batgirl 23

reasons why a black actress should play Barbara Gordon in the DCEU:

  • still not enough women of color in leading roles!
  • DEFINITELY not enough disabled women of color in leading roles. at all. I can’t even really remember the last time I saw a disabled character who wasn’t white??
  • carry on the trend of casting black actors as characters who are white redheads in the comics (as established by Candice Patton, Kiersey Clemons, Keiynan Lonsdale, Mehcad Brooks, and Zendaya)
  • we all agree that the Lego Batman Movie is great right? right. well Babs is Afro-Latina in the Lego Batman Movie and I really think we should roll with that
  • a disabled black woman as one of the smartest and most influential people in a world full of superheroes yes please
  • there’s really no good reason for her not to be
  • let’s do this
  • thank you for your time
Batgirl Vol 1 23

We start off with Cass ready to punch the bad guy, only to realize that he has explosives taped to his body. She radios Oracle for help. Knocking the man out is not a problem, but the idea of defusing the bomb in thirty seconds has Cass stand about two inches tall. She does manage though, and Oracle comforts her about breakfast, telling her that her first bomb was all guess work. Cass doesn’t quite believe her and tries to deflect by… guess what? Training some more! When Oracle tells her that she even got some Lady Shiva footage, Cass requests exactly that. While Cass goes to train, Oracle decides to make a call.

As it turns out, Oracle was calling Batman, who is busy in the cave, but drops what he’s doing to talk to her. Turns out both of them know about Cass’ deal with Shiva and there are less than two months left! Holy cow! And here I thought we’d still have fifty issues to go. Both of them disagree that Cass has a death wish that she needs to get over, but whereas Bruce thinks that Shiva is an opportunity, all Barbara can think about is that not only does Cass want to commit “suicide by Shiva”, but that she also still thinks of herself as a killer. Bruce agrees that a parent’s legacy can be a tough thing to carry, and it breaks my heart to see just how much both of them care for her in their own ways.

We also find out that Bruce is still in denial about Cass actually killing someone. He argues that no one who has ever killed could understand his mission as perfectly as Cass does, but Oracle argues to the contrary: she can understand it because she is a killer, just like Bruce. It’s in that moment that Cass returns from the holo room, having been defeated by Shiva’s hologram. Oracle asks her if she is alright and if she would tell her if she was not.
In both cases, Cass lies straight to her face.

In which I decided that I wasn’t a true bat-doodler unless I doodled something for Batman’s 75th anniversary.

The batfamily’s certainly a lot different now than it used to be 75 years ago!
