I come from German stock.

My grandmother is first generation, and is both what I normally think of when I think of Germans: tall, blonde, high cheek boned, and an odd sort of smile that creeps on the face and is surprising. My dad took all these signature attributes as well.

I did not inherit any of the above traits with the exception of the creep smile, and was always the short cousin with the dark hair in the German clan of blonde giants.

p.s. Every six months, I have to call Paul or Heyhur to ask them, “Hey, what was the name of that industrial band from Nashville in the 80s/90s?” They tell me, and I immediately forget. The song is by that band.

p.p.s. I am going to Berlin.
