“Severus. Severus, are you still awake?”
The whisper came from the bed next to him. Severus’ jaw had fallen when they first had been shown the dormitory, never before had he seen such lavish beds. But now in the dark, he laid nestled in underneath the blankets, staring at the unfamiliar ceiling of the canopy above him.
He was finally here.
“Yeah”, he whispered back, rubbing his eye with the palm of his hand.
He was met with silence, he almost laid down again, thinking Sirius’ had fallen asleep.
“Are you excited for tomorrow, when classes start?”
Oh, was he! Before he could reply, an annoyed voice from one of the first-year boys on the other side of the room exclaimed:
“Bloody hell, can you two be quiet? Some of us are trying to sleep!”
“Sod off, Wilkes”, Sirius called back.
Severus hold back a snort and laid his head back on the pillows. Then he heard a rustling from Sirius’ side and the sound of bare feet on the floor. His bed sank down by the weight as he peered up and was met by a huge grin wrapped in a blanket sitting on his bed.
“What are you doing”, Severus whispered hesitantly.
“What do you mean what am I doing, we’re friends, aren’t we?” Sirius replied in a hushed tone, still grinning, slumping down next to him, pulling his blanket with him. “Now move over and tell me which class you’re looking forward to the most!”
“But”, Severus stammered confused, but a bit pleased as he made room for the other boy. “We’ve only known each other for a couple of hours”, he continued, trailing off.
Sirius huffed impatiently.
“We’re here to make friends - to make connections and allies”, he said, sounding like he recited something from his head. He smirked. “Also, you seem to be not as big of a prat as Wilkes and the others.” The last words he said loudly, turning his head towards the rest of the room.
A grumbled noise was heard from the other side of the room, confirming that Wilkes was still awake.
The two boys in the bed stifled their laugh with their hands, looking at each other with mirth. When they had managed to calm down, Sirius rolled over, looking straight up with gleaming eyes.
“I can’t believe we’re here”, he breathed in amazement.
Severus studied the other boy’s profile and felt how he couldn’t get rid of the giddiness he felt in his entire body. He had a new friend.
“Neither can I”, he finally whispered back.
