How Asian-Americans Have Redefined What It Means To Be American
Steve Inskeep talks to historian Erika Lee about her new book, The Making of Asian America: A History.

“Asians had been migrating to the Americas along with the Spanish colonizers dating back to 1560s and the Manila Galleon Trade that brought Chinese and other Asian luxury goods, spices, jewels to New Spain. And along with those goods came about 40 to 100,000 Asians, Filipinos, Chinese, South Asians, coming as sailors, coming as slaves and coming as servants.”

“This was one of the silences, my grandmother refused to talk about how she came to the United States.”

Indonesian Beef Rendang

Nick and I recently tied the knot in Bali, Indonesia. Why did we choose Bali for our wedding? Well, we loved our time living in and travelling around Asia, so we wanted to return to one of our favourite (and most romantic) destinations. During our two weeks away, there was one dish that appeared on practically every restaurant menu - beef rendang.

This famous Indonesian dish is made by slowly cooking meat in a variety of spices and coconut milk until most of the liquid has evaporated to give a rich, spicy curry.

2010 Robert Sinskey Vineyards Aries Pinot Noir

I love Sinskey wines! This is no exception. Red cherry, kola nut, fresh twigs, tea, Asian spices, touch of cardamom, and red florals on the nose. Riper on the palate with much of the same bouquet of flavors and aromas! Crisp acidity. Nice long finish. Really nice stuff!

2010 Vins d’Orrance Cuvée Ameena Syrah

This South African Syrah, named after the producer’s daughter, is a real crowd-pleaser. Black fruit - blackberries, black plums, black cherries, cassis - fruit leather, and a touch of macerated fruit on the nose with black pepper dusting and Assam tea. Ripe black fruit on the palate with nutmeg, clove, Asian spices, tea box, fruit leather, and smoked meats. Really nice acidity that defines the blackberries and gives them ripeness. You aren’t going to find a much better Syrah at around $22, especially if you can find this at this price!

2005 Château Valrose Cuvée Alienor

This is a sturdy wine, folks. Peppered blackberries, cassis, and dark florals. Eucalyptus, thyme, rosemary, young tobacco, black tea, and Asian spices. More blackberries and cassis on the palate with cocoa and high green notes.
