Should PETA be supported? I just heard they kill 90% of animals in shelters. I also heard they put rat poison in show dogs' kennels and poisoned them all and a lot of them died? I don't think they should be supported because they're very hypocritical
PETA are problematic for many reasons. They are notorious for using shock tactics like sexist ad campaigns that purposely compare women to meat, fat shaming, racism (literally dressing up as KKK members) and a whole host of other offensive campaigns. It is rumoured that PETA kill homeless dogs and cats on mass, but I’ve never seen an authoritative source on it myself. Regardless, all no-kill shelters kill homeless animals because people refuse to stop breeding and buying them, so if true, PETA would be far from the only ones doing it.Though it is the least of their crimes I also find their endorsement of non-vegan celebrities as “animal rights icons” incredibly frustrating. I am not ignorant of the good PETA have done in bringing animal causes into the public eye, in advocating veganism and offering resources for vegans but they have done it in entirely the wrong way. Even if you genuinely don’t care about sexism or racism, from a solely animal rights perspective, they are not abolitionists; they have praised animal agriculture corporations for tiny welfare concessions, have supported “humane meat” in the past, have campaigned for welfarist legislation and have rubbed shoulders with huge animal abusing enterprises.
We have to remember that PETA is a corporation; even if their heart might be in the right place their practices are often abhorrent. I just do not believe that we as a movement have to shit on other movements to get our point across. I would point out though, that people who aren’t vegan or advocating for animals in any way themselves have no business being critical of how PETA treats animals, and they often do so purely in an attempt to discredit our cause.
