ask the boys

“H-Hello…! Uhm… Oh no no no- Please hold on! I-I was going to say something… Oh dear, I’m messing it all up! I’m sorry, just don’t go yet I promise I’ll remember!”

This guy got really popular really quickly so I made an ask blog for him! Water’s ask inbox is open but please be very careful, he’s quite shy! Reblogs are really appreciated!

“To all the boys I ever loved” written by Jenny Han and film by Netflix has many young adults and teenagers cheer for the “return” of Cheesy high school love stories. Many audiences say the adaptation of the book by Netflix is the best version they’ve seen so far, and definitely outweighs the kissing booth. What do you think of the movie so far? How well did it represent the book? And do you think a second movie will come?

Words cannot describe how happy I am that you are working so hard on this Raven Cycle project! The fact that you are not leaving the important stuff to anyone else and making sure your pride and joy is made exactly as you intended it to, not some baited piece of work that media is using for views, is honestly incredible. I know I'm speaking for a ton of people when I say I cannot wait to see how this turns out!

Dear voltorn-up-inside,

I’m glad readers are excited (it is exciting).

Most creators actually don’t get to work on their own adaptations, and honestly, I don’t know if that’s necessarily a bad thing. Prose and tv/film are two very different story-telling medias with very different strengths. The difference between them means that often significant changes must happen in order to make the story make sense, carry tension, or even feel the same as the original.

Imagine it: every time a character thinks of a piece of world-building without saying it aloud, a show would need to find a way to demonstrate it. Every time a brief memory flickers, the show has to decide if that information needs to happen in a full on flashback or if whatever it’s conveying can happen later. A letter appears on page. Does the tv character read it out loud? Do you show it? Better be short or you’ll be making viewers stare at it a long time. A shocking magical thing happens to a character but there’s no one else around to comment upon the rules of whatever just happened. Does your character … deliver a monologue?

No.

You have to find ways to revise and shape and clarify and streamline. You’re trying to make it feel like it’s the same, even when it can’t be blow-for-blow the same. Making that shift can be a pretty tall order for someone who’s very close to the work — anyone who’s revised their own writing knows that objectivity is a tricky thing. An author isn’t necessarily the best at assessing their own work, and is certainly not the only one who can. My role in this was quite accidental, but I had a blast writing the pilot. It was very satisfying to look around corners I didn’t get a chance to look around in the novel.

It’s gonna be cool.
