asian dreads

anonymous asked:

I was one of those ppl who were constantly checking & looking out for ~appropriation~ every day over the smallest little thing & I'd be like OMG HE/SHE IS SO CANCELLED. it became exhausting, draining & it actually made me into a miserable person because I was so damn negative all the time. I've stopped being like that though. Grills/clothing/a dance routine is he least of MY worries🙄 (yes. I saw someone have a fit over a dance. I can't.) If this gets hate then idc. Stay miserable lol 🤷‍♀️

I’m glad you stopped what made you miserable because that’s not healthy to be negative all the time, there’s real racist appropriation out there, sorry (not sorry) but a Korean/ Asian wearing braids or dreads is the least of my worries, I don’t even think about it.

A/N: I decided to write this because I saw an Instagram post where a Malaysian “Exo-L” was making rude comments about Kai’s skin (they were comparing it to dirt).

You unlocked your phone when it dinged and smiled when you saw it was a text from your boyfriend, Jongin, asking you to come over. You didn’t know why he wanted you over, but it made you happy. Maybe he had a special surprise waiting for you? Maybe he wanted to go out for lunch? Or maybe he just wanted to watch TV together and enjoy each other’s company? Either way, you would’ve been ecstatic.

If your tired of hearing the word ‘cultural appropriation’ everywhere, maybe your favs should stop appropriating. It’s just that simple. All of a sudden SOME EXO-Ls are acting like this is okay because it’s fucking EXO. It’s not, and I can’t believe I have to explain why.

Firstly, nobody is playing the victim card here. Nobody is being oversensitive. You can try and downplay stuff like blackface and dreads by saying: ‘i’m white and i’m privileged and i don’t get mad when asians wear western clothes!1!’ but you are missing the point. I don’t think it’s right for people to throw death threats are Kai, but some white fans have made it a 100% clear they don’t give a shit about anybody but themselves.

You guys are reducing decades of discrimination and humiliation to 'asians wearing dreads boohoohoo’. The problem with dreads is because they’re seen as a fashion statement to look aggressive and 'edgy’/'cool’. It’s directly associated with the perception of  black people as aggressive and violent. By wearing dreads to look edgy, you are straight-out perpetuating that stereotype. A non-black person wearing dreads will be seen as cool and woke, but a black person will be seen as “ghetto” and will be asked 'why their hair is so dirty’. This is something real life I’ve seen black people with dreads experience. Way to promote white privileged and call it 'cultural appreciation’.

You can post pictures of older civilizations like Egyptians wearing dreadlocks and say 'well Egyptians wore dreads’, but they weren’t wearing it to look 'cool’ and 'edgy’. And I think it’s weird how Kai- who is 'coincidentally’ the darkest member of EXO gets painted as 'exotic’ the most. This isn’t Kai’s fault and this isn’t make him a at all, but all you guys rationalizing everything aren’t helping.

You people can whine about 'we’re so oppressed!1! we can’t wear dreads’, but maybe you should sit your privileged ass down. People can complain about 'woke stans/sensitive people’ all they like, but you cannot marginalize a group and expect not to be called out on your bullshit. Peace out <3
