The various species in Ferocactus are often called barrel cacti, and they can be imposing plants in a succulent landscape. Some authors consider Ferocactus rectispinus to be a subspecies of F. emoryi, so its alternative name is Ferocactus emoryi ssp. rectispinus. It comes from the central part of the Baja California peninsula, and its name refers to its straight spines (not hooked like those of some other kinds of barrel cactus), which are the longest in a group renowned for ferocious spines. This is the best floral display we have ever had of this species at the Ruth Bancroft Garden.
