basest

Can you? Can you wipe out that much red? Your ledger is dripping, it’s gushing red, and you think saving a man no more virtuous than yourself will change anything? This is the basest sentimentality. This is a child at prayer… Pathetic! You lie and kill in the service of liars and killers. You pretend to be separate, to have your own code, something that makes up for the horrors. But they are a part of you, and they will never go away.

One of the biggest problems with religion is that people stubbornly, insistently reduce God to their own size; they imagine that God loves the same people they love, and that God hates the people they hate. This is not just insidious theology; it’s actually idolatry, because people are just worshiping a blown up version of themselves. So let me say it simply: God’s love transcends all of that.

When your parents reject you, God loves you; when your friends or classmates make fun of you, God loves you; when your priest, minister, imam, or rabbi tells you that you are an abomination, God loves you; when politicians cater to people’s basest prejudices, God loves you. No matter how many times and in how many ways people make you feel less than human, God knows otherwise, and God loves you. When you feel frightened, or abandoned, or humiliated, I hope the unshakeable conviction that God loves you can help hold you and enable you to persevere.

Can you? Can you wipe out that much red? Dreykov’s daughter, Sao Paolo, the hospital fire? Barton told me everything. Your ledger is gushing red, and you think saving a man no more virtuous than yourself will change anything? This is the basest sentimentality. This is a child at prayer. Pathetic! You lie and kill in the service of liars and killers. You pretend to be separate, to have your own code. Something that makes up for the horrors. But they are a part of you, and they will never go away!

If you want to understand a human being, look at his action during a moment of free choice, and you will be surprised. You may see a saint committing adultery, a prostitute praying, a doctor drinking poison. You may see your friend stabbing you and your enemy saving you, and you may see a servant mighty in status by his actions, and a master baser than the basest servant by his works.

Intelligent Americans who are shocked and surprised at the rise of Donald Trump, a fascist demagogue who appeals to the basest instincts in fundamentalists and fanatics, should now be able to understand the rise of radical religious terrorist movements in the Middle East as well.

If, in light of the paranoia and fear in America, someone like Trump is gaining popularity, imagine a land a million times worse, plagued with civil war and mass migrations and continual genocide and carpet bombs and drones. Is it surprising that radical, messianic, violent groups will arise and even gain a modicum of popularity? Stop blaming the religion; blame the political situation that caused such sentiments to go mainstream.

The irony is that Trump needs radical terrorism to get elected, and radical terrorists need Trump to gain more recruits. They each feed off of one another and benefit from one another, while the vast majority of people in the middle, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, continue to suffer at the effects of bigots and xenophobes on both sides.

Director P.J. Hogan said Peter Pan represents Wendy’s fear of adulthood, and the dual casting is a way to highlight how important her father really is. “Mr. Darling is everything that Captain Hook isn’t. Hook is a man who follows every impulse he’s ever had, usually the basest one. He’s a pirate. If he wants it, he takes it. He’s a wicked man, but he has LIVED,“ Hogan said. “And Mr. Darling is a totally constricted man, one who has made a lot of sacrifices, and his children can’t see that that makes him brave. Hook comes across as brave, but is, in fact, not.” x

Imagine if we broke out of these tired old patterns. Imagine if we did something different.

Understand — a better politics isn’t one where Democrats abandon their agenda or Republicans simply embrace mine.

A better politics is one where we appeal to each other’s basic decency instead of our basest fears.

A better politics is one where we debate without demonizing each other; where we talk issues, and values, and principles, and facts, rather than “gotcha” moments, or trivial gaffes, or fake controversies that have nothing to do with people’s daily lives.

A better politics is one where we spend less time drowning in dark money for ads that pull us into the gutter, and spend more time lifting young people up, with a sense of purpose and possibility, and asking them to join in the great mission of building America.

If we’re going to have arguments, let’s have arguments — but let’s make them debates worthy of this body and worthy of this country.

President Obama in the 2015 State of the Union.

There were a bunch of things I rolled my eyes at in this speech, but this passage really stuck with me for both its rhetorical brilliance and its message.

Wholloween Contest Entry

I really really want that book, unfortunately I don’t do cool art, brilliant fan edits, or fantastic cosplay. I write, so I’ll be doing the text post suggestion of what the Doctor would go dressed as for Halloween.

So…

We all know that the Doctor loves dressing up, just look at some of his past regenerations and their outfits. So if one of his companions, one of his earthly ones at any rate, were to ask him to dress up as something ‘super scary’ for Halloween do you know what I think he would go as?

Himself.

The Doctor has traveled the universes for over 2000 years, he has seen life end and begin and the very stars themselves burn out. He has seen the monsters under the bed, the Boogeyman, and the basest of fears for all races. He’s feared for his very life more times than could ever be counted, and he has run in all that time…but do you know why I think he keeps running? It’s fear, it’s always been fear. Fear of himself.

When he runs he finds distractions and snippets of happiness, when he runs he can forget for a little while. Forget that he is the most terrifying thing in all the worlds. In all the galaxies and universes and realities…he is the thing feared by all. For every race saved there is countless more he has destroyed himself. For every world rescued there is one that he has burned.

He is the nightmare that monsters have and the story that all good men fear. He is the Devil to many and an angel who burns all who see him to others. He is death and rage and hate. Out of all the things he’s seen in over two thousand years there is nothing that he fears more than the legend he has become. A legend of fear and rage.

So when Clara comes into the TARDIS and nervously dances around the console, trying to act as mature and discreet as possible, the Doctor will tell her Halloween is stupid. He will tell her it is nothing but drivel and that going around in costumes asking for candy is so human. If only to himself, however, he will admit that he doesn’t need to dress up.

He’s already the scariest monster.

Just some geeky mythology info but your possessive Genji over Sunyatta drawing was really fun and I loved it so much and it actually follows Egyptian Mythology where Ra's soldier and various protector Gods who would accompany him on his sun journey from the sky into the dust to face Apophis were all like this. Set, Sekhmet, Basest, etc. they were all "you want Ra? Ya gonna have to go through us to get him, you big jerk!" So yeah, your Genyatta drawing is reminiscent of that in mythology. Hehe.

AAAA anon- I love!! To read about Egyptian Mythology!! The notion of how Genji is over-protective, loyal and just full of love and worship of his master is just A++++. The man will do anything for Sunyatta, would even die for him- even if he knows that Sunyatta is more than capable to handle things himself. Sunyatta, on the other hand, favours Genji out of all the others. Genji is his one and only champion and he will make sure that Genji knows that by lavishing him with sweet and high praises (amongst other things hehe).

It’s OK, we didn’t want a future anyway…

I still cannot get my head around what happened last night - WHY did so many of my countrymen fall for the hate and the lies and the deceit? A hatred that was propagated by a person that has never shied away from his admiration of Hitler (Nigel Farage), a rich boy with an inflated sense of self (Boris Johnson) and a media that pressed the idea that appealed to the basest instincts of the uneducated, namely the imaginary immigrant horde that existed only in their own minds?

My grandfathers fought Nazism, and although Europe was decimated physically, the unity between nations is what rid the world of that evil and built a cohesive and peaceful Europe. When they came home they built new homes, new hospitals and voted in a Government that gave the people and veterans free healthcare and a protective welfare state (for all his glories in which we will always love him, Winston Churchill wanted to retain the status quo).  In gratitude the post-war Government invited all citizens of the Commonwealth to come and live in the UK as thanks for their service during WWII. They came and enhanced our country and our lives - my grandfather’s would not have this current shambles put in their name.

We now no longer have a Prime Minister, so not just content in bringing in this shower of shite to get elected in 2010, David Cameron now fucks off and leaves this whole situation without any leadership and with truly terrifying alternatives as potential candidates.

I can only hold my head high as a proud Remain voter, and know that in my heart I voted for what was right. My mother raised me properly in that I should not be afraid of people who look/sound/think differently to me, but to be curious and to learn from others and take that knowledge forward in my life. One of my earliest memories is of her being in support of gay relationships at a time when not a lot of people were understanding - “It doesn’t matter who loves who, just so long as the love is real”.

I know this is all so heavy, but I honestly cannot see through the fog at the moment and if any positives can come from this. This is so daunting and devastating to all of us here, and clearly 53% of the electorate cannot see how situations unfold in the long term.

So I’m going to sign off with this - just to make a bad day worse that cunt Donald Trump turns up on these shores, but on the plus side, when Lindsay Lohan  decides to run for political office she is getting my vote! (Honestly, check out her tweets from last night - G.O.D. L.O.V.E. H.E.R)

The thing about “Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster” (specifically, the scene in the cemetery) is that you have all these clear parallels between Mulder and Guy Mann–Mulder even identifying with Guy as he keeps telling his story–but the one moment where they veer apart, where they completely diverge…is the mention of Scully.

I’ve seen people criticizing how Scully was portrayed in the fantasy scene, but I believe it was done that way for a specific reason. Everything that Guy describes since getting bitten–putting on clothes, eating, getting a job, and so on–is described on a surface level. What he experiences, he experiences at the simplest, basest, most primitive level, showing the things that we have to do to stay alive, but that don’t necessarily give us a reason to live. Mulder is searching for that too, but when Guy offers details of a tawdry faux-encounter with Scully, it seems to snap Mulder back. Scully isn’t Scully in Guy’s anecdote; she’s any woman that could’ve wandered into that store and done that with him. Which is the exact opposite of her relationship to Mulder; she is the one, the only person who balances him out. Scully is so sacred and special to him that he’s practically seething at Guy debasing her like that.

That is, in my opinion, the entire crux of what Mulder is slowly realizing, and what we see glimpses of throughout the rest of the episode. That no matter how low and down Mulder gets, Scully is there to bring him back to himself. Her smile and almost nostalgic delight for Mulder’s ramblings illustrate the fact that she loves him for who he is, and wants to help him be the best version of himself that he can be. Guy’s fantasy of Scully is completely devoid of that relationship, of any deeper emotion, which further emphasizes the depth and meaning in Mulder and Scully’s relationship. What we come to understand–what we have seen over the course of the entire X-Files series–is that what helps us to keep going, what steels us in these darkest moments of our lives, is love.

As ridiculous and surreal as this episode was, it speaks a beautiful truth at its core: That there are no two people on this planet (or any other) that Mulder and Scully have a dynamic and relationship with like each other, and how Mulder continues to be able to hold on because of her. So I salute Darin Morgan (that kooky so-and-so) for giving us this love letter to The X-Files and getting us back to that place where we all still want to believe.
