Here is 10 things I tell my students on the first day of class about building yourself up into being a artist. This is starting point, not a all encompassing list. Hope you find it helpful!

1. Never stop experimenting. When you stop trying new things your style will get stagnant. Developing your style never has an stopping point, you’re going to continue learning and changing–that is a good thing.

2. Don’t draw to please a particular person or audience. It is tempting to draw something you think the person viewing it will like. It starts with drawing to please a friend/family member, then a teacher, and then a wider audience online or in person. However, consider drawing to please yourself first, an audience will follow in time and you will face a lot less burn out down the line. You’ll be hired for this, work you made out of something you liked crafting–not something you forced yourself to craft. Don’t make art that makes you miserable.

3. Learn the basics. Get good at anatomy (human and animal), perspective, creating depth, lighting, etc–then break the rules you’ve learned. Work, no matter how abstract, pushed, and pulled is always stronger when informed by a mastery of the basics.

4. Practice working in ways that do not hurt your hand. Learn to draw with a relaxed hand and draw in long strokes. Both of these methods help prevent issues with your hand, wrist, and arm. I’ve never gotten carpal tunnel, and I draw on a daily basis, because I have learned how to treat my hand well. Your hand is your tool, if you wear it out there isn’t a new one you can just pick up. The best treatment for any possible physical issues is prevention.

5. Learn how to draw without erasing. It is scary and it is tough no doubt! However the best way to become more confident is through not erasing. There is a medium for everyone to try this out, whether it is pen or non-erasing colored pencils. If you want to ease yourself into this method try out Pentel red lead, it erases a bit–but overall will always leave a mark with every stroke you make. The importance of this is learning to not be afraid of mistakes.

6. Draw from life, from reference photos, and from imagination. This trio is important, combining all three is usually how you build great drawing skills. Drawing from life gives you the ability to capture small details that you’ll remember to put in when drawing from a reference photo, drawing from refs will give you the practice you’ll need to handle whatever subject so that one day you can draw it from your own imagination–see how that works?

7. You’re art isn’t completely unique and that is okay. I can’t emphasis how many people I know who have gotten so hung up on being something totally unique that they burn out fast and never make work again. Now, considering how much art is in the world there is no way that what you create will be 100% unique to you. That is fine, your personality in your work is more of what makes something yours than a “style”.

8. Figure out your work’s personality. On that note finding the personality of your art is important as you go into trying to build your own place in the art world. The personality of a piece is a combination of style, subject, color, shapes, lines, and maybe most important themes (yes subject and themes are different). This combo is what makes your art special. At a loss for where to start figuring out your own personality? Compile a list of 10 artists you love. Why do you love them? Is it the shapes of one artist that speak to you, the line work of another is beautiful, the themes of a third make you feel inspired? Now take the 10 things you love about those 10 artists and start applying them to your own work. This isn’t about copying these artists, it is about the inspiration. That line work you love in another artist’s piece is gunna look different in yours for example. Those themes from another artist, well when you take them on your life might inform them in a opposite way. In time your inspired work will evolve into something that is your own.

9. Talent is nice, persistence is more important. Someone may be naturally talented in some areas of art, however someone who is persistent in their craft is so much more likely to succeed. Effort, continued growth, and practice will add up to so much more in the long run than just skating by on “talent”.

10. Be a good person. Treat others with respect, learn about social issues, don’t be a creep, and use your art to help people. And this might mean you craft a piece about an important issue that changes thousands of lives, or you might just be creating to help yourself get through the day. Both are important, after all you are a person too and you should always be trying to help and be kind to yourself.

super duper lazy and short animatic that i may or may not clean up

Da, da, da, daaaaaaaa…… that’s a little more dramatic than I had intended. I love all these wonderful Sai tutorials that get posted on here but I haven’t seen much attention payed to Sai’s Lineart tool which I can’t get enough of. I’m sure there probably are Lineart Layer tutorials out there - I just haven’t come across one so I’m just adding to the pile. The Lineart tool is so awesome it deserves any number of tutorials anyway. It’s so easy to use, it saves me so much time, and it offers so much control which I really love. Honestly, the tool is so easy to use that this is less of a tutorial and more of just a general encouragement to just whip it out and start playing with it. Yeah. So say we start with a simple line like this swirly-wirly thingy that I drew with the marker tool. Well, the first step would be to create a linework layer by clicking the linework layer button.

There we go. Now, a lineart layer in Sai is different from any other regular layer in Sai and it will bring up a completely new range of tools. I’m gonna briefly go through them but the best way to understand exactly what each does is to just try them out for yourself. There’s no substitute for experience or however the saying goes.

  • Pen - This is your freehand lineart tool and to best honest I don’t really use it that often. That’s just me personally. I have an expensive gaming rig that has all sorts of magic running under the hood but we all know that Sai’s memory management is pretty crappy and I don’t need the lag or crashes that come with this tool when working at a high DPI. You may have a different, entirely pleasant experience with this particular tool but for me, if I’m doing freehand inking, I’d much rather just use the regular Pencil tool.
  • Eraser - Kinda speaks for itself.
  • Weight - This one I do love. Say you’ve drawn a line - or a path as Sai calls it. With this tool you can adjust the thickness of the particular line by simply selecting the brush size and then clicking on the line.
  • Color - Same as Weight. Simply select your desired colour and then select the desired line you’d like to change. Very useful. For the aesthetic.
  • Edit - This one comes with its own subset of mini-tools that I’ll get into in a moment. But this is definitely a useful tool - for me it’s probably the most useful.
  • Pressure - This is the one that adds the character to your linework. I’ll explain further below.
  • SelPen - A selection tool. Pretty standard. Since the Lineart layer works in ‘Anchor’ points (which again, I’ll get in to further down below) I don’t really use this one.
  • SelErs - Selection Erase. Goes hand in hand with the SelPen. I can’t say that I personally use this one  much.
  • Curve & Line - The Curve and the Line tools are the cornerstones of the Linework layer. I’m explain both further down.

The Edit tool, as I mentioned, brings up its own list of sub-tools. And they definitely have their uses. Again, it’s best to play around with them to truly get a grasp of what they do but I’ll just run through them quickly before I get on with the main tutorial.

  • Select - For selecting anchor points of paths. Honestly, I don’t really use this one too much simply because hovering over a point or path and clicking will select it.
  • Move/Add - Now this one I use a lot. Moving an anchor will affect the curvature of your line if you’ve used the ‘Curve’ tool, or you can add curves to a straight line by clicking and dragging in between anchor points.
  • Delete CP/Curve - Kinda speaks for itself. It will delete an achor point in your line. Sometimes this can be useful for making your curves rounder if you’ve added too many points to it.
  • Deform Path - Again, kinda self explanatory. It will warp your line. I don’t really use this one myself but that’s not to say that it couldn’t have its uses.
  • Deform Anchor - See above.
  • Move Path - Instead of moving just an anchor or adjusting the curvature of your line you can move the entire line at once. Can be useful.
  • Duplicate Path - Does exactly what it says - creates a copy of your line. Haven’t found much use for this simply because I don’t particularly like copy/paste stuff in linework. Faults or differences add character.
  • Delete Path - deletes a line you’ve drawn independently of other lines on your linework layer. Can be useful as well.
  • Connect CPs - This is difficult to explain the benefits of. It’s one that should be experimented with. It basically joins lines together. I use it quite often. Just pick this option and drag from one anchor point to another to join them.
  • Pointed/Rounded - See the diagram below for this one. I find it very useful.

As you can see I used the Curve tool to draw a simple curve (left) and then I used the Pointed/Rounded tool to convert the curve into a point (right) by selecting the tool and then clicking on the anchor point at the height of the curve. I find it very useful. Anyway, back to our swirly-wirly thingy.

Because our swirly-wirly thingy is basically one long curve, I simply select the curve tool and start clicking. Starting at the centre point on one end, I click to add anchor points as I trace the shape of the object. Each point adjusts the curvature from the last point. It’s kinda hard to explain verbally or even visually but try it out and you’ll quickly see how it works.

Once I have a line over whatever I’m inking done I like to adjust the weight to suit my preferences. I like to work with thicker lines because they give more room to play around with weight. So to adjust the weight you click on the Weight tool, select a brush size and then click on your line. If only it were that simple in life.

Once I have a good weight selected I move on to the Pressure tool. The pressure tool gives you two options. Pressure for width and pressure for density. Width is like controlling the weight of the line at individual points and density controls the transparency. I don’t usually use the density option. As with traditional inking I prefer to denote depth, shadow, etc. with weight as you can see in the image above. To adjust the pressure, simply select the pressure tool and then select an anchor point. Click, hold and drag to the left to make the line thinner of more transparent and to the right to make the line thicker and more dense. As you drag, a percentage will appear over the anchor point you’ve selected. This can be useful for keeping things consistent.

That’s all well and good for curved lines but what about straight lines? That’s where the line tool comes in. It works exactly the same way except it won’t add a curvature to your anchor pints. Still very useful though. Especially when combined with the Weight and Pressure tools.

Here’s an example of one my drawings. It’s Dark Empress Kitana from Mortal Kombat. The one in red is the pencils which if converted to black would probably make a pretty good linework layer. I’m a firm believer in taking the time to clean up your sketch/pencils layer because it will dictate your entire drawing. The one below in black was done using Sai’s linework layer feature. Although not entirely.

As much as I love Sai’s linework layer, it can look a little too clean which is not great when you’re drawing people. Although, it’s all art so it’s all up to personal preferences and personal style. There’s no wrong way to do it. For me though, I prefer to do skin, facial features, hair, etc. by hand using Sai’s Pencil tool on a normal layer and reserve the Linework Layer for architecture, clothing or any non-organic substances. I inked Kitana’s eyes and eyebrows freehand ( or as freehand as you can be with Sai’s amazing stabilisers) but everything else such as her armour or her fan weapon thingy was done using the Curve and Line tools on the Linework Layer.

I hope this tutorial has been useful. Or if not useful - then at least encouring to try out Sai’s linework layer. It’s such a robust feature that I don’t see get much attention and I can’t even begin to describe how much time it saves me or how much I adore it. If you have any questions (because I’m well aware how unsuited I am to writing tutorials - this is so damn rambly - sorry!) then feel free to drop me an ask here at keithbyrneart.

P.S, sorry about my handwriting in the stills. It’s gotten a lot messier these days.

19082017 • Studio Art Notes • 🎧 : My Page - NCT Dream 》

I decided to write my notes differently this time round. And all I can say is that I think I found my new favourite way of taking notes. It was so much fun writing up my notes? And I didn’t have a worry in the world while I was writing this, unlike when I write on lined sheets? You’ll definitely see more notes like these in the future.

The First House - A.K.A Your Rising Sign/Ascendant

This is the first part of a twelve part series briefly explaining how the signs work in each house. Enjoy!

Aries Rising: A leader, you are very headstrong and bold. Because of this you come off as selfish and arrogant to those around you. You have a natural birth chart because it is said that you have earned it in your past life, meaning that you are quite lucky than most signs. Your best qualities are being courageous, having a need to succeed, and having lots of energy.

Taurus Rising: You are very concerned with keeping everything together so stability is important to you. You aim for having a secure home so you will do what it takes in order to achieve it. By others, you are seen as a person who is patient, takes their time, and stubborn in their ways.

Gemini Rising: Dual personalities partake in the Gemini ascendant as well. There are those Gemini risings who are either bubbly and talkative, or there are those that are witty and clever. You are very curious, and want to learn about everything and everyone. You thrive in chaos, and are able to focus on more than one thing at a time, even if it looks like you are not paying attention at all. Best quality? Social butterflies.

Cancer Rising: This sign is a very thoughtful and caring one. People tend to pour their problems and feelings on you because you are able to understand their feelings more so than others. It is easy for them to take advantage of you so learn when to stop being everyone’s therapist. Like a crab, you only come out of your shell when you see fit, but when you do you can become pretty social.

Leo Rising: Off the bat you attract attention whether it be from your charisma or looks. You would make a great spokesperson since you are very grand in your gestures and are demonstrative. You have a sunny vibe to yourself and are courageous and full of pride. Usually creative, you may be talented in the arts. You guys are natural romantics and love to dream, so much so, that you ensure in achieving those dreams.

Virgo Rising: Like Cancer risings, you are reserved and take your time opening up to new people and places. Because of this, people believe you to be critical and detached. You are very intelligent. You care about your body, so you can be picky in what you eat, and you enjoy exercise. You stress out a lot because you aim for perfection, but remember, nothing and no one is perfect, so it’s okay to be easy on yourself.

Libra Rising: This is the Ascendant of beauty since it is ruled by Venus itself. You have a natural soothing charm that easily attracts people to you. You enjoy being in a relationship for the sake of not being alone, learn to be independent so you are not taken advantage of, conflict can be good. Looking presentable and fashionable is important to you.

Scorpio Rising: The aura of the Scorpio Ascendant is strong and let’s others know that you are there. You are either loved or hated. Your privacy is important to you. You are very strong and can overcome mental/physical problems more than others. An ambitious sign, you can be competitive and want to be very successful in what you are trying to achieve.

Sagittarius Rising: You are very enthusiastic, adventurous, and have a strong desire to explore. You have a need for freedom and independence when it comes to your overall aspect in life. You do not like routine. Spiritualistic and philosophic ways of life are more interesting to you. You have a natural charisma that makes you appear larger than life.

Capricorn Rising: You take everything seriously, and very competent. The way you are and appear to be is important to you because you believe you look successful, you will be successful. However, you have strong feelings of doubt and are good at hiding them. Very mature for your age, you are smart in your decisions whether it be in wealth or your career.

Aquarius Rising: Off the bat you are a unique individual and everyone seems to know it. Since you are a very idealistic and humanitarian, you have a keen for being educated in many subjects, so people may come to you for advice. You get a kick out of shocking people because it’s simply just entertaining for you, for example, being the devil’s advocate. You can be stuck in the past or future, so don’t forget to pay attention to the present.

Pisces Rising: Very “go with the flow” type people you move through life like a fish swimming through a gentle wave. You are irresistibly charming because you are dreamy and soft-hearted. Making decisions is hard for you. One day you can be shy and the next day you can be an outgoing person. You are sensitive, compassionate, and vulnerable.

Another Voltron au, oh and look, its Klance, what a surprise.

Okay, Voltron band au. Here we go.

-Allura, Keith, and Shiro are in a really famous band. (With Coran as the manager obvi.)

-Allura sings and plays bass, Shiro is on drums and Keith is on guitar.

-Lance, Pidge and Hunk are all university students, Pidge is working for and engineering degree, Hunk is doing business (cos his family owns a large chain of 5 star restaurants that he will one day take over.) And Lance is doing a masters in (being fabulous) arts.

-Matt works part time in a music store. (Part time DJ) Pidge, Hunk and Lance can often be found congregating there.

-Pidge, Hunk and Matt are all really into this band called Voltron (Allura, Keith, Shiro.) Lance not so much, he’s more of a Beyonce kind of guy. (I mean who isn’t?)

-At this time Allura is one of the queens of Hollywood, (up there with Meryl Streep, Ellen and Beyonce.) So she’s running away from the paparrazi.

-she goes into this little music store to hide, but Lance is the only one in there (Matt had to grab something from the back or sommething.) He looks at her and immediately recognises her.

-its kind of awkward, he introduces himself (does a little bad flirting, but only as a joke cos he’s not really about that. Not Allura, but her lifestyle.) But he gets her autograph for Pidge, Hunk and Matt, then helps her escape by letting her go from the side door.

-Pidge, Hunk and Matt are kind of furious. (Pidge and Matt more so than Hunk.) Not at Lance, but because the five minutes they were gone freaking ALLURA showed up to their store.

-Allura comes back again, to thank Lance for his help (more disguised this time) but this time she comes with Keith and Shiro. Pidge and Hunk are freaking out, Matt is slightly more dignified but still freaking out.

-Allura offers to take Lance out, he refuses, saying what ge did wasn’t even a big deal, she insists saying that it was a big deal to her.

-so Voltron takee Lance and his group of friends out to this really fancy restraurant, which Hunk just happens to OWN.

-Matt and Shiro hit it off right away. They are awesome friends. (Just friends in my au because Shiro and Allura are the IT couple of Hollywood, but you can interprut it anyway you like.)

-Allura talks to Hunk and Pidge, which leaves Keith and Lance to talk.

-they are both extremely awkward and don’t really know how to start a conversation. (Lance is usually really easy breezy about these things but oh boy, this is a superstar. A REALLY CUTE superstar. What do I say?)

-but it turns out they both went to the same high school for a bit, Keith was only there for a little while as he was between foster homes at the time. But it was enough to start the conversation.

-they begin laughing and joking and it just progresses from there.

-now Keith often sneaks into Lance’s college dorm to hang out, and sometimes he won’t even sneak. He’ll just pick him up with his motorbyke after a lecture and let everyone be in awe of him.

-Lance finds it extremely embarressing when Keith does this.

-slowburn, man, slowburn.

-Pidge, Hunk, Matt and Lance are invited to all of Voltron’s concerts with full access pass to everything.

-Keith took Lance to meet Beyonce as a surprise.

-It was hilarious, Keith filmed it all.

I have so much more but if you want it, DM me.

some reminders

- stay hydrated!
- think about flowers and how beautiful they are
- are you still bitter about that thing you should’ve stopped being mad about ages ago? try to let it go, you’ve probably already wasted way too much energy on it!
- don’t forget to eat, have some veggies or fruit!
- do you have any ideas for writing or art? if so, stop putting them off and make them happen! if you don’t, that’s fine too, don’t force it x
- take a moment to appreciate how far you’ve come this year and how much progress you’ve made
- send a friend a nice message to cheer them up and tell them you’re glad to have them in your life
- is there anyone you could write a letter to?
- stop wasting your time switching between apps for hours when there’s actually nothing to see - do something you WANT to do instead!
- have you been outside in the last couple of days? if not, force yourself to get some fresh air, it’ll do you good
- be kind. always.
