asian and i know it

anonymous asked:

Ahh thank you haha. Well racially I am half black and half white, but I was born and raised in Korea after I was adopted by a Korean couple when I was like a week old or something. Korean is my first language, my brothers are Korean etc. Anyway, my issue is that recently I have taken an interest in the black lives matter movement, and was told by someone that I wasn't "actually black" because I was raised in Korea. But then I was also told that I am not "actually Korean" because +

Because I am not East Asian in race. And I don’t know I am very new to looking at race and things and I guess I just feel very out of place and wanted to know your thoughts sorry I know it is not your problem (2/2)

ok this is definitely a very tricky situation and i want you to know it’s totally ok that it might take awhile for you to figure things out or wrap your head around everything and also don’t feel bad about coming to me about this! i think it’s hard when you are one race and live in another country that’s primarily another race, but i’ll try to explain my thoughts as best i can and hopefully it helps (i also just wanna say first and foremost, my word is not law, so like everything i am saying is what i think, not the truth, but i’m trying to make some educated stances)

anyways!

racially, you are not korean, you already know that of course, but that’s the first part tackled. but racially, you are black (mixed, of course, but you being mixed does not negate those races you are). of course you are black (or mixed, which i think is an important thing to consider yourself, since i, for example, am mixed race too)

you may not be korean in race, but like….you are korean in the same way that i am american. and again, this is where it gets tricky, because america is much less central in a race (although lots of people would beg to differ, that’s a discussion for a different thread lol). but basically, it’s the culture you were raised in, it’s the culture you know and belong in. but like…i think this is where it’s harder to identify to others “what you are” because some people might argue against things. so like…you aren’t korean but in a sense you are. it’s the same problem lots of immigrants face, because they might not be sure where exactly they belong.

but the thing is, me being american does not erase my mixed heritage. i can tell people i am american, but i am still mexican, spanish, and portuguese. but i was born and raised in america. so i’m american. but people seem to care more about your culture and race than the actual place you live in. so it’s tricky. for example, if your passport says you are a citizen of korea, you are korean, but that does not make you racially so (and that’s where people will tell you that you are not “actually korean”)

try to think of it this way, people of all different races live in one country. i go to school in the uk. i have a friend whose family is from hong kong, but she was raised in britain. she is british, although she is also chinese. the definition for being british is not “white citizen” because it is about where you were raised and potentially a citizen of.

i think, if people question you if you were to call yourself korean, you could explain your situation. you are not trying to claim your race as korean but where you live and where you belong.

and now i want to circle back to the not “actually black” comment because it’s just absolutely ridiculous. where you were raised does not ever, ever ever ever, change your race. you being mixed will not change because you were raised in korea. that will not change your interest in the black lives matter movement, it will not change your mindset on connecting with others of the same race. your race is who you are, but your citizenship is where you live. that can always change, but your race doesn’t change with that. and it’s just….crazy to think that to be involved in black lives matter you have to be black. it’s one thing to claim to be black if you are not, but that’s not your case.

as someone who is new to looking at race, i think it’s important for you to remember that sometimes people need to be explained the situation because a lot of people don’t have to think about these things. be proud of who you are and embrace all the parts that make you who you are. don’t let other people tell you what you are or aren’t if they don’t know your situation.

if anyone else has other thoughts, or wants to add anything, feel free to! i’m always here to help you out, and if you think anything i’ve said is completely out of line let me know because, like i said, i don’t know everything and i don’t want to spread wrong information! but i hope this made sense and i wish you the best of luck <3

A compilation of stuff I know about drawing Asian faces and Asian culture! I feel like many “How-To-Draw” tutorials often default to European faces and are not really helpful when drawing people of other races. So I thought I’d put this together in case anyone is interested! Feel free to share this guide and shoot me questions if you have any! I’m by no means an expert, I just know a few things from drawing experience and from my own cultural background.

reblog to petition for ross butler (zach dempsey—13 reasons why/reggie mantle—riverdale) to be casted as captain li shang in disney’s live action remake of mulan —–———————————————————— UPDATE: PLEASE READ BEFORE MAKING ANY STATEMENTS i originally made this post to share my opinion that i thought that ross butler would be able to play the part of shang. i did not know that mulan was going to ditch the character (which actually makes me really sad wtf he was one of my favorite characters and honestly petition for mulan to have singing beauty and the beast was great and reflections and the i’ll make a man out of you song are iconic) and that’s unfortunate, but that means he can’t even play the part anyway, because it doesn’t exist. but just the concept of butler playing shang has really gotten to some people. look. i know he’s not chinese. but actors are actors, and their job is literally to portray people, 99% of the time the characters they portray are of different races. i didn’t say butler would be perfect for the part because he looks chinese. that would be racist, and i would understand all the hate on this post. but this post never said anything of that matter. your opinion that an actor who is chinese should play the role of a chinese character is valid. but so is my opinion that butler would be able to splendidly fulfill the role as can be judged from his performances in all of these shows and so on. just. can we NOT make this into an issue and just have fun entertaining the idea? i literally don’t mean to offend anyone, it’s just weird to see all these people hating on my innocent idea. i’m not saying that because he’s asian butler is “close enough” and will “settle for the role” just because he’s popular or attractive or whatever. as a person of fellow asian decent, I KNOW NOT ALL ASIANS ARE THE SAME. and yes, I AM ANNOYED WHEN PEOPLE CONSIDER US ALL THE SAME. but that has absolutely NOTHING to do with this post my friends. just. yeah. there. —–————————————————————

Some Cinder in her coronation dress cause I’ve never tried drawing her, and it was so fun honestly!

I’m also addicted to saturated colors so let’s all have in count that the dress is actually silver and it looks purple cause I like messing around lol.

how can people cry “FETISHIZATION!!!!” immediately at the fetishization of non-Asian POC but are completely fine with sexualizing k-pop stars all they want, have entire blogs dedicated to shipping them in real life, borderline stalk them into their personal lives, and treat them as if they were gods just because they’re asian as if that doesn’t count as fetishization, too?

do you not think Asians count as a race that can be fetishized? or is it because “i’M POC TOO!!!!!!!!” as if your experience with oppression means that you can contribute to the oppression of another group? that you’d target another race with the same thing you despise people doing to yourself? or is it because you’ve called yourself a weeaboo/koreaboo so much that it’s lost the original meaning behind the word where it was meant to be a label on people who fetishize asians? that you’ve been contributing to the fetishization of Asians for so long you don’t realize that what you’re doing is fetishization?

just admit you don’t care about the fetishization of Asian people if you pull this sort of thing, at least you can say that you’re honest about it and let people know they should avoid you.

As @yuunabai-whisper2 and I determined, when it comes to cowboys like McCree and Erron Black, archers like Hanzo and Kung Jin are indeed straight as arrows … as in very helluva bent arrows.

I personally think it would have been a really interesting dynamic to see this Asian-American guy who’s not in touch with his Asian roots go and get in touch with them and discover this power. I think that’s super interesting and we’ve never seen that. We’ve seen this narrative already; we’ve seen it many times. So I thought it would be cool and that it would add some more color to The Defenders. And obviously I can do my own fight sequences, so those would be more dynamic. I think it would be really interesting to have that feeling of an outsider. There’s no more of an outsider than an Asian-American: We feel like outsiders in Asia and we feel like outsiders at home. That’s been really difficult — especially for me. It’s been hard for me, because in the casting world, it’s very specific. So when they see me and I’m six-two, I’m a 180 pounds, I’m a muscular half-Asian dude. They’re like, “Well, I don’t know what to do with this guy.” They’re like, “He’s not Asian, he’s not white … no.” That’s what I’ve been dealing with my whole life. So I understand those frustrations of being an outsider. Like Danny’s character. I understand him very well. — Lewis Tan
