Shiro had said. I want you to lead Voltron. It seems the Lion isn’t on the same schedule, with no yellow glow of life in its eyes. She’s never heard of a Lion’s life being ended because of the loss of a Paladin—she knows it is not even possible, and yet despite the way it mades her hands shake with terror, because Zarkon is dead but the Galra Empire is not, she is almost grateful for it.

If she is mourning, then the Black Lion should be too.

And it is here that she mourns.

###

“Don’t you think that we should—?”

“The princess needs time to mourn.”

“But Coran—”

“Hey, if she’s gonna be all snippy with us, I think we should listen and give her the space she obviously wants.”

“That’s…oddly mature of you Lance.”

“She was pretty close with Shiro, he was like the link between her and the rest of us. She needs time to adjust.”

“Pidge is right.”

“Oh and I’m not—”

“Lance, this isn’t the time. Just leave Allura be. She’s been through enough.”

###

The other paladins avoid her and Allura can’t exactly blame them. She snaps whenever she does speak, even to Coran, and with Shiro out of the picture all of the leadership has fallen on her shoulders. He made relating to the rest of the team so effortless, but how could she connect with four teenagers a long, long way from home?

"Don't go to work today..." for jungkook please 💗💗💗

“Daddy…”

His heart skips a beat and he’s already biting his lip. He knows that tone all too well: the one where her voice gets small, her pitch gets higher, and the pout that accompanies it is obviously there. It’s the voice that he melts for, the one he’d do anything for after all these years, no matter what the consequences were.

“Yes, baby?” he replies, turning back around to face her, noticing how she hasn’t moved. She’s still curled into a ball with the blankets wrapped around her almost as tight as he was holding her earlier when he claimed he would never be close enough to his little girl.

“Don’t go to work today,” she mumbles, and Jungkook can already imagine the tears welling in her big eyes before he denies her request. He wishes this was something he could give her, but this one time he’ll have to tell her no.

“I have to, baby,” he starts, but she cuts him off with her childish grunt as she shakes her head, short arms flailing out before crossing over her chest.

“You can’t! Mommy and I said you’re not allowed to,” she affirms sternly, her pout stronger and gaze fiery. Jungkook’s face scrunches up as he becomes slightly indecisive, his resolve quickly falling to pieces.

“I can’t not go to work, baby. I’ll get in trouble if I-”

“Kookie…”

Again his heart is skipping beats and he’s getting the familiar feeling from a few moments ago as you enter the bedroom, pouting just like your daughter as you intertwine your fingers with Jungkook’s. If this keeps up, he won’t be able to say no.

“Stay home, please?” you mumble, pressing a kiss to his lips as he endures an internal battle. A battle he’s losing, of course. “We can’t have a stay-at-home day without you.”

A low whine leaves Jungkook’s throat as he throws his head back in frustration. You both know how to get to him, and he gives in each time.

“Fine… But just this once,” he surrenders, shuffling back to the bed for the three of you to snuggle, you following close on his heels. Instantly, both you and your daughter break out into the biggest smiles he’s fallen in love with, just like every time before this when he’s said “just this once.”
