There has been a lot of buzz regarding Jesse Williams and a petition demanding that he get fired from Grey’s Anatomy for his speech at the 2016 BET Awards. This petition has been circulating and to this date has reached over 5,900 signatures. The number of signatures has increased since this article was originally posted.
Erin Smith, the creator of the petition believes that Williams’ dialogue was “hate speech against law enforcement and white people at the BET awards”.
If you have a critique for the resistance, for our resistance, then you better have an established record of critique of our oppression. If you have no interest, if you have no interest in equal rights for black people then do not make suggestions to those who do. Sit down.
C: This year’s BET awards performances and speeches served as a reminder for me how amazing, excellent and brilliant African Americans are. It’s not that I had forgotten but that just was such a good revision. And it’s not just that award show. EVERYTHING AAs touch turns into a masterpiece in every way. As an African, I’ve heard several AAs say they wish they had a culture like Africans supposedly do and that blows my mind that AAs are really made to believe they have no culture by others. That’s another form of oppression to invalidate a people’s set of shared experiences.Culture is values and art and attitudes and systems of belief passed down generation to generation and African American culture is one of the strongest most durable and enviable ones shaped by centuries of shared experiences. Your CULTURE is arguably the most copied and coveted in the world. You start trends. Your music, art and overall culture is imitated but never duplicated. It forces thought, it entertains, it teaches. You redefine things. You have a culture and it is beautiful and rich and full and worthy of being acknowledged as such. Don’t EVER let anyone take that away from you ever. I love y'all 💜💜
