I was wondering if any of the mods who have had/are planning on having top surgery, have any tips of how they saved or are saving for their surgery cost? Especially tips that as a 16 I can still do with my limited options. Thank you! :D

Lee says:

What a perfect question for me! I got a part-time job at 16 working as a page at my local public library for minimum wage 3 hours a week to start saving money for top surgery. Now I’m 18 and I still work there but I work 16 hours a week, I have $8,000 saved, and I will be getting top surgery this fall.

I know it isn’t possible for everyone to save money because their parents may take their money, or they have disabilities preventing them from working at all, or there are other things in their life they need the money for more urgently, but if you can save, do it! You don’t know what your insurance situation will be like so better safe than sorry. This is an example of how much top surgery can cost without insurance.

The below tips should help you whether you’re saving for surgery or hormones or breast forms or a binder because saving is saving no matter what you’re saving for.

Step one: Open a bank account. You should tell your parents you want to get a savings account to start saving money and so you can learn more about how banking works and selecting a bank if you don’t already have a bank account open.

You don’t actually earn much in interest, but it’s important to have because it is the most secure way to keep your money, you can keep track of how much is there, and it discourages you from spending it because you have to physically go to the bank and withdraw the money and see your balance lower.

You don’t need to have a bank account if your parents won’t let you, you can keep the money in your closet or whatever as long as you’re saving. My parents didn’t really know that I was saving my money, and if they asked I just said that I’m being financially responsible and may need the money in college.

Step two: Keep track of how much money you spend. When you buy something, ask for a receipt. You can look for apps that can help you keep track of how much you’re spending, or just use a spreadsheet on the computer. Calculate how much money you’ve spent at the end of the month, and where it went to.

Are you spending it on food when you hang out with friends? Video games? Clothes? Avocado toast? Comic books? Now that you know how much you’re spending, see if there’s any area where you can reduce your spending. You should make a budget and allocate a certain amount of money to use each month. Maybe you won’t spend more than $20 a month on going out with friends, and once you’ve hit that limit you have to exert self-control to stop yourself from continuing to spend.

Put any extra money in the bank so you won’t spend it and remember you’re doing this for yourself so you’ll be able to get top surgery quicker. If you don’t save money, it might take longer until you’re able to afford it.

Step three: Save any money you get from birthdays and holidays. If you are lucky enough to have an allowance, save all of your allowance. If you ever find money on the ground, save it.

Step four: Get a source of income. Find a part-time job!  In my state, you can start working most jobs at 16, but you should look at your state’s laws. Make a resume and send it out, fill out applications for places that are hiring, send out word that you are looking to babysit, ask people if they want you to rake their leaves, save your birthday money, do odd chores, tutor elementary school kids, shovel snowy driveways, babysit, sell crafts on Etsy, do whatever you can do to earn a few dollars- then save it!

It’s okay to only work a few hours a week; I started by working 3 hours a week! Take what you can get, and do what you can handle. I wasn’t capable of working a lot of hours, and that’s okay! Don’t overextend yourself- you shouldn’t work more than 20 hours a week max, and 10 hours is the ideal. You can get books from your local library on getting a job and on building job skills, and you can google whatever you’re stuck on like how to write a cover letter.

September 5-9th. 2017

So, this semester has already eaten me a live. That’s why I didn’t post very much this past week. I’ve just been reading; books, articles, short stories, and my own writing and rewriting. Don’t get me wrong, it’s been fun getting back into work but there’s so much this semester. I’m cramming a lot in and it feels overwhelming but I also feel like I have a handle on it for now.

This weekend was refreshing. One of my best friends visited from out of town and I got to watch her rugby game, which she won! I also started work this past week and I finished working on an art project today (9.10.17). Someone donated about 500 copies of National Geographic magazines that date back to the 60s! I’ve been scouting out good photographs to use as inspiration in my journal :)

I’m surviving on avocado toast, Ripple milk, iced coffee, and my new Birkenstocks. Good luck!

Magic:

Ancient Aztecs believe the avocado fruit would fill a person with lust. Growing avocados where you live will attract love into your home. If you don’t want to plant the pit, you can always carry it with you to promote beauty, charm, love, and lust. Making a wand from the branch of an avocado tree also adds power to your magic.

One theory exists that states people used to be buried with an avocado pit. This would promote love and lust in the afterlife.

Euro tour w/ Azriel & Demoraliser - The 2nd half!

This tour is now over and we still owe you an update about the second half.
So here we go:

After a sweet show in Vienna we found ourselves with no sleeping places for the night. So we started asking every single person on that show to hook us up with a decent floor. Finally we found a dude with a huge flat! Problem solved.

The Backstage Club in Munich was seriously one ace venue. There was some kind of a flat for the bands with showers, beds and food en masse! God damned, they made us the happiest touring lads in Europe!
The show was pretty sweet as well, but not half as crowded as the show next to our venue. A band with members of Queens Of The Stone Age and The Eagles Of Death Metal had a huge rock show going while we were partying with a handful of people haha. Hello irony!

Next stop: Berlin! This city proved again that it’s just the raddest city in Germany.
To cut this short: Pure sightseeing madness!

The two last dates in Belgium were really cool as well! We had two sweet shows in As and Brugge and Brugge was seriously one of the most beautiful cities we’ve ever seen!

All in all this tour was just amazing. We had nothing but good laughs and good times w/ the dudes in Azriel and Demoraliser plus their crew.

Shout outs to: Rob, Ben, Sean, Andy, Richard, Dave, John M, Nathan, Dex, Sam, John S, Matt, West and Razor! We love you all and can’t wait to hang around again!

Also a huge thanks goes out to Jelle of As Enemies Arise for helping us out as bassplayer + entertainer and Avocado Booking for booking us this rad tour!
