balance of work & play

2016 - Quick Tips

With a new year on the horizon, I think back on various tips and wisdom I’ve learned to utilize in 2016.

Here they are in quick-tip form!

  • Keep project files very well organized. Have a common sense structure easy to remember.
  • Track hours worked, noting start and finish times. Pay attention to how often distractions and breaks occur.
  • Frequently make TO DO lists. Being able to cross out completed tasks is deliciously motivating.
  • Balance work and play. Always be progressing, but allow yourself to take worry-free vacations when stress is high.
  • Find the audience that shares your passion, instead of targeting one beforehand.
  • Don’t neglect health! Quality food, sleep, and exercise has a massive impact on performance. Who woulda’ guessed?
  • Put good effort into art and visuals. It’s really important – even more than you think!
  • Utilize the power of color at every opportunity. Moods, contrast, light, feedback, etc.
  • Temporary “programmer art” is useful, but try starting with good fidelity.
  • Befriend a wide diversity of minds to consistently bounce ideas between.
  • Throw away preconceptions when diving into the unknown.
  • Have fun. Seriously.

Freezing over Fashion

TITLE: Freezing over Fashion
GENRE: Fluff

SUMMARY: There was no way you were going out looking like a marshmallow….even if temperatures were below freezing outside.

If there was one thing that you prided yourself on, it was being more practical than the other people your age. You were not obsessed with finding a partner to marry and settle down with, and you also knew how to balance work and play. You deposited half of your check directly into the bank every time you got paid and gave your parents half of what was left, leaving you with only a fourth of the total you were given. You knew your responsibilities and performed them well, and were on very good terms with everyone at work…except for one person. (You honestly had tried with the head coordi unnie, but you were 100% she just hated your guts, so yeah…)

You were definitely a practical person…except when it came to one thing.

You were a sucker for it.

You weren’t completely like the typical fashionista who just HAD to fill their closest with the newest trends, no matter how ridiculous the look may be, but you still had a bad habit of buying whatever article of clothing or accessory that had caught your eye. You also would stubbornly ignore the weather, bad idea, choosing to wear whatever you wanted to, regardless of whether or not the elements would agree with you. (Most of the time though, what you wanted to wear would actually work out with the weather, so it wasn’t that bad.)

Today, you weren’t so lucky. When you had dressed to go out with the boys, you had opted for an ensemble that unfortunately was very much so not below-freezing temperatures appropriate. Did you look amazing? Of course you did. Were you about to get frostbite? …most likely, yeah.

Hearing a tsk sound, you couldn’t help but turn around towards the source of the noise. You were honestly half-expecting the head coordi unnie to be there with something else arbitrary to scold you about, but to your surprise, relief, and embarrassment, a certain Daegu rapper stood instead.

“H-hello,” you greeted him, internally wincing at the stutter caused by your chattering teeth.

“D-do you need help with a-anything?” you continued on, trying your best to keep your head held high even though it was clearly apparent that he was currently judging your choice of clothing.

“If anyone needs help, it’s you,” was his reply with a wriggle of a gloved finger.

Honestly, the sight of you was making him feel even colder. There was no way you were comfortable in that outfit. Sure, he wasn’t going to deny that you looked really (really, really) good, but you also looked like you were a few degrees from becoming an ice sculpture.

“Shouldn’t you know about how to layer clothing, being a stylist and all?” he asked, not really asking, but more like making a jab at your lack of layers.

As much as you wanted to glare at that double-sided compliment (or was in an insult?), you knew you were in no position to do so.

“In my defense, though,” you add, trying to come up with something to wipe that smug smirk off of the older’s face, “as you mentioned, I’m a stylist, and therefore, winter is no excuse to be looking like an over-fluffed marshmallow.”

With a nod of your head, you crossed your arms over your front, and no, it wasn’t because of the cold blast of wind that just decided to hit you. With an amused but slightly muffled chuckle, you (lightly) glared at the man who…was currently unwrapping his scarf from his neck?

“Wait, what are you doing?” you asked, surprised at the action.

Sure, you weren’t dull at all. You knew where this had the potential of going…but you kind of didn’t want to admit it to yourself yet? You just wanted to see where things went (and maybe fangirl juuuuuust a little bit on the inside?).

“What does it look like I’m doing,” he retorted back, rolling his eyes at your shallow question.

You huffed in response.

“Okay, fine, whatever,” was the best response you could come up with at the moment.

As he walked those few steps until he was directly in front of you, you had to remind yourself that he was just being nice, that’s all. He didn’t want the company to have to go through all the trouble of finding and hiring a new stylist because the old one was too weak towards the pull of aesthetics, that’s all. All he wanted to do was make sure you didn’t get frostbite and die out here in the cold, that’s all. (More like, that’s all you kept telling yourself in order to reign in the less rational side and much more imaginative part of your being?)

“Isn’t that much better?” he prompted, nodding his head proudly at the sight of you all bundled up in his (really, really warm and super nice smelling?) scarf.

Sure the sight was a bit comical, seeing at the scarf was much too big for you, causing you to look like you’ve been engulfed by some sort of fuzzy entity. (He’d most definitely be needing a picture of you later, not taken by him of course, because he wasn’t creepy like Seokjin or Hoseok or Taehyung, always taking pictures of whoever it was that they found adorable or whatnot)

“Mhmmm…” was all you could let out, seeing as the man had covered most of your face with the said scarf.

You really hadn’t thought that just one article of clothing could make such a big difference, but here you were, already feeling much warmer than you did beforehand. With a blush (that honestly really wasn’t from the chill), you bowed down, thanking him.

“Don’t worry about it,” was his curt reply, gesturing you to follow him to the outdoor trailer where the rest of the staffs and members were.

Just before leaving however, he had one more thing to say.

“There’s no point in freezing over fashion.”

I keep saying I’ll start Dragon Age Inquisition when I’ve finished my work but it turns out?? there’s always more work?? and that maybe part of time management??? is realizing that you have to set realistic parameters on work and play to maintain a balanced life of study, money making, and virtual smooching????? instead of just being like “when All Work is done forever, at last I can do All Play”

T H E Avatar is perplexed. Wyrms? Hunters? What were wyrms? Perhaps they were large worms, like the sand worms that she had encountered in deserts before. Such creatures were definitely dangerous, but she didn’t think they merited being hunted down, then again, other worlds functioned differently from hers.

N O” she says, shaking her head. “I haven’t seen any of those around, I’m sure-”

I’ve been feeling the flow today 🔮🌊✨

Like most of us my life balance of work and play, rest and nourishment comes and goes, sometimes it’s better and sometimes worse. When you’re self employed it can be incredibly hard to feel able to take the time to maintain any kind of equilibrium but it is also essential. My personal mission for this year is to listen more. As with everything else in life it’s all about building good habits and routines and establishing what works for you 🔮💖✨

if you pull ur hair back and tie it up like ponytail or slick ur hair back too often, and you didn’t part your hair before, then eventually ur hair would part on the middle, or near the middle. the scary thing about doing that to your hair is eventually you might have an obvious bold spot. it’s not like a totally bad look. if you’re aiming for some sort of retro or 90s appearance.

your scenarios are amazing?? i love them so much ? ?? would you be albe to do a scenario with noya and his smol v shy s/o where he s changing shirts or something and she catches a glimpse of his bruises from volleyballand she gets all stressed and worried about him and just mumbles for him to be more careful and they cud d l e and whatnot? <3

Thank youuuuuuu!!!! I’m so sorry for this taking so long and for changing up the prompt a little, but I hope you’ll enjoy it regardless!! <333

For a volleyball team gunning for a chance at nationals, sanctioned days off were few and far between, and they were generally spent alone. So, it was even rarer for the entire team to have a vacation together. But, both Coach Ukai and Mr. Takeda believed in balancing work and play, and it was easy enough to convince the team to band together for an outing to the beach. That weekend, the bus that usually delivered them to competitions drove down the highway, illuminated by the morning sun and flanked by a salty ocean breeze. Everyone was buzzing eagerly in their seats. Tanaka was teasing Hinata about the time the middle blocker threw up in his lap, Sugawara and Daichi chatted with Asahi towards the back, and Kiyoko and Yachi shared a few snacks as they laughed and talked about school. Listening in on their conversations, you smiled as you surveyed the bus. Although not an official member of the volleyball team, you were far from exempt in the tight knit family, especially when considering who your boyfriend was.

Life is a

Life is an opportunity,
seize the day, live each day to the fullest.
Life is not a project,
but a journey to be enjoyed.

Life is a gift, accept it,
enjoy it, and be happy with it.
Life is a challenge,
but challenges can always be overcome.

Life is to be lived,
not to be dreamed.
Life is a wonder,
if you sit back and be thankful.

Life is a decision each of us makes,
to be happy or sad.
Life is a time
for new beginnings and endings.

Life is a balance,
take time for play not just work.
Life is a joy
for those who are optimistic.

Life is a bundle of possibilities
if you just look for them.
Life is a meant to do,
not to regret.
Life is no bed of roses
but life is what you make it.

Hideki Ishima ‎ “One Day"1971 Japan Prog Psych ex- Flower Travellin ‘Band man solo album.

Solo album of the Japanese musician, who played in many of the infamous group of «Flower Travellin 'Band». There Ishima been more calm and balanced playing music. This work is more like a mild blues-rock with elements of psychedelia and small overhangs in psychedelia and progressive. Good composition, excellent performance. In all this is accompanied by guitar virtuoso proven associates: his colleague «Flower Travellin 'Band» drummer Joji Wada, vocalist and Harper Ken Narita (ex- «The Beavers»), keyboardist Katsuo Ohno (ex- «The Spiders») and other professionals. Sings itself Ishima (mostly in English, with the exception of the last track), he also took over and the bass guitar……….

Hideki Ishima (石間 秀機 Ishima Hideki?, born 21 March 1944 in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan) is a Japanese musician, known primarily for his work with Flower Travellin’ Band. A guitarist and sitar player for nearly forty years, he now exclusively plays the sitarla, an instrument he invented in 2000 that combines aspects of a sitar with an electric guitar.

Ishima started playing guitar at 19, at the behest of a friend who wanted to be in a band. His first group was Jarōzu (ジャローズ) in his native Sapporo shortly after graduating high school. He moved to Tokyo and formed the group sounds band The Beavers in 1966, who had released four albums and one single but had not had major success.

Ishima began playing sitar at 24, after researching Gábor Szabó at the suggestion of a woman and learning that the jazz guitarist also played this instrument he had never heard of. He taught himself from Ravi Shankar’s 1968 book My Music, My Life, looking up the Japanese translations for the English words.

In 1969, while in the blues band Mystic Morning with Joe Yamanaka, the two of them were scouted by Yuya Uchida for Flower Travellin’ Band. When they went on hiatus in 1973, Ishima recorded the solo album One Day and joined a group called Trans Am. After a few years off, he followed this with the Donjuan R&R Band with Kenichi Hagiwara. During the 1980s he was in Co-Colo alongside Kenji Sawada and Nobuhiko Shinohara, before being fired.

Ishima quit guitar in 1990, citing money problems. After a 40-minute sitar lesson from Manilal Nag during a trip to Japan in 1998, Ishima became a student of Nag’s Japanese apprentice.

He made a comeback in 2000 exclusively playing the sitarla. That year, he recorded the album More-ish with the multinational group Pythagoras Party. The improvisational instrumental group View was formed in 2007.

Any Japanese rock fan worth their salt knows The Flower Travellin’ Band. As guitarist for that unit, Hideki Ishima helped create one of the most distinctive guitar albums in rock history, 1971’s "Satori.” His buzzing, limber lines gave the record its shape and made an impact that is still being felt today. Especially in the West, where “Satori” has justly been branded as not just a lost classic, but perhaps the lost classic, acting as the de facto entry point to anyone serious about educating themselves on Japanese rock music. Imagining Japanese rock without “Satori” is like imagining western rock without Jimi Hendrix’s “Are You Experienced.”

But when the Flower Travellin’ Band went on hiatus in 1973 (they did not break up, as Ishima-san will be quick to point out,) the endlessly inventive guitarist dropped off western radar. During that period, he continued to make exceptional work with bands like Co-Colo, Trans Am, Pythagoras Party, and the Donjuan R&B Band, as well as backing up vocalists like Flower Travellin’ Band’s Joe Yamanaka, and occasional Akira Kurosawa actor Jinpachi Nezu (“Ran,” “Kagemusha.”)

Now, with the Flower Travellin’ Band off hiatus, Ishima is back in the spotlight. He’s also got a new improv unit called View, and exclusively plays the Sitarla, a sitar/guitar hybrid of his own invention. In February, Ishima-san sat down with Jrawk to discuss gifts from God, the state of Japanese rock, and resurrecting his old band….

Balancing Work and Play

I have spent countless days trudging through school and work with the “waiting for Friday night” mentality. Having the knowledge that I am going out with friends at the end of the week days ahead has made my weekdays drag on, and has distracted me from doing the best work I could possibly do. At the same time, it has made my “playtime” more enjoyable, with the anticipation building for days. However, is this time that we spend having fun worth the sacrifices that we make in our work?

Modern Worshippers: Djehuty [Requested by thevampireniko]

There’s piles and piles of books and notes all around on almost any subject you can think of; history, science, art, mechanics of machines, gambling probability, mathematics and half a dozen different languages. They crave to know more about anything that catches their attention. It’s hard to pin them down in a crowd but if you know they’re everywhere, someone with a knowing smirk, a gleam in their eye as the launch into their favorite debate about politics, nerds who spill facts about video games and comics and TV shows and book series like they wrote it themselves. It’s amazing how they keep it all locked away yet still seem to know everyone around them, balancing work and play like it’s nothing. There’s energy drinks in the fridge and they know the best late night coffee shops for a quick jolt and a stimulating conversation.

Capricorn - The Goat (December 22nd - January 19th)

Your element - Earth

Your ruling planets - Saturn

Your stone - Garnet

Life pursuit - To be proud of their achievements

The sign of the high roller, Capricorn is regarded as the zodiacs top, but also quiet, life and business achievers. But, there are two very different types of Capricorns.

The first is represented by the mountain goat, always climbing higher and higher; never content until reaching the top. The second is the garden goat, with little adventurous spirit or ambition-happy to remain within a small domain, refusing to budge unless it is pushed. Either type of Capricorn, however, is patient and persevering. They reach their goals because they know the longest journey commences with a single step and that the first step is always the most difficult.

The one thing a Capricorn must always try to do is balance work with play; otherwise they can become too one-sided and work can replace true personal emotional fulfilment. Continually climbing the eternal mountain of success, Capricornians rise to the occasion when faced with a new task or deadline. Even if something comes to a grinding halt, their ambition to reach the ultimate keeps them moving forever onwards and upwards (prompted by the strict influence of ruling planet Saturn). Although conservative and cautious, Goats are willing to try unusual approaches on their road to success in business or in love. Romantically, they desire a permanent relationship with someone who’ll give them the affection they crave (and often neglect to give themselves!)

The rulership of Saturn - the planet representing responsibility, structure and hard work - ensures that Capricorns in their truest of expression, are ambitious, practical and superb organizers. Although many Capricorns are borderline workaholics, this doesn’t necessarily make them dull or gloomy! They have an offbeat sense of humour, which seems to erupt at the most unexpected moments. Their motivating force in life is success, money, status, authority and - although many might not admit it - love. By nature Capricorns are cautious when entering a new love relationship, but once they feel ‘safe’ with their partner, the cool exterior melts away to reveal a sensitive and loyal heart beneath. As a friend, Capricorns can be relied upon to provide the strongest and most sympathetic pair of shoulders in the zodiac…
