Science on the SPOT: The Glowing Millipedes of Alcatraz

More than a million visitors visit Alcatraz every year, but a recent discovery has revealed another attraction that lives within the shadows of this historic prison. Check out KQED Science’s newest online video about these fascinating arthropods!

Cambrian Period Arthropod. “Anomalocaris (‘abnormal shrimp’) is an extinct genus of anomalocaridid. Anomalocaris had a large head, a single pair of large compound eyes, and an unusual, disk-like mouth. The mouth could constrict to crush prey and the tooth-like prongs continued down the walls of the gullet.Two large 'arms’ (up to seven inches in length when extended) with barb-like spikes were positioned in front of the mouth.”
