Zack Stentz (and his co-author, Ashley Edward Miller, coming Thursday!) make for a pretty exciting writing duo. After working together on screenplays for the exciting world of Hollywood glam (anyone here see X-Men: First Class?), we were so excited to welcome them as new Penguin Teen authors! Colin Fischer is an extraordinary start to a new series about a boy solving mysteries, even though he has severe Aspergers Syndrome - and he’s often aided by it! We can’t wait for everyone to dive into this new series, but until you can stop by the bookstore to pick up your copy, let’s find out more about this Hollywood screenwriter/Penguin author!
Name: Zack Stentz
Novel: Colin Fischer
Available: Nov. 1, 201
Who’s your favorite author, living or dead? My favorite author (if you can call him that) is still Homer. The Iliad and the Odyssey are what I find myself coming back to again and again when I want to immerse myself in language and storytelling.
What’s your favorite thing about your book? My favorite thing about Colin Fischer is the way it takes some pretty familiar tropes—the popular kid, the outcast, the bully, the hard-assed gym teacher‑and turns them on their head in what I hope are some clever and unexpected ways.
If you could spend one year on a deserted island with one character from literature, who would you choose? For sheer practicality I’d pick Robinson Crusoe. He’d teach me survival skills and keep us pretty comfortable for the duration.
Where do you write? I typically write in a little room right off of our kitchen, except when the kids are really loud and I find myself having to flee upstairs or borrow someone else’s office.
Do you tweet? What’s the funniest thing you’ve ever tweeted? I am on Twitter at @musezack (a bad pun on my name and elevator music that dates back to high school. I made a reasonably witty tweet the other day comparing voting lines in Florida to the scene outside Hall H at San Diego Comic Con.
What is your favorite season? I’ll have to go with Spring, if only because I so love the steady lengthening of the days.
If you could teleport anywhere in the known universe right now, where would you go? I’d want to check out one of those recently discovered exoplanets to see if it really could support life. Better hope I’m either right or wearing a spacesuit, though, or it would be a short trip!
Do you have any writing rituals? Not really. When you have kids and a busy life, writing is such a catch as catch can business that fussy little author rituals are an indulgence you can’t really afford.
What is your idea of earthly happiness? I’m living it. No, seriously. I am.
What is the best concert you’ve ever been to? The Sisters of Mercy at the Warfield Theater, 1991. Epic show. Bet you didn’t know a goth cover of a Dolly Parton song could sound so good.
What are you currently working on? Ash and I are working on a couple of different screenplays, including a new adaptation of Robert Heinlein’s classic Starship Troopers, plus the sequel to Colin Fischer.
Thanks, Zack! We can’t wait for the sequel!
You can find Zack on Twitter.
Check back on Thursday for Ashley Edward Miller, the co-author of Colin Fischer!
