I gotta say, I may not always have Azerbaijan in my tops, but they know how to do a song!

You are always on my mind, always in my heart And I can hear you call my name on a mountain high Always on my mind, always in my dreams I wanna hold you close to me, always, all the time - AySel and Arash (Eurovision 2009 Azerbaijan)

Regardless of whether Bokuto is feeling excited about life or low about his abilities, he is still a great friend and/or lover. He is always ready to push himself and other people to their maximum power, and he always excels at encouraging his teammates. Overall, he can be caring towards people, especially towards you. Close or far, happy or sad, you are always on Bokuto’s mind, and he never fails to be concerned about you. Even though he can be a little wild sometimes, he is very passionate, and it takes a heartfelt song like this to play through his headphones to bring attention to his feelings and soothe him. After some revelations, Bokuto will never ever want to let you go.

Azerbaijan 2009

‘Always’, performed by Aysel and Arash.
Composer: Arash Labaf, Robert Uhlmann, Johan Bejerholm, Marcus Englof, Alex Papaconstantinou. Lyrics: Arash Labaf, Robert Uhlmann, Elin Wrethov, Anderz Wrethov

With Aysel and Arash, Azerbaijan were hoping to replicate the chemistry of the 'older man / younger woman’ that used to be Italy’s special Eurovision skill. If they waited a year, they could have lifted from Paula Seling and Ovi’s ’Playing with Fire’. Instead they somehow managed to find the awkwardness of ’Miracle’.

Thankfully Arash Labaf has a significant amount of skill in songwriting and production, and the energy of ’Always’ shines through a rather hit and miss shouty presentation on the Russian stage.

The flow of the song covers the rough vocals on stage, and while the 'embarrasing Dad’ factor of Arash is present, he plays it with enough of a cheeky wink that he gets away with it. What I find surprising is that Aysel is not the pivotal performer on stage - this is Arash’s song, he carries it, and Aysel doesn’t make any major mistakes.

A strong third place feels higher than you would expect, but with Rybak and Yohanna soaking up the points in Gold and SIlver, it’s not a huge surprise.

Semi final - Points: 180. Placing: 2nd.
Grand final - Points: 207. Placing: 3rd.
