A. Ryder: Interlude #4

Ellen Ryder was put in Cryo without her children ever knowing. Now, finally, there may be a chance at a Cure.

Jaal x Ryder, Mid/Post-Game, Established Relationship. Just a brief look at how Aria dealt with learning her mother was actually alive… and at a possible future.

Short but sweet, enjoy guys ♥ Also on AO3 under ‘The Misadventures of Aria Ryder’

“SAM, message Scott; tell him to meet me by the cryo pods, ASAP. And… and to find Elizabeth Reilly’s pod.”

“Affirmative, Pathfinder.”

She’s running and she doesn’t care, frantic, glad that she’d left Jaal behind, this once, if only because her panic would startle him.

Mom… Mom’s alive. She’s alive. She’s here!

Scott is waiting for her, staring in puzzlement at the pod she’s had him call down, a question in his gaze.

She can’t keep it in, can’t delay, words bursting from her mouth the moment she’s close enough.

Scott, it’s Mom. She’s alive. Dad had her put in Cryo - not cured, but alive!

And then they’re both stunned, both amazed, staring at the pod and wondering what to do.

“There is no known cure, currently,” SAM speaks up, “But Alec had hoped that here, in Andromeda, we might find a way to develop one. I will ensure work is put into this immediately.”

There’s nothing left to do, at that point, other than hope and wait. Scott gives her a hug and then heads back to the Medbay, not yet fully healed and exhausted from the excitement.

Aria heads immediately back to the main port of the Nexus, looking for one specific Angara; there’s news to share.

News on Ellen comes shortly after they discover that Aria is pregnant - the next day, in fact, before they’ve even had the chance to tell anyone else.

“Pathfinder,” SAM speaks up from her omnitool, “I have word from the Nexus Medical Labs.”

Aria blinks down at the orange glow, sharing a brief look of confusion with Jaal when he sits down beside her, “The Medical Labs? What about?”

“The Cure for your Mother.”

Aria chokes on her drink, coughing roughly while Jaal quickly takes the glass away and soothes his hand over her back.

What?” she croaks after a moment, heart racing.

“The Cure. They believe they have found a way to negate Ellen’s illness. They will begin the treatment immediately, once you’ve given your permission.”

“I give it. Tell them to start now.”

“Affirmative. I have relayed the message. Assuming treatment works as intended, we should be able to bring her out of cryo fairly soon.”

“How soon is ‘fairly soon’?”

“According to my calculations, she should be out of cryo within six months.”

Aria swallows, hands going automatically to her belly at the same time as Jaal’s arms wrap around her, his grin telling her they’re thinking the same thing.

“Mom… she’ll get to meet the baby.” she’s about to cry even though she’s smiling, overwhelmed, “Maybe… maybe, she’ll even be awake when they’re born.”

“I will keep you updated, Pathfinder.”

Jaal bends to nuzzle his forehead against hers, one hand slinking around to cover her own, “This is wonderful, Darling. My True Mother will be ecstatic; she would definitely like to meet her.”

Aria only nuzzles him back, smiling through the tears.

“I can’t wait.”

PLL Analysis: The “Liars Lament” Board Game

Wow, I haven’t made a post like this since my Rosewood Timeline, but here goes my attempt at analyzing the Liars Lament Board Game that was introduced in episode 7x11:

la-ment:

noun - a passionate expression of grief or sorrow.

verb - mourn (a person’s loss or death).

#1) The House of Hastings - Here, we see that the “START” section of the game in the upper left hand corner is located at none other than The Hastings’ home. With closer inspection we can see that all 5 Liars are standing right in front of the building where this entire story began on That fateful Night back in the summer of 2009; The Barn:

Blink, and you might miss one of the most important buildings from this entire story peaking out from the Hastings’ backyard, and it sure seems that this is where the Game is meant to begin.

You may also catch a glimpse of the mailbox (bottom right hand corner of GIF) which reads “DiLaurentis”, and we all know at this point that the DiLaurentis house is located on the other side of the Hastings’ property. It is only fitting that the board game would begin in this very location, where it all began.

It is also easy to notice that the Liars are all dressed in Season 1 attire, which must be paying homage to the notion that in the final 10 episodes, everything is going to come “full circle”, aka “back to the beginning”. (And can we just mention real quick that Alison seems to be the only Liar standing on a square):

Hmmm… interesting. Regardless if this is a clue or not, it was definitely meant to be shown that all of the Liars are dressed the same exact way they used to dress when the A Game began all those years ago.

#2) Radley - All roads lead back to Radley, right? It’s very interesting that the representation of Radley portrayed on the board game represents a literal Hell on Earth. Look at all of those trapped & lost souls!

We already know this is probably going to be an important part of the Game & I am really excited to see where it takes us.

#3) The Church - The place of so many Rosewood funerals (Alison, Wilden, CeCe, etc.), the place where we last saw Ian alive, the first time we were introduced to The Black Widow, and the very location of Charlotte’s murder; the Rosewood Chapel has been a staple of Pretty Little Liars since the very beginning.

This is also the “HOME” section, where the Liars get see their tasks displayed:

And it may be even more important than we thought… with the introduction of:

#4) The Secret Passage Way - Connects Radley to the church. Is this a clue towards Charlotte’s killer? And to throw it all the way back to Season 1, is this how Mona/Ian were able to escape the church so quickly after Alison threw him off of the bell tower? It would explain a lot in regards to how easy it’s been to sneak in & out of both Radley & the church, and now we have our answer.

There’s been a secret passageway the whole dang time! And I’m also inclined to believe that there is a passageway system under the entire town!

#5) The Lost Woods Resort - Now this is a majorly important part of the story. I wonder if there is some type of passageway underneath here as well, since Uber A was able to kidnap Hanna at the end of 6B.

#6) Mystery Location - Which I am willing to bet is the location of the Dollhouse. We already know that Charlotte’s dollhouse was located off of the same exact road as the Lost Woods Resort. We also see a very short clip in the 7B Promo showing Ali’s player piece (in the yellow shirt) at this very location.

And we all know that the yellow shirt was worn many times by many people, especially in the dollhouse (Ali, CeCe, Bethany, Mona & Sara). So seeing Ali’s game piece in this spot makes me think it may possibly be the dollhouse. (Even though I don’t understand why it wouldn’t just blatantly say that it was the dollhouse if it was actually meant to represent it. So I guess we’ll just stay tuned on this one…)

#7) Rosewood High - Where we spent the majority of our 7 years. Now with Ali, Emily & Paige all working there, I think we will be seeing a whole lot more of it to come.

^ Still taken from the 7B Promo

#8) The Hospital - Which automatically just makes me think of Wren.

This is the location of the very first “Dare” selected by Spencer in 7x11. We already know how many times we’ve had to visit Rosewood Hospital, and there have been many connections to this location in the past. Plan on seeing more!

#9) The Police Station/Jail - Wilden, Toby, Marco, Officer Barry. Shall I go on? The amount of corruption we have seen pass through Rosewood PD is something we are all very familiar with as well. I wonder what kind of fun challenges the Liars will have to face at this location.

#10) The Cemetery - So many bodies have been buried here.

#11) The Brew - Ezra Fitz’s loft, the first place the Liars met CeCe, and the place of hundreds of secret discussions. Is this an important part of the Game, or is it only there for show?

I wonder where this Game is taking us; on the ride of our lives I hope.

So there’s my quick analysis.

Let me know any input you may have, or any locations I might have missed :)

You could be the King but watch the Queen conquer.

Pretty Little Chess Game

There are many game analogies in Pretty Little Liars. The torture of the girls by A is known as the A Game. When Marlene talks about the show she refers to Endgame frequently. It is evident that A views his/her psychological torture of the liars as a game.

There have been many instances where A, as well as other characters, have referenced a game

When CeCe reveals herself as A (although I don’t think she was A, but was taking the fall for someone else) she says, “Game Over.

Have you ever noticed that a chess board is prominently displayed on the table in Ezra’s apartment?

Aria and Ezra play chess in 5x04 and a few episodes later Spencer gets a text from A that says “Check mate.”

We know A likes games, there were several in the Dollhouse playroom.

Chess pieces in order of strength/value:

  • 1 King
  • 1 Queen
  • 2 Rooks/Castles
  • 2 Bishops
  • 2 Knights
  • 8 Pawns

KING:

In chess, the king is the most important piece. The object of the game is to threaten the opponent’s king in such a way that escape is not possible (checkmate). If a player’s king is threatened with capture, it is in check and the player must remove the threat of capture on the next move. If this cannot be done, the king is said to be in checkmate, resulting in a loss for that player.

I don’t believe that Mona or CeCe was ever Uber A/A.D.  Their King was in check so they took the fall by taking the King out of check. How did they do that? Mona said she was A and was admitted to Radley and CeCe said she was A and was admitted to Welby.

In both of these instances, the cops stopped looking for A, because they thought there was no longer a threat. In order for the game to continue, they sacrificed themselves to protect the King.

So who is the King? = A.D / Uber A.

  • I believe this has been the same person throughout the entire show.
  • The two people I believe could be represented as the King are:
  • Wren Kingston
    • King is in his name
  • Ezra Fitz
    • The chess board is in is apartment
    • He was spying on the girls for YEARS (I have written in great lengths about why I think Ezra is A in other posts so I am not going into details here)
  • Charles wore a tuxedo in the Dollhouse. Uber A is a MAN. If it was CeCe, who claims she always wanted to be a girl, she would not have dressed as a man.

In chess, although the king is the most important piece, it is usually the weakest piece in the game until a later phase, the endgame. Players cannot make any move that places the king in check.

A is the most important, but because he needs to protect his identity at all costs, he is the weakest.

QUEEN:

The queen is the most powerful piece in the game of chess, able to move any number of squares vertically, horizontally or diagonally. Each player starts the game with one queen, placed next to the king. Because of the value of a queen, it is sometimes used as bait to lure an opponent into a trap by a queen sacrifice. Another tactic is to use the queen to threaten the opponent’s queen, to either retreat or to exchange the queen (losing both of them) to reduce the game to less powerful pieces. The queen is often used in conjunction with another piece, such as teamed with a bishop or rook, where the pieces could guard each other while threatening the opponent pieces.

So who is the Queen? = Red Coat

  • The Queen is the King’s right hand
  • The two people I believe could be represented as the Queen are:
    • Melissa Hastings (if the King is Wren)

She is Red Coat, Wren was coloring a picture of her. This is his dream of his future family.

I think she was the one in the Queen of Hearts costume

And she is most likely Black Veil/Widow ((Her husband Ian died, she is actually a widow))

    • But my #1 pick for the Queen is Aria Montgomery (if the King is Ezra)

We have seen Aria in a Red Coat:

The Queen is the most powerful piece because it can move anywhere on the board. Aria is fooling everyone by making herself look like a victim. But in fact she is the Queen. The analogy can be used that Aria can “move anywhere on the board” because she is best friends with the Liars and always knows what they are planning/thinking. She has infiltrated the ‘enemy.’ She can see everything first hand, go anywhere and it won’t look suspicious, because the Liars think she is on their side.

In chess, one team has White pieces, and the other has Black pieces. For this situation, Ezra and Aria are the evil black pieces (A), and Ali & the Liars are the good white pieces (B).

Ezra is using his Queen, Aria, to threaten the opponents Queen, Ali.

Aria is Queen A

Ali is Queen B

Look at this A message to Ali that was written in the newspaper:

Aria can be seen as the Black -evil- Queen (A), while Ali can be seen as the White -good- Queen, (B).

In the Christmas episode, when Mona is ‘murdered,’ Marlene tweeted:

In Chess, sometimes the Queen is sacrificed. Ezra wanted the White Queen Ali in the Dollhouse, but he decided to settle for Mona. He had Mona dress up as Ali and pretend to be her in the Dollhouse.

Mona is the newborn white PROM queen

Meanwhile, what is our Evil Queen Aria wearing?

BLACK!!!

ROOK/CASTLE:

Castling is an important goal in Chess, because it serves two valuable purposes: it moves the king into a safer position away from the center of the board, and it moves the rook to a more active position in the center of the board. There are 2 Rooks.

Who are the Rooks? = CeCe Drake & Mona Vanderwaal

As I explained earlier, they both took the fall to protect the King.

Mona pretended to be A to and was put into Radley and CeCe pretended to be Charles and was institutionalized into Welby for 5 years.

BISHOP:

Each player begins the game with two bishops. One starts between the king’s knight and the king, the other between the queen’s knight and the queen. The bishop has no restrictions in distance for each move, but is limited to diagonal movement. Bishops, like all other pieces except the knight, cannot jump over other pieces. A bishop captures by occupying the square on which an enemy piece sits. As a consequence of its diagonal movement, each bishop always remains on either the white or black squares, and so it is also common to refer to them as light-squared or dark-squared bishops.

Who are the Bishops? = Jenna Marshall & Noel Kahn

While they aren’t as powerful in the A Game as the others, they have significant roles.

Noel and Jenna are working together.

  • Him and Mona dated and worked together
  • It’s possible he murdered Sara Harvey
  • Maya was last seen at his Lake House
  • He has snooped on the Liars many times
  • Is possibly Varjack
  • Noel helped psychologically torture the girls in the Dollhouse
  • He had Mary’s Radley file in a lockbox in the hotel.

Jenna has plenty of reasons to hate the Liars and work against them

  • They blinded her by throwing the smoke bomb into her shed
  • Ali blackmailed her with her knowledge of Jenna and Toby’s weird relationship
  • Had something to do with the Cabin Fire
  • She was working with CeCe and Archer in Welby

KNIGHT:

A knight is resented by a horse’s head and neck. Each player starts with two knights. The knight move is unusual among chess pieces. When it moves, it can move to a square that is two squares horizontally and one square vertically, or two squares vertically and one square horizontally. The complete move therefore looks like the letter L. Unlike all other standard chess pieces, the knight can ‘jump over’ all other pieces (of either color) to its destination square. A knight should always be close to where the action is, meaning it is best used on areas of the board where the opponent’s pieces are clustered or close together.

It is interesting to note that the finale of Season 7 next week is titled “The Darkest Knight.”

Who are the Knights? = Lucas Gottesman and Darren Wilden

We know Lucas has been part of the game.

  • Ali bullied him constantly, calling him Hermie.
  • He was the one wearing the gloves who gave Emily the massage.
  • Emily and Hanna are conveniently living in his ‘smart’ apartment.

There was always something up with Darren Wilden

  • He was on the Halloween train dressed as the second Queen of Hearts
  • He was always hounding the girls for information on Ali. He really wanted to find her, and I think it is because he was working for A.
  • He had a connection with CeCe

PAWNS:

The pawn is the most numerous piece in the game of chess, and in most circumstances, also the weakest. Unlike the other pieces, pawns may not move backwards. Normally a pawn moves by advancing a single square, but the first time a pawn is moved, it has the option of advancing two squares. Pawns may not use the initial two-square advance to jump over an occupied square, or to capture. Any piece directly in front of a pawn, friend or foe, blocks its advance.

Who are the White (good) Pawns? Emily, Spencer, Hannah, Caleb, & Toby, with Ali as the White Queen B.

This next pic is hard to see. It says: “Once you know what someone cares about it’s easy to beat them, to separate them. Just like in chess. I lure each one and I isolate each of them, and knock them off the board. I’m almost grateful that Mona so unwittingly attempted to play me, because now all the pieces are mine. And when I crush them, and I will, that’s checkmate for all of them.”

CHECKMATE BITCHES <3

Absolute favorite theory I have written!!!  Thanks for reading! xox
