Chapter 8 - Why Can’t It Be Beautiful?

Leia feels something catastrophic in the Force, and some long-held family secrets are finally revealed.

Author’s Note: I’m not gonna lie–this is going to be a tough chapter. As you read, I hope you will trust me and keep in mind these three things:

  • “TFA fix-it” still applies
  • “Eventual happy ending” still applies
  • Luke Skywalker keeps his promises

anonymous asked:

What do you think about Ron being a prefect because that always pissed me off in my opinion he absolutely did not deserve it

By the time he was 15 Ron Weasley had faced down more genuinely terrifying obstacles than most adults. He had demonstrated that his loyalty would prevail even when he was scared or jealous. He had shown that he had valuable skills and knew his limits, and that he was willing to step aside and take one for the team. Why wouldn’t he deserve to be a prefect?

Even if you’re not a Ron fan, though, consider the context. In appointing prefects Dumbledore would have had several goals in mind:

  • Keeping a handle on Harry - no one was going to do that better than Ron, including Hermione, who both Ron and Harry sometimes disregard because she can be so by-the-book.
  • Making sure that Harry had the latitude to do what he needed to do - Ron was going to be understanding of that in a way no one else would have been.
  • Making sure that the Death Eaters didn’t get a foothold in Gryffindor - Ron would never have let that happen.
  • Developing the Order’s bench - Ron’s whole family was in the Order, developing his leadership skills and confidence was the safest bet going.
  • Creating balance in the house - Hermione might be a stickler for rules, but Ron would be a moderating influence.
  • Appointing prefects who could lighten adults’ loads as they focused on the war - Ron would have had important perspective on what really needed adult intervention and what students could be encouraged to work out on their own.
  • Appointing prefects who would stand up to each other and make sure no one abused their power - Ron definitely wouldn’t have had a problem stepping in if anyone else, especially Pansy and Draco, had tried pulling rank on younger kids, and the Slytherins would’ve realized that Ron wouldn’t have been above retaliating if they’d been tempted.
  • Making Ron a prefect also would’ve helped him come into his own among his siblings, given him a better understanding of power and authority (and helped reveal any lurking character issues that power might have brought out - remember how Percy changed when he became a prefect?)
  • And tbh, if Dumbledore saw what was coming he may have understood the virtue in giving Ron some privileges and creature comforts (for his sake and for Harry’s).

Consider the choices, too. There are only five possible Gryffindor boys prefects.

  • Harry was way too preoccupied and wouldn’t have benefited from additional responsibility, nor was it the best use of his energy.
  • Seamus had doubts about whether Voldemort’s return was real and had contributed to people second-guessing Harry, and it would’ve been risky to give him authority if that’s how he might have used it.
  • Neville still had his old wand and his magical strength wasn’t great yet, and he also may not have had the social authority to enforce rules, plus he had shown that he was willing to stand up to the trio and stop them from doing what they needed to do which, while brave and well-intentioned, had the potential to really get in the way of important stuff.
  • Dean was great and probably would’ve been a perfectly fine prefect but didn’t come with the same tactical advantages.

Any way you look at it, it’s gotta be Ron. He was the best choice going in any number of ways. Including because he had shown that he deserved it.

(P.S. - Why Pansy and Draco were the right choices too)

Author Reveal: Part 1

Baby, Teach Me How To / FallingLikeThis (Zayniamp)

At 10 am, the door to the studio classroom shuts with a bang that makes Harry jolt in his seat at the sound of it. He turns to see an absolutely gorgeous man standing there, hand still on the doorknob. His hair falls in a windswept swoop over his brow and he’s got a sexy scruff on his cheeks that Harry immediately can’t help imagining between his thighs. The man’s eyes shine with mirth, lips quirked into a wicked grin at having gotten a reaction from nearly everyone in the room. Harry watches him with unfettered curiosity, idly thinking he’d be a beautiful subject for a portrait as the man’s hand falls from the door.

“Hello, class,” he says, clapping his hands in front of him and Harry’s eyes have a hard time staying in his head.

This is Professor Tomlinson?

Or, Louis is Harry’s art professor and they both know it’s forbidden to fall in love. Somehow, they manage to anyway.

Runner on Third / kikikryslee

The AU where Louis and Harry were best friends growing up, but lost touch after Harry moved away. Ten years later, Harry has moved back to town, but he and Louis don’t pick up where they left off.

Permanent Fixtures / thefray

Louis is different. And, if you ask Harry, every subtle change in the energy of the neighborhood can be tied back to Louis.

or, neighbors au

Home Might Be Something I Miss / curlyfries

When Louis finds an ad online for his dream job, it couldn’t have come at a better time. Stuck in his career, his ex and his city, he decides a change is what he needs. Cue London, an old school friend and of course Harry Styles. He’s refreshing, he’s gentle and he’s a bright star in an otherwise dull sky. After spending the day together touring London, Louis can’t get Harry Styles out of his mind. But maybe he isn’t meant to.

Or, an AU featuring a dog, a cat and shy smiles from an adorable pair of strangers.

Oh How I Hate This Red String of Fate / CalamityK

Harry thought being able to see people’s strings die would be the worst thing about his gift, until at twenty-two he finally met the other end of his own.
Or that soulmate AU where Harry can see the red strings of fate that tie everyone together.

Hold My Heart / Awriterwrites & phdmama

“Excuse me, mate, I’m the window seat here.” The voice was soft, apologetic, and accented in something a bit unfamiliar — northern England, maybe, Harry thought.

“Oh,” Harry jumped to his feet and moved aside, “I’m sorry, I didn’t see you standing there.”

The other man laughed as he swung a bag into the overhead compartment and slid into the seat. “You were well caught up in that book, mate. What are you reading?”

Harry paused, wondering how to explain the fact that he was reading an epic and x-rated romance that was the story of a relationship between a prince and the man he’d enslaved. “Oh, you know, just some fiction my sister recommended.” He turned to look at the man and froze.

Sitting next to him was Louis Tomlinson.

Or, the one where famous Louis Tomlinson offers his hand and a lot more to his seat mate on a transatlantic flight.

Just Hold On / louhearted

‘You found me hanging by my fingertips from your window and I don’t want to tell you I was trying to rob you, but idk how else to explain this and I don’t want to go to jail and also you’re kind of cute we should make out when I’m not clinging onto your window ledge for my life’ AU

I Can’t Stop Thinking ‘Bout You / lostboysoflondon

Harry supposes Louis’ brash personality is only reserved for people he knows well. People that aren’t Harry, because honestly, Harry hasn’t spoken more than two sentences to Louis in his life.

The thing is, Harry notices Louis far more that he would like and it’s become far too distracting.

Or, after an unfortunate amount of time, Harry’s useless staring finally pays off.

You’re My Kind of Hurricane / tomlinsoul

Harry’s worked in the bakery on Garrett Road ever since he and his best friend left the dull life of their hometown to find something exciting in London. Now, just as they’re becoming the official managers of The Bake House, there’s a new man working in the comic store across the road.

Harry’s never read a comic book in his life, but he somehow finds himself browsing various Superman cartoons, and Louis will be damned if anyone catches him eating a croissant like a pretentious dick, but soon he’s stopping by as much as possible.

(It’s not a thing, but maybe it is.)

Forever Is A Long Time, But I Wouldn’t Mind Spending It By Your Side / fabuloushazza

Maybe it was fate. Louis and Harry were meant to spend their lives with each other, regardless of what could happen. Because when you’re spending your life with the right person, you can overcome any rocky situation that life throws at you. Louis just hopes that Harry is that person.

Written for the H/L fic Exchange 2016

Louis wonders briefly and self-destructively what it would be like to actually have Harry, to be the person he comes home to after work, to smile back at him and fold him up in a hug, to nuzzle into his hair and say, How was your day, babe? Ugh. He shakes his head, hating how cruel his imagination is, providing him with impossible scenarios to feel cold about later.

Harry is the world’s most persistent seduction-baker, a questionable dog-sitter, and Louis’s biggest fan. Louis hasn’t written in years, is trying to pass loneliness off as cynicism, and absolutely hates his fans. It’s probably destiny.

Listen. LISTEN TO ME. This fic is so beautiful. I literally choked out an ugly sob at how moving the ending is. Please read it. It’s sexy, and sweet, and slow burn, and famous/not famous, and has commentary on art and creativity, and beautiful writing, and gorgeous characterizations, and yeah…I really liked it so, so much. Read it and come back and tell me what you think!

What was it like; growing up knowing you’d probably be sorted into Slytherin?” he asks, not really sure if he should. It’s a period of their lives that they’ve never talked about before, not really. They’ve hashed out what happened at school, what happened during the war, what happened afterwards. But they’ve never talked about their childhoods.

“Fuck, you’re chatty tonight…” Malfoy grumbles and Harry grimaces to himself. He shouldn’t have brought it up.

“Sorry,” he mumbles. The air hangs between them, heavy and awkward. Harry knows that Malfoy has his eyes open, without having to look at him. His breathing isn’t as heavy as when he’s falling asleep. Harry feels his lips twitch at the memory of Malfoy falling asleep on the sofa for those few months he lived with Harry. Except it had been a little different then. He’d been gaunt, unhappy, exhausted from Auror training and looking for a flat. He looks better now. Stronger. Less pointy, still chiselled.

“It was… difficult,” Malfoy’s voice is so quiet Harry thinks maybe he misheard, “Not at the time, but as I got older. By the time I was at Hogwarts I realised that the worst thing I could do in my father’s eyes was disappoint him. And…” he swallows, his voice cracking slightly, “And I really didn’t want to disappoint him. There was a lot of pressure. And as you know, I didn’t deal with that very well.” He tries to make his voice light at the end, but Harry knows him so he reaches over and takes Malfoy’s hand with his, prepared for it to be snatched away. It isn’t.

“At least you knew you were loved,” Harry murmurs, the skin on the back of his neck tingling, his insides squirming uncomfortably. He was loved, but maybe it wasn’t the best thing in the world to be loved by Lucius Malfoy.

“Hmm…” Malfoy doesn’t sound sure and Harry’s heart feels like it’s cracking. He coughs, forcing the tears back, his eyes stinging from them.

“I… uh… I didn’t have that.” For once in their life it’s not a competition. Harry wants Malfoy to know. Wants to tell him. He wants to tell him everything, about the Dursleys and the cupboard and the school and the accidental magic and his parents. Everything. Everything that only Ron and Hermione know.

“Pressure?” Malfoy asks.

This was my exchange fic for @baneismydragon! I hope you enjoy(ed) it, you gave a really good prompt! Shout out to @reyxa for lending me her soulmates au where the sneezes of soulmates sync up.

Summary: "After pouring two packs of chocolate powder in each mug, she felt a sudden sensation in her sinuses thanks to the powder that remained in the air. Quickly, she put her finger below her nose, pleased when the sneeze stopped. After that, it was quick work to pour the water and stir the mix in, and just as she was about to bring them out-

She sneezed.

She stared at the mugs of hot chocolate, her eyes impossibly wide. There was no way. She had to be dreaming. She did not just hear three consecutive sneezes come from her friends in the living room.”

Or, a soulmate au where the sneezes of soulmates sync up after you meet them.

“Alright, class, we’ve got two new students joining us this semester. Please, introduce yourselves for us,” their teacher, Madame Bustier, said.

Standing in front of the rest of the class were two students, one that looked excited and fiery, and another that looked shy and awkward. To the class’ surprise, the shy one spoke first.

“Hi, my name’s Adrien, and I look forward to working with all of you in the future.” He punctuated his statement with a quick little wave and a sweet smile.

After he finished speaking, the other spoke. “I’m Alya, and I just moved nearby from across the city.”

Madame Bustier gave them both a smile and gestured for them to find their seats. Alya moved instantly, spotting an empty seat in the second row, next to a girl she’d actually ran into before school started. Adrien rubbed his arm, his eyes sweeping across the room. He saw a childhood friend of his waving for him to sit by her, but he cringed when he saw her trying to push her seatmate out for him. In the hopes of letting the poor girl keep her seat, Adrien sat as close as he could by taking the empty seat in front, next to a student that looks uninterested in what was going on.

While the two settled in, their teacher was about to continue speaking when two synchronized sneezes sounded from the back of the room. Adrien and Alya both turned to look, eyes wide at actually having a pair of soulmates in their classroom. They saw a couple sitting next to each other in the row behind Alya, both of them blushing a tiny bit as their hands intertwined.

Patient though she may be, when Adrien and Alya didn’t look away, Madame Bustier cleared her throat and brought their attention back to her. It was only then that the two noticed nobody else had turned to gawk, which could only mean they all knew already.

“I understand that soulmates are an interesting topic to talk about, let alone see in person, but we do have class to tend to, Monsieur Agreste and Mademoiselle Césaire.” With that, she turned around and started writing on the board. Adrien looked sheepish and stared down at his desk while Alya turned to the girl beside her and started whispering.

“So girl, mind spilling the beans on those two behind us?” she asked, not quiet enough to keep Adrien and his seatmate from hearing. “Are they really… you know?”

Another smutastic masterpiece brought to you by my fabulous co-host @wildegreenlight

There were only two things that made Ministry functions bearable: appetizers and Hermione in a dress, well, more accurately, taking Hermione out of her dress at the end of the night. Dancing wasn’t bad either, as long as it was his wife and not some old crone who wanted to babble on and on about his “war hero” status.

He had managed to escape two of those this evening and avoid a rather forward witch who was interning in his Dad’s department. Kingsley had cornered his beautiful wife half an hour ago, and he was now scanning the crowd trying to locate her.

A moment of unease furrowed his brow; even though he knew it was a bit silly, he always felt better when he knew she was safe, especially in large crowds. Before he could work himself up too much, Ron felt a hand on his back and another one slip into his pocket.

“Looking for someone?”

“Yeah, my wife, you seen her?”

“Not sure…what’s she look like?”

“You couldn’t miss her: she’s the most gorgeous witch here.”

“She must be to land a catch like you… not be too bright though…leaving you unattended…there’s all manner of birds swarming about. I’m sure they’d love to get their hands on such a fit specimen as yourself.”

Ron turned around, chuckling as he gazed into his wife’s eyes; they sparkled in that playful way he adored.

“Thank Merlin you’re back! I was positively afraid for my life out here alone.”

“You poor thing! How can I ever make it up to you?”

Down & Dirty - I Know You Hear Me / edi-neil (sweet_trick)

Louis loves Harry. It’s a fact. But when Harry confesses to a crush, Louis has to learn to share.

Carried Away Like Butterflies / waytoomanypeopleintheaddisonlee

“Actually…” Liam said, scratching his chin absently. “I have a friend who is moving to London soon.”

“Without anywhere to live? Who is it? Do I want them living in my home?!”

“You met him at my birthday party. Harry, from Cheshire. Remember? Really tight jeans, curly hair down to here?”

Realisation dawned on Louis, staring at Liam who was gesturing round about his nipples. Did he remember Harry? Did he remember Harry? He remembered Harry’s square front teeth biting into his collarbone, and he remembered Harry moaning, loud and obscene with no provocation. He remembered Harry dropping to his knees at the edge of the bed and roughly pulling Louis closer. He remembered, vividly, Harry’s lovely plump lips wrapping around his-

“Uh- what?” Louis said, startled. “Oh, yeah. Um, I think I remember him.”

It was probably a huge mistake for Louis to let his former One Night Stand move into his spare room, especially when said One Night Stand doesn’t seem to remember him.

Kiss the Boys / FallingLikeThis (Zayniam)

“Being able to blatantly kiss pretty boys out in the open is my favorite part of Pride,” Harry says without preamble, leaning into Louis’ space, inviting pink lips quirking up as they get closer to him. “You up for it?”

“Um,” Louis glances at Zayn for help. He’d thought for sure after the way he’d just seen Zayn and Harry kissing, there had to be something more going on there. The last thing Louis expects to see on Zayn’s face is a knowing grin.

Harry leans closer and for a split-second, Louis wants to meet him halfway but then he thinks better of it. He doesn’t know the landscape here and in just a couple of weeks living with him, he’s already learned that Zayn is really bad about holding his feelings in. He doesn’t want to risk stepping on the toes of his closest friend here at Uni. So, at the last second, Louis raises his empty hand and covers Harry’s mouth before the boy can complete his mission.

“Sorry, Curly,” Louis says jokingly, “I just don’t know where that mouth has been.”

When You Look Like That / hrrytomlinson

“You… you still have the dress form I got you for your eighteenth birthday? You’ve kept it for ten years, Harry?” Louis’ eyes flick around Harry’s studio. It’s big and modern, with floor to ceiling windows that help flood the room in bright sunlight, just like the lobby. However, he can’t stop staring at the faded, but present, heart surrounding the “H + L” written delicately in Louis’ handwriting in the center of the mannequin.

Louis is a songwriter who is nominated for a Grammy and he needs a suit. Fast. He seeks out help from a very popular, very mysterious designer who just so happens to be his ex-boyfriend.

For a Spell That Can’t be Broken / outofthewoods (wildest dreams)

“Why do you have to bug him so much, Lou?” Niall asked, chewing on the sleeve of his Gryffindor robes. “He’s a good kid.”

“I’m aware of that,” Louis argued petulantly.

“Are you sure?” Niall asked, his expression sincerely concerned.

“Don’t mind him,” Zayn spoke up. “Louis’ just got a weird fetish for tormenting boys he likes.”

A Harry Potter AU where Louis’ got a secret crush on Harry and won’t admit it until a late entrance into potions class outs him.

If I Don’t Have You (There’ll be Nothing Left) / SadaVeniren

“What is his problem?” Louis demanded as he stalked around Niall and Ed’s kitchen. They were gonna have a pow-wow and figure out what was going on with Harry.

“Maybe he can’t pop a knot?” Niall suggested.

“Ew,” Liam said.

“Doubtful,” Louis said. “He seemed perfectly fine up until his friend pulled him off of me. Also I may have called him a knothead earlier in the night and he didn’t make a single comment to me about it.”

AKA Louis thought after meeting Harry at a party everything would fall into place. If only life worked out that nicely.

Love is a Kitten From Hell / youbeyou

Louis Tomlinson passes himself off as an arrogant prick at his new school to hide the fact that he’s terrified of being bullied again. Just when he’s getting tired of putting up walls, he finds himself in a local pet shop where he finds a sanctuary playing with the kittens in the front window.

Harry Styles is the popular football player who works at the pet shop, secretly watching the boy he thought was utterly unlikable prove him wrong.

Partnered together for a class project, Harry gets more and more hints that Louis is actually someone worth getting to know. But the real question is, will Louis let Harry in?

Simple Love of That Which Deserves Love / curlyfries

When Louis is forced to attend a magic show with his friend Niall, he imagines a horribly long night filled with alcohol so he can get through it. But when he bumps into Harry, he experiences the show with fresh eyes.

When Harry loses his kitten, Louis comes to the rescue. And after never expecting to see each other again, it’s a pleasant surprise.

Or, an AU where they attend a magic show and Louis likes it more than he thought he would. Featuring all the boys, more pets, mutual pining and a happy ending.

Pour Yourself Over Me (Until There’s Nothing Left To See) / patdkitten

Louis receives a strange invitation to a masquerade ball from a stranger who offers to pay for everything.

A Few Feet Away / blahthelarry

Zayn ran his tongue along his upper lip.

“Louis, how many times?” His lips were beside Louis’ ear. The whisper sounded louder than the passing cars outside. “How many times are you going to run away?”

Set in 2018, Louis battles addiction and an estranged mind that still believes Zayn is his best friend. As a final goodbye to their fans, One Direction promised to come together one last time for what would be the last album of their career. Though it had seemed the best thing to do when they had taken their hiatus in 2015, everything had changed in the three years they had been apart. Harry is acting, Niall has started touring, and Liam, while writing songs on the side, adopted his first child on his own. The only one who hadn’t been moving his life forward was Louis. Distraught and unsure how to cope with his bad choices, he’d turned to one of his closest friends: Zayn. Through his last memories with Zayn, he tries to right his wrongs and find closure in a relationship that had been hidden from the public.

Don’t Play with Me (‘Cause You’re Playing with Fire) / lovelikelou

Louis leaves his hometown as soon as high school ends to travel the world. Not entirely ready to take on the world on his own, he stumbles head first into an unexpected whirlwind of restless green eyes, dark secrets and more love than he could ever imagine.

Feel the Heat from the Camera / Applecheese7

Louis is a make-up youtuber who doesn’t take nothing from nobody. Harry is a challenge youtuber who decides to challenge Louis to do a video. When tagging him on twitter it starts an unlikely friendship that transcends into real life. As they slowly begin to fall in love they question, how can love survive off the internet?

Title: Misdial

Summary: When Chloe wakes up in the middle of the night, she desperately tries to call Sabrina to help her get back to sleep.

She misdials and calls Marinette instead.

Chloe needs to hear Sabrina’s voice.

Her eyes feel heavy with the pressure of tears she’s forcing herself to swallow back, and she can hear herself pulling lungfuls of air into her chest while she yanks her phone off the charger. Her fingers are shaking so terribly it takes her four tries to correctly type her pass code, but she sees Sabrina’s name on her recent calls list and her thumb mashes down on the screen.

She presses the phone tightly to her ear and rocks back and forth on the bed as it rings once, twice, three times. Chloe thinks it must be at least two in the morning, and she knows that Sabrina isn’t ever up this late. She tends to sleep through phone calls in the middle of the night, and Chloe is prepared for the sound of her voicemail and the crippling resignation that’ll come when she’ll have to get through this alone. Chloe bites down on her lip and nods to herself. That’s okay. Sabrina needs her sleep. She understands.

Chloe’s about to give up when the sixth ring is cut off and the line picks up on the other end. She doesn’t waste time with greetings or apologies. The words are already tripping out of her mouth.

“I-I had it again,” she chokes out, her voice thick with tears. “It was the same dream again but a hundred times worse, and I woke up with my heart in my throat and there was no one around and I panicked. I-It felt really real this time, Sabrina, and I was all alone and I couldn’t hear anyone or see anyone and I feel like I’m about to throw up a-and I just…..I just, I don’t know what to do and I’m too scared to go back to sleep, please , I can’t calm down and everything feels so wrong!”

The panic in her voice is starting to make her hyperventilate, so she stops and places a hand over her mouth so she can breathe in through her nose, just like Sabrina taught her the first time she called her in the middle of the night. Chloe’s heart is still racing, as if her body still thinks she’s in danger, and she’s patiently waiting for Sabrina to respond so that she can finally relax.

She hears a voice on the other end — one filled with worry, words slurring together out of exhaustion — but Chloe freezes up in horror when she realizes that it isn’t Sabrina’s.

“Um….wha’s wrong now?”

“You want me to what?”

“You heard me,” Chloe snapped, tapping her foot impatiently as she stared Marinette down. “It’s in two months. That’s plenty of time.”

Marinette frowned, almost glaring back. “You want me to make a dress for you?”

“Yes,” Chloe answered as though the request was perfectly normal.

“Is this a joke?”

Chloe huffed and looked away. “No. Daddykins already offered to pay you.”

“Wait.” Marinette held up a hand. “Why would you ask me to design your dress?”

Chloe finally looked back at Marinette and sighed impatiently. “Well, you won that contest with Mr. Agreste, didn’t you? That must mean you’re good.”

“But, you could hire a professional. I don’t get it.” Marinette folded her arms over her chest. “Why come to me?”

“You’re my classmate. It’s convenient.”

“I don’t buy it,” Marinette answered, shaking her head.

“Plus, you’re an amateur, so Daddykins won’t have to pay you as much,” Chloe replied with a too-casual wave of her hand.

“You expect me to believe you care about saving money?” Marinette scoffed. “I heard you refused a picture frame because it was the wrong kind of gold.”

“I…” Chloe rolled her eyes and spat out the words like they were poison. “Fine. I happen to like some of your designs. Are you happy now?”

Marinette’s eyes widened. “You do?” It was certainly news to her, given how often Chloe teased her about her taste in clothes. “Since when?”

“Look, are you going to design something or not?”

Are you using Legilimency on me?”

Malfoy laughed, a little choked laugh, stiffening only slightly as Harry put one knee on the chair between his legs and leant into his personal space.

“What’s so funny?”

“That you think you wouldn’t know if I tried to invade your mind. You really have no idea how powerful you are now, do you?”

“I’ve never been any good at Occlumency,” Harry snarled, unreasonably riled.

“I’m not reading your mind,” said Draco. “I just know what it looks like when someone wants to hurt me.”

Harry reared back. “I don’t…”

“Oh, but you do,” said Draco, leaning forward. “And I find it… interesting. I’d let you, you know. If you wanted to.”

Harry retreated back all the way now, putting a good few metres between them. “Why would you even say that?”

“Because I’m curious. Because the way you look at me sometimes… I think it might be worth it.

Part I: Your Name is a Golden Bell Hung in my Heart

It kind of freaked Jason out the first time he started crooning and Tim didn’t respond. It was supposed to be instinctual for Omegas to be comforted by the lower rumble in the chest of an Alpha they trusted, and if it worked to calm them down to respond with their own purr.

Tim hadn’t spoken ever since Jason had rescued him, but he was fairly certain that the problem was mental rather than physical. There had been some cuts on his neck, sure, but nothing deep enough that it should have affected his ability to speak. Still, ever since he had woken up in Jason’s safe house he had only been using ASL to communicate, and occasionally pen and paper.

Still, since the injury wasn’t physical Jason had expected Tim to be able to purr. They were sitting on the sofa, Tim in Jason’s lap while cartoons played on the TV. Jason wasn’t quite sure how they had gotten to be so close like this in a matter of days, and Daddy-Bats was likely going to beat him to a bloody pulp when he found out that his son had grown (unhealthily) attached to the Red Hood. For now though, Jason enjoyed it. Tim was warm and soft, letting out comforting Omega scents, and even though he could be kind of a prick despite not being able to speak, sometimes Tim was sweet.

Jason hadn’t thought to try crooning before since he knew he wasn’t a trusted Alpha, just some minor annoyance to Batman that at least knew to stay in his own neighborhood so that they only occasionally saw him out on patrol. He hadn’t meant to do it now, but with Tim still all bandaged up and leaning against his chest it had happened subconsciously. It was a little embarrassing honestly, but embarrassment quickly turned to worry when Tim didn’t make any noise back.

It couldn’t be that Tim didn’t trust him. As banged up as he was, if he had tried to run away Jason would have let him. He had slept in front of Jason, eaten what he had cooked, even curled into Jason for comfort. Could something be wrong? Was he too distressed to purr back? Jason’s chin was resting atop Tim’s head, so he couldn’t even see his face to be sure.

The rumbling stopped as Jason’s worry mounted until he finally asked, “Tim?”

The boy pulled back to look up at Jason, his eyes droopy and a slight smile on his face. He looked pretty blissed out actually, and Jason wondered if he was the one who had done that to him. Tim raised his eyebrows in questioning, while still managing to look sleepy and adorable (wait, what?).

“Don’t worry about it,” Jason quickly reassured him. He pulled Tim’s head down to rest against his chest again, his rumble starting back up as he ran his fingers through Tim’s soft hair. Tim sighed, nuzzling at the crook of Jason’s neck, where his scent was strongest, seemingly completely content. Jason studiously stared at the TV, trying to pretend that the action hadn’t just made him blush (it was just hot in here, that was all. He needed to open a window or something).

It was about a week later that Tim finally began to make some noise. Jason had only thought to go check on him in the bedroom because he could have sworn he heard whimpers, choked off as they were. He found Tim jerking around in bed as he slept, sheets tangled around his limbs as he suffered from a nightmare.

Jason wasn’t entirely sure what had happened to Tim at the hands of the human trafficking ring that had him. When he found him he had been tied up like he was being crucified, costume bloody and in tatters, his domino mask ripped off, the skin it had been adhered to red and slightly bloody. Jason had killed all the men who could have possibly found out Red Robin’s secret identity, but he knew that turning him over to the authorities meant revealing that information to them as well. At a loss, Jason had taken the boy to one of his safe houses until he could get home on his own (or, at this rate, until he finally decided he wanted to leave).

In an attempt to rouse him from his dream Jason called Tim’s name, gently placing a hand on his shoulder. Tim whimpered again, high and pitiful, and certainly not a noise he would make were he awake. Not wanting to violently pull him from the dream Jason laid down alongside Tim, the covers a thin barrier between them. He ran fingers through Tim’s hair as he began to croon, remembering how effective it had been last time.

Tim’s whimpers quieted as his eyes opened into slits, drowsy and still mostly asleep. He rolled into Jason’s warmth a bit more, placing them chest to chest to better feel the calming vibrations going through the Alpha’s torso.

To Jason’s surprise and delight, Tim responded with a small, somewhat broken purr. It was as if he was relearning how to as an adult, though it should have come instinctually. It wobbled a bit, as if it wasn’t sure which pitch it wanted to be on, occasionally breaking off before starting back up again. It was perfect, and Jason might have melted a bit on the inside at the sound (just a little, not that much. If his crooning got louder it was simply in response to the additional vibrations and that was it, really).

Tim sighed in contentment, nuzzling his head up under Jason’s chin. Jason squeezed his eyes shut, his hands balling up into fists against the covers. Fuck, that was cute. That was so fucking cute and Jason could feel the blood rising up to his cheeks and Batman was going to castrate him, he had to get a hold of himself.

Tim’s purr hitched in his throat for a moment, and he wrinkled his nose in response to briefly being woken up. He wiggled around a bit, one hand finding a grip in Jason’s t-shirt as he got comfortable and fell back asleep.

Jason buried his face in his pillow. Fuck, he was so screwed.

True Crime Book Master Post - At the request from a few of my followers, I have decided to make a second master post including some of my favourite true crime books that I have read recently. Click here to see my first true crime book master post. Click the name to be linked to where you can purchase the book online!

The Shankill Butchers - During the 1970s a group of Protestant paramilitaries embarked on a spree of indiscriminate murder which left thirty Northern Irish Catholics dead. Their leader was Lenny Murphy, a fanatical Unionist whose Catholic-sounding surname led to his persecution as a child for which he took revenge on all Catholics. Not for the squeamish, The Shankill Butchers is a horrifying detailed account of one of the most brutal series of murders in British legal history - a phenomenon whose real nature has been obscured by the troubled and violent context from which it sprang.”

The Texarkana Moonlight Murders - “ In 1946, years before the phrase “"serial murder”“ was coined, a masked killer terrorised the town of Texarkana on the Texas-Arkansas border. Striking five times within a ten-week period, always at night, the prowler claimed six lives and left three other victims wounded. Survivors told police that their assailant was a man, but could supply little else. A local newspaper dubbed him the Phantom Killer, and it stuck. Texarkana’s phantom was not America’s first serial slayer; he certainly was not the worst, either in body count or sheer brutality. But he has left a crimson mark on history as one of those who got away. Like the elusive Axeman of New Orleans, Cleveland’s Mad Butcher of Kingsbury Run, and San Francisco’s Zodiac, the Phantom Killer left a haunting mystery behind. This is the definitive story of that mystery.”

The Profession of Violence: The Rise and Fall of the Kray Twins - “ Reggie and Ronnie Kray ruled London’s gangland during the 60s with a ruthlessness and viciousness that shocks even now. Building an empire of organised crime that has never been matched, the brothers swindled, extorted and terrorised – while enjoying a glittering celebrity status at the heart of the swinging 60s scene, until their downfall and imprisonment for life.”

Cold Serial: The Jack the Strangler Murders - “Cold Serial” paints the picture of five girls who were raped and strangled in the Dayton, Ohio, area between 1900 and 1909. The working conditions, lack of rights for women and police protection, and the sexism of the age portray these girls as victims not only of a crime but also of their time. As their stories unfold, a common thread appears, a modus operandi that begins to link them together. During that era, police did not recognize the lurking shadow of a predator. But through diligent research conducted by the author, it is now revealed.”

America’s Death Penalty: Between Past and Present -  “Over the past three decades, the United States has embraced the death penalty with tenacious enthusiasm. While most of those countries whose legal systems and cultures are normally compared to the United States have abolished capital punishment, the United States continues to employ this ultimate tool of punishment. The death penalty has achieved an unparalleled prominence in our public life and left an indelible imprint on our politics and culture. It has also provoked intense scholarly debate, much of it devoted to explaining the roots of American exceptionalism.”

Fred And Rose: The Full Story of Fred and Rose West and the Gloucester House of Horrors - “ During their long relationship the Wests murdered a series of young women, burying the remains of nine victims under their home at 25 Cromwell Street, Gloucester, including those of their teenage daughter, Heather. What was left of Fred West’s eight-year-old stepdaughter was dug up from under the Wests’ previous Gloucester home; his first wife and nanny were buried in open country outside the city. Several victims had been decapitated and dismembered, their remains showing signs of sexual torture. These twelve are just the ones the police found when the Wests were arrested in 1994. There may be more whose bones have not been located.”

Encyclopedia of Murder and Violent Crime - “Edited by an internationally recognized expert on serial killers, this encyclopedia covers both murder and violent crime in their variant forms. Included are biographies, chronologies, special interest inset boxes, up to 100 photographs, comprehensive article bibliographies, and appendices for items such as famous unsolved cases, celebrity murders, assasinations, original source documents, and online sources for information.”

Bind, Torture, Kill: The Inside Story of BTK, the Serial Killer Next Door - “For thirty-one years, a monster terrorized the residents of Wichita, Kansas. A bloodthirsty serial killer, self-named “BTK"—for "bind them, torture them, kill them"—he slaughtered men, women, and children alike, eluding the police for decades while bragging of his grisly exploits to the media. The nation was shocked when the fiend who was finally apprehended turned out to be Dennis Rader—a friendly neighbor … a devoted husband … a helpful Boy Scout dad … the respected president of his church.Written by four award-winning crime reporters who covered the story for more than twenty years, Bind, Torture, Kill is the most intimate and complete account of the BTK nightmare told by the people who were there from the beginning. With newly released documents, evidence, and information—and with the full cooperation, for the very first time, of the Wichita Police Department’s BTK Task Force—the authors have put all the pieces of the grisly puzzle into place, thanks to their unparalleled access to the families of the killer and his victims.”

Hitler’s Furies: German Women in the Nazi Killing Fields - “ History has it that the role of women in Nazi Germany was to be the perfect Hausfrau and a loyal cheerleader for the Führer. However, Lower’s research reveals an altogether more sinister truth. Lower shows us the ordinary women who became perpetrators of genocide. Drawing on decades of research, she uncovers a truth that has been in the shadows – that women too were brutal killers and that, in ignoring women’s culpability, we have ignored the reality of the Holocaust.”

Tent Number Eight - “ On a warm summer day in 1977, the State of Oklahoma was shaken by the heinous and vulgar murder of three Girl Scouts in Tent Number Eight at Camp Scott near Locust Grove, Oklahoma. The investigation of their murders and the subsequent trial of the Native American man accused of those murders will forever be marked as one of the most historical in Oklahoma history. Author Gloyd McCoy dissects the investigation of the Girl Scout murders as well as The State of Oklahoma vs. Gene Leroy Hart from the vantage point of the families, the law enforcement, the news reporters, the lawyers, the judges, and the jury. He provides background information on all the parties involved and explanations regarding why certain decisions were made, including the acquittal of the accused murderer, and what might have happened if the lawyers on both sides had made different decisions and modern technology were available. Tent Number Eight will enlighten you on the court proceedings and cultural influences of 1977 and preserve this piece of history in your mind forever. Follow the overgrowth of history back to the site of the crime. Step into Tent Number Eight and witness the events of the murders and trial first hand.”

The Only Living Witness: The True Story of Serial Sex Killer Ted Bundy - “ Ted Bundy was America’s first celebrity serial killer, and one of the most chilling enigmas in criminal history. Handsome, boyish and well-spoken, a law student with bright political prospects, Bundy was also a predator and sexual deviant who murdered and mutilated at least thirty young women and girls, many of them college coeds but at least two as young as twelve.”

Someone: The vampires aren’t the bad guys!!! They’re actually nice and good!!!

uh huh. yes.

interesting. very interesting.

I mean. If kidnapping and abusing children is benevolent then I guess so. Ya know, causing trauma, torturing and hurting them needlessly, killing tons of people…but hey, they did that one Good Thing once, right? When was that?

Maybe it was that time one of the higher ranking progenitors backed a taboo experiment that millions, if not trillions of humans were killed for and she’s prbly gonna get off scot-free bcs PLOT REASONS but hey whatever nameless side characters, lol.

Also if anyone thinks the vamps have it worse off than the humans, pls tell me how much humiliation and suffering the humans caused vampires. About 0, imo. But how much humiliation and suffering have vampires caused humans? Killing them for pleasure, calling them livestock, using them as bait and letting them get killed or hurt just for entertainment? Hm, that can’t add up to THAT much. Nah, vampires are just misunderstood. They’re just misunderstood, right? I’m sure its only a matter of chapters before the author reveals that vampires actually want to protect kids and save the planet out of the kindness of their heart and everyone they killed was just the humans imagining things. Good thing to know that Yoichi’s sister and Yuu’s adopted family aren’t dead after all.
