“But the Murderer came and the Sun never rose”

Benjamin and Alice Cass were bludgeoned to death by John Diggle. They were discovered in a pool of blood, clutching each other, by Benjamin’s brother.

John Diggle stole only some spectacles and clothing. The latter was his downfall as when he tried to sell them the next day in Liverpool, someone recognised them (really?!) 

He was tried, found guilty and hanged in the aptly named “Hanging Corner” of Lancaster Castle on 20th March 1826.
