“Sam, I need you to get up high but remain undetected. If Y/N and Romanoff get into any trouble I need you to get in there as quickly as possible. Got it?” Steve ordered, his right hand extended with his left speaking into the mouth piece, a few seconds passed. “Got it, Cap. Tell Y/N I’ll be enjoying the view.”
You chuckled and shook your head, exchanging a look with Steve as he returned your smile. “Leave my girl alone.” Steve quipped, sending you a wink. Romanoff subtly squeezed your lower arm and you bit back a squeal, returning her hold. “Let’s get going.” You said, nodding goodbye to the Captain and Clint.
“Watch our backs, Buddy.” Nat called to Clint right before she set off running. “Sure thing!” He cawed back, cupping his hands around his mouth so you could hear his shouted response- which you couldn’t. Until he buzzed in on the comms, “I’ll be watching your back, but Cap’s got his eyes on something a bit lower- hey!”
You and Romanoff cackled together a moment, then growing serious as you pushed yourselves forward, your target location in sight. There were more hostiles than you’d predicted, but you weren’t worried. You had Sam above you and Clint behind you, both long range in case anything went awry. But you pressed up intimately close to the shadows nonetheless.
Nat made the signal and you climbed up and over the obstacles, unseen, both circling around and taking down hostiles as you moved. A glint of red hair was all the men would see before Nat took them down, an odd sense of pride in your friend swelled in your chest when you met at the designated location. Not a hair out of place on either of your heads. “Took your time.” Nat smirked, reaching over and brushing a bit of debris off your shoulder.
“I was just admiring the view.” You responded with a wink. Nat shook her head, the remnants of a smile playing on her lips, but still managing to react fast enough to pull back from an oncoming hostile that threatened to detect your infiltration. You made the face of a worried civilian as she scowled at you. Your side buzzed faintly, letting you know the rest of the team were caught up and it was about time for you to go to town.
“Party time.” The red haired assassin drawled, unholstering her guns and jumping out from the shadows. “And something tells me its happy hour.”
Twelve minutes of all-out combat. Twelve minutes was all it took to take out all the hostiles in the area, Barnes was on his way over with the package that you’d came for and you were just retrieving the key from the last man that stood, knocking him out with a roundhouse kick to the temple.
“I could do with one of those buttons you know.” You mused, rummaging through the pockets of the knocked out man. Nat hummed in confusion as you continued to search for the key. “You know the one- you press it and it goes ‘That Was Easy.’” You imitated the voice of the big red button and Nat laughed at your idiocy, you continued to search but came up empty.
“I can’t find it on him, Nat. Maybe it’s one of these other bodies.” You offered confusedly. Nat joined you in scratching your heads, unsure of what had just gone on. Something uneasy in the air unfurling, until Barnes jumped down from one of the above ledges, landing perfectly atop the body you were just searching.
“Lost the key?” He teased, looking pleased with himself as he locked the package onto his belt loop. “Break a few ribs?” You asked pointedly, staring at the poor man Bucky had just used as a landing pad. Hostile or not, nobody wants to be on the face end of Bucky’s boot. Bucky opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted by Steve’s voice over in the intercom. “We’ve got a few hostiles on our radar, Sam’s working to locate them. Nothing to worry about, three max. Just letting you know.”
Nat shrugged and made work of searching the rest of the bodies whilst you and Bucky bickered. “Why don’t you go jump on some other passed out body instead of annoying me, huh? How about that Barnes? Ever thought about moving your annoying self somewhere away from me?”
Bucky laughed where he stood, driving his heel into the gravel. “Why don’t you go cry to your boyfriend about it?” He spat, shooting you a venomous look. You heard Nat snort behind you, “What’s that supposed to mean?” You yelled, not sure why he was attacking your singledom whilst he was in the same situation.
“You’re Steve’s girl now aren’t you? Just go whine to him about it, I don’t need to stand here and-”
“What are you talking about?” You spluttered, “Why does it matter what Steve said, obviously it’s just a joke-”
“It doesn’t matter what Steve said!” Bucky shouted back, matching your pitch and anger. “If you want to go fuck my best friend then do it! See if I care!” A vein in his neck was bulging as were his eyes which were showing a barely contained rage inside them.
“Maybe I will! Why would you care anyway? I don’t care if you-”
“Will the pair of you just shut up!” Nat shouted over the din you two had created. “Maybe Y/N is Steve’s girl, maybe she’s not. But it’s clear somebody wants to change that. So why don’t you just-” Nat stopped suddenly, as if sensing something far off. She turned her head slowly to look in Bucky’s direction. The whole thing happened in about three seconds. Nat pushed Bucky, hard, who then fell three paces back, shouting a string of expletives whilst you struggled to comprehend what was happening. You’d just caught the hissed warning “Sniper!” When you fell backwards, the sting of a bullet ripping through your abdominal. You managed a scream, before everything went black.
A/N:Based off prompt that says “‘We have apartments right next to each other but we never talk and I just heard you screaming in your sleep so I came over and now we’re sitting on your couch talking about nightmares’. AU “ but I changed a little bit, hope the author of the prompt doesn’t mind! So, of course, credit to gif owner because I don’t even know how to make a gif.
‘Twas bedtime in Stark Tower, it had been for a while. Most Avengers were dreaming, some even with a smile. The heroes were calm, snug in their beds, and memories of recent victories danced in their heads. However, one Avenger was awake, and for good reason so: their dreams were nonexistent, some may say hollow.
Looking out a wall of windows, you rested your head on the palm of your hand and began to finally doze off. As your head began to fall off your hand, you heard a terrified scream from the room next door. The very room belonging to the newest member of the Avengers: one Mr. James Buchanan Barnes. Realizing that he was having a nightmare, the best thing to do was wake him up. Rushing quietly to the room adjoining your own, you opened the door to find him still asleep. Waking him up may be harder than you think: after all, he is still a soldier. Gently shaking him awake, you braced for him to shoot up and maybe even try to fight you off. And it’s a good thing you did because that is exactly what he tried to do.
“Bucky, it’s me. Bucky! Stop trying to beat me up! It’s me,” you whispered into the darkness, holding Bucky’s arms so he couldn’t punch you. You had fought him in training before, and trust me: it hurt.
Once the former Winter Soldier had finally calmed down, he just appeared to break. Sitting him up and turning his bedside table lamp on, you could see that he either was or had been crying.
“Bucky, what happened?” You asked as it was evident that he was actually crying. It threw you off to see him like this; vulnerable, some may even consider weak.
“I had a nightmare. I dreamt that HYDRA had gotten me again and was turning me back into the Winter Soldier. It was awful,” he said. You could imagine: from what he had previously recounted to the team, that was all he had to tell you for you to know that it was bad. Real bad.
“Oh Buck,” you sighed, beginning to settle yourself in so you could be comfortable in case you fell asleep. “You’re okay now, you’re safe. HYDRA can never get to you again. You’re safe, try to go back to sleep,” you said as you run your fingers through his hair.
“Okay.” Bucky had always had dreams, but nightmares had become more frequent and since he was captured, now happened almost every night. They were all similar, all having one or two villains: HYDRA and/or himself. He remembered all of it. Every thing he had ever done as the Winter Soldier. He had forgotten none of it and knew that he never would. Wrapped up in his thoughts, he never even realized that your breathing had become peaceful and even.
With a low chuckle, he kissed your forehead and reached over to turn off the lamp. With you right beside him, he had one of the best night’s sleep since he could remember, maybe even with a dream or two.
Groaning, you sat up on the bed. You’d passed out again, Tony had just been entertaining you about last weeks antics. The last thing you could recall was him imitating drunk Clint before you fell into darkness once more. This time, a smudge of red hair told you you had company once more. You couldn’t quite focus your eyes, the drugs made you drowsy so you rubbed them sleepily, hoping to wake yourself up. You didn’t need a set of eyes to hear her though.
Opening your eyes that morning was like stabbing them the moment the sun
came into your view. At the same time, a pounding started inside your head making
you groan and letting you feel how sore your throat was. Water. You needed
water. First, you took a deep breath and sat up on the slowly, but you still
got dizzy so you had to lie down again. Damn alcohol.
Judging by the amount of light coming through your window, you imagined
it must be around noon so it wasn’t surprising that you were in bed alone.
Bucky would had been up for hours now.
It took you around three time to get you out of bed without getting
dizzy and still, you didn’t feel too safe on your own feet yet. Slowly, you
grabbed one of Bucky’s hoodies, put on your woolly socks and left the room. As you
went downstairs, you could hear the team talking in the living room. Damn lucky
bastards. Steve and Bucky couldn’t even get drunk, Natasha had too much control
over herself to drink that much and Tony always managed to avoid hangovers, it didn’t
matter how much he drank. Your only hangover partner used to be Wanda but she
was out of town with Clint.
“There she is!” Natasha exclaimed when you made your appearance.
“She has a hangover oh! She’s been
drinking too much!” Tony sang making them laugh.
“Noisy” you mumbled as you headed towards the kitchen without paying too
much attention to their mocking.
When you walked into the kitchen, you went straight to the fridge and
grabbed some water to drink, not even bothering on grabbing a glass. Glasses weren’t
important; water was.
“How are you feeling?” Bucky’s voice said behind you. With a sigh you
turned around to face him. Despite how awful you were feeling, a smile appeared
on your lips as you saw his.
“I think I’m dead”, you replied making him laugh.
“You definitely look like you are” he smirked walking over you.
“That’s nice” you rolled your eyes.
He laughed and wrapped his arms around you, hugging you, so you could place
your head over his shoulder and close your eyes. No. Bad idea. The moment you
closed your eyes, the dizziness came back so you pushed them back open and took
a step away from your boyfriend who looked at you with confusion for a moment,
before getting it.
“Dizzy?” He asked.
“My head is spinning more that after flying with Tony” you mumbled.
“I’m not surprised. You were so wasted last night” he said stroking your
hair slowly. You took another sip from the bottle and looked at him, expecting
“Did I say or do something too stupid?” You asked, not being able to
remember a single thing.
“Don’t worry” he chuckled. “You were adorable actually, telling everyone
how much you loved them” he added.
“Oh God…loving drunk. My favourite” you said sarcastic.
“Actually you said something it surprised me”, he said.
Panicking you looked at him. You knew the big mouth you could be when
you were drunk, so you didn’t even know what to expect when it came to alcohol
and Bucky mixed. Probably it wasn’t something too bad, since he was grinning
like a real idiot.
“You said you wanted to marry me someday”, he said.
“Oh…did I?” You whispered blushing.
It was true though. You loved the man that was standing right in front
of you, more than anyone else in this world. You knew he was the love of your
life, you didn’t want anyone else with you. You wanted a life and a family with
him, but you had always been too scared to bring it up since, maybe, it would
have been so much for him. Apparently, Drunk (Y/N) wasn’t that scared of the repercussions
of that statement.
“Was it true? Or was the alcohol talking?” He asked taking your hand.
“Don’t people say that drunks always tell the truth?” You asked back as
you bite your lip.
“They do”, he nodded with a smile.
“There you have your answer” you shrugged looking down at the bottle.
He took the bottle from your hands and put it away, before grabbing your
chin and making you look up to those piercing eyes.
“Then I do”, he said making your heart skip a beat.
“W-what? Are…are you proposing? Have I proposed? What?” You started
asking confused and suddenly nervous. You did want to marry him someday but you
weren’t ready to take that step yet. He laughed a little and kissed your
“None of it. It’s just a promise…that one day, when our lives are not
this messy or in danger every time we go out on a mission, I will marry you” he
“Really?” You asked biting your lip.
“Of course. Plus, I love how (Y/N) sounds” he shrugged making you laugh.
“You’re an idiot” you said grabbing his head to pull him down towards
your lips and kiss him, but he pulled away way too soon.
“Ok, go brush your teeth. Jeez” he said giving the bottle back to you. “Damn
hangover” he mumbled walking back to the living room, leaving you even more
confused with a bottle of water on your hand. He was weird.
Imagine you dropping something right on the street but when you’re about to pick it up you see someone else laying a hand on your dropped thing. This someone then looks up and makes this face as he sees you.
You told Nat and Wanda everything that had happened that evening, hating the exchange of knowing looks between the pair that only deepened your sense of confusion.
“What are those faces for?!” You screeched, pulling at your hair. “What is going on here?!”
Nat shook her head and Wanda laughed into her hand. “It’s nothing, Y/N. Let’s just focus a minute here.” Wanda nodded and agreed. “Yes, you clearly don’t have the feelings that you thought you had for Steve, so the first thing you have to do is talk it out with him.” You looked at the pair of them, unable to hide the look of dread that ensconced your features. “It’s for the best, Y/N. It’ll get rid of any awkwardness between the two of you, and you know give you a clear head to think about any other feelings you might have for some people.. maybe-”
“Speak to Steve.” Nat cut off, shooting a warning glance at Wanda. You frowned at them, “What are you talking about Wanda? Any feelings I might have? I don’t like Steve, we just established that.”
Wanda smiled a small smile but spoke carefully under Nat’s watchful gaze. “It’s not Steve I’m talking about.” She giggled, watching your face transform into a picture of shock.
“Well I don’t like you either!” You spluttered, causing the pair of girls to explode into laughter. You groaned and let your face fall into your hands, having had no success in shedding a bit of light on the situation. “I’ll go speak to Steve.” You mumbled, hefting yourself up and traipsing away from the intrusive sounds of laughter.
You texted him to meet you in your bedroom in ten minutes and he responded with a quick ‘Ok’, so you busied yourself with tidying your room and making yourself look presentable. You forced down the rising feeling of nervousness that threatened to consume you by playing a bit of music in the background, and before too long there was a soft knock at the door.
“Come in.” You called, fiddling with the stereo and not paying Steve much attention as he awkwardly stepped, concealing something behind his back. You turned to face him with an uneasy smile, only to have it be replaced with a look of shock. As it wasn’t Steve at all- but Bucky.
“Wh-What are you doing here?” You asked, your voice almost a whisper. Bucky cleared his throat and presented the bowl of freshly cut mangoes he’d been concealing behind his back. “I think we need to talk.” Your eyes flitted from the fruits to the tentative looking Winter Soldier as your mind whirred, thinking back on the conversation you’d had with Nat and everything that had transpired in the past few days. “This isn’t a good time actually I just asked Steve to-”
“Steve’s the one that told me to come.” Bucky said, interrupting you with a smile that wavered as he spoke. “And- and Nat.” He laughed, placing the mangos down on your lap. “Can I sit?” You nodded and watched, utterly transfixed as he sat down next to you on the bed. What the hell had been going on? Why did Steve tell him to come down? Why had Bucky been speaking to Nat about you? Why was the man you despised most in the world sat on your bed with you, smiling? And why were you letting him?
“I’m sorry-” you stuttered, “But what are you doing in my room?”
Bucky huffed and shoved a piece of mango into his mouth. “Shouldn’t tal wih mouf full.” He slurred, acting apologetic. You narrowed your eyes at his awful stall tactic but chewed on a mango slice as you waited anyway. The few seconds it took for Bucky to swallow the fruit seemed to be enough for him to collect his thoughts as he turned to you abruptly.
“Why do you hate me so much?”
You choked a little on the mango, taken aback by his question.
“I want to know- why did you take such a disliking towards me in the first few seconds you met me.” Bucky asked again, his eyes staring into yours which grew cold as you thought back.
“I really needed to pee.” You said, earning a confused look but not bothering to communicate your meaning. “But the ladies room was full so I hid in the guy’s bathroom and went about my business. But as I was about to head out-” Bucky groaned as you spoke, apparently recalling the events and conversation that occurred during that first day you’d met. “Being hidden in the cubicle, I was able to overhear every little thing you had to say about me.”
“Not that hot, nothing special- "bet 2 bucks I can get her to go home with me tonight.”“ You recited, holding Bucky in your steely gaze. "That was actually the first encounter we had. And I learnt a lot about you in those first few minutes that helped me decide how to treat you- how you deserved to be treated in those next few moments we’d meet face to face.” You finished, licking the sweet juices left on your fingers by the mango you’d just consumed.
“I’m sorry, Y/N.” Bucky mumbled, looking ashamed, which you found strange. “For what? It’s hardly like we’re best friends, you don’t need to apologise now. There’s no need.” Bucky winced at your words, grasping your hand in his- much to your horror- as you snatched it back. “What are you doing?” You hissed, standing up, ready to send him out your room.
“Y/N I like you.” Bucky breathed out, staring at you with such an intensity that the thought he was joking didn’t even cross your mind.
“What?” You repeated, for what felt like the thousandths time. “That makes no sense- whatsoever!”
Bucky groaned and rubbed at the back of his neck, matching your tone of disbelief. “I know! I know it doesn’t- but I do! I really fucking like you and it’s so goddamn confusing because I’ve never hated someone as much as I hate you too.”
“Ditto.” You interrupted without thinking, exchanging smiles with the nervous man before you, easing the tension ever so slightly. The next time he reached for your hand, you let him. You didn’t know why, but whatever was happening you were seemingly ok with it. You could feel his eyes on your skin, a thoughtful look enveloping his features as you grew sombre.
“I didn’t mean what I said back then.” Bucky sighed, pulling you nearer to him. “I was just being a jerk, I was trying to stop the guys from showing an interest in you and I kinda felt threatened by the way Steve looked at you. I was- I was trying to keep you all to myself but, but we both know how that turned out.” You laughed a little and he looked up at you, a hopeful smile dying to be released. “Kinda had the opposite effect, hu?” You quipped.
Bucky went to pull you close and wrap his arms around your waist, from where he was sat but you resisted. “I-I think this is-”
“A bit unexpected..” Bucky acknowledged. “I actually only just realised how-how I /felt/ for you rather, well, super recently. I think it took for you getting shot right in front of me to realise that if I lost you I would- I would freaking lose my mind.” You inhaled sharply at the revelation, noting how difficult it must be for Bucky to be opening up to you like he was, his eyes cast down and a red hue clouding his cheeks. “Talk about too little too late though, hu? But I- I visited you whilst you were out and Tony said- Tony said you’d be fine.. So I figured maybe I could give it a shot- pun not intended- at just you know, telling you how I felt at least. So I went down to the gym at the time you usually headed down there to do cardio and instead I saw-” this time it was your turn to groan, and you wrapped Bucky’s body in yours, making the move of intimacy he was too afraid to go for. His arms found your waist as you wrapped your hands around his head, playing with his hair from your standing position. “I saw Steve and you- kissing- and I thought it was too late but then you- and I almost- but Nat told me and and so I told Steve and they sort of arranged this whole thing and now.. here we are.”
“Here we are..” you echoed, twirling a few pieces of his hair in between your fingers. He looked up then, hopeful, and your heart skyrocketed in your chest, so loud that you worried he would hear it banging against your ribcage.
He whispered your name before you both leaned in and touched lips in what felt like an explosion of colour and emotion. You were quick to lace your hands in his hair, tugging moans of pleasure from his lips. You pushed him backwards and lay your body atop his on the bed, unthinking, but moved entirely by your intermingling sense of passion. His hands cupped your ass and pushed your closer towards him, causing you to arch your back. Your senses were dialled to a hundred and you were driven wild by the way he bit your lip and moaned your name, the hot and heavy breaths that were exchanged between kisses. The moment shared more intensity than either of you had experienced in any of your wildest embraces.
“I love you.” He gasped, pulling apart a moment to look you in the eye as he professed to you the ultimate truth. As you stared at him with your eyes wide and your lips swollen and your heart beating a mile a minute you realised what you had known all along, what everyone had known- and suddenly it all made sense.
