· Your artwork will be a placement print, in the centre of the tee.

· Please work to A3 portrait parameter, and the image resolution must be 300dpi.

· There is no limit on colour levels, world is your oyster there.

·  It must be your own original artwork, no copycats ya hear?

I just saw an ad (which triggered a mild migraine) for an asos “tumblr t-shirt competition.”

First of all:

They are claiming the right to feature your design even if you don’t win.

Second of all:

If they decide to sell your design you will get a flat payment of 500 sterling as an e-voucher…and that’s it. Also, their terms and conditions are contradictory - they both say they automatically claim all rights to all submissions and that you give them a royalty-free license to use your image for three years. Including selling non-winners. Oh, and you waive your moral rights too - meaning you don’t get credit and, thus, can’t use the design in your portfolio because you can’t prove it’s yours.

IOW: This is a rights grab. Don’t touch it.

Also, don’t go to their website to look - the same flashing, migraine-and-seizure-triggering image is right there.

Hey, ASOS, why don’t you PAY an illustrator to use there work instead of asking for free art and calling it a contest? ASOS is promoting a “competition” on tumblr where artist and illustrators get to submit there best work in hopes that ASOS will print on there shirts without any compensation to the artist. If you are a fellow artist/illustrator on tumblr who believes artists should be paid for their work, just say NO and reblog. Large companies can afford to pay for fresh new artists.

The award is of course the honor of being on one of their shirts (wah wah) and some store credit to buy clothes online.  I would argue that if an artist needs exposure that badly, they could probably use actual money to pay bills.  Either way artists will be submitting work on the speculation that they “might” win something.  That leaves artists making and submitting work for free without any compensation in the end.

Here is a nice little video explaining what spec work is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DsstOs-K7gk
