banqueting hall

I have a deep and abiding love for this screencap from That Scene at the end of episode ten:

So strong is my affection for this single still frame that it’s called ‘Tango Screencap is Best Screencap’ in my image folder, although it could just as easily be called something like “That’s When Viktor Knew” or “I cry” or “LOOK AT IT! JUST LOOK AT IT!!!”

Out of every single solitary frame in YOI, of which there are conceivably tens of thousands, I can unhesitatingly say that this is my absolute favorite, and I will tell you why:

Look at Viktor. Look at beautiful, touched-starved Vitya, completely entrusting Yuuri with the role of not dropping him, strong Yuuri, mysterious Yuuri. Those eyes are so deep that Viktor might drown in them, and he would be okay with that. Yuuri’s arm, wrapped completely around him, warm, solid, God. Yuuri presses his hand flat against Viktor’s stomach. Viktor takes in a gust of air that expands his belly into Yuuri’s touch–hot. Yuuri is drunk, blushing with it, and so close that Viktor can feel his heartbeat, can smell his bodyscent underneath whatever fragrance he’s wearing. It’s the most exhilarating, erotic, inexplicable thing that has happened to Viktor in years, and he’s thoroughly swept off his feet.

Unshown is the shot at the end of the dance where Yuuri spins Viktor off and blows him a kiss, at which point Viktor has to furiously fan himself. Yuuri is far too drunk for this to go anywhere tonight, but someone here must have his number? Maybe they could meet up again at Worlds. Or hell, Viktor could go to Japan, he’s not above an intercontinental booty call.

“I’m going to marry that man,” Viktor tells no one in particular, as Yuuri and his equally drunk coach hobble out of the banquet hall leaning on each other. “I’ll make such a good trophy husband.”

He’s heartbroken when nobody can give him Yuuri’s number. Even more heartbroken when Yuuri makes no attempt to contact him.

Then someone sends him a YouTube link.

heres a prompt if u were interested: neil being oblivious when flirted with constantly while andrew doing nothing, passing by, twirling his racquet is enough to get neil's attention (the rest of the foxes smirk)

“You’re all zoned out,” Matt says in her ear. Dan tips him immediately backwards with a hand to the chest.

“Shush,” she tells him, gritted through the straw she’s worrying between her teeth. She ran out of the watered-down pepsi they’re serving in battered plastic jugs a half hour ago.

“Dan.”

“Shush,” she insists, pressing two fingers to his mouth. She’s watching Neil trying to fill his water cup over at the far side of the banquet hall. He’s hovering in that way he does, like a shark who hasn’t figured out if something’s food yet.

There’s this sweet brown-eyed boy trying to talk to him, possibly the only male cheerleader in the room, certainly the least in the loop about Exy gossip. Dan watches him touch Neil’s arm and Neil jerks backwards into the table, toppling an entire icy water jug so it slops onto the floor and seeps through the tablecloth to the dark wood underneath.

Heads pop up, the boy falls all over himself to pour Neil a new glass, and Neil wanders off, bored.

Dan has noticed that people really want Neil to have a heart of gold. They like the news stories and they want them for themselves. They want the seams showing on his face and the tragedy in his back pocket, and they want to show everyone how accepting they are for finding his scars sexy.

All they really want is his trim waist and his pretty eyes and his vice-cap badge and the way he shoves cameras away and has more history than any twenty-year-old has any business having.

Dan’s seen it all before. The way people like the character you’re playing so much that they want to take you home and open you up and see how deep it goes.

Neil’s worse at knowing when it’s happening. Dan’s a professional. She can see the way their eyes follow him because at least a dozen are always following her too, especially in places like this banquet. They look at Neil, or Dan, and a little part of them expects a show.

She watches Neil walk towards them with his eyes pouring over the room like liquid and finding every crevice, every exit. She looks at Matt.

“He’s doing that thing where he’s making a spectacle but he thinks he’s being very subtle.”

“That’s his whole shtick. I’m fond of it, now.” Matt grins.

“Do you think he actually noticed he was being hit on?”

Matt hums, watching Neil wind through the tables back to the fox—trojan extravaganza at theirs. “I doubt he knows anything about that boy other than the fact that he was in front of him for a bit.”

Yoosung

♥ He begged you to go to a LOLOL convention for weeks and finally you gave in

♥ After hours of walking around you grew bored and horny

♥ Last night he left you on edge as you were about to climax when an important RFA conference call came up

♥ You’ve been edgy ever since

♥ “Please…“ you begged into his ear. For the past thirty minutes you wanted to run off somewhere

♥ Finally he listened

♥ “Couldn’t wait till we got home?”

♥ "No.“

♥ He’d try so hard to take control of the kisses it’d turn you on more, but this poor baby couldn’t keep up

♥Messy neck kisses

♥His wandering hands finally get into your pants and past your panties

♥Trying to moan his name but can’t even speak making him almost self destruct

♥"I’m so close.”

♥ Just as you were tipping over the edge, the door swings open revealing a red head

♥"There you guys are- AAAH MY BEAUTIFUL EYES” Seven plays LOLOL too. Seven wanted to meet up with you guys when he found out you both were going.

♥Seven runs away red as his hair leaving Yoosung more embarrassed than you

♥Still not satisfied till you get home where he makes up it up to you four times

Zen

♥ Zen wanted practice for his romantic lines and wanted it with you so he could make the story come to life, you of course agree

♥ “If you want me then why are you with him?” He says his line leaning closer and closer

♥ Kissing soon leads into make out session in his dressing room

♥ He sits back on the couch and pulls you on top him

♥ Feeling the beast underneath you makes you a mess

♥ Zen grips your waist and helps you grind down on him causing little moans to emanate from you

♥ “I can’t take this…” beast unleashed He groans before flipping you underneath him and grinds hard and fast, hard for you to keep up with

♥ “Ah Hyun~” fuck he gone

♥ This would’ve been a good time to remember Jaehee was stopping by for Zen to sign her new CD

♥ “Hello Zen?” Jaehee’s eyes widen in horror, “SORRY Y/N, Zen!” Before running away flustered

♥ Later, she’d scold you both for being reckless of his image.

Jaehee

♥Knowing Jaehee better than anyone, you know her schedule is so hectic because someone *cough* mista trustfundkid *cough*  who gives her useless projects all the time so you decided to bring her lunch knowing she’d forget to eat

♥ She’d be very surprised and happy and try to explain her current project leaving you confused as ever

♥ She’d try so hard to make you understand

♥  You’re leaning over the papers and get distracted on her lips rather than the cat project she was rattling off about

♥ Swoop, you kiss, taking Jaehee off guard

♥ Kisses so good she forgets where she is

♥ You unbutton her blouse and leave hickeys across her chest

♥ Small Jaehee moans

♥Fogged up glasses

♥ “Jaehee do you have those cat reports I was, Oh,” Jumin stops, “I’ll come back later…”

♥ Jaehee is s u p e r embarrassed

♥ “I’m so unprofessional.”

♥ You apologize with a bubble bath later

Jumin

♥ Jumin would randomly want to throw dinner parties for friends and colleagues

♥ Tonight was one of those nights

♥ You were trying on dresses for it when you put on a beautiful slim fitting, maroon dress that made you look hotter than hell.

♥ “No.” You hear Jumin and see him shaking his head is disapproval

♥ “What’s wrong?”

♥ “Only I’m allowed to see you in stuff like that.” He stated before walking away thinking that was the end of it

♥ It wasn’t

♥ Who was he to tell you what you could and couldn’t wear? After he had ignored you for the past week, being a little tease seemed fun

♥ When guests started arriving you stepped out of your room and began greeting people

♥ You could feel his glare from across the room

♥ “Y/N, you look stunning.” Zen complimented.

♥ “Thank–” Jumin comes out of nowhere bumping into you, spilling wine on you.

♥ “Whoops, silly me,” Jumin tightly smiled before whisking you away from confused Zen, “Let’s get you changed.”

♥ When your alone Jumin attacks  daddy jumin mode

♥ “That.” Kiss “Dress.” Kiss “Was.” Kiss “Expensive.”

♥ “I’ll buy you thousands more.”

♥ Your wine-stained, dress was soon pooled around your waist

♥ Jumin threw your panties across the room

♥ No time for foreplay he is inside you

♥ He starts ruthlessly pounding away

♥ “Hey Y/N I want to ask- AHHH NEVERMIND!” Zen screams and slams the door in record time.

♥ “Jumin, are you smiling?”

Seven/Luciel/Saeyoung

♥ You knew Seven was busy on an important case and wanted to do something special

♥ Trying to think of food you could make was hard

♥ You can’t exactly cook well

♥Deciding on pancakes seemed easy enough

♥ They weren’t

♥ Seven stepped out of his office looking for some Dr.Pepper and saw the kitchen covered in Bisquick and broken eggs

♥ “What happened?“ He’d make fun of you, but he wasn’t that much better at cooking either

♥ "I wanted to make you food, you’re so busy.” You sigh and we’re genuinely disappointed

♥ Seeing this Agent 707 Defender of Justice immediately goes with plan cheer up your girlfriend

♥ "Y/N” He grabs your chin making you look up at him, “All I want eat is you.”

♥ Right before kissing you he’d throw flour in your face

♥ “Really Seven?”

♥ He quickly kiss you to prevent the inevitable war

♥ One swift motion, you were on the messy counter and Seven was in between your legs

♥ Feeling his hardness against you made you even more turned on

♥ “S-Saeyoung.” Hearing his real name come from you… he’d die

♥ Your pants disappeared and he began leaving kisses in between your thighs

♥ He kiss everywhere except where need him

♥ “Don’t tease me~~” You’d pout, making him give in

♥ “I got groceri- Oh dear lord in the kitchen!” Saeran screamed before abandoning the groceries still screaming “The kitchen!” over and over.

V

♥V had an opening for his first photo gallery and was nervous as to if it would succeed

♥You knew it would but it seemed like he needed a confidence boost

♥You knew just the way to do it

♥You took him to the private office in the gallery and got busy

♥He was reluctant at first

♥"Y/N Are you sure? Anyone could walk in…“

♥"I locked the door.” At least you thought you did.

♥Finally he pulled you onto the desk and boy he worked fast

♥Too many kisses to keep up

♥That led into a make up session that got heated very quickly

♥Where’d his pants go ? Where’d your bra go?

♥He was already rock hard and you slide in front him, wanting to please him

♥Right as he groaned when you put him in your mouth the door swings open

♥You hit your head on the desk

♥Girlish scream and retreating footsteps equal Yoosung

♥"My office doesn’t have lock.“ Sudden realization.

♥At least the gallery went well1!1!

Saeran

♥ After months of getting help and gaining trust of the RFA members Saeran was officially invited into the RFA

♥ He helped you so much and the day of the party was finally here

♥When you entered the banquet hall Saeran immediately latch himself on you

♥"Can we leave?“ Ten minutes in.

♥"Please? I’ll make you feel good when we get home.”

♥He was horny and anti social

♥After more of his complaints you strike a bargain

♥"How about we go upstairs for little then come back down.“

♥Didn’t need to tell him twice

♥Once you reach an empty room he is all over you

♥Aggressive kisses, not that you mind

♥He began kissing down your neck until he reached your sweet spot making you moan

♥”Be quiet, don’t want anyone to hear.” he said before picking you up and throwing you onto the bed.

♥Saeran pinned you under him and grinded down leaving you a mess

♥Both your clothes came off at one point

♥Mid make out the door swings open

♥ “Well, this is not the correct room.” Jumin swings right back around and leaves.

♥ “I thought you locked the door!”

♥ “I thought you did!”

♥ Saeran got up locked the door, and continued where you left off.

Outlining your novel scene by scene (Part 1)

Did you ever feel bored midway writing a scene? Or lukewarm? Do you feel like readers will jump full chunks of text?

Well, I used to feel that all the time.

I disliked outline with a passion. I thought it stole the magic away from creation. I thought it would trap my story in a box. Whenever I tried, I had no idea where to start, so I blamed outlining all over again. I would just write the first scene and allow my story to unfold itself. Although it is fun to let your story take the lead, it’s also chaotic.

I realized the importance of outlining on my third book. After months and months of hard work, my story turned out just… boring. Weak characters. A plot full of holes. No defined theme. Useless scenes. And a story that started with a goal, but changed so many times along the pages and accomplished almost nothing. Slow. Tedious. I was frustrated. I had to delete more than half to make it work. Even after rewriting, I wasn’t happy. That project was a major fail.

And failing was good, because, on my next project, I outlined.

I listed all arcs and, within the arcs, all scenes. I was mad. I wanted control. I wanted power. And I only sat down to write when I knew exactly what was going to happen from start to finish. I never wrote something that fast and effortlessly in my life. It didn’t take away the magic of writing, it simply gave me a sense of direction.

Outline is a map. And when you have a map, you have a journey to make.

If, like me, you are a bit lost, here’s how you can create the map for your next novel, or how to outline your book scene by scene. I’ll share with you three techniques, but will divide them into three posts. This is the part one. Or the Map Technique.

I advice you to grab pen and paper, and move away from the computer. Find a comfortable spot, maybe a coffee shop, or by your window. And let’s work!

Before outlining, write down your storyline in one phrase. I’ll be using an example to help you understand this technique. So, my storyline is:

Masked twins fight against a violent dictatorship.

Now, let’s start.

In every journey, we need a departure point and an arrival point. This is essential for a map. And, if it’s essential for a map, it’s essential for our outline. So, create the start (departure) and the end (arrival) of your story. With my example, it goes:

  • Twins have their lives destroyed by the government (departure)
  • They destroy the government (arrival)

Amazing!! Our map is taking form.

What else a journey must have? Milestones. Without milestones, we don’t know how far we are from the arrival. They are essential as well. But how can we put milestones in an outline? Easy. Between departure and arrival, you will list every important arc (or event, or key scene, or plot point) that must happen in order to take the plot from start to end. More or less like this:

  • Twins have their lives destroyed by the government (departure)
    • Their family is destroyed
    • They are taken in by their uncle
    • Uncle and twins plan their revenge
    • Twins find their mask
    • Twins perform small acts of justice
    • They gain the respect of the citizens
    • Government sees them as threat
    • Government tries to erase them
    • Twins perform huge acts of justice
    • They are almost killed
    • Uncle is killed
    • They perform one last act of justice by killing the dictator
    • Citizens claim for democracy
    • Democracy is installed
    • The twins destroy their masks
  • They destroy the government (arrival)

All milestones are placed, nothing too fancy, just a description of what we’ll be seeing along the journey. Good.

From milestone to milestone, we have roads, or sequences of roads. Between arcs, write down sequences of scenes that must happen to move the plot forward. For example:

  • Twins have their lives destroyed by the government (departure)
    • Their family is destroyed
      • Twins live with their father (who is an important journalist)
      • Father is abducted by the government
      • Social worker takes them to lonely uncle
    • They are taken in by their uncle
      • Twins and uncle can’t adjust to new life
      • They are all filled with grief
      • Uncle comes up with revenge plan
    • Uncle and twins plan their revenge
      • Twins trains while uncle perfects his plan
      • Twins and uncle adjust to new life
      • They become a family
    • Twins find their mask
      • Getting ready for their first step
    • Twins perform small acts of justice
      • They destroy factory that uses slave force
      • They kill politician who closed hospitals
      • They kill a famous torturer for the government party
      • They find their father’s file
      • Discover that father was tortured and killed
    • They gain the respect of the citizens

We are almost there…

Because, in every mile of the road, we have landscapes. Scenes are landscapes. And we need hundreds of different landscapes along the journey, beautiful ones, strange ones, unexpected ones… we need scenes. To every sequence, create as many scenes as you need:

  • Twins have their lives destroyed by the government (departure)
    • Their family is destroyed
      • Twins live with their father (who is an important journalist)
        • Father receives a journalism award
        • Twins enjoy the party
        • It’s time to go
        • Father drives them home
      • Father is abducted by the government
        • In isolated street, the car is stoped
        • Two man attacks them and abducts their father
        • One of the twins receive a scar on their face
        • Twins are left alone in deserted street
      • Social worker takes them to lonely uncle
        • Social worker takes them from the hospital
        • Drives them to poor area
        • Leaves them with unknown uncle
    • They are taken in by their uncle
      • Twins and uncle can’t adjust to new life
        • Twins can’t eat
        • Twins won’t leave the house
        • Uncle tries to get information on what happened to his brother, but fails
        • It’s believed that their father died
      • They are all filled with grief
        • Uncle and twins have a sincere talk about father, they tell past stories, they laugh, they cry
        • For the first time, they have dinner together
      • Uncle comes up with revenge plan

You can almost see the story playing inside your head like a movie. That’s the magic of a scene by scene outline. :D

This last step is optional. But it’s a great exercise to trim the rough edges. Under each scene, catalog which character(s) you’ll need, what place(s) will be used, what does the scene accomplishes and ways it can unfold. Example:

  • Father receives a journalism award
    • Characters: Father, twins, father’s coworkers, VIPs
    • Place: Banquet hall
    • Accomplishment: To show that father is a famous journalist that gives no chills for what the dictator says
    • Possibilities:
      • Father is announced as the award winner
      • Speech against the dictator
      • Ends speech by showing his love for his son/daughter(s)
      • Twins are proud (and kind of embarrassed as well)
      • Applause, applause
      • Nice food
      • Beautiful dresses
      • It’s the twins birthday
      • Or it’s Christmas
      • Open hall with garden
      • Fireworks
      • Rich people

Takes time, but, now, you have the most detailed map a traveller can possess. It’s easy to depart, just take a seat and enjoy the ride.

Ever since that night you’ve keep asking yourself. What did you do wrong? Was it the way you looked? Something you said, something you didn’t say? Did he just… hate you?

If anyone had asked you prior to your marriage to Prince Seokjin, you would have never even entertained the notion of him hating anyone. The man just seemed too perfect, not only in looks, but in disposition as well, never one to lack poise, always composed. The few times you and your family had visited him prior to the wedding, he had been nothing but a gentleman.

And certainly it didn’t seem like he disliked you, in fact it seemed to be the opposite, even if there seemed to be some distance between the two of you but you attributed this to the fact that you had not known each other for very long, and had expected things to gradually change once you two had actually wed.

The warm expression on his face as you walked down the aisle gave you a hopeful outlook on what the rest of your marriage would be like. However, it all came crashing down later that night.

The Royal Opera House of the Palace of Versailles is amongst the finest creations of the master French Architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel. Built under Louis XV for the wedding of his grandson, Crown Prince Louis-August (future Louis XVI) and the Hapsburg Princess Marie-Antoinette in 1770. It is the largest palace court theatre in Europe and one of the few surviving. Following a recent $70 million dollar renovation, the floor of the lower seats can once again be raised to the level of the stage and be used as enormous Ballroom or Banqueting Hall. Concerts, plays and ballets are now being held on a regular basis during the Chateau’s Theatre Season and the public can purchase tickets through their website.

It was nice of Sansa to say that she was almost done poking and prodding and adjusting your dress, even if you all knew that it was a lie. Sansa had and affinity for dressing you up, claiming that if she tried it with Arya, she would lose a finger. You couldn’t say that the idea was entirely off base.

The dress was lovely. It looked a bit delicate in comparison to the usual style that ladies favored in Winterfell.  It was somehow different and you’re the same as the dresses that you favored on an everyday basis. Although you had lived in Winterfell for most of your life, your mother and father had lived much farther south.

So, you tended to favor lighter dresses, made of silk and lace in a wide array of colors. Jon liked to tease you that you were the brightest thing to ever live in Winterfell. What you didn’t know is how much Robb silently agreed with him. The dress was white, with layers of gray peeking through towards the bottom. It was lovely, although you had no idea how Sansa had managed such a lovely effect in the short amount of time since she had asked you about making a dress.

“I may have been working on it for a little while before I asked if it was okay,” she said, picking it up off of the bed and motioning for you to change into it. “But I knew that you were going to say yes anyways.”

You laughed, she was right. You had a hard time telling people no, especially when they were doing something so nice for you. After all, the Starks were your family. And if they were willing to put the time in to help you, then there was no way that you were going to refuse. It did make your schedule feel a bit cramped at times, in between dagger lessons with Arya and the boys, knitting with Sansa and tea with Lady Stark, who was forever insisting that you call her Catelyn, there were never enough hours in the day, something you often fought about with Robb.

“Well then, put it on!” Sansa laughed, tossing you the dress and pulling out her needle and thread, claiming that there were a few alterations that needed to be made. Sansa worked in silence, adding a few stitches here and there. And somehow, when she was done, the dress looked even more spectacular. She had managed to somehow make it fit you like a glove at the top, yet have the perfect amount of sway and flow in the skirts.

“Thank you, Sansa,” you said, admiring the skirts in her mirror. If you hadn’t been so caught up in how nice it was for Sansa to make you this lovely dress, you might have noticed the smug look on her face as she admired you admiring her dress. And you might have noticed that you were wearing in the Stark family’s colors. “But I really think that I should go see if your mother needs help preparing-”

“I was downstairs with her all morning. While you were fretting over nothing, I was making sure that you didn’t have an excuse to run away.” She laughed, guiding you over to the chair that was set up in front of her mirror. “Now, you have to stay and let me do something with this.” She sighed, motioning to the braid that you wore every day. Sansa took your braid in her hands, making quick work of fanning it out across your shoulders, running a brush gently through the ends or your hair.

“I cannot understand why you never take the time to style your hair unless I force you to. You know that anyone would do anything for you.” Sansa rain her hands through your hair, twisting it one way and then another, attempting to choose a style for that evening.

“I would rather spend my time with other engagements. And I’m sure that every single person in this castle has at least five things that they need to be doing at any given time. And shockingly, none of them include helping me with my hair.” You laughed, raising an eyebrow at her in the mirror.

“And does one of those things include pretending that you aren’t in love with my brother? Or is that simply a given, considering it is something that you do every waking minute of every day?”

You felt yourself tense, your shoulders locking back into place and your teeth grinding against each other. Sansa, on the other hand, continued brushing your hair into place, humming a soft tune to herself. You wished that you had an appropriate comeback, but you were left to sit there, mouth agape, while Sansa fussed with your hair for longer than should have been possible.

You’d hoped that you would have a bit of time to yourself before the feast that evening, but Sansa had insisted that a bit of rouge had never hurt anyone. By the time that she decided you were ready, the both of you were late.

“A queen never arrives at her own party on time.” Sansa laughed as you hurried down the hall. You hated to be late, and it seemed that the only time you were more than a few seconds late to anything was when Sansa insisted on helping you get ready.

“Then it’s really too bad that I am not a queen.” you reminded her, withholding a glare.

She snorted at you in a very un Sansa-like way, simply brushing past you and breezing easily into the banquet. You, on the other hand, were not nearly as confident. You took a moment to steady yourself, a moment to catch your breath, before stepping into the banquet hall.

The noise and liveliness of the hall erupted around you, pulling you in. You glanced around, taking in the musicians and the dancers that took up most of the space in the large banquet hall. And as much as you didn’t want to admit it, you were elated to see Robb standing with Jon and Theon near the edge of the dance floor.

You gathered up your expansive skirts, making your way along the edge of the room to the boys.

“Well don’t you just look dashing in the Stark colors?” Jon teased you, gesturing for you to do a twirl.

You landed a punch on his arm, not hard enough to actually hurt him, but firm enough to tell him to shut his big mouth, paired with an expression that told him you were going to pretend to be cross with him for a while. “If you must know, your lovely sister made me this gown, and as usual I had no say about the colors. But, I’m sure that it is just coincidence.” You attempted to sound sincere, even though you knew what Sansa was most likely thinking when she was picking out the material.

You pretended to listen to the boys ramble on about one thing or another, but your eyes were scanning the room in search of Arya. You knew that she was not particularly fond of feasts, so you always made a point to seek her out and reassure her, even if it was only for a few minutes. After few moments of searching, you spotted her, slumped into a chair, looking like she would much rather be anywhere else but here.

You felt Robb’s hand rest on the small of your back, attempting to draw your attention away from the very important matter at hand. “Y/N, do you want to-”

“Maybe in a minute, Robb,” you said, already making your way over to Arya, not even bothering to look back towards the sound of Jon’s booming laughter.

“Arya!” you laughed, taking her hands in your own and pulling her out of the chair. “Won’t you come and dance with me?”

“You know that I have been skipping my lessons,” she mumbled, refusing to meet your eyes. Somehow, she was in a worse mood than usual.

“I never said that we were going to make our way through the most boring waltz in existence.” You were already halfway to the band, who looked almost as morose as Arya, which wasn’t surprising when you thought about the music that they were being forced to play. “If this is to be the mood for the entire evening, we are all going to die of boredom.”

You let go of Arya’s hands for a few moments to whisper your instructions to the band. They all seemed to perk up immediately, sitting up in their chairs, the light coming back into their eyes. The tune changed from the sullen one that you had grown accustomed to hearing, to one that was jubilant and full of life. Reclaiming Arya’s hands in your own, your spun her around, prancing around in ridiculous circles until a smile finally graced her lips, and then a small laugh bubbled through, and you knew that your work was done.

You gave her one last smile, twirling her in another circle before stumbling off of the dance floor. All of the spinning had made you a bit dizzy, and with all of the skirts that Sansa had swaddled you up in, you weren’t surprised that you had nearly tripped a few times before you had even made it away from the dancers.

Robb’s hand found the small of your back, guiding you away from the mass of bodies that had swarmed the dance floor. You would have been surprised, especially because you hadn’t thought that Robb was anywhere near you, but he had a habit of turning up when you needed someone.

“What was it that you wanted earlier?” You asked breathlessly, collapsing into the chair that he had guided you to.

“Do you remember when my mother was so angry at us for sneaking into these feasts that she made us attend all of those dreadful dancing lessons?” Robb asked, smiling at Arya dancing with Rickon among the masses.

“Of course I do,” you laughed, recalling the many afternoons you had spent with your slightly nasty dance master. “Your mother was so sure that we would never turn up to another ball again if we had to take those lessons, but you were at every single lesson.”

“Naturally, you were so excited, and there was no way that I was going to miss it when you tripped over your own two feet.”

“If I recall correctly, you were always responsible for catching me after I messed up a new step.” You lazily punched him in the shoulder, but the laughter died in your throat as Robb caught your fist and linked his hand with yours.

“And I wouldn’t have missed it for the world.”

It wasn’t the act of holding his hand in yours that caused your breathing to falter. You had been holding pinkies since you had met, so after that, what was a hand? It was the way that his eyes were staring into yours, unwavering. For the first time in a long time, you felt yourself blushing because of Robb Stark.

It wasn’t something that happened often, the two of you had grown up together, after all. Your mother had been best friends with Cat, and when they passed away, it was no question that you were going to stay with Ned and his family.

You had been quiet when you arrived at Winterfell for the first time. It had only been a day or two since your mother and father had moved on, taken from you suddenly by a terrible affliction. You were assured that your friends would all be waiting for you, but that wasn’t good enough. You wanted your parents.

And even though you constantly reminded Robb of that, he was there for you at every turn. Bringing you a flower he found near a spring, hoping to make you smile, or telling you a poorly thought out joke, just waiting for just a glimpse of the dimples he used to know so well. And as much as you wanted to give him a glimpse of your former self, you needed time. Somehow, even at such a young age, both of you understood. And you had remained solemn, until one afternoon, he heard a giggle echoing from her chambers.

Robb threw open the door to find you sifting through a drawer full of dried flowers, picking them up one by one and examining them. He marched into the room, demanding to know why you had been so sad before. You never had been able to give him an answer, simply handing him one of the flowers and telling him that you were sorry. You never had offered him an explanation for those first few weeks.

“Y/N?” Robb’s voice and both of his hands cupping yours somehow managing to effectively draw you back to reality. “Are you okay?” his voice was soft, almost as if he was afraid to scare you away. He should know better than that by now.

“I was thinking about when I first came to live with you, well everyone. And you worried yourself over making me feel welcome, and you were so confused when you found me with that drawer full of flowers.” You sounded dreamy, still thinking about the days when things felt easier.

“You never did tell me why you kept all of those flowers. Especially when they never made you smile in the first place.” He smiled down at your hands, where his thumb was stroking the back of your hand.

“Because I knew that they were going to make me happy eventually,” You met his eyes, hoping that he understood what you were trying to tell him. “And I was right, wasn’t I?” Robb looked like he was going to answer, but you were finished wasting time moping about when there was a party going on. “Let’s dance, Stark.”

And without another word, the two of you were out of your chairs and headed for the dance floor. The musicians had kept their promise, and the music was lively. You were pleased to see that Arya had dragged Sansa into a group of dancers, and it brought a smile to your face to see that everyone was happy, for the time being. It was rare to stumble upon a moment where someone wasn’t squabbling, and when you managed to find one, you most certainly weren’t going to take it for granted.

MC as a Birthday Present ♡

Yoosung

  • (March 12th)
  • Everyone had been busy on his birthday…except you
  • (He was quite bittersweet about it. He was happy to spend time with you but… but… why didn’t anyone make time for him on his birthday?!?!)
  • So you decided to take him out to a LOLOL con, surprising him with tickets– WHICH WERE SUPPOSED TO BE SOLD OUT, SO HE WAS REALLY SHOCKED
  • He almost cried tears of joy when you showed him the tickets upon meeting up, and jumped to hug you reaaaaally tightly
  • …only to realize what he was doing
  • “Wahhh!!! I’m so sorry, MC, I got a bit too excited…” he apologized, his cheeks so red that it rivaled Seven’s hair. He inched away from you, feeling ashamed of himself
  • After all, he was a strong believer in only acting intimately with your significant other!! More importantly… he really, really liked you… It was kinda embarrassing to act so bold…
  • But you laughed it off, and dragged him by the hand to lead him into the convention center
  • There was SO MUCH MERCH
  • all of which he couldn’t buy
  • He hadn’t been prepared for this, after all…
  • You noticed his teary eyes as he stared hopelessly at everything… and ended up buying him a few charms
  • He also spent about half an hour following cosplayers of his favourite character, and you had to push him towards them
  • Needless to say, it wasted a lot of time but hey, whatever, it’s his birthday
  • When it was time to go home, he honestly didn’t wanna go back… He wanted to spend more time with you. Nervously, he asked, “H-hey, MC… wanna come over to my place? B-BUT NOT FOR ANYTHING BAD, it’s just getting late and you shouldn’t go home alone… a-and I want to spend more time with you…”
  • The last of his words came out as a whisper, his hands covering his cheeks in embarrassment
  • He asked so cutely though. Of course you followed him home :D
  • When you reached the apartment, though, he couldn’t unlock the door for some reason, so he ended up asking you to try. As you did, he began to say, “Uhm, thank you for today. It’s really the best gift I’ve ever received…”
  • You paused in your movement, a small laugh escaping your lips. “But that’s not even my gift! Jumin got the tickets… Hmm, I do feel bad I couldn’t properly prepare a present, but…”
  • You took out a gift-wrapping bow and placed it on your head. “But you could have me instead~?” you joked
  • His heart was going W I L D, gosh what are you doing to this poor boy!?!
  • His eyes narrowed with determination as he grasped at your shoulder. “I’d want you,” he said quietly. “That would be the best gift in the worl–”
  • “HEY, HANDS OFF!” The door flung open, revealing a mad, glaring Zen. “I know it’s your birthday, but there’s a limit to how selfish you can be!”
  • Yoosung gaped at the interior of his apartment, decorated with streamers and banners and presents. Jaehee offered a sheepish smile, “Surprise? Well… Zen kind of ruined it…”
  • Yoosung quickly removed his hand from your shoulder, already regretting his bold actions from before. “I-I WASN’T DOING ANYTHING TO MC!!”
  • With an irritated look, Zen crossed his arms intimidatingly, his muscles bulging, a sadistic smile upon his face. “I think it’s time for some birthday punches, don’t you?”

Zen

  • (April 1st)
  • “Do they seriously think we don’t notice them?” Zen sighed, pressing his face into his hands. “Grrr, I thought I’d finally be able to have some alone time with you…”
  • You tilted your head, “Alone time…?”
  • His cheeks flushed red as he tried to cover up his mistake, “N-no! But I mean, it’s just, I’ve hung out with everyone else separately before and uhm, I was just excited to hang out with the new member too?” Despite his acting skills, he found it difficult to act and well, essentially lie, to you…
  • “It’s okay, we can still do whatever you had planned… I’m sure they’ll tire of us soon,” you offered a gentle smile, easing him of his worries. He nodded in consideration of that, and returned the smile.
  • Unfortunately for the both of you, they didn’t get tired of you. In fact, they had somehow managed to prank Zen at every street you guys crossed…
  • There was an entire street that suddenly advertised cats and had cat fur outfits on display, making Zen sneeze the entire time… then there were bouquets of flowers thrown at Zen which wasn’t bad, except that they were wrapped with catnip which attracted seemingly HUNDREDS of cats??! …not to mention random flour flying through the air, landing near the two of you…
  • “They’re such children!” Zen fumed, narrowing his eyes. Despite the glare, he still looked handsome, captivating all the women (and even men) around him. Whispers spread amongst the crowd, and there was suddenly a mob sent after them after someone screamed “It’s Zen the actor!!”
  • (run omg)
  • You spent the entire day running from pranks and fans, finally taking a break in a dark alleyway… wait, dark? The two of you stared up at the stars overhead. Well, that was a birthday wasted.
  • Zen plopped on a trashcan, sighing heavily. “I’m sorry you had to go through that because of me… It must’ve been really annoying for you… ugh, and this had to happen even after you so graciously offered me your entire day to spend with me. I’m so sorry…”
  • He looked so guilty even though it wasn’t his fault, you felt your heart aching for him. Pranks like this happened year after year, the pranks of April Fool’s Day preceding birthday wishes.
  • “Cheer up, Zen! I don’t really have anything to give you right now, but… you can do anything you want with me!” you beamed.
  • He stammered, “W-wait, anything I want…?”
  • Control the beast. Control the beast. COntrolcontrolcontrolcontr-
  • “Yep! If you want someone to clean up your house- since you live alone, or tend to your every need for a day, I’m here!” you said with determination, pointing to yourself.
  • Zen let out a deep breath. Haha, riiight…
  • He buried his face into his hands. Goddammit, you were just too cute.

Jaehee

  • (December 28th)
  • She hadn’t expected anyone to do anything for her birthday O_O
  • “MC, th-thank you for doing this,” she murmured softly, cheeks flushing a light pink as she gazed at you with nothing but gratefulness in her eyes (much to your disappointment, that is)
  • “You don’t have to thank me~” you grinned, swinging an arm around her cheekily. “I love you after  all~”
  • She brought a hand to her lips as she let out a soft chuckle, murmuring to herself quietly, “So this is what it’s like having a best friend… It’s nice to be cared for.”
  • Choosing not to comment on that, you laced your fingers through hers, gently tugging at her hand to drag her towards the train station. “Come on!” you exclaimed with excitement
  • The two of you sat next to each other on the train, your head resting on her shoulder as you shared your music with her, the pair of earbuds connecting the both of you. The train moved quickly towards the mountains, every bump on the tracks causing the two of you to press closer to each other. Although you didn’t mind, a light blush coloured Jaehee’s cheeks
  • She shyly stared at your reflection in the window, watching as you gradually nodded off. She gently stroked your hair, soothing you to sleep…
  • You woke up just in time for your stop, pouting at Jaehee for not waking you up earlier. The two of you arrived near the peak of a mountain just as the sun began to set.
  • “Waaaahhh, I lost so many hours of being able to talk to you by falling asleep!! Why didn’t you wake me?! I wanted to spend all of your birthday with youuuu…” you groaned. Your cute antics made her laugh, and you found yourself smiling with her, noticing how delighted she looked.
  • Her soft, gentle gaze made you blush a bit, and you quietly walked beside her on the mountain trail. It was a silent walk, albeit not uncomfortable. Soon, you neared the warm red-orange hues of the sun, finding an opening behind the trees.
  • From where the two of you stood, you could see all the way below the mountain… the surrounding forest of colourful leaves, the stream flowing into the glacial lake… all under a pinkish-purple sky with rays of light raining upon the view.
  • It was mesmerizing, and you reached for her hand, grasping it tightly as you admired the natural scenery together…
  • While it only lasted a few minutes, it had been a beautiful experience for both of you.
  • “Thank you, MC… It’s really nice to see something like this, especially since I’m cooped up in the office most of my days. Although, it does make me appreciate today even more… I’m glad I got to experience it with you. Oh… you don’t happen to have another gift, do you? Haha, I feel like I’ve already received so much from you,” Jaehee murmured, blushing slightly.
  • You fidgeted with your fingers, then pointed at the ribbon in your hair. “I actually wore this b-because I don’t really have a gift… all I can offer is myself…”
  • Although she stared at you with a lost expression, inside, her heart was H A M M E R I N G. Even more than it does for Zen!!
  • Her fingers trembling, she gently pulled you into a hug, thinking to herself, ‘MC’s too cute and innocent… oh, I really don’t want anyone else to see her like this… I just… want her all to myself…’

Jumin

  • (October 5th)
  • Why.
  • The one word repeated itself in your mind over and over again like a mantra, beads of sweat rolling down your face as you tried to maintain a smile.
  • There you were, sitting across from none other than Jumin Han in a high-class… EMPTY banquet hall. He had reserved the entire place just for the two of you.
  • “J-Jumin… today is your birthday… shouldn’t I be treating you?” you asked him nervously, eyes shifting as you felt awkward in the empty vicinity.
  • He cocked his head in confusion, “Am I not allowed to take you out somewhere of my choosing on my birthday?” (sigh, he just doesn’t know how to express that he wants to spend time with you)
  • “Well… when you put it like that…” you frowned, still feeling  extremely awkward and guilty.
  • “Then there’s no problem, is there?” he chuckled in amusement, a brief twinkle in his eyes.
  • Luckily for you, the tension simmered down to nothing as the hours stretched on and the conversation flowed through.
  • The sky was still a fair azure blue when the two of you stepped out, despite the nearing autumn. “Jumin, I still don’t think it’s right that you’re treating me when it’s your birthday… Let me make it up to you, pretty please?” you jut out your lower lip slightly, staring up at him with pleading eyes.
  • “Hm… what do you have in mind?”
  • You smiled in relief, then instructed Driver Kim where to go in whispers, making sure Jumin wouldn’t find out. “Hehe~ It’ll be a quick drive. Put this on, I don’t want you to find out where we’re headed!” You handed him a black blindfold, and his breath hitched.
  • ‘What I wouldn’t give to tie that around MC’s eyes and—‘ he caught himself, shaking off the perverse thought. Instead, he offered a strained smile as he let MC put it on him, shivering slightly from the feeling of her fingers in his hair.
  • The duration of the ride was fairly quiet, as you kept whispering details of the location to Driver Kim. When you led Jumin out of the car, laughter and music found its way to his ears. He furrowed his eyebrows, not quite recognizing these sounds. You finally removed the blindfold from his eyes, allowing him to see the festival you’d brought him to.
  • His eyes widened, “This is…?”
  • “A fireworks festival to celebrate the full moon! It lasts the whole week, and I’m just glad I could bring you here… I just thought it’d be nice to try something new,” you explained, blushing shyly at the end.
  • Jumin felt an overwhelming adoration for you welling up in his chest. He had never been to a (commoner’s) festival before… let alone celebrate his birthday in any other way than a fancy dinner…
  • As excited as you were to drag him around the booths, he ended up dragging you around, his curiosity getting the best of him as he took interest in each stall, feeling amazed by everything.
  • …It was almost sad to see that, by the end of the festival, he still hadn’t won a single thing from any of the game booths. His lips were curled into a permanent pout, eyebrows furrowed in determination to shoot at the stuffed cat.
  • BAM!
  • His mock-bullet flew towards the cat! …and knocked off its bow instead.
  • The old man managing the stall shook his head in pity, “You’ve got some terrible aim there, young lad… Tell ya what, I’ll just give this bow to you. Try again next time, buddy.”
  • Jumin stared at the bow with a frown, wondering what the hell he was even supposed to do with it. He turned his back on it, stomping off like a kid. (Zen: hah, what a sore loser!)
  • You chased after him, grabbing the bow before you left. He seemed to be heading back to the car where Driver Kim was waiting, and you grabbed his arm before he crossed the road. “Jumiiin, it’s the first thing you’ve won from a festival, shouldn’t you cherish it more?”
  • He scoffed, “I have no use for it. Keep it.”
  • “Hmmm. Theeen, since I don’t have a gift for you today…” You clipped the bow to the front of your shirt. “You could have me instead? Hahaha~ Just kiddi-”
  • His face had neared yours in the middle of your sentence, eyes dark with desire at your words.
  • “Don’t make promises you can’t keep, MC…” he said huskily, staring into your eyes like he was about to devour you.
  • Your cheeks flushed red at his words, backing away slightly. At that moment, Driver Kim pulled up to the curb and you just L EA PED inside.
  • Startled, Jumin stares after you, bursting out into laughter. Secretly, he thought to himself, ‘MC never fails to amuse me… If she was mine… would we able to spend time like this all the time? Hm.’

Seven

  • (June 11th)
  • “No.”
  • “Yes.”
  • “I said NO, dammit, don’t get another duck!”
  • Seven pouted as he turned his head towards you, his hands still operating the claw machine. “But MC, all of the prizes are just sooo cute!!”
  • “There’s no difference,” you deadpanned.
  • He gasped, HORRIFIED that you would say that! “This one is smiling! And this one has sunglasses! And this one has its tongue sticking out… and this one has a wink… What do you mean, there’s no difference? I’m disappointed in you, MC, tsk tsk.”
  • Before you could even begin to protest, he winked, “Besides, it’s MY birthday after all. And you’re my slave for the day~”
  • At that, you shut up. How did this happen again?
  • Ah, right. It all started when you had jokingly—ahem, let me say it louder for the redhead in the back, JOKINGLY said that you’d be Seven’s birthday gift.
  • -Flashback-
  • Your bedroom door swung open and CRASHED to the floor, awaking you immediately. “GoOd morning, MC, it’s my BIRTHDAY!” Seven yelled, blowing into a toy trumpet as he waltzed around your room. It was 7 in the morning. jfc seven, NO.
  • Not long after you got dressed, he began pestering you for a gift. Truth to be told, you had no idea that it was his birthday, so you didn’t have anything prepared… (He’s a hacker, he keeps all his personal info to himself! It honestly wasn’t your fault)
  • You rolled your eyes, taking a red pen and drawing a ribbon on your wrist. “Well, you could always have me as your present instead…”
  • His eyes shone, and you already regretted letting those words leave your mouth.
  • Back to present time, you were walking around the arcade, holding all of Seven’s prizes in large bags…
  • Grumbling, you muttered, “I still don’t know why I have to do this…”
  • He paused in his steps, cocking his head to face you as he smirked, “Would you have preferred to be a different kind of slave for me, hmm, MC~?”
  • Cue the jaw dropping.
  • And the blush ;)

Architecture (Part 11): Assyrian Palaces

Temples with & without ziggurats were built at Assyria.  But by the late Assyrian period, palaces were much more important & more numerous, emphasizing the monarchy’s importance.

In the 800’s BC, Ashurnasirpal II restored & enlarged the city of Nimrud, and had a palace built within its walls.  The north-west wing was the most public, and at the north was a large public outer court. A suite of apartments (including for the women) was on the east side, and a series of large banqueting halls on the south side.

This would become the traditional Assyrian palace plan.  Palace remains at Nineveh, Nimrud and Kouyunjik, built during the 700’s & 600’s BC, have similar plans, and are built on elevated platforms, surrounded by terraces.

Ashurnasirpal II’s palace.  Three huge doors on the outer court’s south wall led to the throne room, which was long & narrow, and ran nearly the whole width of the courtyard.

A flight of steps led to the palace, and the main entrance was guarded by lamassu – winged stone bulls made of stone.  They protected the gates from evil, with a lion’s fierceness, an eagle’s far-sightedness, a bull’s strength, and a human’s intelligence.

Lamassu at the palace entrance (destroyed by ISIS in 2015).

Below is a drawing of what an Assyrian palace may have looked like. This palace has an elevated, buttressed terrace, a flight of steps lined with carved figures as homage to the king, an open upper storey to admit light, and a roof ridge with battlements.

Assyrian bas-reliefs depicted powerful, life-like men and animals. The sculptors were knowledgeable of anatomy & movement, and how to carve it; at the same time they stylized the subject for ornament.

Orthostats (large stone panels) were arranged in tiers on high walls, and as friezes on low walls.  Fierce beasts, bulls, griffins and lions were common subjects.  Sometimes the king was shown killing them, to demonstrate his bravery, and symbolizing the triumph of good over evil.

Pavement slab from the North Palace at Nineveh.  The outer border is decorated with a pattern based on the lotus flower, similar to Ancient Egyptian ornamentation.  Narrow bands of circular rosettes divide them from the inner border of stylized flowers, and another stylized flower in the centre.

Sculptured ornamental border from Nineveh.  It depicts lamassu and stylized plants, which are perhaps a sacred tree.  Borders of flowers & animals were sometimes painted on ceiling beams, with gilding & precious stones to add richness & contrast.

Sculpted panels in the ruins of the Palace of Nineveh show some of the architectural details made by the Assyrian builders (or possibly Greek builders).  On of these details was voluted capitals (capitals with a spiral, scroll-like ornament on top), and they looked similar tot he Greek Ionic & Corinthian capitals, which also had volutes.

An Ionic capital on the Treasury Building (Washington D.C., USA).

The Obelisk of Divanubara (Nineveh, c.800 BC) was built with sun-baked and kiln-burned bricks.  It tapered towards the top, with stepped layers on top.  Carvings and inscriptions showed that it had a funerary purpose.

Silent (Soulmate!Thomas Jefferson - Part One)

(Also, apologies, I don’t know the tags for this fandom, sooo… This is a thing right?)

Soulmate AU where the first words your soulmate says to you appear on your arm. Written in third person. Starts in James Madison’s POV then shifts to Thomas Jefferson. No warnings other than Thomas has a bad attitude.

Part Two     Masterlist

There are three facts about Thomas Jefferson of which James Madison was absolutely certain: 1) Thomas Jefferson does not have a soulmate. 2) Thomas Jefferson doesn’t want one. 3) It’s probably for the best that he doesn’t.

James had known Thomas for many years now, and he doubted any living person knew the man better. Even so, it didn’t take an expert to know Thomas’s view on the subject. Any person with eyes could look down at Thomas’s arm and see it lay bare of words. Any person who’d had a conversation with him on the subject could see he didn’t want to find any words there, and every person who’d ever encountered Thomas, even in passing, had likely come to the same conclusion as James. It was for the best. The universe was saving whatever poor woman would have been latched to him from a life playing second fiddle to Thomas’s ambition and hubris.

Looking across the banquet hall, James could see Alexander Hamilton, who had been deep in conversation with Thomas for much of the afternoon, coming to those same conclusions. Hamilton had been among the first batch of people to approach Thomas when he arrived, and James barely salvaged a moment to warn Thomas of the situation before he dove into a lengthy discussion with the young immigrant.

James couldn’t decide whether he was amused or terrified. The pair seemed to be amicable enough at the moment, but that could change in a flash. Hamilton and Jefferson were both as stubborn as each other, and they were both fully equipped with sufficient verbal ammunition to break out into an all-out war right in the hall. James had a sneaking suspicion the only reason the two had yet to shed any blood was due to the close proximity of President Washington, the host of tonight’s affair.

“Someone should really go and separate those two before they realize how terribly opposed their views are. I’d hate to get any blood stains on the new rug.” James glanced up to see it was Martha Washington who spoke.

Smiling James offered a hand out to greet the woman, “I do believe that will happen regardless of our intervention, ma’am.”

Martha gave a simple nod in the direction of his hand, and James’s hand dropped, realizing both of hers were occupied. In her left Martha held a nearly empty glass of wine, and in her right she held a hand, not her husband’s either.

James studied the younger woman attached to Martha’s side with interest. She had a death grip of Mrs. Washington’s hand and looked to be cowering behind the older woman. To her credit, Martha also appeared to be shielding the girl, who looked about ready to sink into the floor. The forlorn expression on her face and the tightness on Martha’s told James that neither of them particularly wanted the young woman to be there. Whether that was because Martha did not care for her to be at the banquet or whether Martha cared to protect her from it, James could not be sure.

“Mrs. Washington, I do not believe I’ve had the honor to meet your acquaintance,” James addressed the unknown woman with a slight bow of his head, “James Madison.”

“Oh, of course,” Martha flashed a forgetful smile James would have believed had he not seen it before. “Mr. Madison, this is my dear younger sister, (Y/n) Elizabeth Aylett.”

“Pleasure to meet you ma’am,” James bowed his head.

The woman, whom he now knew to be (Y/n) Elizabeth), gave a one-handed curtsey in response and a rather hesitant smile. Her grip on Martha’s hand loosened slightly, but she made little move to approach him any closer or step out from behind Martha’s guarded stance.

“Has your sister been introduced to Mr. Jefferson or Mr. Hamilton? Perhaps we could make their acquaintance on that pretense,” James suggested, waving a hand to where his oldest friend stood, still in deep, uninterrupted discussion with the new Secretary of Treasury.

“James!” A familiar voice boomed as a hand came down firmly to clap James on the shoulder. “I am so glad you could come.”

James turned to face George Washington and extended a hand, “Mr. President, did you really think I would miss a welcome banquet for my oldest friend?”

George accepted James’s hand and shook it firmly. “Your oldest friend who has spent the majority of the night politely refuting every word that has left the mouth of Secretary Hamilton.” George gave James a pointed smirk. “I dare say those two are cut from the same cloth.”

“I don’t know if I would go that far, sir.” James nodded his head in the direction of the pair, who seemed to have been quietly escalating their disagreement. “Even if they were, I doubt either would admit it. However, I do think they are both stubborn enough to continue this fight until someone forces them to cease blows.”

“Oh let them stew for a moment more,” George waved off James’s concern with a light chuckle. “They both work best when they’re angry. Perhaps if we leave them to it long enough they’ll build the whole country while trying to outdo each other.”

James did not share George’s confidence in the pair of men. He didn’t know who he was more concerned for. He’d seen Hamilton work. The young man had an unmatched determination, and put to work it could do some serious damage. However, Thomas Jefferson was not a man to cross, probably a fourth fact to add to his list if he ever felt like expanding it. There had been more than one occasion over the course of their friendship that he found himself thanking the heavens Thomas was on his side not against him. Nevertheless, James allowed George to table his concerns and the conversation to steer away.

“You know James,” George glanced down at the younger man’s sleeve covered arm with a knowing smirk. “Mr. Burr is here tonight.”

James’s hand instinctively went to his arm. Under the sleeve, the first words from his soulmate, Mr. Burr speaks very highly of you, Mr. Madison. “I’m afraid I have already met all of the women you have invited tonight, not including Mrs. Aylett.” He gestured to Martha’s sister. “Though I appreciate your concern.”

“Well no danger of that tonight, Mr. Madison.” Martha piped up, still holding firmly to her sister. “Perhaps the next banquet,” with a kind smile she added, “We’ll see to it Mr. Burr is invited to all of them.”

“How kind of you, Mrs. Washington,” James nodded politely.

James waited silently as George turned to address Martha about the time dinner would begin. His eyes wondered over to (Y/n), who also seemed very uninterested in the conversation. Her eyes had wandered away, and her guard had dropped slightly as she looked around the room. James followed her gaze to Jefferson and Hamilton who had since been joined by Aaron Burr, the same Aaron Burr who would one day introduce James to his soulmate.

‘No danger of that tonight,’ James reminded himself of Martha’s words, harsh but true. It occurred to him at first that she may have spoken prematurely. He knew everyone else in the room, but her sister had yet to speak a word to him. It didn’t seem likely, given that (Y/n) probably did not know Aaron Burr and had no reaction herself to his first words to her. Even so, Martha had said it with an odd sense of finality. If James could not see the looping cursive peeking out from under (Y/n)’s sleeves, he’d have assumed Martha was so assured in her statement because her sister had no soulmate. He supposed, now, it must have been because she knew the words on her sister’s arm, or that her sister had already found her soulmate. Though if that was the case, why was he not here?

A million possibilities were running through James’s mind. There wasn’t anything else particularly interesting to do that night.

“Gentlemen, gentlemen, didn’t anyone tell you the war was over?” The voice of Aaron Burr echoed across the hall. Clearly James had been too soon assuming the night would be uninteresting.

George caught James’s eye. “Let’s go end the squabbling; shall we?” George offered an arm to his wife, and (Y/n) reluctantly dropped her death grip on Martha so her sister could accept.

The married couple led the way, and James followed after them beside a meek-looking (Y/n) who still refused to speak. The poor, quiet girl was walking into a lion’s den with Burr, Jefferson, and Hamilton. If she was hesitant around him, he could only imagine how badly she’d be spooked by the other three men. James made a concerted effort to circle around to her other side and place himself between her and the other three. He’d thought he’d been subtle with the gesture, but the sheepish smile (Y/n) sent his way told him otherwise. His only reply was to nod in confirmation.

“Mr. President,” Aaron Burr gave a bow of his head to the approaching group, effectively halting all conversation between Hamilton and Jefferson. “How are you this evening?”

“Quite well, Mr. Burr. How are you? Enjoying the festivities, I see,” The president looked between his two secretaries admonishingly.

Hamilton, at least, had the respect to look scorned, “My apologies, Mr. President. Secretary Jefferson and I were simply discussing…”

“Enough of that,” George waved away Hamilton’s concerns. “This is meant to be a celebration. Mr. Jefferson has only just returned to us from France. Let’s leave our work to the office, shall we?”

“Of course, Mr. President.” Thomas Jefferson gave a respectful bow of his head. “Thank you for hosting this dinner tonight. I appreciate your hospitality.”

“And we appreciate your assistance. I look forward to working with you, but for now let’s enjoy our evening.” George addressed the pair of them.

Hamilton bowed his head and turned his attention from the group. “If you all will excuse me, my soulmate is speaking with Mrs. Adams and appears to want my attention.” He went off with one last nod to the President.

“You haven’t even made it into work yet, and the two of you are already finding things to bicker over,” George’s tone was teasing, but there was a certain sense of warning to it that none of the group missed.

“I wouldn’t go so far as to call it bickering, merely a difference of opinions unrelated to work. I’m sure we’ll be able to put it aside in future work.” Thomas politely refuted the President’s concern.

“Unrelated?” James cut in. He knew both men well enough. They had plenty of points of contention related to politics. He couldn’t imagine they would have had enough time to make it through all of them and find something else to argue about.

“Soulmates, of course,” Thomas waved his hand in the direction Alexander had retreated. “He brought up the topic and seemed rather disgruntled by my stance on the subject.” Thomas was being very careful not to launch into his opinion again. He doubted this group, Martha and the woman he didn’t know in particular, would appreciate it.

“Ah yes,” George mused. “Alexander mustn’t be familiar with your perennial bachelorhood.”

“I was married once, you know,” Thomas pointed out to George with a teasing tone that in no way seemed to disagree with George’s statement.

“It happens sometimes,” Martha seemed to miss the tone in Thomas’s voice and took him more literally. “You know, people getting married outside of soulmates.” Her eyes trailed to the other woman in the group, standing between George and James and trying desperately to avoid eye contact with everyone in the room.

Thomas’s eyes trailed over the girl. “Who might your friend be, Mrs. Washington?” The question was addressed to Martha, but his eyes were firmly on the woman, expecting the answer to come from her.

She made no move to answer or even acknowledge Thomas’s presence, and Martha piped up immediately in response. “Mr. Jefferson, this is my sister, (Y/n) Elizabeth Aylett.”

“Can she not answer for herself?” Thomas fought the urge to roll his eyes when he looked back to Martha.

“As a matter of fact -” Martha sputtered out, agitation bubbling up in her expression.

“Mr. Jefferson,” George warned coolly, all pretense dropping from his voice.

Thomas wanted to scoff. He couldn’t get a word out today without being berated, first by Hamilton, then Burr, now the Washingtons. This banquet was supposed to be in honor of his return, and all he wanted to do was leave. Any other day he would have been the epitome of cordial, but that Hamilton had wound him tight. He wanted none of this.

Turning to (Y/n), he practically growled out his first words to her, “What? Are you mute or something?”

Everyone froze for just a moment. Aaron Burr was looking at him aghast. James’s expression was simply exasperated. George Washington had the stern expression of a no-nonsense general, and Martha looked a mixture of angry and shocked at his side. The woman, (Y/n), simply looked resigned. She was meeting Thomas’s gaze now, but the look in her eyes was not that of a woman scorned. It looked more like a woman broken.

The look in her eye was all Thomas needed to realize he’d made a mistake.

(Y/n) turned to her sister and made a quick gesture, wiping her fingers twice over the palm of her outstretched hand, before she turned for the door.

“Wait, I-,” Thomas reached out to the woman, ready to apologize. Instead, his hand was snatched away.

When he looked back, he was expecting a disappointed James or maybe a wary Aaron Burr. He was certainly not expecting to have to look down into the eyes of an absolutely livid Martha Washington. “You… You…” She was trying desperately to form sentences, but her anger was suppressing her speech.

“I’m sorry, deeply sorry.” Thomas looked away ashamed. “It has been a rough evening. I didn’t intend to take it out on your sister.”

“Why are you apologizing to me?” Martha’s voice was growing louder with her building rage. “You should be apologizing to (Y/n)! Not just for this, for decades of hating herself! Do you realize how much damage you’ve done to her?”

Now Thomas was confused, very confused. “I beg your pardon, ma’am?”

“Every day she wakes up to those words burned into her arm! Ashamed of who she is and knowing you’re ashamed of it too!” Martha’s ranting had attracted attention from a good portion of the banquet hall now. George reached out to his wife, trying to rein her in.

Thomas tried placating the irate woman. “I don’t understand what you mean, Mrs. Washington. Perhaps, I should just go find (Y/n) and…”

George took the matter on himself and pulled his wife from Thomas, stepping up close to the man so none of the now eavesdropping guests could hear his voice carry. “Your words are on (Y/n)’s arm. You must be her soulmate.”

“I don’t have a soulmate.” Thomas replied almost mechanically, turning his arm slightly so George could see the blank expanse of skin.

“Well yes,” George conceded. “If (Y/n) is your soulmate you wouldn’t have words on your arm. She’ll never speak to you… She is mute.”
