banksia cone

Banksia sp.

Banksia is a genus of Australian plants, often distinguished by their big flower-cones. The genus contains a lot of different plants, ranging from plants with red, white, yellow and even purple flowers. Sometimes (see photo) the plant has Coniferophyta-like leaves, but is a Angiosperm.

Not all Banksia species have the cone-like flowers, a lot of them have hanging flowers with a reduced axis. The flower seen above is however a cone-like structure, consisting of small flowers with styles, and later anthers.
