aubert of avranches

In the year 709 Aubert, the bishop of Avranches, suffering from a vision of the Archangel Michael driving a finger through his skull, built a shrine on an island originally called Mont Tombe off the coast of Normandy. The shrine was followed by monks and eventually a village around the monastery. At high tide it is truly an island city that seems to float on the water.
