What is the most emabarrasing thing the diaboys ever did? Thanks mun *hugs you*
Shu: It was the middle of a test and as soon as people were finished, they were required to either read silently or work on other work. This lazy vampire didn’t even get half-way through the test before snoozing on top of his desk. Actually, none of the students were able to get halfway through the test because of the loud snoring that was disrupting them. Students awkwardly exchanged looks, the hottest and most mysterious guy in their class was snoring like jack hammer in the middle of a quiet test. Finally, the cutest girl in class decided to shake him awake and Shu awoke to her pretty face…and the faces of the other students. “You’ve got drool…on your chin” the girl pointed out which Shu rubbed off quickly. He ended up failing that test.
Reiji: He was at the library, as usual, checking out one of his favorite classics, Fahrenheit 451, which he decided to reread. He wanted to make his trip as quick as possible because he didn’t like being surrounded by humans, so he sped his way to the exact shelf it was located (being the nerd he is, he knew the whole dewey decimal system and was able to find books rather quickly.) He tried to quickly take the book off the shelf, but in result, the rest of the books began to topple over and loudly hit the ground. Since the library was silent, it echoed throughout and captured everyone’s attention, plus a mean stare from the librarian. Lets just say he never stepped foot in that place again.
Ayato: “I’ll make a shot for you babe” Ayato cooed to this potential fling he’s been chatting up with. “I’ll only focus on you then” the girl flirted back, a faint blush tinted her cheeks. An angry coach yelling for Ayato cut off the connection between them and the vampire made his way over to the team. After a long game, it was now the final quarter and both teams were tied. Ayato’s teammate managed to get the ball and passed it on to him. With the ball in hand, Ayato dribbled his way to the other side of the court. The crowd was cheers driving him on and him feeling as victorious as ever. He decided to go for a three pointer and made sure his girl was watching. However, Lady Luck was not on his side tonight for not only did the basketball miss but it managed to ricochet off the hoop and onto his face. The cheers of the audience turned to laughter. Reiji helped treat the nosebleed but he couldn’t treat the emotional toll it took on Ayato that night.
Kanato: It was another choir concert preformed at his school, which of course is always civilized and well-organized, until Kanato had a little slip-up that night. The group made their way onto the stage, with the whole audience silently watching, making their way onto the stand. They all got into their rows, just about to begin singing their first song, until Kanato noticed the girl in front of him had amazing smelling hair. The scent of coconuts filled his senses, and he uncontrollably leaned over a little bit just to get a better whiff of the scent. In result, his foot slipped, and he fell right on top of the girl, and she fell on top of the next girl, and so on until it created a domino-like effect and everyone was on the floor before they could even start performing. His first reaction was to blame the girl he disliked in the choir, but the thought of it to this day still brings him red to the cheeks.
Laito: Detention is not something a normal person would aim for but Laito purposefully got it in order to get alone time with a beautiful teacher just recently hired He licked his lips as he studied his new prey who was innocently playing sudoku to pass the time. Not standing the tension, Laito decided to get up and make his way over to her. “May I help you Mr. Sakamaki?” the teacher asked not looking up from her sudoku. “Mmm~ I’m bored… yknow it’s kind of frustrating being in the same room with such a beauty such as yourself and not taking advantage~” Laito purred as he eyed her figure. Despite the blush creeping on her cheeks, the teacher just sighed and looked up at him. “Well isn’t that a shame?” she replied in a montone voice. “Playing hard to get~? Tell me what you want to do with bad student such as myse-” his seductive words were interrupted by a loud belch escaping his lips. The teacher couldn’t help but burst out in laughter at the embarrassed vampire. When she calmed down she showed her finger, a golden wedding ring was glowing on it. “I want a bad student like you to go sit down”.
Subaru: “Subaruuuuuu~” he heard his brothers teasingly say from the other room, along with laughter. “Tch…” Subaru stormed into the other room to find the vampires all huddled around. “What the fuck do you want!?” It wasn’t until Ayato held up one of his dirty pornographic magazines when he knew that this night wasn’t going to end well. “Hahahahahh look what we found!” Ayato teased. “Ah, my little brother is so lewd nfufu~” Laito added. Even Shu started laughing and teasing the red-faced vampire, much to his dismay. All Subaru could do was snatch the magazine back and hurry out of the room, when Laito called out “Better not leave your stuff out in the open next time.” In rage, Subaru punched the wall along with shouting “STAY THE HELL OUT OF MY SHIT!!” and a slam of his door. That’s when they all shut up.
Ruki: The horse trotted along the field as Ruki pulled on the reins to quickly stop it. “She’s a beautiful one isn’t she?” The owner of the horse stables called out to him. “Mhmm” Ruki replied as he pet the soft mane of the horse. Horseback riding was a relaxing pastime for him besides reading and cooking. As the apathetic vampire rode along on the horse, he seemed to attract a group of females who were bashfully observing him. What Ruki didn’t know, however, is that his brothers managed to find out his whereabouts and decided to pay him a surprise visit. “HEY RUKI!!!!” Yuma yelled out at his brother. The loud voice ended up spooking the horse which made it suddenly stand on his hind legs and having Ruki fall right off onto the ground in front of his brothers and group of girls. Legends today say that Yuma’s ear still hurts from the scolding he received.
Kou: His school was hosting a fancy ballroom dance, and the faculty asked him to sing at this one. It was his first time, although he’d performed on stage millions of times, this was different. People would be dancing to his voice, so he had to be perfect. He put on his finest tux and stepped onto the stage. He felt a little more nervous since he was surrounded by people he went to school with, therefore his voice was a little shaky. He sang his way through the first few songs beautifully, up until he reached his last song. As everyone slow danced, it was his moment. He tried to hold out his note for as long as possible, but his voice cracked midway. Not just a subtle crack, it was very loud and squeaky. Everyone turned their heads and stared, some chuckled a little, and Kou just played it cool and continued the song until the end when he got off the stage and scurried away. His fangirls tried comforting him by telling him he did amazing, but he pretty much just told them to screw off and went straight home. It was probably the worst day of his life.
Yuma: “Is this your garden Yuma?” Karlheinz asked the nervous young man. The Vampire King decided to pay a visit to the Mukami’s to see how they were doing. Despite this man saving them and raising the four, they couldn’t help but feel at nervous and in awe at his presence. “Y-yeah. I can show you around if you like” Yuma replied, cursing at himself for stuttering. He led Karlheinz around, explaining the various amounts of vegetables he grew. Everything was going smoothly until Yuma stepped on a rotten tomato that was on the ground and slipped onto the ground. Both his head and tail bone throbbed as he groaned and sat up. He was in a little trance for a bit, wondering what just happened until a hand broke him out of it. Karlheinz looked down on him, smiling, as he offered to help him up. Yuma took his hand with his own shaky ones.
Azusa: It was his lover’s birthday that day, and he decided to buy everything she loves and wrap it together into a present. He was so caught up in putting it together, he had no idea that he wrapped up his knife in the gift, too. Her handed her the gift and she smiled and opened it. When the knife was revealed, she had the most terrified look on her face. She pulled it out and saw stains of blood all over it, wondering why the hell he would give her something like that. He spent the whole day apologizing to her.
Anonymous Asked: “Hiiii! So I’m writing a story that is set in a vampire universe where the main character is a doppelgänger and the king of vampires ends up turning because she reminded him of his past lover who was murdered by witches. My question is what are some prompts for when she asks him about her and he tries to explain who she was and how much she meant to him and what exactly happened the day she was murdered?”
Anonymous Asked: “Vampire King anon here again! Thank you so much for taking the time out to answer my ask ^_^, I was wondering if I could just get some random snarky dialogue prompts. Like he’s trying to help her with her transition but, she just doesnt want anything to do with her… something to that effect.”
1. “Why would you do this to me? What was the point?”
“It will sound like madness to you.”
2. “You understand that I’m not her, right? Turning me into this… It didn’t make me her.”
“Of course I understand. I don’t expect you to be her. But you are far too much of her for me to let you die.”
“You seriously aren’t getting this.”
3. “Just leave me alone, already!”
“I’ll never let you go, my darling. Never again.”
“Are there vampire police around? Because that would be seriously helpful.”
4. “You’ll be craving human blood soon. Let me bring you a suitable meal.”
“No offense, but I’d rather just… Not consuming the life essence of my friends and family, thanks.”
5. “What if I just run out into the sunlight? I mean, how exactly do you plan on stopping me?”
“You’d never get past my guards, darling.”
“Do you have any idea how messed up this is?”
6. “You didn’t even ask me if I wanted to be a vampire. I don’t. I don’t want to live forever, and watch everyone I love die.”
“Rest assured, my love. In time, you will protect your heart instinctively. You will love no one but me.”
“In what freakish universe is that supposed to be reassuring?”
7. “Tell me about her? This woman you keep calling me?”
“My first love. My last love. The day she died, well… They came for her. They’ll come for you, too, but this time, you can defend yourself.”
“From anyone but you.”
“That is the price, I’m afraid. But you have nothing to fear from me.”
~I found the first ask buried in my askbox, and decided to hit two birds with one stone, so to speak! I hope these help!~
Whelp, this chapter is a quintessential case of the old adage “be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.” Nothing like being handed everything I ever wanted plot progression-wise on a silver platter for the small upfront price of the last shred of integrity of the only character I still enjoyed. A faustian bargain if ever I saw one. Bad form, Hino, bad form.
For a great many reasons, it’s taken me this long to be able to address this chapter. I’m not sure how this post is going to go; I’m constantly vacillating between frustration, contempt, disdain, disgust, dismay, disappointment, detachment, self-mockery, and rage when I think about this chapter. I’ve lost all respect for Zero, and despite what happened this chapter Yuuki continues to fail to return to my good graces and my sympathy for her is all played out. All I’m left with is a deep sense of awe that a single creator is capable of destroying such a promising work with such brutal efficiency no matter what opportunities to salvage it come her way. It’s truly a wonder.
The two prelude posts I wrote to help contextualize my review can be found here and here. If you haven’t read the chapter yet, a variety of scanlations are floating around the corners of the internet. Pick any one of them–they’re all roughly equivalent, give or take a line or two. Otherwise, let’s begin this debacle.
Note to the perpetually offended: This post is pure “zeki criticism” and I have tagged it as such for your convenience. Please blacklist accordingly or block my account to preserve your sanity and my patience. I’ve also tagged it “anti ky” for the sensitives from the other camp.
You felt your heart shatter at the boys words. Was he telling the truth about Yugyeom? Would a person who you barely even knew of take the fall for you if he knew you were safe and sound with his ex-teammates? Did he really go out of his way and leave them just so he could try and see you again?
You looked at Bambam with sad eyes, watching him intently as he took in a deep breath. He turned away from you, rubbing the back of his neck slightly before sliding his hands into his pockets. “That’s why I don’t like you. Even though you didn’t intentionally do it, he left the team because of you. He left me, because of you. And now i’m all alone here. Him and I were best friends. He was the only friend I had for a long, long time, even before I was turned.. He was the only person I had before then, and now that he’s gone, I get this pain in my chest whenever I think about him..”
“I’m sorry, Bambam,” You whispered, looking down as you felt your heart clench,, “I’m sorry Yugyeom went after to me, even after all of this time of not seeing me. I’m sorry he left me because he thought he would be able to see me. If I were you, I would be mad at me too. Have you ever tried to contact him after the fact?”
“We had to cut off all contact with them as soon as they were inducted into the Kin. We had to move bases once or twice because they kept finding out where we lived. This is our third base since then. Jaebum was the one who suggested we live here even though we found a cheaper and better apartment a couple of hours away. Now I see why he did that.”
You sighed softly, sitting down while gently pulling on his hand, attempting to get his attention as you stared up at him.
“How can I make you forgive me? I don’t want there to be any harsh feelings in between us. Because honestly, you seem like a pretty nice guy, despite the mean demeanor you put on whenever I come into the room.”
“Could you bring Yugyeom back to us?” Bambam said, looking away from you, but sitting back on the couch next to you. “I know you can’t. That was more of a rhetorical question. I guess I could work more on trying to accept you and not hate you, but it’s going to be hard.”
You looked down at your hands, sighing gently. “Bambam, I don’t know why, but I get this feeling that everything will be okay soon. With time, of course.”
“What do you mean everything will be okay?”
“I mean… Your team. If something major happens, I think… I think the team will be okay. Maybe you guys will reunite one day.”
“What? Can you like, tell the future or something?”
“No,” you chuckled softly, looking at your hands, “Like you said, you get a feeling when you think about Yugyeom? I get a similar feeling, only when I think about the future of your team.”
The stayed quiet for a few moments. “Can…Can you show me a picture of Yugyeom? I mean.. I’ve seen a picture of him in my head from an old memory, but I didn’t really get a good look-or maybe a good memory of him.”
“Why?” Bambam hissed, his cold demeanor showing up again after you thought you had finally ended it,, “Are you going to try and seduce him like you somehow got Jaebum? Oh wait, you can’t see him because he went after you already.”
“Hey,” you said softly, resting a hand on his shoulder, his shoulder becoming more tense at your touch, “Don’t speak to me like that, please. I’m trying to bury whatever is happening between us so you and I can both be happy, and so Jaebum and Jackson don’t shout at you anymore. “
Bambam looked at you through his peripherals, letting a soft sigh fall from his lips before pulling out his phone. “Alright, fine. I’ll let you see a picture of him.”
He opened his phone and went through his photos, until he settled on one with what seemed like his former team. He zoomed in on one with dark blue, almost black hair, who had his arms around both Bambam and Youngjae while he smiled.
“That’s him,” Bambam said, placing the phone in your hand, “He’s dyed his hair since you last saw him though. He usually has red hair.”
“Ah,” you chuckled softly, nodding at Bambam as you looked at the picture, “Yeah, I remember his face now. I saw him sitting on the couch in one of the memories I had of him.”
“Him and I used to watch you,” Bambam explained, “But it was mostly him. I would just run out and get us food, because he never wanted to leave you alone. He really cared for you as if you were his younger sister, because he never had any family members besides his mom. It kind of explains why he was so avid on looking for you, because of the fact that in his mind, you’re the only living family member he has left.”
After a moment, Bambam sighed, taking the phone out of his hands, “Can I ask you a question?”
“Hit me,” You said, rubbing your hands on your thighs, ask me anything.”
“If somehow,” Bambam rubbed his hands over his face, “If somehow, your feeling is right, and we do come together as a pack again, and this is high-reaching, I know… But if we do, Can you please treat Yugyeom as if you were his actual sister? Whenever he thought about having no family, he would get really sad, and he’d even cry sometimes. It really hurts, seeing him hurt, because him and Youngjae are some of the happiest people in our team. So, if we were to become a group again, and you were to not treat him as if he was your brother, he would be really hurt. And I don’t want to see him hurt like the way he was when he lost both you and his mom. I don’t want to see that Yugyeom ever again.”
“But wait,” you paused, “Didn’t you say that you two got turned together? I thought that… That his mom was a vampire as well? How does that work?”
“Well, technically we didn’t get turned together, but I say that because he was the one who turned me. See; vampires age slowly, and we stop aging at around thirty, maybe a little older. We age ten years every one-hundred years. Yugyeom was one-hundred and sixty when I met him for the first time, still. I was only seven, though. He became like an older brother figure to me, I guess. Does that make any sense?”
“No,” you sighed, sitting back, “But i’m still interested. Continue.”
“So, he was one-hundred sixty. But when I turned seventeen, he turned one hundred-seventy. So he was technically seventeen because every ten years they age one year, since they age ten years every one-hundred years. Now does it make sense?”
“Oh, yeah,” you nodded softly, “So what happened? Did you ask him to turn you?”
“I did,” he nodded, “I wanted to be a vampire, very badly. They say that becoming a vampire is one of the worst things for you, because you have to watch everyone you love die off eventually, but in reality, I had no one else in my life besides of Yugyeom. So I asked him to turn me. It didn’t hurt at all, surprisingly. I think from the team, I was the only one to technically be turned, but that’s besides the point. I asked you a question.”
You looked at him softly, suddenly understanding as to why he had such an attachment to Yugyeom. “Alright Bambam,. I promise to treat Yugyeom as if he were my older brother. .”
“Thank you,” Bambam smiled slightly, quickly wiping it off of his face, “That made me hate you a little less.”
“Hey, it’s progress isn’t it?” You asked, smiling at him as you bumped your shoulder with his.
“Now, I didn’t know much about the vampire queen before I was turned,” he sighed, turning to you slightly and lifting his legs up slightly from the ground, tucking them in between you while his hands went to wrap underneath his knees, “What was she like?”
“My mom?” you asked softly, looking over to the piles of books Youngjae had brought you.
“From what I read… My mom was a scientist. She was a very well-known scientist in the human world, and aparetnly well-known in the Vampire world as well. But before she had tried to infuse her blood with the plasma of a vampire, she was never really intrigued into that. It’s when she met my dad-”
“Was he the king?” Bambam asked softly.
“No, he wasn’t the vampire king or anything like that,” You hummed, “My dad saved my mom from a vampire attack while she was working in her lab one late afternoon, or so I read. The Kin had broken into her lab because they had heard that a scientist in the human realm had come up with a serum that could eliminate all fighting cells in the body within seconds, and kill her prey. That scientist was my mom, which is kind of ironic because from the personality things and traits i’ve read about her, she seemed as if she wouldn’t hurt anyone. She didn’t do this on purpose, which is why when she found out that something that she created did that, she completely got rid of the serum. But The Kin attacked her anyway. My dad was a vampire who was active in the human realm, among one of the strongest here, and was set out to stop any active Kin members if they were a flight-risk and could potentially hurt someone. So my dad took my mom away before she could be physically attacked. And they fell in love. But he refused to turn her into a vampire, because he didn’t want to have her live with the curse he lives with.”
“He lived with a curse?”
“Not a real one. It’s like what you said before. He didn’t want her to live with the fact that she would eventually have to watch everyone, including her mom, die at some point. And he knew she couldn’t handle that. But they stayed in the Vampire realm with him, working on more science and serums that she believed, would bring both realms closer to peace. And with those Serums, she corrected the evil Kin members, but she didn’t do it with all of them, which is why The Kin was able to somehow to re-hatch itself after a while. My mom was able to take the throne after mostly eliminating The Kin, and because she was sweet and kind to everyone in the Vampire realm. But then… The Kin came back and killed both her and my dad and took over the throne. And now… That’s what the Vampire realm has turned into. And The Kin are looking for me now, because they think that since i’m her offspring and I have Vampire aspects that can be awoken in me by being turned, that I can somehow come to power and rule the same way she did. But I don’t think I would ever be able to do that.
“And why not?” Bambam said softly, “From what I see now, you seem very positive about almost anything. And you seem super nice as well.”
“Aw, does this mean you don’t hate me anymore?” You giggled gently, “That makes me happy.”
“I hate you a little less I said,” Bambam mumbled, “I don’t like you yet. But as I was saying… You seem fit to rule a kingdom. And with Jinyoung, or Jaebum by your side, i’m almost positive that you can do anything, especially rule another realm..”
“I don’t understand how i’m destined to be with two people,” you sighed into your hands, running your hands through your hair, “I just don’t understand it. Maybe there’s a book on it somewhere, but I would have to wait for Youngjae to get back so he can get me more books from the Vampire realm.”
“We can go to the library,” Bambam said to you, looking around slightly, “You know, none of the boys are here right now. It’s just you and me. And the boys said that they won’t be back until later tonight. Jaebum says I can’t handle the light, but I can.”
“What are you trying to get at, Bambam,” you said hesitantly, watching as a devious smile found its way to his lips.
“I say, we sneak you out. Just for a little while. I’ll come with you, because I can handle light well despite what Jaebum says. As long as we don’t stay out until late tonight, and you can quickly get your book, I think we can pull it off.”
“But, what i-”
“Sh,” Bambam hushed, standing up from his seat, “The Kin won’t catch you, (Y/N). I’ll make sure of it. Jaebum says i’m weak, but i’m stronger than I look. If anyone tries to come near you, I will protect you, and I promise you that. We’ll be quick, in and out, no one will even notice that we are gone!”
You shook your head slightly, “I don’t know Bambam…”
“Come on,” Bambam whined, taking your arm and pulling on it. “Let’s do it. Or are you too scared?”
The Tarot Card Symbolism in ‘Adventure Time: Stakes’
Around episode four of ‘Stakes’, something occurred to me: almost every single one of the vampires from Marceline’s past is named after a card from the Major Arcana of a Tarot Card deck. Not only that, but the entire mini-series is soaked in references to the cards and their meanings. This is my attempt to try and analyze at least the most obvious symbolism, though knowing the subtly of this show and my own relatively limited knowledge, it’s very possible/likely I’ve missed some things.
But anyway, let’s get started with:
0: The Fool
The Fool is the very first card in the Major Arcana; it represents boundless potential and the beginning of journeys, something which distinctly mirrors this vampire’s role in Marceline’s story. He’s the first ‘main’ vampire that Marceline slays, the one which starts giving her the abilities to take down the others’. Notably, the traditional depiction of the Fool is of a young child with a dog, taking a step off of a cliff; a wonderful parallel to the young Marceline with her own dog, enjoying the power of flight for the first time.
3: The Empress
This card, as you might expect, depicts a regal woman- usually blonde- sceptre in hand, a picture of control. This is the card of female power, representing beauty, creativity, fertility, luxury, grace and love.
Obviously, the vampire with this name embodies certain aspects of this over others. This Empress is all about luxury, being served upon and drinking the finest of blood (with flecks of gold in it!) She literally controls others through mind control, and though Ice King is immune to those effects, he is insnared by her beauty (and her sexuality).
Grace and love, though? Eh, not so much. However, the greater scope of the episode ‘The Empress Eyes’, is all about love. It’s about Marcy coming to try and save her old friend Simon, even though he (as always) doesn’t even realise he needs saving. At the end, it’s about her apologising for going out of face the vampires alone, and accepting her friends’ help and love.
5: The Hierophant
Sometimes called ‘The High Priest’ or ‘The Pope’, this card usually depicts a religious figure with his hand raised. He represents religion, obviously, but also tradition and conformity. This, of course, perfectly captures the vampire with this name. He is described as an ‘old vampire’, rigid in following the traditions and rules of the past, even when they actively work against him in this new world of Ooo. He refuses to make a truce, or to switch over to a diet of red or even animal blood, despite now existing in a world with virtually no humans left. Ultimately, he is killed by his rules, burned alive after being thrown into a house (read: Jake) without invitation.
However, I think the Hierophant’s existence in the story plays a larger symbolism. ‘Stakes’ is, ultimately, a story of change. Marceline chooses to give up her vampirism, in order to give a chance to grow up and mature, only to discover herself frightened by the uncertainty of the unknown. She is then given a choice; conform to the old traditions, kill the vampire king and become a vampire again, or break the cycle. By choosing the latter, she affectively avoids the same self-destruction of the Hierophant.
Not that the Hierophant isn’t an entirely negative card. In fact, it can mean a call to spirituality, or advise someone about joining a group. Considering this story is about Marcy self-growth, and coming to accept her friends’ support and solidarity, it would be foolish to ignore this interpretation.
18: The Moon
This is the card of intuition, the subconscious, and dreams. This makes sense considering that throughout ‘Take Her Back’, Marceline is trapped in a coma, experiencing vivid dreams. This card usually depicts the moon over a pool of water, explaining why this his vampire made her home on a boat. This card deals with fears, securities and anxieties, which we see demonstrated in Marcy’s dreams. One, features Marcy herself, living in Bonnie’s cabin, having grown old and near dying, while the still eternally young Princess Bubblegum sings with her. This, presumably, suggests that Marcy wasn’t as unconcerned about giving away her own immortality as she pretended. Earlier in the episode, we also see her dreaming about Simon and Betty; now both cured, happily married and acting as the parental figures they were never able to be. It shows her own regrets about her inability to help her dear Simon. However, the purpose of the Moon card is coming to recognize your anxieties, and channel them into a positive way- an emotional healing. Having internalized the Moon suggests hopeful things about Marcy’s future.
4: The Emperor (The King?)
There is no card called ‘The King’; there is, however, one called ‘The Emperor’, which the Vampire King could have been thematically named after. It is the card of authority and structure, of father-figures. This embodies much of the Vampire King’s person. He is (or rather, was) the leader of the Vampires, and even after he expresses a desire to want to leave that role, he still does his best to guide and lead Marcy, to be a figure of wisdom for her.
And considering the sentiments expressed by the Vampire King, wouldn’t it make sense for him to the one vampire not expressly named after a Tarot Card? Which leads us to…
“I’m not afraid of the unknown! I have the power to change destiny! We are vampires! You weigh the scales of fate! Spill my guts, or face the unknown!”
Justice is the card of, well, justice- but also fairness, truth, and law. The Vampire King presents Marceline with a choice; she can do what she’s always done, and slay the Vampire King, even though he professes to have reformed. Just as the figure from the card holds a sword in one hand, Marcy holds a stake; but at the same time, she has a chance to deliver fairness.
7: The Chariot
“My path runs straight into the void- on a sick, flaming chariot!”
The Chariot is the card of will, control, and determination. It depicts a man riding out on a chariot, away from civilization to find spiritual attainment. It is not difficult to see the clear parallels to VK’s decision in this episode; he is willing to face the unknown, in order to break free from the dark fate of being a vampire, and make his own decisions.
10: The Wheel of Fortune
No, not the game show.
‘By the way, I will not bite… but turning you would subjugate me to the Wheel of Fortune! For I am a king, not a hamster!’
The Wheel of Fortune is the card of cycles, of karma, of change, of good luck, and success. The themes of cycles, of fate- but also of the importance of change- are some of the most central themes of these eight episodes. See this first comment The Vampire King makes, when he’s trying to convince our heroes that he truly does wish to reform.
‘This is the Old Way… agents of darkness and light, in a tug of war. But now, a creature can step out of that struggle.’
Or again, later, this exchange he has with Marceline.
VK: Tell me, what’s the one thing you’ve noticed about the world, since you beat me all those hundreds of years ago? M: Everything repeats, over and over again. No one learns anything. Because no one lives long enough to see the pattern, I guess. VK: But you’ve lived long enough.
VK resents the Wheel of Fortune, resents the cyclical nature of reality. He hates how he and everyone else in existence is forced to do the same thing, again and again, never learning or trying anything new.
Marceline, ultimately, does see VK’s point. She cannot just continue doing things just because that’s how she’s always done it in the past, just because she’s afraid of the unknown.
But this card is also about change, and that’s an element of it that both characters appreciate. The Vampire King, ultimately, wants meaningful change. Marceline, too, wanted the chance to grow up- to finally move past the unhealthy emotional state of arrested development she became trapped in when she was originally turned. The song of the mini-series, ‘Everything Stays’, is even about how change, though sometimes difficult to see, is inescapable.

8: … Marceline?
Even though it is never explicitly mentioned, I think there is at least one other Tarot card represented by ‘Stakes’; “Strength”.
In the final two episodes, The Vampire King asked to have his vampire essence removed from his body, so that he can become mortal. When this is accomplished, her returns to his natural state- an ordinary, tame, lion. Later, when his vampire essence is spilled, it transforms into a terrible dark cloud, vaguely shaped like a monstrous lion, which spreads destruction across the land. At first, Marceline refuses to fight, feeling exhausted and defeated, seeing no point in facing the uncertainty ahead. After an (accidental) pep talk from Simon, however, she finds her inner strength, and overpowers the vampiric lion spirit, taking it into herself. In the very final episode, she discovers that the Vampire King still resides in her- though whether as a literal, separate entity, or just some element of her subconscious, remains ambiguous.
So how about the eighth card of the Major Arcana, strength? Traditionally, this depicts a beautiful young woman, calm and peaceful, taking a lion by the jaws, subduing it. Often, above her head floats the infinity symbol.
Marceline finds her inner strength. She fights the lion, not with her usual anger and ferocity, but through peace and determination, and the lion yields to her. It comes under her control. And in doing so, she regains her immortal nature, having now finally been given the chance to grow, and to learn.
Marceline the Vampire Queen, too, is represented by a Tarot card. Strength.
Can I request a few headcannons on Subaru and/or Azusa if they were vampire king???
No problem! Thank you for the ask!
Head-Canon: Subaru & Azusa as the Vampire King
- Subaru would have a very strong demeanor, so most people would be afraid of him.
- People would often compare his looks to his father, which would really piss him off.
- He would only have children with one lover.
- He would try his hardest to be the exact opposite of his father.
- Subaru would have an extensive flower garden, with practically every flower known to man, and demon kind.
- Azusa would be a quiet ruler. His silence makes people uncomfortable because they can never tell what he is thinking
- I can imagine him having a throne like the one on game of thrones (because of all of the knives and swords)
- Azusa would have an even more extensive knife collection than he had before he became Vampire King.
- He is very kind and often reaches out to those in need, so he is always willing to hear counsel of those with any issue.
