Matt Axelson was born on June 25, 1976, in Cupertino, California. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on December 28, 2000, and completed basic training at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes, Illinois, in March 2001. After completing Fleet Antisubmarine Warfare Training in April 2001, Axelson went through SEAL training, Airborne training, and SEAL Vehicle Delivery Team training before being assigned to SEAL Vehicle Delivery Team ONE at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, in May 2002. PO2 Axelson deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in April 2005, and he was killed in action during Operation Red Wings on June 28, 2005. Matt Axelson was buried at the Glen Oaks Memorial Park in Chico, California.

His Navy Cross Citation reads:

For extraordinary heroism in actions against the enemy while serving in a four-man Special Reconnaissance element with SEAL Delivery Vehicle Team ONE, Naval Special Warfare Task Unit, Afghanistan from 27 to 28 June 2005. Petty Officer Axelson demonstrated extraordinary heroism in the face of grave danger in the vicinity of Asadabad, Konar Province, Afghanistan. Operating in the middle of an enemy-controlled area, in extremely rugged terrain, his Special Reconnaissance element was tasked with locating a high-level Anti-Coalition Militia leader, in support of a follow-on direct action mission to disrupt enemy activity. On 28 June 2005, the element was spotted by Anti-Coalition Militia sympathizers, who immediately revealed their position to the militia fighters. As a result, the element directly encountered the enemy. Demonstrating exceptional resolve and fully understanding the gravity of the situation, Petty Officer Axelson’s element bravely engaged the militia, who held both a numerical and positional advantage. The ensuing firefight resulted in numerous enemy personnel killed, with several of the Navy members suffering casualties. Ignoring his injuries and demonstrating exceptional composure, Petty Officer Axelson advised the teammate closest to him to escape while he provided cover fire. With total disregard for his own life and thinking only of his teammate’s survival, he continued to attack the enemy, eliminating additional militia fighters, until he was mortally wounded by enemy fire. A champion of freedom, Petty Officer Axelson will be remembered for his self-sacrificing actions in the continuing Global War on Terrorism. By his undaunted courage, fortitude under fire, and unwavering dedication to duty, Petty Officer Axelson reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for the cause of freedom.

I could send this manuscript off as my final draft right now OR I could wait another day and add a page about the store of one Mrs. Axelson of Ladysmith, BC, who broke through a line of cops with an axe to free her husband from jail after he was arrested for attacking scabs during the 1912 coal miners strike. I am literally in love with this woman and completely enamored of this story. Accounts describe her as a “stout, Amazonian woman” and when she was arraigned in court for attacking cops and busting open the jail with an axe the super condescending and insulting prosecuting lawyer tried to prove that she was “simple” by goading her into singing, which she did only to reveal that she had a trained, beautiful voice, and everyone watching the trial in the courtroom joined in to sing along with her and then gave her a rousing round of applause.

Pif: so are you gonna draw Mrs. Axelson decapitating a cop

Me: She didn’t actually decapitate anybody, I don’t think she even really hurt anyone with the axe.

Pif: Aw.

Pif: So she didn’t chop a cop in half diagonally

Pif: like a sandwich at a fancy place

Pif: It wasn’t like there was a restaurant across from the police station and there was a chef trying to decide how to cut a sandwich

Pif: and he saw her cut a cop in half and was like, Eureka!

Pif: I’ll call it a club sandwich, because if she hadn’t chopped that guy in half, she would have clubbed him with the handle of the axe, but as it was she did chop him in half!

Me: no

Me: that’s

Me: that’s not what happened

Me: like, ever

Fact: The best way to beat the summer heat is to strip away your clothes. Unfortunately, there’s only so many layers you can take off…unless of course you’re in the privacy of your own home or at one of Upstate New York’s nudist retreats!

Upstate is full of nudist—also known as naturist—resorts, camps and clubs, not to mention several locations where nude bathing and sunbathing are endorsed or generally acceptable.

It’s important to note that these locations are not intended for lewd behavior and peeping Toms. In fact, that type of activity is generally grounds for removal. They are simply secure places for people and communities who enjoy nude recreation.

That said, here they are, laid bare, in one convenient list!

WARNING: Some of the sites have photos that are not safe for work. They have been marked (NSFW) in the links below.

Nudist/naturist specific resorts, retreats and camps

Empire Haven, Moravia: Empire Haven invites you to get away from it all at this relaxed, casual and friendly nudist park in the Finger Lakes. Lounge in the pool, get in touch with nature or play a game of skins vs. skins volleyball.

Juniper Woods, Catskill: You can free yourself at this 65-acre serene nudist park and campground in Greene County. This family oriented, clothing optional resort holds regular events, and is conveniently located next to a number of area attractions.

More at (NSFW)

Full Tan Sun Club, Sprakers: “Something magical happens to our guests when they take off their clothes: they put on a smile!” That’s according to Full Tan Sun Club, just an hour outside Albany, which claims you can experience a week’s worth of relaxation over the course of one naked weekend.

Steph’s Pond Nudist Park, Williamson: Experience nature as nature intended it. “65 acres of woods, meadows, trails, sunning, picnics, volleyball, camping and showers,” and a welcome environment for families, couples, and singles just a short drive from Rochester.

More at

Bare Lake Nudist Club, near Corning: If you want to visit Bare Lake, you’ll need to call and make a reservation before you can get the address. Once you’re there, you can find boating, fishing, yoga and other fun activities, all clothes-free.

More info at (NSFW)

Brushwood Folklore Center, Sherman: Brushwood is not strictly a nudist or “sky clad” retreat, it’s just part of what they do. The campground and events center “supports and encourages a community focused on creative and spiritual growth.” Enjoy potlucks, camping, festivals and other events at this spiritually-inclined Western NY resort.

Nude-friendly beaches and swimming holes

Alice Falls, Keeseville: If you this is your first nude sunbathing adventure, Alice Falls is said to be a great place to begin. This family oriented spot near Lake Champlain often has fully clothed swimmers, as well as the occasional nude visitor.

Directions and more at Northern New York Waterfalls

Split Rock Hole, New Paltz: While bathing suits are required at the main swimming hole, you can cross the bridge to find a tree-limb stairway and a short path to another hole where bathing suits are a personal choice (rarely worn). A sign on a tree will notify you that you may encounter nude bathers at this spot just south of the Catskills.

More info at, trailhead directions at

Stony Kill Falls, Wawarsing: Just a short trip from Split Rock Hole, on the edge of Minnewaska Preserve are the picturesque Stony Kill Falls. Hiking above the falls will bring you to a a small pool known as “Nudist Pool.” Views from the top of the falls are expansive, and on clear days you can see as far as Sullivan County.

Nudism/Swimming commonly accepted, but technically prohibited

Potter’s Falls, Ithaca: Thousands of people flock to Six Mile Creek all summer long despite the fact that swimming, and nudity, are technically not allowed. The gorgeous and deep Potter’s Falls has plenty of large, flat boulders perfect for nude sunbathing. You will see both nude and clothed visitors, but be prepared to don clothing if ordered to do so by patrolling rangers.

Spier Falls, Gansevoort: Nudity isn’t the norm at this gorgeous lake above a dam just south of Glens Falls in the Hudson Valley, but it is generally accepted. The state owns the land, and “No Swimming” signs are posted, but there is reportedly very little enforcement. More private bathing areas can be found downstream.

More info at

Lakeview WMA, Henderson: This undeveloped sand beach on the eastern shores of Lake Ontario is traditionally nude, though patrolling Dune Stewards can give you a citation if you don’t cover up. You can typically see them coming from far away, giving you plenty of time to cover up.

Nudist/naturist clubs

Naturist Rochester: This club gathers for open nude swimming weekly in the Rochester area. Enjoy naturism year round with Upstate’s oldest non-landed nudist club.

More info at, and on Facebook

Niagara Naturists: This club celebrates thousands of years of nudist heritage in Western New York. They view nudism as a natural state and believe that nudity is healthy and acceptable for social interaction. They also gather for monthly clothed dinners.

Northern Exposure Sun Club: This clothing-optional travel club in the Capital Region visits with other landed and non-landed clubs throughout Upstate, and hosts other fun activities like nude swims, nude picnics and nude bowling.

Young Naturists America: This multi-state club takes trips to nudist destinations throughout the Northeast including to sites in Upstate NY. They are also positive body image and censorship advocacy group.

honestly I’d put that story in my notes at the end of the book but I know if I do that my editor will be like “this story is fantastic why isn’t it a page in the comic” even though I worry that my book focuses too much on the great strike and not enough on Ginger’s work in Trail and his anti-capitalist politics already but like what am I going to do, NOT include a page about Mrs. Axelson, Who Literally Attacked A Bunch Of Cops And Then Busted Into A Jail With An Axe Because Her Husband Was Arrested For Attacking Scabs During A Strike???? like
