☭ 73 Years ago The Great Patriotic War ended

The ceaseless struggle and sacrifice of countless Soviet soldiers, partisans, and citizens struck down the fascist barbarians, halting the tide of German fascism and crushing it into its death. Despite suffering some grievous losses during the first year of the war, the alliance of workers and peasants and the leadership of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (Bolshevik) headed by Comrade Iosif Vissarionovich Stalin carried forward the revolutionary will and proletarian might of the Soviet masses, persevering against all odds and unfavourable conditions.

Just as the United States entered the war in December 1941, the Soviets had repealed the Fascists and their allies from the gates of Moscow, inflicting more than half a million casualties and tremendous losses of materiel, from tanks to motor vehicles, crippling the Wehrmacht and inflicting its first major defeat during the war.

Despite blunders some heavy blunders in the summer of 1942 the Red Army managed to stop the Wehrmacht once again in Stalingrad, as Hitler’s armies stretched themselves to their limits the Soviet Union once again proved its ability to mobilize its population and make up for the losses it sustained. Learning from its blunders the Red Army encircled and destroyed 5 Axis armies totalling more than 600.000 men.

After the victory in Stalingrad more than 4.5 million red army soldiers over a 1000-mile front pushed back the German invaders before being halted by German counter-offensives, as a product of these the Kursk salient was formed, and it was there that the fate of the fascists invaders would be sealed.

Just as 160.000 American and British soldiers invaded Sicily in 1943 and defeated 60.000 Germans, 2.5 million Red Army soldiers faced over 1 million Germans at the battle of Kursk. Marking the first time the Wehrmacht would be stopped before reaching any strategic depth, and also marking the prelude of a massive counter-offensive by the red army that would lead to the liberation of much of Ukraine and put the Red Army at the gates of Romania.

In June 1944 just as the western allies landed one million men in the coast of France and defeated half a million German Soldiers, the Red Army mobilizing 5.5 million men destroyed 3 German army groups, totaling more than 1.5 million men, inflicting nearly one million casualties to the Fascists in the span of two months. As the Red Army moved towards the liberation of Poland, Hungary and Bulgaria.

Thanks to the overwhelming victories in 1944 the Red Army pushed towards Berlin, signalling the end of the Third Reich, and the triumph of Marxism-Leninism over fascism. Although victory was achieved at a heavy toll, it is thanks to the sacrifice of countless Soviet citizens that Fascism was stopped in its tracks.
