WOMXN CRUSH WEDNESDAY: Our #rolemodel, a #MujerdeMaiz, a #ARTivist- Kimberly Bautista! Medium: Film/Video Kimberly Bautista is a Colombian-Irish-American award-winning documentary filmmaker and activist who works transnationally to prevent gender-based violence using the arts. She has spoken at the United Nations Office in Geneva, Switzerland and the United Nations Headquarters in New York as an expert on the topic on violence against women and girls in Latin America. She directed the PBS documentary film “Justice for My Sister,” about one Guatemalan woman’s determination to hold her sister’s killer accountable. The documentary is the centerpiece for a transnational campaign in over 20 countries to prevent gender-based violence, along with its complimentary webseries, texting campaign toolkit, 30-hour trainer’s training curriculum, and activity booklet. She founded the Justice for My Sister Collective, which uses an arts-based approach to prevent violence against women and gender nonconforming individuals, and is now a project of the prolific and renowned Los Angeles-based nonprofit Community Partners.
In Fall 2014, she launched a highly anticipated social media campaign for the 16 Days of Activism to End GenderBased Violence with actress Kate del Castillo. She produced and oversaw the production and delivery of 15 short documentaries about stories of survival from eight countries, in collaboration with local filmmakers.
Kimberly is part of the Artist’s Network with United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s UNiTE to End Violence against Women.
