I'm trying to slot the Inners into RPG types, but I'm stuck on Minako and Rei. Usagi is defense (packs a fuck of a punch, sure, but she's more Bastion than Soldier 76), Ami is support (a Symmetra kind of support), and Mako is undoubtedly the tank, but I'm not sure if Minako is dps and Rei is attack, or vice versa. Help please?
Hmm, I think I’m having trouble figuring out what kind of archetype system you’re using here. Your examples are all Overwatch, but I’m struggling to follow you there. For one, there are only four classes in Overwatch and five Senshi (which you know, there’s no law against doubling up, but you seem to be striving for a unique class for each). Then you mention Usagi as defense but not like Soldier 76 defense, but he’s an offensive character in the game not defensive. And I’m not really sure then what you mean as the basic difference, from a character perspective, between “attack” and “dps” (dps being typically offensive-style characters).
BASICALLY I’M CONFUSED ALL AROUND HERE. So I’ll just try to answer the basic question of “Which RPG archetypes do you think best fit the Inner Senshi?” All my opinion, of course.
Totally with you on Mako as a tank class. The first line of offense and defense, looking to be the damage absorbing meat shield. It doesn’t mean she doesn’t pack a punch on her own, but sucking up the damage so the others don’t have to is her main deal. (If we look to parallel her with Overwatch character powersets, I’d say Mako is Reinhardt.)
I think Usagi is more a healer/cleric type: useful for offense in specific circumstances, but best at buffing/supporting the others and keeping them on their feet. This is obviously going a bit outside the “Usagi kills everyone all the time” thing, and keeping more in line of how I think she’d fit into a combat situation if it weren’t her name in the title. (In terms of Overwatch, I think Usagi’s powerset aligns best with Mercy. She’s squishy as hell, too, and prone to screaming when anyone so much as breathes on her.)
Ami, I see as defense. She does have some offensive capabilities of course, but mostly where she thrives is in area effects and crowd control. Mist clouds, freezing enemies. Manipulating the environment (and information/strategy) is Ami’s domain. (For Overwatch, it feels a bit like a gimme, but I’d have to go with Mei.)
Bringing us to your initial question marks: Rei and Minako.
I see Rei as pure offense. A bit better off than your “glass cannon” types, she can certainly take a hit or two. But Rei’s primary battlefield purpose is to TORCH FUCKING EVERYTHING. This is the woman whose first response to every slightest inconvenience is “BURNING MANDALA”. Mako may be first on the line, but it’s usually because she had to run faster than Rei to get the fuck in front of her. (In Overwatch terms, I’d pair Rei with Pharah’s powerset for the range and explosive potential.)
This leaves us with Minako. who I’d best translate into a bardic type. Minako’s got the most versatility of the Inners, and like bards, she can thrive in an offense or defense capacity as needed. Whether it’s a well-timed Love Me Chain to pull an ally out of the way or a Crescent Beam to the enemy’s face, Minako can do it all. (Her Overwatch counterpart best fits as Lucio, I think. Particularly in the right hands, he can be invaluable support or a devastating attacker. He’s also consistently passed up for the glory of Play of the Game, SOMETHING TO WHICH MINAKO DEEPLY RELATES.)
I'm the opposite of you re: spoilers in that I always read them before I consume any media. It's an anxiety thing, in that if certain things upset me I'll dwell on them forever and I don't yet have a strict definition of what those things are. So the upset of unpleasant surprises outweighs the joy of pleasant ones. Is that weird?
I don’t think so. There’s no wrong way to watch something, I don’t think, and that includes whatever steps you need to take to properly enjoy it. I can completely get having so much anxiety about something that it ruins an experience. Why put yourself through all that if you don’t have to?
Honestly, given the glut of spoilers available out there, and the general lack of thought and respect for NOT spoiling people, I’d say that if anyone is being “weird” about it, it’s me.
Even if you were, though, who cares? You’re not hurting anybody, you’re not affecting how anyone else has to experience something. If somebody doesn’t get it, that’s their problem.
Since it seems that as long as a star seed is intact, a senshi's body can be restored... Do you think Aluminum Seiren and Lead Crow were revived in their respective home planets?
Basically Galaxia got to fuck off with every Star Seed in the known universe, which seems to me rather like telling a drug addict who agreed to rehab five seconds ago to drive themselves there alone in Uhaul full of pills BUT OKAY, and there’s absolutely no clue what she’s even intending to DO. Is she returning them to their home planets? If she going to somehow reawaken them? Is that even feasible if they’ve been dead for a while? What about the ones where their planet was destroyed, where the fuck do they go?
Not to mention the rather messy prospect for Crow in that her body got sucked into a black hole. Is she still alive? Can she be “reborn” from her Star Seed if her body was never freed from the bracelets?
(DON’T GET ME WRONG I FULLY INTEND TO BUILD UP TO “SIREN AND GANGSTER MOUSE’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE” WHEREIN THEY RETURN TO EARTH AND ENLIST OUR GIRLS’ HELP IN TRAVELING THROUGH DIMENSIONS TO RECOVER LEAD CROW BUT THAT IS A TALE FOR ANOTHER TIME)
Basically though, who the hell knows. You could easily do it any way you wanted, I think. Maybe the Senshi got to come back to Usagi because they’d just died within the past twelve hours. Maybe Mamoru could do it too only because Chibs2 deliberately picked him out and brought him back. Maybe everyone else in the universe is fucked and Galaxia can discover that one irreversible death after another.
Whatever gets chosen, I just wanted to say thank you so much for the giftening. I'm so excited for it - I applied for timeoff for that week yesterday and just got a text that it had been approved. I can't wait!
I’ve been sitting on this a bit because HOW DOES ONE RESPOND. It seems insufficient to say that I’m flattered you’d take your vacation time – PRE-ARRANGED your vacation time – for this little thing I’m doing. But flattered I am. Touched, humbled, lots and lots of words.
The response has been more than I was hoping (I think we’ve crushed last year’s voting), but this is something special even above that. I’m so glad you’re looking forward to it that much, and I hope to prove worthy of your time off.
SLEEP IN AND STUFF TOO THOUGH THAT IS ALSO WHAT VACATIONS ARE FOR
You haven't really paid much attention to Rei Hino in your rewatch which is too bad because I think you might kind of like her if you give her a chance. I hope in your continued rewatches you get a better appreciation for her.
It’s true, my lack of focus on Rei is criminal, really. I must apologize for not giving her all proper consideration. I can only promise to try harder in the future. I’m certain that with enough effort, I’ll finally be able to overcome this Rei Hino-sized block I struggle with, and find some way, some how, to enjoy her on some level.
Will you include sailor v manga in the whole sailor moon manga project? Or probably make it a warm up before the sailor moon manga? BTW, your pgsm blogs doesn't fail to lighten my mood, i know your pgsm liveblogs will be glorious, and i'm excited.
I’m SO excited for PGSM. Sad as I’ve been to finish the anime, PGSM on the horizon has been a beacon.
As for Sailor V, yeah, I plan to make that part of doing the manga as well. I’m not sure if it’ll be first or what yet, but I’ll come to you guys for advice on reading order when I’m ready to start the manga. (Which will be shortly after THE GIFTENING, I’m thinking. General schedules and plans coming in the next week or so.)
YOUR SIMSHI ARE THE ABSOLUTELY PRECIOUS I LOVE THEM
I LOVE THAT YOU LOVE THEM
I love them, too. It’s a pity they don’t come out too terribly often. But I’m striving to make this a much more organized year, and I’d like to do some game liveblog/livestream stuff on the regular, say every other week or so. SO PERHAPS WE WILL SEE THEM MORE OFTEN AFTER ALL
