<< [Chapter 2/?] >>

It’s not until the morning when he’s looking over the pictures again when he notices the same figure in the water that he saw the night before.

The diner in town opens at five.

Geno gets there at 5:30 and rolls his eyes at how chipper the waiter sounds when he tells him to “take a seat wherever you like, I’ll be right with ya.”

His name tag says Jake and he doesn’t bat an eye at his sullen look when he pour his coffee and puts down the menu.

He’s young, fresh out of high school, maybe, and he doesn’t look like he knows who Geno is at all.

Geno’s already made up his mind to tip him very well.

“You’re the one that moved into that shack down by the beach, aren’t you?”

He coughs as the coffee goes down the wrong way. It burns his tongue.

“How you know?”

“This is a tiny, little island. Everyone knows everything. Is it haunted?”

“I’m Geno and it’s not haunted,” he grumbles. “Not a shack.”

“The walls are falling in on themselves and it looks haunted.”

Pesaj, Istanbul style

Spring and its glorious produce. Here is the Passover table, Sephardic style, of the gracious family that invited me to join them on the first night of Pesah.

And the line-up is:

1) Almodrote de berendjena (Eggplant tart)

2) Almodrote de espinaca (spinach tart)

3) artichokes

4) asparagus

5) green beans

6)  Huevos haminados

7)  köftes de prasa (leek patties)

8)  rulikos de berendjena (eggplant rolls)

And finally, in case the cook is stressed out from having to prepare all this food for a crowd of hungry people, a plateful of worry beads (please do not eat, even if they do look like cherry tomatoes).

Thank you!

Essa Jorgan

New OC time! Meet Essa, one of Nya and Aric’s twin daughters and with those genes it’s no surprise that she’s a looker. Stubborn and rebellious, she spent a lot of her childhood idolizing her ‘Aunt’ Shawnni, @shimmer-like-agirl‘s Smuggler. Essa would always be drawn into adventures with Shawnni and Corso’s oldest daughter Lani, while their son Jaycen stayed close by in case they got into trouble.

Essa inherited her mother’s Force ability of Animal Bonding, getting along well with her family’s nexu pack. She’s usually seen with her best buddies, her akk dog Artie(short for Artichoke, named for his green scales) and her nexu runt Thistle.

Thistle is notorious for bossing Artie around, but the big lug is protective of the sassy nexu and their mistress, jumping in to fight for them…

And standing guard when Essa needs him to…

Roasted Artichokes & Beets over Pink Rice with Red Lentil & Beet Greens Soup

We harvested these beautiful beets yesterday. Pulling beets from the garden is so much fun. I used them to make Lentil and Beet Green Soup, and Roasted Beets, Sweet Onions & Artichoke Hearts over Pink Rice. I served them with the rest of our pickled green beans from last week, which were extra delicious after sitting in the garlicky vinegar for a week. Yum! This was so fresh and delicious right out of the garden.

Northern gardeners can start planting beets as soon as the ground thaws, they grow well in cold temperatures. Mine are planted in a raised garden bed, in a very sunny spot, in loose, loamy soil that has lots of compost added. We started them from seed back in January. The gold ones are growing faster than the red ones, they’re larger than the red ones at this point, but I think the red ones will catch up.

Beets are versatile and the greens are delicious too. Here’s how we made this delicious & healthy lunch.

Cook Rice. I like to cook rice like pasta, in lots of boiling salted water until it still has a little bit of a bite, and then drain through a mesh strainer and cover to steam while I cook everything else.

For the roasted beets: Heat oven to 375. Wash and peel the top of the beets, cut them in half & add to a roasting pan with chopped sweet onions, a drizzle of olive oil, salt and pepper. Cover with foil and roast for about 40 minutes or more until cooked through. Add 1 can drained artichoke hearts at the end and return to oven for another 15 minutes until hot. Serve over rice with lemon wedges.

For the soup, sauté 1 chopped onion, 2 chopped celery stalks, 1chopped carrot and 3 minced garlic cloves in olive oil until fragrant. Add rinsed lentils, (I used small red lentils), 3 - 4 cups veggie or chicken stock, 2 tablespoons tomato paste, 1 tblsp chopped fresh parsley, celery salt and fresh ground pepper, 2 tsp sumac, ½ tsp coriander powder, 1 bay leaf & a pinch of cumin. Bring up to heat then simmer on med low. Rinse and chop beet greens and add those to the soup. Garnish with a sprinkle of sumac and a little turmeric.
